A Magical Force

Love is the most powerful motivation. It’s magical force in the universe, and there is nowhere it displays its beauty and wonder more than in the intimate relationship between two people.

Some loves between two people endure a lifetime. Others are destined to only last for a while; then, the two lovers are separated either by choice or by fate. But one thing is true: No matter what the outcome of a relationship, when love enters our lives, it never leaves without transforming us at the very depth of our being.

Sometimes love reveals itself in the unmatched level of understanding and friendship we share with our mate and no one else. Sometimes it is what is said, and sometimes, what is not said but deeply felt. Sometimes it is in the obstacles we must face together. Sometimes it is in how the joy we feel with our partner spills over to our children and family members. And sometimes it is in where the relationship takes us inside ourselves places we will never go willingly; but for love, we will do anything.”

IMAGINE!A world with no limits

As a person imagines the world around him he/she instantly creates

a fictional world that they control, hence aworld with no limits. As I see this breath taking scene, where this individual seems to be at the peak of the world, I think of only one word, life!

Life, my friend is the core of humanity it’s what makes the world go round, and throughout this process life offers individuals many opportunities and what defines you as an ambitious individualis how you cease this opportunity. Looking at the horizon in this magnificent scene, a person might overflow with emotions andfeelings that no words can describe, but this inspiring scene has an effect that is intrinsic; that levitates a person’s soul to infinity;and in the process revitalizes one’s thinking and refreshes his/her mind.

An opportunity may come to you in many different forms; one might be really hard to open and needs determination and an open mind to grasp. Take into account the famous entrepreneur, owner of Microsoft; Bill Gates; this person started his journey into success by grasping and ceasing an opportunity that he saw. However, this opportunity was the beginning of the line and in order to reach the end of the line he worked thoroughly and with determination. Reaching the end of the line; Bill Gates was presented with

the fruits of his work, and started “Microsoft” which changed our lives and

put us on the edge of our seats waiting for the upcoming technologies that will blow our minds.

On the other hand and opportunity might appear right in front of your face, and you simply have to take that opportunity and utilize its full potential. The most basic example would be if a recently graduated student is offered an opportunity to qualify for a scholarship to a well renowned university. This is just a small example of what life has to offer, and what a person does to embrace these opportunities defines his/her self character andresulting in a flourishing and colorful personality.

As a concluding statement I’d like to say that a picture paints a thousand words, but this picture right there expresses feelings deep within me that no word can express. Within the fictitiousworld a person paints with his imagination, a world with no limits is created and within this world a person is able to freely express his feelings with no limits that barricade his imagination, when this is achieved then the dream of a world with no limits will be fully emancipated. All in all, always remember that an opportunity only knocks once, so what you my friend must do is cease that opportunity and never let it get away… who knows you might end up like our friend Bill Gates!!!

FashionVictim

Have you ever wondered how fashion trends start in Kuwait?! I know. Every trend ever started in Kuwait first of all people say it’s horrible how can you wear that I won’t be caught dead in that!! And then the next day they do it!!! Nobody has their own personal-ity any more. Another thing too if one guy does a Mohawk every guy in Kuwait does a Mohawk, baggy or skinny jeans, pink t-shirts. why don’t you just leave the pink for the girls! if one guy does it they all do. I seriously hate that. If a girl does her {hejab} in a cretin way every girl in Kuwait does it the exact same way even though it look like you have horns on what’s up with that? oh and don’t for-get the buff, other girls actually challenge each other to how does the biggest buff hair do or even under the hejab . TELL ME WHY!!?? In my point of view everybody should have there own style don’t follow other people just wear what you want to wear not some-thing in a million years you would dream of wearing!!! You should always remember wear something that screams out (WORLD this is me and if you don’t like it I DON’T CARE!!!) expresses who you are from the inside not who you’re not. To some of you reader who may or may not know Green Day it’s a band that has this one song just screams out. the song is called Fashion Victim from there album WARNING! Year 2000 read and be amazed:

“He’s a victim of his own timeIn his “vintage suit” and tieHe’s casualty dressed to the teethIn the latest genocide

The new seasons come and goAt the dog and pony showGonna sit and beg and fetch the namesAnd fallow your dress codesWHAT’S IN A NAME? …HEY!

She’s a scented magazineLooking sharp and living cleanLiving well and dressed to killBut she looks like hell to me

So when you’re dancing through your wardrobeDo the anorex – a go-goCloaked with styleFor pedophiles as the credit card explodes

You auctioned off your lifeFor the “most” expensive priceGoing once…Going twice…Now it’s gone

What’s in a name, hey?What’s in a name, hey?What’s in a name?”

What is Fashion?? To me fashion is a statement of who you are

and what you like, but to other people, fashion is something you fallow as in clothes trends, hair styles, shoes and stuff like that.

What is an extraordinary life?

What’s your definition of an extraordinary life? There are as many answers as there are people. For some it may be to make $5 million and give it away to charity. For others, it may be to be a loving husband or a great mother.

Whatever your definition is, you deserve to be fulfilled in whatever direction you take your life. The challenge is that in today’s complex world, it’s so easy to get caught in the process of achieving so much, that it’s sometimes easy to lose focus of what you really want.

We believe to attain an extraordinary life—a life on your terms, one filled with unbridled joy, ultimate success and lasting fulfillment—it’s imperative you make progress in the areas of life that are most important to you. Anthony Rob-bins has uncovered and refined a unique system for anyone who wants to take their life to the next level

Three pillars of progress

1-Get focus and clarity

• Get a clear and compelling vision. • Have strong reasons to follow through. • Have total honesty about where you are.

Once you’re clear about what you want, how do you get the best results in the shortest period of time?

2-Get the best tools for result

• Get a proven map. • Model experts. • Set high standards. • Get a peer group that will hold you accountable. • Take daily action and consistently measure your progress.

Is it possible to have the best tools and still not follow through?

3-Unlock what’s stopping you

• Ask yourself: What beliefs, goals or values may be in con-flict?

• Re-align your psychology so you naturally take action in the direction you want most.

• Celebrate your achievements and pay it forward? • You can visit his websaite www.anthonyrobbins.comAsk yourself: What beliefs, goals or values may be in conflict?

• Re-align your psychology so you naturally take action in the direction you want most.

• Celebrate your achievements and pay it forward?

A Healthy Lifestyle

uniQue ArTiCLesby Reem Al-Othmanwww.nutri-viva.com

“It’s amazing how pervasive food is. Every second commercial is for food. Every second TV episode takes place around

a meal. In the city, you can’t go ten feet without seeing or smelling a restaurant. There are 20 foot high hamburgers up on billboards. I am acutely aware of food, and its omnipresence is astounding.“

Adam Scott, The Monkey Chow Diaries, June 2006 food is more like a global disease!, Every single person on earth thinks about food, how it looks like, what it tastes like, if it’s healthy or unhealthy, it’s actually one of the most important things in our daily lives, I mean c’mon…can you resist a delicious meal????

PS: I can’t! ;)

Now that’s a lovely lasagna!!

Anyway, back to our main course.. erm I mean.. main subject! *thinks about food yumm* ;D

It’s normal to feel hungry but is it normal to eat more than you need? The increasing obesity problem in Kuwait gives us a Big warning! Kuwaiti children are at higher risk of obesity due to the wide junk food chains in this country.

It makes us wonder why people avoid this issue? Are they too lazy to eat healthy food?....can’t they walk for at least one hour everyday?......is it some sort of a comfort thing to eat more than you need??

Living in a hot environment is not an excuse for being lazy [D1] ! I mean hey! you can always join a gym right?

Our society needs to change it’s ways, we need to establish a healthy life style similar to our forefathers!....it’s hard to change something in one day but practicing it daily makes a huge difference, you might find it hard to resist something you like, that does not make it impossible for you to overcome it!

The best solution is to start slow…..make small changes and then gradually work it through your diet.

Here are some tips to start a healthy life style:

(1)- Make your health a priority!

(2)- Change your old habits!

(3)- Exercise daily.

(4)- Eat lots of vegetables and fruits.

(5)- Do NOT use fast weight loss diets!

(6)- Avoid Caffeine and pick-me-up pills instead increase your energy naturally.

(7)- Water is an important part of health, so 8 glasses a day helps your body .

(8)- Stretching helps you with fitness.

(9)- Smile, laugh and stay motivated! J

Remember that your body is your temple, so you ought to respect it!

Good luck!

“The way in which small, even dysfunctional elements within a civilized world react against the dominant

culture”. This is one definition of terrorism, but we can find many other definitions depending on the point of

view of others. By this definition, I will discuss the issue of terrorism in the Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad,

by discussing the part of the definition which talks about “dysfunctional elements”, by giving examples of the act

of terrorism in the novel, and also by explaining symbols of terrorism.

Terrorismin the

Heart ofDarkness

50

Page 51: Issue 18

The definition says that terrorism can exist in a group

within a civilized world [country], they can be

dysfunctional group within this civilized [country].

And that’s exactly the issue in the Heart of Darkness.

The white men came into the heart of Africa which is

Congo as emissaries of light “dysfunctional elements”

within a civilized world [Europe], but the truth is they

were terrorists. The white men in the novel think they

are more civilized than the

black men [natives] & that

they’re bringing light to this

uncivilized country. They

were killing & destroying the

country just to conquer it in

order to make money through

the ivory trade. They came

to this country claiming to

be emissaries of light but the

truth is they came just for

money. And it turned out that

the black people don’t need

light because they are more

civilized than the white men,

& that’s the white men who

need to be enlightened.

One of the acts of terrorism in

the novel is the ivory trade. It

is inhumane because of the

killing and the savagery acts

it causes. The ivory trade makes the man loses all the

rules in work just to make money, because in the Heart

of Darkness there’s no restrain. Marlow thinks that this

country is not a place of darkness but it became one

because of the white man’s savagery actions.

Moreover, on the acts of terrorism committed by white

men is when Marlow witnesses the death of several

black people without the white man caring about their

death, which they’re responsible for. “I came upon a

boiler wallowing in the grass” and “where dark things

seemed to stir feebly”, these are the images of death

Marlow has witnessed. Terrorists don’t care about the

death of others as long as they achieve their goals.

They’re willing to kill, destroy, & corrupt the nature

of this country in order to make more money from

the ivory trade. “They were dying slowly – it was

very clear. They were not enemies, they were not

criminals, they were nothing earthly now – nothing

but black shadows of disease & starvation”, Marlow

admits that black people are

innocent natives who are

dying because of white men.

They’re treated as animals that

nobody cares about. How do

they die? Where do they die?

When do they die? And why

do they die?

The novel is full of symbols

that symbolize terrorism. Kurtz

is one of the great symbols. In

my opinion, Kurtz is a terrorist,

a dictator, he’s killing those

black people just to make

more money, and his actions

are full of savagery towards

the natives. But despite his

cruelness & corruption in

the country, the native still

adore him & worship him,

they’re willing to do anything

for him, they’re even willing to sacrifice their soul in

order to save his. One may ask, why do the native still

love Kurtz despite his actions toward them? Basically,

because they’re terrorized from him, they fear him;

they’re scared of him because of his terrorist acts.

Terrorism is an ambiguous word that can not be

defined, or explained. Any one can say what they

think terrorism means. But the thing is who has the

right to say that this act is terrorism? Who has the right

to define what is terrorism & what is not? And who has

the right to say that this man is a terrorist?

Ten Super Foods

1. Sweet Potatoes A nutritional All-Star — one of the best vegetables you can eat. They’re loaded with carotenoids, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. Bake and then mix in some unsweetened applesauce or crushed pineapple for extra moisture and sweetness.

2. Grape TomatoesThey’re sweeter and firmer than other tomatoes, and their bite-size shape makes them perfect for snacking, dipping, or salads. They’re packed with vitamin C and vitamin A, and you also get some fiber, some phytochemicals, and (finally) some flavor.

3. Fat-Free or 1 % MilkAn excellent source of calcium, vitamins, and protein with little or no artery-clogging fat and cholesterol. Likewise for low-fat yogurt. Soy milk can be just as nutritious — if the company fortifies it..

4. BroccoliIt has lots of vitamin C, carotenoids, and folic acid. Steam it briefly and add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes and a sprinkle of lemon juice.

5. Wild SalmonThe omega-3 fats in a fatty fish like salmon can help reduce the risk of sudden-death heart attacks. And salmon that is caught wild has less PCB contaminants than farmed salmon.

52

Page 53: Issue 18

For Better Health6. Crispbreads

Whole-grain rye crackers, like Wasa, Ry Krisp, and Ryvita — usu-ally called crispbreads — are loaded with fiber and often fat-free.

7. Microwaveable or “10-minute” ... Brown RiceEnriched white rice is nutritionally weak. When the grain is refined, you lose the fiber, magnesium, vitamins E and B-6, copper, zinc, and phytochemicals that are in the whole grain. Try quick-cooking or regular brown rice instead.

8. Citrus FruitGreat-tasting and rich in vitamin C, folic acid, and fiber. Perfect for a snack or dessert. Try different varieties: juicy Minneola oranges, snacksize Clementines, or tart grapefruit.

9. Diced Butternut SquashA growing number of grocery stores sell peeled, diced butternut squash that’s ready to go into the oven, a stirfry, or a soup. Every half-cup has 5 grams of fiber and payloads of vitamins A and C.

10. Spinach or KaleThese standout leafy greens are jampacked with vitamins A, C, and K, folate, potassium, magnesium, iron, lutein, and phytochemi-cals

Frozen Shoulder

The term “Frozen Shoulder” doesn’t mean that your shoulder is actually “Frozen”, this injury is named

like that because this type of injury will alter many of the shoulder joint movements; so the best word to describe it is “Frozen”.

The shoulder joint is a complex which, like any other joint, consists of; bones, ligaments, muscles, capsule, tendons, and synovial fluid. The structure of the shoulder joint begins with the bones and between them is the synovial fluid, then comes a very strong tissue called the capsule that holds the joint and gives it a good level of stabilization, after that the ligaments + tendons + muscles construct the rest of the joint. Due to the shoulder joint’s position and its role in connect-ing both arms to the body, a stressful amount of load is ap-plied on the shoulders, in which eventually will cause many injuries to it. One of the most common injuries between males and females is “Frozen Shoulder”.

This type of injury hits the capsule part of the shoulder, which makes it “shrink”. When the capsule “shrinks” it will cause the shoulder to lose mobility and some of its range of motion, in the end it will cause a lot of pain and inability to move your shoulder in any direction.

uniQue HeaLThBy Hamad D. Al-Othman - Physical [email protected]

Ok, the real question is: What makes the capsule shrinks and cause this injury?

Any type of injury to the shoulder will lead to this injury at the end. When you fell pain or injure your shoulder by any means, you will try to not move it a lot to protect it, this will cause you’re your capsule to shrink and cause frozen shoul-der. Another way to this injury is in-activity and obtaining bad life habits.

Now how can you treat it? The best method of treatment for this type of injury in physical therapy is stretching exercises + Underwater exercises (Hydrotherapy) in order to regain the normal range of motion and decrease the pain; follows that strengthening of the shoulder muscles to maintain the progress of treatment at the end stages of the physical ther-apy treatment program.

It is best before jumping into conclusions that you have fro-zen shoulder or not when you feel pain in your shoulders that you go to an orthopedic doctor to diagnose your injury. If you’re positive that you have “Frozen shoulder” then it’s better to visit a Physical therapist to teach how to treat it and how to do the exercises at home. Note that people who have diabetes will take longer time to heal from this injury.

VOLVOS60 Concept

A few days before Christmas, Volvo

Cars treats the automo-tive world to an early unwrapping of a car that will shine bright in the streets for years to come. The Volvo S60 Concept gives the car world a glimpse of what the all-new Volvo S60 is going to look like when it arrives in 2010.

62

Page 63: Issue 18

“The all-new S60 will be one of the strongest players in a segment where the competition is razor-sharp,” says Volvo Cars President and CEO Ste-phen Odell.

The coupe-inspired lines that gave the original S60 its characteristic stance are even more pronounced in the next generation.

“The sporty design gives visual prom-ise of an enthusiastic drive and I can assure you here and now that the all-new S60 will live up to that prom-ise. The driving properties are better than in any previous Volvo. The car’s technology will also help you to be a better and safer driver,” says Stephen Odell.

The concept car reveals that the Vol-vo Cars design team is stepping up to the next level in the development of the products’ DNA.

“The concept car’s exterior gives a clear indication of what customers can expect of the all-new S60. On the inside we’ve been even more daring - there the focus has been on creating a vision of the future in the slightly longer perspective,” says Volvo Cars Design Director Steve Mattin.

CO2-emissions at 119g/km

The engine that Volvo Cars has cho-sen for the Volvo S60 Concept is a four-cylinder 1.6-litre petrol unit us-ing high-efficiency GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) tech-nology and producing 180 horse-power.

In a conventional petrol engine, fuel is injected into the inlet manifold ahead of the inlet valves. With direct injection, however, the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber under high pres-sure.

The engine in combination with a range of other technical mea-sures makes it possible to cut carbon dioxide emissions to 119 g/km (5.0 l/100 km).

Volvo Cars’ first production car with GTDi technology will be in-troduced during the second half of 2009.

Electric power steering, stratified combustion and other measures

In addition to GTDi technology, the Volvo S60 Concept integrates the following technical features to bring CO2 emissions down to 119 g/km:

- Stratified combustion. The combustion chamber is designed such that a mist consisting of the optimal blend of air and fuel is formed around the spark plug, surrounded in turn by pure air. This allows

the engine to operate with a surplus of air, thus cutting fuel con-sumption.

- Start/stop, a functionality that switches off the engine when the car is at a standstill.

- Powershift. Two manual gearboxes work in parallel, each regu-lated by its own clutch.

- EPAS (Electric Power Assisted Steering). In principle an “electric servo” where the conventional hydraulic pump has been replaced by an electric motor.

- “DRIVe-Mode”. Gives the driver the possibility of reducing fuel consumption via an “economy mode” that limits the function of a number of selected electrical or mechanical systems.

- Grille shutter. A wind-deflecting panel that can be closed to re-duce air drag when there is less need for cooling air.

- Flat underbody panels.

- The use of lightweight materials in the car body

Europe’s premier club competition was launched one month after UEFA’s first Congress, held in Vienna on 2

March 1955 yet, curiously, the so-called “European Cup” was not a UEFA initiative.

French founders

Whereas many of UEFA’s founder members were more interested in establishing a national team competition, the French sports daily L’Equipe and their then-editor Gabriel Hanot, were championing the cause for a European-wide club competition. Hanot, together with colleague Jacques Ferran, designed a blueprint for a challenge tournament to be played on Wednesdays under floodlights.

Sporting record

The tournament initiated by L’Equipe did not stipulate that the participating teams had to be champions of their country, but they invited clubs who they considered had the most fan appeal. Representatives of 16 clubs were invited to meetings on 2 and 3 April 1955 and the L’Equipe rules were unanimously approved. The first European ChampionsClubs’ Cup fixture was played in Lisbon and Sporting Clubede Portugal were held to a 3-3 draw by FK Partizan. The Yugoslav side won the return leg in Belgrade 5-2 to advance to the next round.

Madrid dominate

Real Madrid CF immediately made the tournament their own by winning the first five finals. Since then, other clubs havealso enjoyed fruitful runs in the competition with AFC Ajax and FC Bayern München both completing three consecutive wins. However, no one club has been able to claim long-term domination. Ajax waited 22 years to add a fourth title to the hat-trick obtained in the early 1970s; Madrid’s win in

1998 was their first in 32 years; and Bayern’s penalty shoot-out success in Milan in 2001 ended a 26-year wait for their fourth success.

Liverpool success

Liverpool FC’s four victories between 1977 and 1984 deserve special mention as the English club won its four trophies with essentially different teams. The Reds’ European pedigree shone brightly again in 2005 when they battled back from 3-0 down to defeat AC Milan on penalties in what was perhaps the competition’s most exciting and memorable final.

Honours list

Real Madrid CF and AC Milan have been the most successful sides in the UEFA Champions League, winning the competition three times. Madrid are also the most successful side overall with nine triumphs, followed by seven for Milan, five for Liverpool and four each for Bayernand Ajax. Madrid also hold the record for final appearances, with 12. Milan’s 2002/03 success came after a marathon 19 games from the third qualifying round of the competition all the way to their penalty shoot-out success against Juventus in the final.

Competition change

The major turning point in the evolution of the competition came in the 1992/93 season when the UEFA Champions League, involving a group stage in addition to the traditional knockout elements, was officially inaugurated after a pilotround robin during the previous season. The popularity of the group phase has witnessed the competition grow from eight to 32 teams with matches taking place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays across Europe.

Fringe follows the exploits of FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham, scientist Walter Bishop, and his son Pe-ter as they investigate aspects of fringe science (telepathy, levitation, invisibility, reanimation, genetic

mutation, etc). All over the world, a series of apparent experiments collectively referred to as “the Pattern” (e.g., a newborn baby who rapidly ages and dies within a few hours, a bus full of passengers trapped in a strange substance like mosquitoes in amber) are occurring for reasons unknown. Olivia, Peter, and Walter are in charge of investigating these strange events to determine their source. Connected to the Pattern is a company called Massive Dynamic, which is a leading global research company that holds the patents for a number of new and important technologies. Throughout the first half of the first season, Mitchell Loeb, a rogue FBI agent, orchestrates some of these events as part of a larger plan to break a man out of prison and kidnap Olivia.

from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus

both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet’s op-

erations, where they find out a terrible secret that may lead to the possible

- First, can you introduce yourself? & for how long have you been working at GUST?

Nada: I joined GUST in 2006; it has been almost 3 years now. I work as a sport supervisor.

Ahmad: I’m new at GUST. I started working in 2008 as a PE Instructor.

- How can you define your experience as an athletic supervisor &organizer in this well-known university?

Nada: My experience lies in organizing matches, championships. Also meeting people from other universities through these sport activities.

Ahmad: I can define my experience from the mistakes doneregarding sport in general & learn from them. Exploring GUST sport facilities, how to run the, & how to use them for our advantage. And also having outside relations between student & other universities, which is considered a marketing tool.

- What kind of activities do you organize or participate in?

Nada: we have a lot of games that we organize, such as group games; football, basketball, handball, volleyball. & Individual games; tennis, table tennis, taekwondo & squash.

GUST Sports Activities

Gulf University for Science & Technology is a well-known academic campus in Kuwait for it’s the first private

university to be established. GUST has many activities indoor & outdoor its campus, where students can participate to enrich their experience & win championships.

We get to interview Mrs. Nada Al-Kharaz & Ahmad Al-Majed the supervisors & the organizers of these events to tell us more about the athletic activities of GUST.

- Have you ever included the Faculty in these athletic events?

Nada & Ahmad: Yes, we did it once in a football match, where the students had great fun because they got the opportunity to beat their teachers, which they did.

- What are the achievements of GUST locally & internationally?

Nada: we always get either the 1st or the 2nd place in almost all of the games

- Have you ever participated in an international championship?

Nada: Yes, we did, just once & it was in the USA.

- Can you tell us about your latest participation in the US where you won 1 gold medal & 1 bronze?

Nada: Well, it was a very long & tiring trip (22 hrs) but we had great fun there. They welcomed us warmly & were very hospitable. Then we had some training in the US Taekwondo Union. The best part was when we won 1 gold medal & 1 bronze, it was really overwhelming, & we had other participants from other countries asking about how our students won, because all the other participants were professionals. And the student were very proud of themselves & of GUST because they were able to achieve something in the name of their own university.

- What kind of training do you provide for the students?

Nada & Ahmad: we have coaches who supervise on students & train them regularly. And also we go to camps to develop the training of the students.

- Do you provide them with a strict diet plan to follow in order to maintain their fitness?

Nada & Ahmad: well, we have our Taekwondo coach who observes the students weight & fitness. He makes them lose orreach a specific weight before any championship.

- Currently, you offer football, handball, volleyball, tennis, table-tennis, basketball & squash programs for both genders. Is there

any new program to be offered to students soon?

Nada: There’s a game called Moto, but it’s very dangerous & it may not be offered to GUST students.

Ahmad: And there’s also a game called Aikido, which will be trained by one of GUST faculty members if offered.

- What are your upcoming events?

Nada: we have many upcoming matches for males which are; football, basketball, & table tennis. And for females, we have: volleyball, tennis, squash, & taekwondo.

- Any final word you would like to say?

Ahmad: We would like to thank all of the students for their effort to put GUST name always on the top. And we hope that soon we’ll get more development, & extra training.

If you’ve never Googled, you probably aren’t finding what you want online. Google operates the leading Internet search engine, offering targeted search re-sults from billions of Web pages. Results are based on a proprietary algorithm -- Google’s technology for ranking Web pages is called PageRank. The com-pany generates nearly all of its revenue through ad sales. Advertisers can deliver relevant ads targeted to search queries or Web content. Google also oper-ates the Google Network, a network of third party customers that use Google’s advertising programs to deliver relevant ads to their own Web sites. Founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page each have nearly 30% voting control of the company.

What OK means?

WORD HISTORY OK is a quintessentially Ameri-can term that has spread from English to many other languages. Its origin was the subject of scholarly de-bate for many years until Allen Walker Read showed that OK is based on a joke of sorts. OK is first record-

ed in 1839 but was probably in circulation before that date. During the 1830s there was a humoristic fashion in Boston newspapers to reduce a phrase to initials and supply an explanation in parenthe-ses. Sometimes the abbreviations were misspelled to add to the humor. OK was used in March 1839 as an abbreviation for all correct, the joke being that nei-ther the O nor the K was correct. Originally spelled with periods, this term outlived most similar abbre-viations owing to its use in President Martin Van Buren’s 1840 campaign for reelection. Because he was born in Kinderhook, New York, Van Buren was nicknamed Old Kinderhook, and the abbreviation proved eminently suitable for political slogans. That same year, an editorial referring to the receipt of a pin with the slogan O.K. had this comment: “fright-ful letters … significant of the birth-place of Mar-tin Van Buren, old Kinderhook, as also the rallying word of the Democracy of the late election, ‘all cor-rect’ .... Those who wear them should bear in mind that it will require their most strenuous exertions … to make all things O.K.”

A trademark used for an Internet search engine. This trademark often occurs in print as a verb, sometimes in lowercase: “A high school English teacher … recently Googled a phrase in one student’s paper and found it

had been taken from a sample essay of an online editing service” (Chris Berdik).

5 New Things That Will Blow Your Mind

Sure, with your cell phone, MP3 player and BlackBerry, you probably think you have enough gadgets in your life. But here are innovations that even the most weary of consumers can appreciate. From a game controller you swing like a racquet

to software that can translate your speech into Chinese, a few of the coolest things out there.

Flight Plan

With fuel costs at an all-time high, Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, which

will go into production next year, will be taking off at just the right time. Thanks to ad-

vanced engines and a body that’s 50% lightweight carbon-fiber composite, the 787 uses 20% less fuel

than similar-size planes yet has the range of much larger jets. It also promises greater passenger comforts. Cabin pressure will be closer to sea level, easing pressure build-up in the sinuses and ears. Humidity will be set at 15% to 20%, rather than around 5%. And instead of pulldown shades, the windows will have “electrochromatic” con-trols that change the tint of the pane from clear to opaque. “Passengers will notice a difference in the way they feel at the end of a 787

flight,” says Walt Gillette, Boeing’s vice president of airplane de-

velopment.

Control Freak

When it comes to video-game controllers, Nintendo has always

been an innovator. Back when Atari and its one-button joystick ruled, Nintendo devised

a two-button controller with a directional thumb pad. Then came action-sensitive vibration, wireless

connectivity and an analog stick for 360˚ steering. Now the company hopes to shake things up with a wireless controller for next year’s Revolution console that will allow players to apply real-world physical experience to games. The one-handed grip has motion and position sensors, so if

you’re playing a Ping-Pong game, you just flick the con-troller like a paddle. Or, to shoot, take aim and

tap a button. For more elaborate games, a second piece with analog stick and two

triggers (for that extra itchy finger) can be connected.

Fat Fighter

In the twilight of the Atkins age, people are

realizing that while carbs may still be an enemy, fat is no

friend. Does that mean you have to ditch the deep fryer? Maybe not. Proteus

Industries of Gloucester, Mass., has devel-oped a technique to extract proteins from animal muscle, creating a coating for chicken nuggets, fish sticks and other foods that prevents excess oil from pene-trating beyond the breading or batter. The food looks simi-lar on the outside, but it’s not greasy on the inside. That translates into real fat busting: the overall content in fish sticks, for instance, goes from 14 g to as little as 4 g—a 70% drop. Proteus’ process is making its debut in

fish sticks from the company’s local collabora-tor, Good Harbor Fillet. Someday, it may be

used by home cooks as well.

Cross Talk

You’re on vacation in China, trying to get di-

rections to a hotel, when you realize you’ve left your Mandarin

phrase book on the plane. Fortunate-ly, you have your Pocket PC, equipped

with IBM’s Multilingual Automatic Speech-to-Speech Translator. MASTOR recognizes both

Mandarin and English, automatically translating what it hears into the other tongue, so two people who speak different languages can have a conversation. In a TIME test, when told the phrase “I would like to rent a motorboat,” MASTOR translated it audibly and flashed a picture of a boat onscreen. Although in its infancy—right now

it can handle only English, Mandarin and a bit of Spanish and Arabic—the software is in pilot

programs. Systems featuring MASTOR may crop up at airports, banks and hospi-

tals in the next few years.

Music from Heaven

Here come the wireless music stores. Late last year, Europe and Asia launched

services for downloading full-length songs straight to mobile phones, and consumers re-

sponded. Now the U.S. is ready to get into the game, as AT&T, Sprint and Verizon Wireless all plan to launch

over-the-air music stores next year. “There’s an instantness that is amazing,” says EMI’s Adam Klein, who has helped carriers around the world launch music services. A mobile music store requires networks that can support fast down-loading. Sprint and Verizon now have them, and AT&T will soon. Verizon may be the first to launch a wireless music store in the U.S., as it is already selling phones capable of tapping into the network. One to watch

for: the new Samsung SCH-a950, a clamshell phone with stereo speakers and a thumb-

wheel for cuing up songs fast.

PEDIGREE

Ansata Hejazi’s sire Ansata Halim Shah was appreciated by breeders around the globe for his type and prepotency. And his dam Ansata Sudarra is one of those beautiful mares who produced one superb foal after another. Ansata Hejazi’s full sister is the well-known champion producer Ansata Nefara

– the dam of Ansata Sinan and Ansata Iemhotep. Hejazi’s maternal grandam was the matriarch Ansata Delilah – one of the all-time heroines of straight Egyptian lines.

PERSONALITY

Hejazi has been much appreciated by trainers and breeders for his exceptional temperament, which is reminiscent of his grandsire, Ansata Ibn Halima. Hejazi is like an Arabian stallion should be – proud and daring, undaunted and courageous. You can take an Arabian horse out of the desert but you can’t take the desert out of the Arabian horse! And Hejazi is back in the desert…

Advice of The Month

Advice is known that it’s hard to be said & accepted in the same time, but in many situations, it can be very use-ful to the person him/her-self.

Those who are close to you have the courage to advise you because they care about you & want the best for you. Beside, no one can accept any kind of advice from other people except dear ones. Therefore; when you’re advised with a good advice & you feel that it helped you in your life, do not keep it for yourself. Try to advise others around you if you think they need it, so they can benefit from it.

“The only thing to do with good advice is pass it on; It is never of any use to

oneself”

Oscar Wilde
