The God of CarnageThe God of Carnage is the latest and arguably most successful of YasminaReza's plays. It has been widely staged around the world, and translated into

many languages. It has won numerous awards, including the Laurence OlivierAward for best play in London's West End (2008) and a Tony Award for Best

Play on Broadway (2009).

The play is ostensibly about two sets of parents - Veronica and Michael, and

Anita and Alan - who meet to resolve an issue between their two 11 -year-oldsons. The boys have gotten into a fight on the playground, and the parentshave gathered to make peace. Their meeting, which is initially laced with

politeness, quickly spirals out of control. The playground fight between theboys becomes a catalyst for both sets of parents to reveal their own inherentcruelty, savagery, and selfishness.

The play brings up themes of savagery versus civilization, personal

responsibility, parenting and global relations as Reza peels away the layersof these four characters to reveal their atrocious cores. With this play, Reza

exposes the fragility and hollowness of civilisation. The systems throughwhich humans achieve political and social progress [the most crucial of which is

language) are depicted as mere facades, and in the play, Reza illustrates thatbeneath humanity's civilized trappings, all people are savages.

The four milestone productions in Carnage's history (Zurich, Paris,London and New York) alternately emphasised, overlooked, looked at andembellished upon the themes provided by Reza's text. It is a pleasure to

bring this production to Warrandyte. We have assembled a high quality castof experienced local actors, who have worked extremely hard to bring theircharacters to life - heartfelt thanks to Naomi, Simone, Tony and Adrian. And a

special thank you to our producer Lisa MacGibbon, who has managed all themany challenges of staging this show with her trademark professionalism anda t t e n t i o n t o d e t a i l .

We hope you enjoy our production of The God of Carnage.

NAOMI COSTING (Veronica)N a o m i h a s b e e n i n v o l v e d w i t h t h e

Warrandyte Theatre company since2 0 0 8 , a n d d u r i n g t h a t t i m e s h ehas been an actor, director, stage

manager, producer, sound operator,committee member and set painter(and everything in between). She hasappeared in various WIG productionsincluding Universal Language, TheMystery at Twicknam Vicarage, Memoryof Water, Almost Maine and mostrecently in Talking Heads. Naomi hasenjoyed this production immensely,particularly the opportunity to playopposite such an amazing cast.

TONY CLAYTON (Michael)

Tony joined the WTO in 2011 and hasn'tlooked back since. In that time he has

had a variety of roles both on and off

stage at Warrandyte, most recentlyin Talking Heads and Arctic Fevers, ina d d i t i o n t o a s t i n t a t E l t h a m L i t t l e

Theatre in 2014. He has especially

SIMONE KIEFER (Anita)Simone is thrilled to be back on stageafter what seems like a long hiatus.It has been a challenge creating acharacter that is a real person, as

opposed to animals which she is fondof playing. Favourite human roles inthe past have been a clown in 39 Stepsand Tiggy in Bombshel ls . S imone

hopes you enjoy this interpretation of

^ God of Carnage and its complex lookat language and relationships. Ofcourse it's been great to work with mysweetheart David, and the talented

Adrian, Naomi and Tony.

ADRIAN RICE (Alan)Adrian is delighted to be playinga no rma l b l oke , a l be i t a s l i gh t l y

o v e r c o n fi d e n t a n d c o n c e i t e d o n e .

W i t h o u t a n y p a r t i c u l a r l y o d dmannerisms, Alan is slightly mored i f fi c u l t t o fi n d t h a n s o m e o f h i s

previous roles.Adrian has spent most of the last 10

years directing and helping administerthe WTC and choice of plays, etc. It isnow fully 10 years since his last fulltime role outside of CAPs or Follies. In

2005 he played the lead in AccidentalDeath of an Anarchist and previouslyhad full length roles in Bouncers andGulls. Adrian is enjoying being backin a longer play and working with theteam and David, who has encouragedhis cast's input as much as any director

reasonably can.

DAVID TYNAN (Director)

David has been performing, directingand producing at Warrandyte Theatre

Company since 2002, and still enjoyshimself thoroughly here. More than

that, he is committed to its continuedgrowth and health. As president of theWMI&AA and former president of the

WTO, and married to the treasurer (hissweetheart), there is no chance he willstop putting in anytime soon.

disappointment of not being able to cast the advertised show of Brief Encounter *Without David's drive to stage this show, ably assisted by Lisa MacGibbon our

producer, we may not have had a full length play this year. Thank you also to allperformers, crew, builders and painters for their hard work, and to Ken Virtuea s o u r s t a n d - i n d i r e c t o r f o r o u r fi n a l r e h e a r s a l s .

Secondly, it is becoming the case that staging shows with all it entails is fallingto a decreasing number of willing people. We will be commencing a recruitmentdrive in 2016 but if you are inclined to see continued live theatre in Warrandyteand would like to have your say into what we do then drop us a line/give usa call. We'd love to hear from you. Besides the performers on stage thereare many other roles that enable us to function, including set building, propsand costumes, sound and lighting design and operation, producing and stage

place to start. There are roles large and small for everyone and Itis a great introduction to the stage. If you walk through the door onaudition day then we will find something for you to do! We are ofcourse also looking for non performing members to assist with themultitude of tasks that staging a show entails.

The dates are a little later in 2016. The show opens the week afterthe Warrandyte Festival on 31/3/16 and runs each Thurs, Fri andSat night until April 16th.

Tickets will go on sale in February.

Ingredients: 1 Granny Smith apple - peel and core1 pear - peel and core3-4 crumbled Gingernut biscuits (reserve half for topping]1 tsp cinnamon1 tsp ground cloves1 tsp ground nutmeg1 tsp ground ginger% cup plain flourVi cup sugar (plus a little extra for sprinkling between layers]Vi tsp salt1 tsp vanilla3 eggs1 Vi cups milk1-2 tablespoons pear brandy or rum (optional]

H e a t o v e n t o 1 8 0 C .

Grease the bottom and sides of a pie pan with butter.Mix cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger in a small bowl. Throw in about halfof the gingerbread crumbs.Peel and core the apple and pear and slice into thin wedges. Spiral layersof fruit around the bottom of the pie pan, sprinkling a little of the sugar andspice mix on top of each layer.Whisk together flour, sugar and salt in a bowl.Crack eggs into another bowl. Beat them with a fork until smooth. Add vanillaand milk. Beat together until smooth. (If you feel so inclined, add some pearbrandy or rum.)Pour wet ingredients into flour mixture. If there's any spices/crumbs left inthe first bowl, toss them in as well. Whisk it all together until smooth and notlumpy.Pour batter over the fruit in the pan. The fruit will float a little as the battersettles down between the slices, so if you want to maintain the pretty pattern,pour slowly.Sprinkle the top with the reserved half of the gingerbread crumbs.Bake in oven at 1800 for 45 minutes, or until the batter has risen and is a nicegolden brown colour, and the cake is only a little jiggly.Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10-15 minutes. Best served warm.
