From the director’s desk: By the time this newsletter reaches you, the Arts Center will be re-opened after almost a year of renovation – and what a project! During this process, MANY individuals, businesses, volunteers and students have donated funds and time to make this dream a reality. Their contributions reflect the broad spectrum of ages impacted by the Arts Center. In other parts of the country, arts are struggling, as are communities, however, in Jamestown, the arts are flourishing. And the Arts Center is the community resource that makes it all happen. Although that may seem like a grand statement, it is true. The building is the hub of arts education from Kindergarten through older adults and the best location to view art from local artists to national exhibitions, not to mention watch community theatre and performing arts. Whether you appreciate art as something soothing, beautiful, and refreshing or prefer art that is challenging, disturbing and questionable, it can awaken your senses. The arts are a powerful vehicle for communication; a way to express visions that are beyond the capacity of words and are strengthened in this community because the Arts Center exists. What began as a vision to showcase the arts and make a visual statement downtown, is becoming a reality. The first two phases of this vision have been accomplished….the Hansen Arts Studio and the renovated Arts Center. The next phases are development of the Arts Park and expansion of the Endowment Fund. This latter is essential in order to maintain these impressive and expanded spaces allowing the arts to thrive and the community to expand. Thank you all for making this happen.

The Arts Center’s Opening exhibit: Capture the Coteau

This exhibit features artwork that speaks in some way to the Coteau region. Not necessarily landscpaes, the artwork might speak of the Coteau’s indigenous peoples, the changing scenery over time or environmental issues, etc.

The coteau and prairies of North Dakota have a way of speaking to those who listen, and artists are good listeners. The artwork included, whether painting, print, photograph or prose, speaks to the region–either figuratively or symbolically. Through the eyes of artists, the exhibit provides a meaningful look at the region the Arts Center community calls home.

The exhibit will evolve thru the end of July with selected artists being highlighted in a series of mini-exhibits within the larger installation. Members of the community may bring in small contributions to add to the exhibit. These personal mementoes of the Coteau can be dropped off during May or June and will be returned at the end of the show.

The primary artists include, Heidi Goldberg, Jessica Christy, Terry Jelsing, Molly McLain, Sabrina Hornung, Anna Meidinger, Deane Fay, Sherry Short, and Jon Offutt. These artists have multiple pieces on display. Additional artists are represented by one or two pieces and this will change and evolve throughout the exhibit period.
