Harvest Festival Time at Coopersale Hall On Wednesday 8 October we held our Harvest Festival. When we went into the hall there was a massive Harvest collection. I said, “There is so much food here”. My friend Matthew agreed with me. When the assembly started the director of the Manna Centre came up and gave a speech about their work. When he had finished, Year 1 and 2 performed the first song. At the end of the assembly Year 5 read the Harvest prayer. I read a solo of part of the prayer and I was very proud of myself after that.

Year 5 Visit Pelly Court On Thursday 9 October in the afternoon Year 5 went to Pelly Court, it is a local club for the elderly. When we arrived we gave out some of the harvest gifts to the old people. They were very grateful for the food that we had brought them. I talked to a man who was an author of a book called Jet. I spoke to another man who used to be a football player and scored a goal from taking a corner. It was lunch time whilst we were there and we all helped serve the meal by acting as waiters and waitresses. I had a great day at Pelly Court. By Jack Wilson

Scientists of the Week

Swimming Gala at St. Nicholas On Monday 29 September, Coopersale Hall swam against St Nicholas School in a local gala. It was the first time some of our younger swimmers have swum in the swimming squad and they were amazing. Well done to Grace, Ava, Sam, Lilly and David. It was quite a small pool so we all had to swim two lengths although this did not stop us from doing our best. The girls won their events and scored 51 points to St. Nick’s 39 points. They boys also won their events and scored 52 points to St. Nick’s 38. Overall, Coopersale won by 103 points to 77. Well done to the team and thank you to Mr Robinson and Mrs Lane for cheering us on.

We Love the Outdoor Classroom!

Upper Kindergarten Baker have been using the Outdoor Classroom for some of their work on the topic ‘Transport’.

In class they made their own ‘transporter’ car. They painted a big box, then added wheels and a string to pull it along.

They used the ‘transporter’ car to take their equipment down to the Outdoor Classroom, where they decorated it and made paper aeroplanes, using rectangle paper then folding rectangles and triangles.

They then took them onto the astro-turf to fly them. Everyone’s planes flew and Rosie made the plane that flew the furthest. Well done everyone.

Apologies to Isabelle Lavery who won the Scientist of the week award w/c 1.9.14 not Isabella Roase.

Autumn Days in Year 1 Daly Year 1 Daly made the most of a beautiful sunny day to learn more about autumn. After a lovely walk searching the glorious grounds of Coopersale Hall, a collection of sycamore, oak, copper beech, willow and maple leaves had been made. The children tore off a tiny piece of each leaf and stuck it on to a sticky label. They were so excited about the different colours they had found. They returned to the classroom to do rubbings of sycamore leaves for our wall display. Everyone had a lovely time.

Transition Make Their Own Music Children in Transition have been learning about different percussion instruments. There has been a lot of tapping, shaking and scraping going on in the studio! The children were set the challenge to make their own instruments at home after experimenting with sound in their music lessons. Mrs Baxter was thoroughly impressed with the results! Thank you to all those grown ups at home who may have helped make these magnificent instruments. They look and sound fantastic and they are on display on the Transition sound wall in the studio. Feel free to pop in to admire them all!

Letter Writing in Year 1 The children in year 1 have been learning how to write a letter and how to address an envelope. They have learnt all about the format of letter writing and finding out about different streets, towns, and postcodes. They have searched addresses on Google Earth. This is cross curricular, in connection with our topic homes and maths, learning how the post office sort mail with odds and evens. They have sent a letter home to their parents, this was sure to have been a lovely surprise to have received.

Year 4 Trip to Copped Hall Year 4 visited this historic house on Wednesday 1 October. Mrs Chapman, a grandmother of a past pupil, told the pupils about the inhabitants of the house during Georgian Times. The children wrote about their day using a variety of genres: stories, poems, descriptive passages and reports. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the home baked biscuits provided for the pupils by the volunteers of the Copped Hall Trust.

‘A’ Team Netball Match - by Aimee Regan - Netball Captain On the 6 October Coopersale Hall netball team played a fantastic match against Theydon Bois School. This was a home game and all of the girls in my team were enthusiastic and confident. I was quite nervous when I met the other team as some of them were double the size of me. Nevertheless, I was determined to play my best. The game commenced with dull grey cloud waiting above us. In the first ten minutes we scored some goals from our amazing shooter. Our team was feeling extremely excited and eager to play the next third. In the last third, there was an unfortunate change in the weather the dull grey clouds opened and the rain poured down heavily, all the players got really wet. The last few minutes passed extremely quickly, and the other team managed to score and win. I would like to thank Mrs Lane, Tracy, parents and the children from netball club for all your support.

‘B’ Team Netball Match - by Grace Clare On the 7 October Coopersale Hall played a netball match against Theydon Bois. The children who had never played in a match before did amazingly well and so did everybody else. Brooke, Imogen and I played some really good shots and Millie was really good at being centre for the first time. But unfortunately the final score was 4—3 to them, so better luck next time Coopersale. Thank you to Mrs Lane and all the parents for watching.

Science Day at Felsted School - by Elana Aseerwatham On Saturday 11 October Millie, Matthew, Rowan and I went to Felsted School for a science work shop event. It was very interesting because it was themed Harry Potter lessons. The morning was divided into four parts, namely Herbology, Potions, Charms and Care of Magical Creatures. Each lesson took place in a different room. Our teachers were called professors and demonstrated the experiments to us before we got stuck in ourselves. This was the most fun part. We were working on challenging tasks. Out of four experiments I enjoyed the Magic Metal Magnesium experiment in the Potions lesson most of all. We used tweezers, a bunsen burner and the chemical magnesium. We wore goggles to protect our eyes and looked like real scientists!! Using the tweezers we held the magnesium in the bunsen burner and watched the reaction. Magnesium is a highly flammable metal. When we held it in the bunsen burner it produced a brilliant white light. Professor Bonnet taught us about the Care of Magical Creatures. We got to hold a lot of snakes of all different sizes. There was a huge tarantula, bigger than the size of the Professor’s hand, which we were not allowed to hold. The biggest creature was a komodo dragon. Even the professor himself wore special protection to handle the creature. When Millie and I saw the creature, we were so frightened, that we hugged each other. It was really exciting!

FOCHS Update

We were delighted to see so many new faces at the FOCHS AGM on 25 September, and to have such an enthusiastic committee as well as plenty of volunteers! It should certainly make for a great year of activities and events for the children as well as some new and different fundraising ideas. We hope that at the Harvest Festival assembly some of you will have seen the new staging in the hall, including stage curtaining, a new sound and lighting system complete with drop-down microphones, and blackout curtains, which was commissioned by FOCHS. This is a great example of the way that the funds raised by FOCHS can enhance not only the children’s experience of school, but also the parents’! Coming up this term are the Disco for Years 1 – 6 on Friday 7 November – there has been a terrific amount of interest already so don’t forget to get your tickets before half term so as not to miss the fun. Following this will be the Fireworks Display at Oaklands School on Sunday 9 November (if any parents can volunteer any time to help out with this to help make sure the event is a great success, even if it’s just for half an hour, please don’t hesitate to get lelt us know), the commencement of a Friday afternoon Tuck Shop in the Studio on 14 November, the Junior School trip to the West End to see Roald Dahl’s Matilda and productions at school for the Infants (Jack and the Beanstalk) and Early Years (Elliott’s Christmas Adventure) performed by the theatre group Bangers and Mash. We will be holding our traditional Christmas Fayre, as well as the Mummy and Daddy shop, and we hear a rumour from the North Pole that Santa Claus and his reindeer are planning to pay us a visit...watch this space.. We can be contacted via the post box in Reception or via email to [email protected] and would love to hear from you!

My Magic Box by Tom Sharp

I will put into the box The greedy growl of a dinosaur on a dark night,

from a slimy snort of a hippopotamus, To the top of a tower that is terribly tall.

I will put in the box A powerful parrot with a loud hoot,

Also a drop of healing water from the biblical Nile, Together with an amazing crocodile with a jaw as strong as a boxer

I will put in the box A tasty tea which tastes treat,

To a lingering aroma of a wet dog, Also a boisterous bounce on a trampoline

I will put in the box A tantalising tickle of an inky insect, A stubborn stamp of an elephant,

And a sensuous smell of my Caribbean cooking I will put in the box

A simmering spaghetti bolognese with a hint of garlic With a sizzle of sausages and a stormy storm

I will put in the box My box is decorated with glittery diamonds with a

hint of gold and hinges made from pasta, and a pocket full of secrets.
