I welcome the Archeus Newsletter. This issue is brought to you as the second one of the Department of Architecture and Planning. It contains various activities of the Department which have taken place between April to June 2019. During this period department has organized the two five-day workshops under TEQIP III namely, “Bamboo – 2019 and Best Practices in Brick Masonry & Timber Joinery”, and a one day Consultation Workshop on

Urban-Rural partnership sponsored by IR a part from the workshops, the department has established the DRIGBC Student Chapter in the month of May 2019. Other activities like farewell function, special lectures, software training session etc were also organized. Department also invited in-house guest – Shri. Vishram Jamdar, Chairman BoG; Dr. P. M. Padole, Director, VNIT Nagpur; Dr. D. R. Peshwe, Dean (FW); Dr. V. B. Borghate, Dean (R&D); Dr. M. V. Aware, Coordinator, TEQIP III, and Outside Guest - Mrs. Nanda Jichkar, Mayor, NMC, Nagpur. Director; Prof. Ar. Vijay Garg, President of CoA, New Delhi; Ar. P. S. Ahuja, Chairman, IIA Nagpur, Ar. Ashok Mokha, Practicing Architect, Nagpur, Ar. Virendra Khare, BoS member & Practicing Architect, Nagpur and Prof. Abhay Purohit, Council Member of CoA for various functions like inauguration, installation and valedictory etc. This issue also contains the visit of Director to department, publication of research & technical papers written by faculty and scholars, participation in International & National conference/workshops, achievements of faculty and students etc. I hope you will enjoy reading this issue. IGBC Students' Chapter Installation Ceremony

1. IGBC Students' Chapter Installation Ceremony at Department of Architecture & Planning, Visvesvaraya st

National Institute of Technology VNIT, Nagpur was organized on 1 May 2019. The event was graced by Honorable Shri. Vishram Jamdar, Dr. Pramod Padole, Prof. Ar. Vijay Garg and Ar. Ashok Mokha, Chairman, IGBC – Vidarbha Chapter. The guests were welcomed with saplings as an indicator life supporter. The event started with the welcome address by Dr. V. S. Kapse. He welcomed the guests and elaborated the developmental activities of the department. Honorable Director, VNIT, Nagpur, Dr. Pramod Padole, a multifaceted personality addressed the event and enlightened the gathering with his thoughts and ideas. He mentioned the initiatives taken by the institute for societal development and multiple green initiatives like extracting solar energy for generating electricity. A newsletter was prepared by the Department of Architecture & Planning to display the activities (short term training programs, workshops, lectures, and other events) of the department and achievements of students and faculty members which was released by the honorable guests. Ar. Ashok Mokha, addressed the event and furnished the goals and functioning of IGBC. He also provided the benefits of associating with IGBC. IGBC team and dignitaries handed over the IGBC certificate and coffee table book to the Department of Architecture and Planning, VNIT, Nagpur. Ar. Vijay Garg addressed the gathering.

He said he had a great opportunity to be associated with Late Dr. Prem C Jain, prior Chairman IGBC who was a 'green visionary'. He further mentioned his association in expanding the green movement in practice and academics. Honarable Shri.Vishramji Jamdar, a renowned industrialist, educationist, spiritual thinker and a writer is associated with VNIT as Chairman, Board of Governors. In his address he acknowledged the research activities of the department urged the development of a model from indigenous knowledge system. He stressed on the traditional architecture which had less energy input but high sustenance. The program was anchored by Dr. Sarika Bahadure, Coordinator Architectural Society and formal vote of thanks was presented by Miss Shelvin John, the ladies representative, Architecture Society.The event was attended by Deans, VNIT, special invitees, faculty members, research scholars and students of B. Arch. & M. Tech Urban Planning.

st th1. A 5-day Bamboo Workshop was held from 1 to 5 April 2019 in the department. The inaugural function was

stheld on 1 April. The Director, Dr. P. M. Padole was the Chief Guest and Dr. Aware was the guest in the capacity of TEQIP co-ordinator. Dr. V. S. Kapse welcomed the guests and gathering with a welcome speech.

thThe valedictory function was held on 5 April 2019. Dr. Peshwe of Metallurgy and Material Science Department and Dean (FW) was the Chairman of the function. Dr. Chandra Sabnani and Dr. Smita Khan were the co-ordinators of the workshop.

The workshop was aimed at training young building professionals to be on the forefront during such calamities, and construct bamboo structures effectively and efficiently, as it is a cheap material which is easily available.

Dr. Sudhakar Puttagunta from Haritha Ecological Institute, Hyderabad, Telangana and Ms Puspanjali Das st

from IIT Delhi, were the facilitators of the workshop.More than 30 Students from 1 year B. Arch to Final year B. Arch participated in it. Students got hands-on experience in constructing a 12 ft. x 9 ft. temporary foldable structure. This structure model could be used during a crisis or a natural calamity as a temporary rehabilitation for the affected people. It can be erected on site within a short period of time and can easily be dismantled as well.

rd th2. A five day workshop on “Best Practices in Brick Masonry and Timber Joinery” was held from 3 to 7

April 2019, co-ordinated by Dr. Vijay S. Kapse and Dr. Pankaj N. Bahadure. The workshop was sponsored by TEQIP-III and the twinning institute for the workshop was Samrat Ashok Technological Institute (SATI), Vidisha. The workshop was skill upgradation program for students of Architecture and Civil Engineering programs, wherein overall 40 students participated (30 from VNIT, Nagpur and 10 from SATI, Vidisha).

The workshop was conducted in two phases for which two resource persons were invited. The inauguration was held on the first day of the workshop in the presence of TEQIP coordinator Dr. M. V. Aware and guest of honour Ar. Paramjeet Singh Ahuja. The first resource person was Mr. Vikas Shimpi from Nashik who has expertise in various brick masonry types and structures. During the rest of the first day, students got theoretical inputs and basics of creating scaled models from the resource person. In the following two days, the expert gave hands-on experience to students about making various brick masonry structures using different brick bonds. Students prepared scaled models of various brick masonry structures like arches, domes, brick-bonds, curved walls, openings in walls, etc. A full size brick structure too was erected in the department for demonstration.

The other resource person, Mr. Manuj Mundhada has expertise in timber technology using latest machines

and equipment. During the last two days of the workshop, he helped students to design furnitures using the

latest 'System 32' method. Later he guided students to make full size usable furniture and a timber sculpture

using various types of timber joints, conventional as well as contemporary ones. Students learned to use high

end latest technology for marking, cutting and joining timber components.

On the last day, valedictory function was held, in the presence of Dean (R&C), Dr. V. B. Borghate and special

guest Prof. Abhay Purohit, Principal, IDEAS, Nagpur. The students were awarded certificates for their

participation in the workshop.

Overall, the feedback from students was positive and they learnt a lot from it.

3. Dr. Sameer Deshkar conducted Stackholder's consultation workshop on “Building Urban Rural

Partnership for Resilient Future: Nagpur City & Metropolitan Region” at the department between rd th3 to 7 April 2019. The message that emanated from the daylong deliberations during the workshop was

“For creating resilient cities & regions under climate change scenarios, a holistic perspective beyond the

administrative boundaries is essential and there is a need to consider urban and rural (U-R) areas

collectively for sustainable natural resource management.” The workshop was part of the multilateral

collaborative project coordinated by the IRDR International Centre of Excellence in Resilient

Communities & Settlements (ICoE-RCS) together with Institute for Global Environmental Strategies,

Yokohama, Japan, Keio University, Fujisawa, Japan, Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) and

Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi. The workshop that was presided over

by Shri Vishram Jamdar witnessed the gracious presence of Smt. Nanda Jichkar, Hon' Mayor of Nagpur

city as Chief Guest; Dr. Ramnath Sonawane, CEO, NSSCDCL as Guest of Honour, special invitees Dr.

Prof. Rajib Shaw, Professor Keio University, Japan, Chairman, Science and Technology Advisory

Group, UNISDR; Dr. Bijon Kumer Mitra, Senior Water Resource Specialist, Natural resource and

Ecosystem Service Group, IGES Japan, Dr. Vijay Borghate, In-charge Director & Dr. Vijay Kapse

addressing the gathering of stakeholders such as NGOs, Civil Society Organizations, private sector

companies, invited village Sarpanch from surrounding rural areas of Nagpur Metropolitan Region,

academicians & scholars. Welcome speech was given by Dr. Vijay Kapse, HoD, Architecture & Planning.

Dr. Rajib Shaw, during inauguration highlighted the increasing significance of managing natural

resources in the face of climate change and the need for bringing a paradigm shift in development policies

by considering cities and their hinterlands collectively, particularly water and agriculture. In his

introductory remarks, Dr. Sameer Deshkar pointed out the complementary nature of rural and urban

areas. He stated that a partnership approach could be pivotal in reducing natural disaster risks. He further

informed that the project envisages an innovative partnership between various stakeholders for natural

resource management & resilient development.

Dr. Ramnath Sonawane, in his address suggested to look at the interdependencies between U-R areas

and strengthen complementarily for sustainable resource management in development planning. He also

suggested that newer technologies & design solutions must be explored and brought in practice for

effective water conservation at various levels.

The lecture series was followed by the group discussion involving all the stakeholders with the central theme being convergence among various types of stakeholders for improving the U-R Partnership. The discussion was successful by providing certain suggestion on what measures to be taken in bridging the link between U-R areas, identifying key stakeholders at various levels of resource management and implementation of such measures.

The invited stakeholders were oriented about various aspects of U-R linkages and appraised of the opportunities for partnerships in resource conservation through lectures. Dr. Shalini Dhyani, Scientist, CSIR-NEERI spoke about 'Endorsing Nature Based Solutions for improving Water Resilience and Urban Rural Partnership'.

Dr. Sameer Deshkar coordinated the workshop proceedings and Dr. Vijay Borghate, In-charge Director, VNIT, offered valedictory remarks while vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Sameer Deshkar.

Dr. Sameer Deshkar, while deliberating on the topic 'Urban- Rural Partnership in Nagpur city and Metropolitan Region: Opportunities and Ways ahead' shared the observations from the field studies and brought out the important avenues where U-R Partnership can be mooted for natural resource conservation. Shri Madhao Kotasthane of Purti Sinchan Samuddhi Sanstha, elaborated on 'Avenues for Urban- Rural Partnership in Water Conservation' and illustrated some works carried out through their NGO. Dr. Bijon Kumer Mitra shared the best practices from around the world through his lecture on 'Building Urban-Rural Partnership: Experiences from Japan and Bangladesh' and deliberated on various mechanisms adopted by the urban local bodies for their implementation and effective governance.

Shri Vishram Jamdar, highlighted the timeless endeavour of the Institute to leverage a holistic development of our Nation by addressing relevant social concerns, engage in a dialogue with society and propagate innovative approaches & technologies through its academic and research engagements and congratulated Dr. Sameer Deshkar for successful organization of the workshop.

The Chief Guest, Hon' Mayor of Nagpur city, Smt. Nanda Jichkar stated that, “there has to be a better coordination between NMC and the rural local bodies in managing the basic infrastructure in Nagpur city and Metropolitan Region”. She acknowledged the significance of collective resilience perspective for cities and their hinterlands and appreciated the unique U-R partnership initiative by VNIT, for water security in Nagpur Metropolitan Region.

1. Dr. Sameer Deshkar and Dr. Pankaj Bahadure were nominated by VNIT Nagpur to represent the institute

at a 'Thematic Workshop on Vulnerability Atlas of India and Disaster Resistant Design & Construction

Practices'. It was organized by Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC) under

Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, Govt. of India; at Silver Oak Hall, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi rd

Road, New Delhi, on 3 May 2019.The workshop was attended by representative faculty members of

various IITs, NITs and other institute of national importance from all over India.

2. Dr. Akshay Patil participated in TEQIP – III sponsored two day training workshop on 'Web-Based PMS th th Software' organized at BVB's Sardar Patel College of Engineering, Andheri (W), Mumbai on 16 & 17

May, 2019.

nd rd1. Students from 2 year and 3 year B. Arch programme participated in ANDC 2019. The trophy focused

on getting the students aware about the “Social Production Process “ in rural / village habitat. To carry on

the research students made a visit to a village called 'Lawadha' in Amravati district. To attain the data from

the survey students were guided by Dr. Sameer Deshkar.

th1. Dr. Sarika Bahadure visited as external examiner for architectural design 4 semester B. Arch conducted at Gaikwad Patil College of Architecture, Nagpur. She was also called upon to be an external examiner for thesis design Pre-final review 10th semester B. Arch at SMMCA,Nagpur.

1. The department organized live session of "PARIKSHA PE CHARCHA" by Hon. Prime Minister Shri thNarendra Modi on 29 Jan 2019.

2. The department gave formal farewell to the final year students of B. Arch. and M.Tech. Urban planning th

on 20 April 2019 at 5.00 pm.The event was graced by Dr. Peshwe and Ar. Virendra Khare. Dr. Kapse, HOD welcomed the guests with saplings. He gave the welcome address and mentioned the batch to be a silent and sincere batch who were not involved in any issues. He encouraged students and blessed students for a better future. Dr. Rajashree Kotharkar and Dr. V. S. Bakde recalled the memories attached with the students and wished them for their bright future. Dr. Peshwe in his address mentioned about how the department and students bring life to the institute by their activities. He motivated students to remove fear within to explore new things. Ar. Virendra Khare graced the occasion and interacted with the students. He shared his journey from student of architecture from this department as alumnus to the current day practice. The goal to the success lies in time management, discipline and hard work. Students were presented with mementoes prepared by the first year students in the modelling workshop. The program was attended by faculty members, final year students of B. Arch and M. Tech Urban planning and organizing team from third years, Ms. Deepti Daniel (third year student) and Ms. Aparna Rajeev (second year student). Dr. Sarika Bahadure addressed the students and mentioned that every student have spark in them, they should not lose this spark. Also the importance of inculcating value is the key to success. She presented the formal vote of thanks.

4. On the observance of Anti-Tobacco day, Architecture and Planning Department organized Anti- tobacco st pledge on 31 May 2019. Faculties, non-teaching staff, PhD. Scholars & M. Tech students participated in

the pledge.

1. The Laurie Baker Center (LBC) NASA Exposure Programme was attended by students of 1st, 2nd, 3rd year students in December 2018. The programme was held at Laurie Baker Center at trivandrum, Kerala from 3rd to 6th December 2018. The four day workshop was combination of lectures, hands-on experience, field visits and audio-visual sessions. The key speakers were Ar. P. B. Sajan, Prof. Shailaja Nair.
