I hope everyone had a relaxing and rejuvenating three week break, I know I certainly did. I would like to start by thanking the College community for a very productive first semester, it certainly did have its challenges, but a great deal of productive work was completed and the continued improvement of the education offered was maintained. As we start Semester 2 I would like to keep the College community informed of changes which we have planned for 2020. As many of you are aware, two of our leadership team will be leaving the College at the end of this year, both of whom will be taking on new challenges in new schools. Mr Matthew Oakes, Acting Head of Middle School, has accepted a position as a Boarding Housemaster at Rockhampton Grammar School and Mr Leighton Corr, Head of Senior School, has accepted the position as Head of Secondary School 7 – 12 at Penrith Anglican College. These appointments reflect the quality of these two young leaders and Arndell Anglican Collegeis quickly gaining a reputation of developing the next set of Christian leaders.  On behalf of thewhole College community I congratulate these two fine men and wish them all the best in theirnew adventures.  Both have made a significant contribution to the life of this College and bothwill be sorely missed. With their departures and that of Mr James Webb (Deputy Headmaster)the College Council has endorsed the implementation of a new leadership structure for 2020. The roles of Head of Middle School and Head of Senior School will be restructured and two newroles have been created. At the start of 2020 we will have two Deputy Headmaster’s; one will be Deputy HeadmasterOperations P – 12 and the other will be Deputy Headmaster Head of Secondary School 7 – 12.  Iam pleased to announce to the College community that we have been able to appoint twohighly respected Christian educational leaders to these two important positions.  Mr Austin Robinson (currently Acting Deputy Headmaster) has accepted the role of DeputyHeadmaster Operations P – 12 and Rev. Alex Koch has accepted the role as Deputy HeadmasterHead of Secondary School 7 – 12.  Austin is well known to the College community, he has servedthis College for over sixteen years in a variety of positions and the combination of establishedrelationships and institutional knowledge will be a real asset in this role.  Alex is currently an active part of the Executive team at St Catherine’s School Waverley,Australia’s oldest Anglican Girl’s School. Alex has served that school as Chaplain for the pastnine years, is an active and qualified maths teacher and regularly works with the School Councilin developing the strategic direction of the School. Prior to working at St Catherine’s Alex servedat St Andrew’s Cathedral School and Shore School in a variety of roles.  Academically Alex holdsan undergraduate degree in science and education from the University of NSW, a Bachelor ofDivinity from Moore College and is currently completing a Masters of Educational Leadershipalso at the University of NSW. Alex has also represented the state in rowing and is an activerunner, having completed several marathons. We look forward to having Alex as part of ourteam in 2020 and I have no doubt our community will welcome him warmly to the Hawkesbury. Arndell Anglican College remains a dynamic institution and I feel blessed to be involved in thework of this community.  I look forward to keeping the community informed of furtherdevelopments as the semester unfolds.

Remembering the Poor Galatians 2:10Their only suggestion was that we keep on helping the poor, which I have always been eager to do. This year I’ve had the joy of teaching a Year 9 maths class. Currently we are working our waythrough earning money and in particular taxation. As we started our lessons students showedgreat interest in understanding how tax is calculated and why we should pay tax. A number ofcourse know our attitude to tax, we all want to reduce it, so why should we pay it in the firstcase? It is at these moments I’m thankful for the teaching of the Bible to remember the poor. Often thepoor do not deserve the position in which they find themselves. The concern of Christians hasalways been to ensure the poor are cared for and treated as the humans they are. The passageabove was given as an encouragement to the early church. It’s a good thing that governmentshave picked up this idea and seen the value of providing welfare for those in need. So, payingtaxes is actually a good thing for our society. Unfortunately, it is not enough. Many struggle to survive on these low payments and so we still have charities who fill those gaps. Thankfully at Arndell we support a number of charities. In particular, it was encouraging to see last term that our Secondary School donated 64 bags of non-perishable food to the Anglicare Take Love campaign. These donations show a deeper concern to give without expecting anything in return. May God use this food to help those in such desperate need to know that they are loved and ultimately loved by him through his son. If you have any questions about the Christian faith or chaplaincy at the College, please contactthe Chaplaincy team.

HICES DEBATING UPDATE & 2019 INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

For the fourth time in as many years, at least one Arndell debating team has progressed to atleast the semi-final stage of the state wide HICES debating competition. This is in itself, a hugecompliment to the consistent quality of our Arndell teams. The Senior Team (Year 10) of Evangeline Claxton, Caleb Clark, Maylee Neary and Ben Webbwere unlucky to lose their preliminary final against Newcastle Grammar School. The Open Team of Gemma Thompson, Noah Shean, Jake James and William Bell haveextended their unbeaten run this year, with their last win over a strong George’s RiverGrammar team setting up a NSW semi-final against Macarthur Anglican. This debate is likely totake place on Wednesday, 21st August, with the winner proceeding through to the Grand Finalon Friday, 6th September to be hosted by the University of Technology, Sydney. Good luck tothe Open Team on adding the prestigious Chapman Cup Open Division title to the Senior titlewon in 2017. The best individual speakers in HICES Debating from the preliminary rounds for our NorthWestern Sydney region have been announced.  Impressively 12 Arndell students have receivedindividual recognition. HICES certificates will be presented later this term at assembly to the following students: Junior Division (Years 5 & 6)Rory Klingstrom - 7thIvy Constantine - 11th Middle Division (Years 7 & 8)Rachel Nanthakumaran & Elliot Sullivan - 3rd equalAndrew Smith & Abby Peters - 5th equalAnne Bellamy 10th Senior divisionOliver Baldwin-Marshall & Caleb Clark – 1st equalMaylee Neary 6thCassandra Steenbeeke 11th Open DivisionJake James – 1st (across all regions)Noah Shean – 2nd

On the last day of term two, the overwhelming majority of Year 11 and a dozen keen Year 12students who wished to do so, attended the Western Sydney Careers Expo at Homebush. The Expo is a massive event, with hundreds of exhibitors including NSW TAFE, the majority ofAustralian and a number of international universities, the University Admissions Centre, theDefence Forces, NSW Government Departments including NSW Teach, private academiesoffering courses in the arts (including music and IT) and business groups including real estate. The Expo attracts an ever increasing number of many thousands of students from a huge cross-section of schools. There is a great value simply in Arndell students having the opportunity tosee and meet many students undertaking Higher School Certificate studies. Upon arrival at theExpo, students were free to wander around inside The Dome seeking out exhibitors or courses ofinterest to them. The Expo also offers seminar programmes. The Year 11 and 12 Arndell students were again, outstanding ambassadors for the College. Theywere highly responsible, taking advantage of the opportunity to clarify their future options.Quite a few returned weighed down with “show bags” of information. The feedback from thosestudents who went was overwhelmingly positive. My thanks to Mrs Arnold and Mr Oakes for their excellent company and support on the day.

NEW CALEDONIA TRIP

During the July school holidays, 16 French elective students and four teachers spent five daysin New Caledonia. We had a fantastic time and were blessed with perfect weather. Thestudents participated in three intensive French language lessons to work on their spoken andwritten skills, they cooked an awesome lemon meringue tart with a French chef, exploredNouméa on the Tchou Tchou train and visited Nouméa’s gorgeous Parc Forestier and theaquarium. One of the many highlights was the day trip to Amédée Island where the studentswere treated to a fun day of snorkelling, paddle boarding, traditional dance, live music and adelicious buffet lunch! The students behaved beautifully and were a delight to travel with!
