It’s Panto time! (Oh no it isn’t! Oh yes it is!)

A whole school trip to the panto inspired some brilliant writing ...

On Wednesday 14th December, St Kentigern’s went to the pantomime to see Jack and the Beanstalk. We started walking to the tower, all besides ourselves with excitement! As the show started we settled down and Jack, Jack’s Mum and the dancers entered the stage to incredible amounts of applause and laughter. They danced extremely well and very confidently. On the 28th of October, Year 6 had a fun time celebrating the Mexican Day of the Dead. The Day of the Dead is a celebration that people in Mexico have instead of Halloween. On this day they remember their loved ones who have died, to do this they dress up and they make sugar skulls (a piece of candy that looks like a skull.) Year 6 did this because it was the last day of their topic, ‘Mexico’. Some people dressed up as normal Mexicans, but it was just as fun. During their topic they also made fajitas. Lorenzo said, “They are just so amazing I can’t describe the taste.” The class had to do a dance, it was called

Isabel and Dominic making fajitas.

the Mexican Hat Dance. They joined in with a little tap dance; next they had to walk around in a little circle; after doing this a few times they did get into a big circle. At the end they threw their hats in the air.

The Mexican Hat Dance Jessica S said, “I liked the circle at the end of the dance.” Nesta said, “I like how the dance looked with all the different colours.” The children all had a lot of fun, especially during the Mexican Hat Dance. It was a great topic to start off their final year in primary school.

Harvest time! On Friday 7th October St Kentigern’s held a Harvest Festival inside their church. They did this to help charities that give food to the hungry. The whole school gathered together in the church to sing hymns and pray. All the classes had some reflective prayers to say and they all came up to the Altar in church. Lots of food was brought into school and given to the charities. The type of food they brought was tin cans, pasta, biscuits, bananas, Kit Kats and other Fairtrade food.

The Year 4s retold the story about Kevin who struggled to plant food. His mother was poor and died and he never met his farther who had died so he lived with his grandmother. The Year 1s did the creation story and the Year 2s sang along with the music. The Reception children did a scarecrow song where some children dressed up like cows, chickens and scarecrows. The Year 5s and Year 6s did bidding prayers. Rosie said, “It was a great success and everyone enjoyed singing along.” Allyza said, ”It was fun because we got to sing hymns and we got to give food to worthy causes like Vincent house, Street Life and The Foodbank.” By Ann Mary and Riya (Y4) Reception performing Dingle Dangle Scarecrow

Year 1 singing The Creation Story

On Thursday 6th November National Poetry Day took place. National Poetry Day was amazing. All the classes took part in an assembly and shared what they learned about in their class. In Year 6 Nesta and Rosie did a space poem. Rosie felt nervous but when she started off she felt good. Nesta felt proud as she stood up in front of the whole school and spoke loudly. Year 5’s poem was all about roller-coasters. Everybody felt proud when they performed it as though they were on a roller-coaster. Abigail (Y5) said, “It was fun performing the roller-coaster poem.” Year 4’s poem was about potions. Avery felt scared and nervous as she recited the poem. Nico said, “I felt glad that we got to perform in front of the whole school!” Year 3 did a song poem and used instruments. They enjoyed playing the instruments dancing to the tune. It was a fantastic poem based on the song called ‘The ning nang nong’. Julia said, “It was quite silly but I thought it was a fantastic

opportunity to take part on this wonderful day!” Year 2 performed ‘Hurt no living thing’ which they’d learnt during their topic on mini beasts. Year 1 performed a rhyming, animal themed poem called ‘Walking round the zoo’. Loads of the children said they were happy whilst doing their funny poem, especially when they got to do the actions. Reception did a cute poem on animals based on bats, making their own version of Twinkle Twinkle little star. Everybody had a good time doing a fantastic poem and having lots and lots of fun.

Drinks, cakes, crisps, sweets and hotdogs were on sale. There was also a chocolate fountain and you could dip a marshmallow in it! At the end of the Spooky Disco lots more he lpers he lped t idy away the decorations. The night would not have been so successful without everyone’s help! The night raised an amazing £1026.17! Mrs Wygladala thought it was a great success and would like to thank all involved. By Molly and Oliwia (Y4)

On Friday 28th October, St Kentigern’s had their annual Spooky Disco in the school hall organised by the PTFA. The Spooky Disco was crowded with lots of people wearing spooky costumes. It was great fun for everyone. There was music and it was very noisy and tight on the dance floor. There was lots of spooooooky music and videos shown on the big screen. Year 2 helped to organise the event and lots of Year 2 parents helped on the night. There were competitions including best outfits for parents and children, best pumpkin and best dancer. “The costumes were cool, scary and frightening! You could tell people had gone to a lot of effort!”

Spooky disco!

Recently Year 2 and Year 6 learnt about how to be safe around fire. Firefighters visited St Kentigern’s to discuss fire safety. Finley (Y6) said, “It was a fun experience meeting the firemen and listening to their advice and facts around fire.” Following the visit, Ryan (Year 2) wrote about the advice on how to be safe when a fire is happening:

1. When you hear the fire alarm, get out of bed straight away and go to your parents’ bedroom. Remember to check the door. If it is hot, don’t go out. 2. If there is smoke you will need to crouch down along the corridor. 3. Shout, “Fire!” 4. When you are all together you get out. 5. When you are outside ring 999 and ask for the fire service. Remember: Try not to breathe in the smoke and don’t go back into the house! Fire is really dangerous so that is why we should never mess with it. By Allyza and Abigail (Y5)

Year of Mercy Pilgrimage By Finley (Y6)

On Tuesday 18th October Year 6 went on a pilgrimage in Lancaster. The reason for Year 6’s trip was because of the Year of Mercy. It began on December 8th 2015 when Pope Francis opened the holy doors, and it finished on Sunday 20th November 2016. Pope Francis explained, “The Year of Mercy is the time to allow our hearts to be touched.” The Year 6s from 68 out of 70 Catholic schools in the Lancaster Diocese all joined together to reflect on God’s mercy. The children all met at Lancaster Castle in the court yard then they went into the court room where their tour guide was talking about the history of Lancaster. After the court room, they went straight out through the gates and began the pilgrimage. St Kentigern’s led the rest of the schools for the first part of the pilgrimage until the children reached their first checkpoint which was on front of Lancaster museum. Then they sang ‘As I kneel before you’.

Once Year 6 finished they went to the gardens in front of the town hall to sing. After that they went in to the town hall to eat and practise ‘Kyrie Kyrie Eleison’. After that they swiftly made their way to the cathedral where they entered the holy doors. Once there, they prayed and each school had a prayer to say out loud. Then they made their way back onto the school buses. Nesta (Y6) stated, “The Pilgrimage gave me a prayerful mind to think about our faith and how close we are to God.”

The rain did not stop the children from enjoying their day.

St Kentigern’s enjoyed a visit from Spellbinder on Wednesday 19th October. Spellbinder visits every year and tells the children interesting stories from around the world. Some are really fun and make you laugh out loud while other stories make some people cry because they are so sad.

In the juniors they heard all about the navy in one story. During it, they all had to get up and sing and dance to the song ‘In the navy!’ The children loved it. Also, in another song they pretended to be famous movie stars. One of the stories was about a man who was in the navy and he saved people but he died while saving others. Jessica S (Y6) said, “It was upsetting and made us think in parts and great fun in others!” Rosie (Y6) said, “I really like Spellbinder and I’m sad that it was the last time we will watch it at St Kentigern’s.” By Grace (Y5)

Football Change for life

On Wednesday 19th October, 2 Year 3s and 8 Year 4s went to a Mini Basketball Tournament at Blackpool Sixth Form. There were 12 coaches and they taught at 12 different stations. Once everyone had had a go at each station they split every school into 2 small groups. Courtney felt nervous before the match because she had never played a basketball match before, but she was very excited. Avery felt excited and nervous because she was worried that she might get hit by the ball in the face, but was looking forward to playing her first basketball match. The first group of St Kent’s children played St John Vianney’s. St Kentigern’s scored twice. The second group played against Marton. Marton failed to score but St Kentigern’s scored 4 in Marton’s net. Stacie scored 1 point, Mateusz scored 2, then Shayne scored the final point in that game. In the match Marton vs St John Vianney’s, Marton scored 2 and St John Vianney’s scored 1.

Mini basketball success!

Everyone was so happy that they were winning in front of Marton and St John Vianney’s! Shayne felt thrilled with joy because he scored a point during his match. He explained, “I had a brilliant time playing basketball! I also loved watching all the other teams in their matches.” St Kentigern’s won in their group! They scored 15 points all together. Mr Hogarth took the team to the tournament. He said, “I was really proud of all the children. They worked really hard, showed great team work and determination.”

By Avery and Courtney (Y4)

On Thursday 6th October 2016 there was a football match between St Kentigern’s and Devonshire School. The match was held at Devonshire School. The players were Oliver, Luke, Blayney, Lewis, Bradley, Caine, Shayne and Nicholas. Nicholas, the goal keeper, had trouble saving some goals because the nets at the school were small and he couldn’t slide on the floor to get the ball (like he normally does) because they played on a MUPA. He still played really well. Caine passed the ball over long distances throughout the match and tackled the opponents well. Lewis had an attempt on goal but the keeper saved it.

The boys had a very good time playing against their opponents but lost 4-0. St Kent’s played fairly and didn’t complain that they lost. Caine from Year 5 said, “I was sad that we lost but I feel happy for Devonshire winning because they deserved it.” Nicholas from Year 5 said, “I felt disappointed that we lost 4-0 but that’s ok because we can win next time.” Mr Scudder (the sports coach) looked very proud of them, even though they didn’t win. Mr Hogarth was very impressed with their teamwork.
