A WORD FROM JACK PETCHEY CBEWelcome to another fantas c issue of Inspire and what an issue it is. We have had a busy couple of months launching our new partnership with the Prince’s Founda on for Children and the Arts, the gradua on of our second Achievers Network and another incredibly successful Glee Club Challenge Final. Not to men on our Lord Mayor’s Show entry and the planning and prepara on of all of the events and programmes that will mark our 15th Anniversary.

I set up the Founda on on two guiding principles, my 50/50 ethos – you fund half, I’ll fund half, but also on the basis that not everyone can excel, but everyone can try. I am so pleased that we will be awarding our 150,000th Achievement Award as you read this newsle er. I hope that you will celebrate with us and con nue to recognise and reward our fabulous young people so that they can achieve and believe. Always remember – If you think you can, you can!

CONFIDENCE, OPPORTUNITY AND ACHIEVEMENT - THE ACHIEVERS NETWORK GRADUATION

Our second cohort of young achievers graduated from the Achievers Network programme at the Royal Bank of Scotland in October. Every member delivered a three minute presenta on on their experience and development, each with resounding affi rma ons of

personal development, memorable experiences and a lot of volunteering! Each year we invite Achievement Award winners to apply to join the network and twenty seven young people completed the programme which includes volunteering, mentoring, self evalua on and skills development over the course of the year. One of the challenges of the programme is to raise a commitment fee which can be doubled in the form of a grant to invest in their personal development or to con nue their volunteering a er their gradua on. This year the graduates have applied for a range of items including launching a gi wrapping business, undertaking guitar lessons and

hos ng a charity event for a children’s hospice. The third Achievers Network is currently underway and we look forward to seeing them grow and develop. They will be supported by four graduates who have volunteered to con nue as young leaders and will shape and deliver elements of the training for this year’s programme.

VOLUNTEERING IS GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH - AND SO IS OUR SUPPORT! Not only are we celebra ng our 15th

year, but we are also celebra ng a number of milestones too – and we are par cularly proud to have given out £500,000 to support volunteering since our Individual Grants for Volunteering

programme was launched in 2010! One of the volunteers we have supported is former Press and PR Offi cer Harry Shepherd who applied for a grant to support his volunteering project in Nicaragua a er leaving the Founda on. Not only did he successfully receive a grant, but Harry is also the 10,000th young person to fi ght poverty with Interna onal Ci zen Service. In an interview to mark the milestone, Harry says, “I would recommend ICS to other young people because it is a constant learning curve that begins

before you arrive in the country and con nues long a er you leave. Working alongside communi es and volunteers of diff erent backgrounds, living with host families, comple ng the project and learning about development in a wider context off ers a truly unique experience for young people to take forward in whatever fi eld they choose.”To fi nd out how to apply for our Individual Grant for Volunteering worth up to £300 please visit our website www.jackpetcheyfoundation.org.uk/individual-grants-for-volunteering

INFINITONES TAKE NUMBER 1 SPOT AT JACK PETCHEY GLEE CLUB CHALLENGE2014’s Jack Petchey Glee Club Challenge Final took place in December at Queen Elizabeth’s Hall on London’s Southbank. Over 200 young people from ten groups took to the stage in front of 950 audience members and the four celebrity judges Tamzin Outhwaite, John Partridge, Daniel Boys and Brenda Emmanus. Head Judge Tamzin Outhwaite said “I was absolutely blown away by these incredibly talented young people, we laughed and we cried and I have to say that it was one of the toughest evenings of my life. They all deserved to win!”But there could only be one winner and the crown went to a capella group Infi nitones from St Michael’s Catholic Grammar School who wowed the judges with their performances of Royals and Princess of China. Infi nitones

was created independently by eight year 10 girls who wanted to bring together their unique musical talents. Having worked with the ar s c team along the way, the girls stunned the judges scoring the highest marks in the four judging criteria: vocal ability, visuals , teamwork and entertainment value. They were joined on the podium by Young and Talented in 2nd and Scene II Theatre School & Academy in 3rd place. The Ar s c Team award went to Freedom Academy who were taking part in their second Grand Final. All four groups received a trophy and a share of the £5,000 prize fund. Infi nitones will take to the stage again at Ignite - A Fes val of Youth on Sunday 15th March 2015 at London’s Theatre Royal – details of which are overleaf.

Students compete for a place in one of our 37 Regional Finals, and the top 15 speakers from these will go forward into our Grand Final in July 2015.Last year’s winning speaker, Artemis Irvine on ‘The Language of Feminism,’ blew away the judges and claimed the tle of Speak Out Challenge Champion 2014. NEW ART PROGRAMME LAUNCHES IN NORTH LONDON The Jack Petchey Founda on has been working with The Prince’s Founda on for Children and the Arts’ Start programme this year, to enable the Saatchi Gallery and the Ins tute of Interna onal Visual Arts (Iniva) to give pupils from schools in deprived areas crea ve experiences outside of their everyday environment. The Saatchi Gallery off ers students between the ages of 11 and 18 from seven schools in Enfi eld the opportunity to explore the Gallery’s cu ng edge contemporary art, hear exhibi ng ar sts talk about their work and life, and work with professional ar sts to create their own video art inspired by their

The project culminates in a student exhibi on that will be viewed by thousands of people in July 2015.Iniva invites two hundred students from secondary schools across the Borough of Havering to par cipate in their Occupied Spacesproject at Rivington Place, East London. Students are encouraged to think cri cally about the spaces young people occupy today, exploring themes of protest and social gatherings, and how these can lead to a fairer society. The project aims to inspire the students’

imagina ons by exploring the roles of makers, thinkers, doers and ac vists within a crea ve environment. For more informa on visit: www.childrenandarts.org.uk/our-projects/start/
