Thursday 6 Parent/Teacher Interviews-early dismissal at 12:50 pm

From the Principal A sense of anticipation is building at the school as the set for “Disco Inferno” takes shape on the

school’s theatre stage. Rehearsals have been going well and opening night is now only a week

away. For ticket information see the article later in this edition of Gang Gang. In other theatre-

related news, architects are now completing the final design work to enable the school to go to

tender for the theatre upgrade. This upgrade should then be completed by the start of next year, or

shortly thereafter.

One of my roles at this time of year is to give a weekly tour for prospective new enrolments. This is

an enjoyable activity as it allows me to talk about the positive learning experience at our school

and the many innovative programs that we run. Two such programs that I visited this week with

my tour group were the “Tread Lightly” Year 7 Active Learning Project and the “Taking the

Challenge” program in Year 9. In “Tread Lightly” our students learn about sustainability and the

need to leave as small a footprint as possible on our environment. In “Taking the Challenge”

students are currently investigating “My Future” where they look at the world of work and the

process of applying for and gaining future employment.

On Thursday 6 September we are holding our Parent/Teacher Night. This is an opportunity for

you to visit our school and discuss with our teachers your child’s progress in each of their classes.

Information regarding the online booking process for the Parent/Teacher night is given later in this

edition of Gang Gang. Please note that students will be dismissed from school early on this day at

12.50pm.

Parents also need to note that the day before our Parent/Teacher Night is currently flagged as an

AEU Strike Day. I do not yet know the number of staff who will be taking strike action, however, on

the strike day earlier this year we were unable to offer any normal classes. As soon as further

information is known it will be communicated to all parents.

Year 10 excursion to Romeo and Juliet

On Thursday 26 July the Year 10 students were fortunate enough to see a

fabulous production of Romeo and Juliet performed by The Bell Shakespeare

Company. Students travelled to the National Theatre in St Kilda to watch a

modern interpretation of the play which they all studied during Term 2. It was

very interesting to see how the play they had read and seen films of had been

adapted to the stage. It was fast paced and energetic and really brought

Shakespeare’s language and characters to life.

which enriched the learning of the Year 10 students.

Year 9 SYN Radio excursion

On Wednesday 8 August a small group of budding radio announcers

travelled into the youth radio station, SYN, at RMIT to make their own radio

program. In the 90 minute workshop the students brainstormed, rehearsed

and recorded their show. There was much laughter and just a little bit of

nervousness when faced with the microphone and the prospect of hearing

your voice over the soundwaves. The students involved had a great time

and it was a valuable learning experience.

Another group of students will have the opportinity to attend the radio workshop next week.

Coles for Sport vouchers

Thank you to everyone who has handed in Coles for Sport vouchers again this year. We have had

a fantastic response and the vouchers have now finished, so we will tally them and let you know

what equipment the School will receive. Thank you.

Brooks Duathlon:

Well done to three students who completed their first ever duathlon. Lexie Hipwell, Brooke Hartley

& James Puls-Welsh registered at the crack of dawn at Yarra Boulevard, Richmond, to face the

challenge of a run, bike, run. Conditions were great; a little cold, but fine, with only light head wind

for part of the bike section. They all coped extremely well, moving seamlessly through transition

with serious athletes around them. James completed his event in 38 minutes, finishing 12th in the

male division. Brooke and Lexie crossed the finish together, in a time of 45 minutes, finishing 16th

and 17th respectively in the female division. They had a great time and are looking forward to the

next duathlon events. If you are interested in participating in duathlons, there is still a number of

events to come! Feel free to contact Mrs Rayner for more information.

Year 11 VCE Phys Ed Excursion to ICE House

As part of our Unit 2 we are studying key learning principles; the stages of learning, skilled and unskilled performance, characteristics, factors affecting performances and coaching styles, and techniques.

Well ice hockey proved to be an experience where some of our most talented sporting students found they were completely back to basics. This was fantastic in terms of our assessment work as the students could recognise their movement back through the initial stages of learning, making errors, falling down and the need for helpful feedback.

It was a great day, Such a valuable learning experience! Certainly very intense and physically demanding, but the students persevered and progressed while they certainly had a lot of fun.

Robbie Kearns Year 7/8 Boys Rugby

Another great day was had in terms of

rugby development, this time for the Year

7/8 boys who experienced a steep learning

curve. All the boys played extremely well

against some large schools and physical

opponents. We had two teams enter the

competition. Our B team played their

hearts out in every game, against

Carranballac, Manor Lakes, Vic University

and Thomastown. Unfortunately they lost each game, however, they still progressed and scored

some tries against the opposition which in itself was an accomplishment.

Our A team also had a wonderful experience. They lost 2 out of their 3 games; 4 to 2 tries against

Carranballic 1, an even closer game 5 to 4 tries against Kurunjang only narrowly losing. The boys

continued to develop so much that they won their final game convincingly 4 tries to 1 against

Rosehill. Good job to all the boys and I look forward to working with you again next year.

I would also like to thank Mr Kahukiwa for taking the boys, certainly making the whole experience

an enjoyable one for the boys and especially for Jonty Ruston and Mitchell Selleck for assisting

with the coaching. All students did a great job, representing themselves and our school to a

fantastic level. Thanks very much.

Year 9 Gymnastics

Our final group of Year 9 classes completed their gymnastics

enrichment program this week. The students worked very hard. Both

sessions were quite intense with students developing their skills on

the floor and on various pieces of the apparatus. Students worked on

the rings, the horizontal bars, trampolines and the tramp into the pit.

Some students really excelled working towards a double sommersault

and Dale Smith worked especially hard improving his double

sommersault with half twist. Well done to all, again you worked hard,

listened with care and respect and represented the school

fantastically!

Relay For Life.

We are well underway with developing the official Hope banner for the opening and closing

ceremonies of the relay. A sausage sizzle will be held at the IGA supermarket in Warrandyte on

Sunday 26 August so please come along and support such a worthy cause. We will also be

holding one at school at lunch time on Thursday 30 August. All support and donations would be

greatfully accepted. Hope bags can be bought for $2 for the candlelit ceremony from the Office.

National Health & Physical Education Day

At Warrandyte High School we are always ready to take up a new challenge.

The first ever National Health & PE day is

approaching on 4 September where we would

like to join in the making of history and help

record a new Australian record for the largest

number of students running/walking on the same

day.

The world’s circumference spans approximately

40,000km and the goal for national Health &

Physical Education Day’s Run Around the World

Challenge is to encourage as many students & staff to run/walk at least 1km each. We will be

participating over lunch time and hopefully making it a quite enjoyable experience with prizes and

We look forward to reporting on our preparations as the event day gets closer and on how many

2012 AFL Superkick Competition

Warrandyte High School students have been given the opportunity to

participate in the first ever Hawthorn Hawks Super Kick Competition. It’s

a fun and exciting way for students to improve their football kicking skills,

whilst earning bragging rights for the longest kick. The competition was

conducted within two age groups for boys and girls – under 14’s and

under 16’s. It took place over two lunchtimes, with a hoard of students

signing up and kicking for glory. A big thank you to all of the students who

entered the competition for their great efforts.

The eventual winners for the boys age groups were Brendan Williams (U16) with a massive 46m

kick and Luke Killey (U14) who torp’d the ball 39m. Holly Mulder achieved success with her

whopping 28m kick in the girls group. These fantastic competitors will now receive a certificate and

a synthetic Sherrin footy for their outstanding kicks. Furthermore, they have been invited to attend

the Hawks Super Kick Grand Finals to kick off against students from other secondary schools.

This will be held at the home of Hawthorn F.C. (Waverley Park, Stadium Circuit, Mulgrave) on

Tuesday 4 September, from 11am – 1pm. The students will be given the chance to observe a

Hawks training session and meet a few of the players who will be helping out with the competition.

The overall winners in each age and gender group will win a Hawks t-shirt and a signed Hawthorn

playing jumper. We wish Brendan, Luke and Holly all the best and hope they are crowned the

Hawks Super Kick ‘Biggest Kicker’ for 2012.

Rotary Science Experience

Once again the Rotary Club of Donvale/Warrandyte is offering to send students on a Science experience at a university in Melbourne over the Christmas break. This is open to students currently in Years 9 and 10. Please contact Helene Butterworth if you would like more information.

Disco Inferno

Currently the cast are hard at work rehearsing Disco Inferno. The performances will be on the 30, 31 August and 1 September. Tickets are available at a cost of $20.00 each and can be booked online through our website www.warrandytehigh.vic.edu.au, click on the link.

Parent Teacher Interviews Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Thursday 6 September from 2.30-5.30pm and then 6.30-8.30pm. The website will be open for you to book your interviews on Monday 3 September from 9am. Parents are invited to make five minute appointments with your child’s teachers. We use an online booking service for this. The website is www.schoolinterviews.com.au and the event code is SVW3U. It a very easy process. Go onto the website, type in the event code and click the ‘Go’ button, select the teacher you require, then the time for your booking. Your child will be given their interim report on Thursday 30 August. We encourage all students to come to the interviews with their parents. If you have any problems please call the General Office for assistance on 9844 2749. Students will be dismissed early at 12.50pm on this day. Panorama buses will run at an earlier time to accommodate this early dismissal. However, Invicta and National buses will run to their normal timetable. Parents of students who would usually catch these buses home will need to make alternative arrangements.

Uniform

Our uniform supplier is fcw fashion. They operate a uniform shop from the school premises on Tuesdays from 3-3:45 pm and Thursdays from 8-9:30 am. Uniforms can also be ordered online at www.fcw.com.au.

Careers

Last week the Eastland Careers EXPO took place. This was a wonderful event with all the major

Universities and TAFEs present for you to ask questions and get the information needed regarding

possible courses you may choose once you complete your VCE.

It was great to run into a few students planning their pathways for 2013 and beyond and give any

assistance if needed.

Course Counselling has been going well, by now all Year 9,10 and 11 students have had a

counselling session and their subject selections should be completed, signed by parents and

handed in to the Senior School or Careers office. If these forms have not been handed in then

subject selection may not be guaranteed.

Year 12 students counselling commences this week and goes until 21 September. Every Year 12

student has been given an appointment time with either Ms Miller or Ms Lamb. Students

will be counselled on their 2013 pathways into University, TAFE, or employment. If students have

not received their appointment times they need to check the schedule with me or look at the list in

the VCE Centre. Parents are most welcome to attend these appointments.

I encourage all Year 12 students to register with VTAC prior to the end of Term 3. Registrations

close on September 28. If you do not register by this date the cost is substantially higher. Another

factor to consider is that students will not be offered a place at University or TAFE if they are not

registered with VTAC.

Ride to Conquer Cancer

The ‘Ride to Conquer Cancer’ is a fundraising event for

the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute. I have formed a

team of five called Team Treeby consisting of my

family and close friends including Stephen Parkin and

would like to take this opportunity to ask the school

community to support myself and Stephen by making a donation.

We will be riding on October 27 and 28 from Albert Park to Healesville and back covering a

distance of approximately 200 kilometres.

The statistics are now showing that 1 in 2 people develop cancer. Most families are now touched

by cancer and mine is no different. I have lost my mother, brother and father in law to cancer and

my husband is a survivor of cancer. We also have close friends who are battling cancer.

Donations can be made by logging online to http://ml12.conquercancer.org.au selecting donate,

search for Team Treeby and donate to either myself or Stephen or a cash donation to the General

Office.
