Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, Welcome back to Term 3 and I trust that the holidays were a time for all to regroup and recharge for what will be another busy term. Over the holidays a number of staff, students and parents participated in various tours. Congratulations and thank you to all involved in the Malaysian tour, the New Zealand Rugby and Soccer tour and the Confraternity Rugby League tour. From all reports each tour was very successful and the students represented their College with distinction. Also congratulations to Giles Beveridge, Terrin Walls and Jarrod Watson for their selection in the Queensland schoolboys rugby team which competed in the Australian Championships at Ballymore last week. A special congratulation to Terrin Walls who was subsequently selected in the Australian A schoolboy team. This is an outstanding achievement. Well done Terrin. This term a number of staff are on leave for various reasons, and as a result a number of new staff join St Patrick’s College to replace these staff. They include: Julie Catalan (replacing Katie Spencer), Paul Schaumberg (replacing Justin Moro), Philip de Villiers (replacing Rob Morris/Geoff Samuels), Michael Bramwell (replacing Craig McDonald), Doug Locke (replacing Dionne Tually), Mr Ric Porter is undertaking a special numeracy project working with small groups of students at the College this semester. His classes will be taken by Blair Drabble. Also, Mr Pat Bourke is still unwell and will not return to the College this term. Finally, Mr Chris Carlill is on paternity leave for weeks 1 and 2 of the term and his place will be taken by Natalie McDonald. I take this opportunity to welcome all these staff to St Patrick’s College. Over the next couple of weeks there are a number of important events happening at the College including: YEARS 8, 9, 10 SOCIAL - SATURDAY 16 JULY PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS - MONDAY 18 JULY TRIMESTER 2 CO CURRICULAR ASSEMBLY - TUESDAY 19 JULY WATERFORD BUILDING OPENING - THURSDAY 21 JULY TUTOR GROUP PHOTOS - FRIDAY 22 JULY I encourage families to use the College calendar and website to monitor what events are happening during Term 3. I wish to especially mention the Waterford Building opening which is on Thursday 21 July beginning at 9am in the courtyard area. All families are welcome to attend this special event. It has been brought to my attention that the Brisbane City Council staff have been taking photos of cars that are parking illegally in front of the College. Subsequently, infringement notices and fines have been issued. Please be aware of this and follow the correct procedures for parking around the College. Term 3 is traditionally a full and busy term. It is also a very important term from an academic perspective. It is important that all students switch out of ‘holiday mode’ and into ‘school mode’ from the start of the term. Issues such as homework, assignments and study must begin from the start of the term. Good luck to all families during Term 3. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL CURRICULUM— CHRIS CAMPBELL

Term 3 is a particularly busy academic period for the students. Boys in Year 12 will complete final preparation for the Queens-land Core Skills Test which will be held on August 30 and 31. As part of the preparation for this program two practice days have been set aside for all students completing QCS. These days will take place on Monday and Tuesday 8 and 9 August and will be full day practices. Please note, unlike previous years, Tuesday 9 August is not the day of the Year 12 formal. For Year 12 students who are not completing the QCS Test, arrangements are being made for students who are part of the Work Education course, to complete extra days of work placement with their employer. A letter has been prepared for all Work Education students to give to their employer at work placement next week. This letter asks the employer if they would be pre-pared to have the student work with them on Monday and Tuesday the 8th and 9th of August as well as Tuesday August 30 and Wednesday August 31. This should not be an issue as it is a scheduled work placement day for most Year 12’s. Whilst this is at the discretion of the employer, those we have contacted to date have indicated their willingness to allow students to partake in the extra days. Throughout August, Year 10 students will undertake their subject selection process for Years 11 and 12. This process will involve a number of important steps. On Friday 5 August, Heads of Curriculum will meet with all Year 10’s during period one and two. Dur-ing this time they will speak about what is involved in subject areas offered in the Senior School at St Patrick’s. Students will re-ceive QTAC information as well as direction regarding online subject selection. This session will be followed by a parent infor-mation evening on Monday 15 August. More information about this evening as well as further initiatives for Year 10 will be released in the coming weeks. Students in Years 7-9 will continue to utilise the netbooks as a big component of their classwork. Units across a range of subjects are being released through the OneNote function, which is becoming the preferred way to interact with students at a curriculum level. A note to students, especially Year 12, who may be interested in pursuing apprenticeships after their formal school. Quuensland Rail, Energex and the Housing Industry of Australia (HIA) are currently calling for applications for apprenticeships and train-eeships. These applications close at the end of next week, so students need to move quickly to access, log on to the homepage of each of the three areas. This coming Monday sees the second of the College’s Parent-Teacher Interview evenings. I often speak of the importance of the three way partnership between teachers boys and parents, Evenings such as these are an important part of this concept. I encour-age all parents to take advantage of this evening. Welcome back to all in what is always a very important term.

WELCOME TO SEMESTER 2 I hope everyone had a relaxing break and used the time to spend with family and friends. SEMESTER 1 REPORTS Please discuss your son’s Semester 1 report with him and help him set clear goals for the second semester. It is im-portant to acknowledge the good work your son is doing but also take note of the teacher’s comments about areas to work on. Overall the results across the College were quite good but each individual student must take steps to contin-ue to improve. Students who are performing well in their classes generally are also showing positive behaviour. Please also maintain strong communication with the staff, either by writing notes in the Student Diary, email or via the phone. UNIFORM AND GROOMING The appearance of many students was excellent to start the term. I was disappointed that some students however re-turned to school obviously not adhering to the College’s Hair and Grooming Policy. Being a part of St Patrick’s is linked to the expectation that every student adheres to the set guidelines. This requires discipline and cooperation. Could all families please ensure that their son attends school with the full uniform – including tie, blazer (Yrs 10-12) and correct shoes - and appropriate hair. These matters must be dealt with this week. SENIOR FORMAL There are a number of Year 12 students who have not paid for the Senior Formal. If these boys are able to finalise payment and see Mrs Fowlie in the Student Office to organise their tables. YEAR 8-9-10 SOCIAL Will held this Saturday 16 July. Normal school rules and expectations apply. We need parents to assist with the run-ning of the Social – on the front door, in the cloakroom, selling drinks, general supervision. We cannot run the social without parental support. If you can help please contact Mrs Fowlie in the Student Office (36319070) Venue – Sandgate PCYC Dempster Street, Deagon Time- 7.00 to 10.00 pm Clothing – closed footwear is essential, no offensive T-Shirts etc Cost - $10 Attendance – only St Patrick’s Year 8-9-10 boys plus female students from invited Colleges – St Rita’s, St John Fisher, Mt Alvernia, All Hallows, Mt Maria –Petrie, Clayfield College, St Margaret’s and Mary Mackillop

Five Cent Coins Needed Please For the past three years we have had over 100 students taking part in the 40 Hour Famine. The focus country of this year’s 40 Hour Famine is East Timor—Australia’s nearest neighbour, and one which St Patrick’s has formed a number of relationships with in recent years, and also one of the poorest countries on earth. As part of this year’s famine we would like to gather 50 000 five cent coins. This will help us to raise $2,500 to help the people of East Timor — enough to feed a family of five for five years. As well as raising funds, the 50, 000 coins will also serve an awareness function. It is estimated that 50, 000 people die of hunger or other poverty related causes every day. This number is very hard to imagine, but it is hoped that these coins will provide a great visual representation of the extent and impact of extreme poverty in our world, and motivate us all to do more about it. We are asking every student to bring 50 five cent coins each (more if desired) to help this great cause. Please get behind us.

A s I wrote in my last Calling article of Term 2, I was fortunate enough to spend ten days of my holidays in the Philippines, as a guest of the Christian Brothers in

the diocese of Kabankalan on the island of Negros. I had been invited to participate in a Ministry Planning Workshop and had been asked to bring the perspective of Edmund Rice Education Australia schools with experience in immersions and partnerships. I have a strong belief, built through immersion experiences in South Africa, the Philippines and India, that the more authenti-cally we can move from a position of charity (ie the notion of the rich white people coming with money and answers to help “the poor people”) to a position of solidarity (ie a mutual relationship based on respect where all parties contribute and benefit to the partnership), the sooner real justice can be achieved. This is all about perspective, and one’s perspective can change if one’s eyes, mind and heart are opened to the other. Not only has my perspective been challenged and transformed on every global immersion experience I have had, including this past fortnight in the Philippines, but I have seen many students and staff have similarly profound responses. However, it is worth noting that one does need to enter these experiences with an openness to what lies ahead. Some may have heard the story of a visitor to one of Mother Teresa’s hospices for the dying in Calcutta, who when watching Mother Teresa clean a particularly repulsive ulcer on a patient, blurted out, “I would not do that for a million dollars!” To which Mother Teresa replied, “Neither would I.” She was doing it for the love of Christ, giving witness to her faith in a way which boggles the minds of most of us today.

It is of course reminiscent of Matthew’s gospel where we are told that the times when we fed the hungry, clothed the naked, welcomed the stranger and visited the sick, we did it for Christ. This kind of commitment, if it is to be completely authentic, also needs to be based in humility. It cannot be about the rewards we may receive or the recognition we may obtain. Also in Matthew’s gospel, the Lord warns against a form of “charity” which proceeds from a desire for recognition rather than from a true love of neighbour in: “Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets …But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” We hope that at St Patrick’s, we are providing not only oppor-tunities for our students to be of service to others, but also the wisdom to do so humbly, and in genuine relationship with peo-ple. This will be at the forefront of our minds this term, as we send four Year 11 students to East Timor on August 1, and begin our formation program for the boys travelling to India in November and December. And of course, for our students and staff who give of themselves every week on the Paddies Van or in other numerous ways, you may not be doing it for the appreciation, but I guarantee we appreciate you anyway! Have a great term.

We have two fantastic teams playing AFL this year, an under 14 and under 16 team. Last year, our

under 16 team won the premiership, whilst our under 14 team finished second. We usually play on

Monday afternoons, however because of parent-teacher interviews our first game of the season will

probably be on Tuesday afternoon 19 July. Training is Thursday mornings from 6.30 – 8am at

Curlew Park. We play three games in the preliminary draw before the top two teams from each draw move into the

semi-finals competition.

The under 14 coach is Mr Aaron Kerr, the under 16 coach is Mr Dom Crowley. Any old boys or parents who are keen AFL sup-

porters are encouraged to come along and assist with training and games.

Boys are expected to be in full AFL uniform which consists of SPC sport shorts, rugby or football socks and boots. The school will

be providing the jerseys – that must be returned to coaches every week.

Please contact Mr Dom Crowley ([email protected]) for further information about AFL at St Patrick’s.

For anyone interested within the St Patrick’s College Community, there is a Bayside to Bald Hills event supporting Camp Quality which supports

beneficial to our students preparing for athletics, tennis or basketball.
