His history

He was born on 17 January 1706 and died on 17 April 1790.

He was born on Milk Street in Boston, Massachusetts.

He was married to Deborah Read.

He was a Polymath, diplomat, leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, musician, inventor, satirist, civic activist, statesman.

He was also the 6th President of Pennsylvania.

His contributions

In 1743, Benjamin Franklin founded the American Philosophical society to help scientific men discuss their discoveries and theories. This was the beginning of his electrical research.

He proposed that “vitreous” and “resinous’’ electricity were not different types of electric fluid (as electricity was called back then), but the same electrical fluid under different pressures.

He was also the first to label them as positive and negative respectively, and he the first to discover the principle of conservation of charge (In physics, charge conservation is the principal that electrical charge can neither be destroyed nor created).

His kite experiment

In the early 1750s, Franklin erected a lightning rod on top of his house for the purposes of experimentation, protection and, perhaps, to get electricity for experimentation without having to go through the laborious process of creating it himself via a primitive battery.

Franklin's "iron rod" drew lightning down into his house. The rod was connected to a bell and a second bell was connected to a grounded wire.

Every time there was an electrical storm, the bells would ring and sparks would illuminate his house.

Fun Fact : it was said that Franklin's wife, Deborah, was so flustered by the ringing bells and flashing lights, that she wrote to her husband who was off in London, asking him how to disconnect the experiment.

His kite experiment

Franklin's work became the basis for the single fluid theory.

When something is being charged, such as a car battery, electricity flows from a positive body, that with an excess charge, to a negative body, that with negative charge.

In Philadelphia, 1752, on a June afternoon, the 46 year-old Ben Franklin decided to fly a kite.

With his son, William, assisting him, they attached his kite to a silk string, tying an iron key at the other end.

Then, they tied a thin metal wire from the key and inserted the wire into a Leyden jar, a container for storing an electrical charge.

Finally, as the sky darkened and a thunderstorm approached, they attached a silk ribbon to the key.

Holding onto the kite by the silk ribbon, Franklin flew the kite and once it was aloft, he retreated into a barn so that he would not get wet.

His kite experiment

The thunder storm cloud passed over Franklin's kite, whereupon the negative charges in the cloud passed onto his kite, down the wet silk string, to the key, and into the jar.

Ben however, was unaffected by the negative charges because he was holding the dry silk ribbon, insulating him from the charges on the key.

When he moved his free hand near the iron key, he received a shock. Why?

His kite experiment

Because the negative charges in the key were so strongly attracted to the positive charges in his body, a spark jumped from the key to his hand.

Franklin's experiment successfully showed that lightning was static electricity.

You can experience this same reaction when you shuffle your feet on a carpet and reach for a metal doorknob.

Inspiration from Franklin

We realized that perseverance, is very vital, because without it, we would not be able to finish anything.

We understood from one of his quotes, “ Well done is better than well said”, that taking action is more important than just talking about it.

This project has made us more appreciative of electricity and the scientists who have contributed to it. As without it, we would not be able to operate anything, no charging handphones, watching television or playing computer.

Also, we have learnt more about electricity and about how lightning is of negative charge.

Reflection

Our group has faced problems with meeting up, as it’s holiday and many of us have things to do.

We felt that is project is very meaningful as we have learnt a lot from it. Not just academic wise, but we also learnt moral values

We also realized that to finish this project, we do not necessarily have to meet up and do, we could divide up the work.

This project has also made our friendship bonds to grow stronger.
