Humber, Coast and Vale Excellence Centre
Newsletter
Autumn Conference
Following the launch of our Excellence Centre in April 2018, we held an Autumn Conference on the 19 November at the Mercure Hotel in Willerby, Hull. Interest was great with more than 100
colleagues from across Humber, Coast and Vale wishing to register a place. The conference was attended by a mix of people from across Health, Social Care, Independent sector, Education and
Training provider organisations.
Feedback has on the whole been excellent. Whilst a brief update was given on progress made against the Delivery Plan over the last six months and a presentation from North Yorkshire Council
on workforce challenges, the focus of the event was on activities that reinforce the value of organisations connecting and strengthening partnerships to enable greater collaboration and outcomes through the Excellence Centre. It was a fun day but there were also some really strong
messages about choosing to be positive when things seem impossible, being open to new ideas that might just help us all get to where we need to be as communities of service providers, employers,
educators and individuals. After all teamwork in its broadest sense is what’s important to those accessing our services.
It would be useful to know what topics colleagues would like at future events, given the plan is to have events each year if they are of value. Please contact Carly McIntyre [email protected]
with your ideas / needs / wishes and we will prepare a wish list in readiness for 2019 onwards.

Care Certificate Project Update
A project has been established to look at developing a Care Certificate programme for the HCV area
that applies across both Health and Social Care and is recognised as a quality programme so that the
Care Certificate will be portable across roles and transferable between employers in HCV.
The project objectives are:
To improve standards and consistency of Care Certificate training across HCV
To support the integration agenda and joint working by increasing awareness of both Health and Social Care roles
To improve standards and consistency of Health and Social Care across HCV
To offer a transferable qualification to support the movement of care staff between organisations, while providing a foundation for further training and development of care workers
To reduce the time and cost spent on duplicating training
The first project group meeting will be held in January. If you would like to be part of the project group please contact [email protected]
Rotational Apprenticeships Project Update
Work is progressing on the two deliverables identified for this project:
Across HCV: Develop a set of principles which will underpin the development and delivery of rotational apprenticeships in Health and Social Care in localities, where and when ready
In Localities: A workgroup focussed on the development of Rotational Apprenticeships in Health and Social Care across organisations in both sectors with the development of joint, rotational roles across Health and Social Care in a variety of settings A HCV group has been established to begin work on the principles for the delivery of these
apprenticeships which will lead to the development of Best Practice Guidance. Further consultation with
Social Care providers will begin with the issue of an online survey in early 2019.
Locally, the Hull & East Riding Collaborative Group are considering a timeline for delivery of these
apprenticeships with other localities across Humber Coast and Vale considering options.
If you would like to be involved in this project or either of the two working groups, please contact

Step into Health and Social Care Careers Project Update
Across HCV Health and Social Care partners are working together to promote Health and Social Care as a career of choice. This Step into Health and Social Care Framework brings together the work that is happening across the region sharing examples of local initiatives as well as sharing links to national resources that can be used to support people into Health and Social Care careers. The model is based on four initial principles: Awareness; Information; Engagement and Mentorship. The work that is happening across HCV is presented against these principles and will be available on our website in the New Year. The framework has been developed to work on a number of levels:
To support Health and Social Care partners in the region to share initiatives and learn from each other in order that good practice can be scaled up
To support career advisers, coordinators and those that are giving advice to people looking for a career in Health and Social Care so they have relevant and up to date information
To direct those actively looking for opportunities in Health and Social Care to information on the wide range of careers available
To support hose already in the sector who are looking for a change of career within Health and Social Care.

North Yorkshire Care Academy
Scarborough TEC and Scarborough Sixth Form College have launched the North Yorkshire Care Academy with the first cohort of young people joining the academy in September 2018. The Academy aims to
inspire and raise aspirations of young people and to develop and ensure a stable well qualified workforce for the future. The Academy provides an enrichment program which runs alongside and enhances
student study programs and provides an insight into the Health, Allied Professionals, Social Care and Early Years sectors. Students will have the chance to explore career opportunities, engage with professionals working within the sector, access specialist workshop activities and develop and enhance work-related
knowledge and skills to enable them to make an informed career choice.
This grow your own workforce approach will encourage young people to consider a career in health, social care or early years, invest in their education locally, progress to exciting and enriching careers
based within the region and work towards addressing the forecasted skills shortages within the sector. By 2022 required staffing levels for the region of predicted to rise by an average of 7.5% for Health Related Professions, 10.5% for Social Care and 5.3% for Allied Professionals and early years. This opportunity will initially be available for young people to access alongside their studies from 14 to 18 years of age and as
the Academy develops there are plans to open up the access to adults wishing to explore career opportunities.

A Day in the life
A Day in the Life of the NHS is an annual event initiated and led by NHS East Riding of Yorkshire CCG,
organised alongside local health and education partners. The event first took place in 2015 and aims
to inspire the next generation of NHS staff by showcasing some of the roles available.
Taking place at the Clinical Skill Facility at Hull Royal Infirmary, A Day in the Life of the NHS is targeted
at 12 to 14 year old students from schools in East Yorkshire and Hull. Students experience a number
of interactive scenarios, giving them a flavour of the roles within a range of clinics and services, which
have included maternity wards, emergency departments, mental health services, paediatric nursing
clinics, end of life services, prison health services, and an operating theatre.
Feedback received from students in 2017 showed that 83.7% of those attending would be more likely
to consider a career in the NHS following A Day in the Life of the NHS.
This year pupils from Withernsea High School and Goole Academy attended the event and were
active participants in the Giant Operation game; there were several energetic riders on the smoothie
bike and many budding surgeons emerged from the theatre scenario delivered by Hull University.
Pupils were taught restart a heart and how to communicate with Makaton for people with a Learning
Disability.
Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Trust (NLAG) Congratulated by Minister
Rachel Maguire, Head of People Development and Harriet Stephens, Head of Education, Training and
Development have been congratulated by the Right Honourable Anne Milton MP, Minister of State for
Apprenticeships and Skills, thanking them for their commitment to and enthusiasm for apprenticeships
The Education Skills Funding Agency’s data shows that the Public Sector target for apprenticeships is 2.3%
and the Public Sector average is 1.4%. The overall NHS average is 1.2% and NLAG achieved 2.8%
Congratulations to NLAG on their continued success.
