THE ARNDELL ADVOCATE NEWSLETTER 2016 118 - 124 WOLESELY ROAD OAKVILLE NSW PH: 02 4572 3633
‘Learning through Christ’ www.arndell.nsw.edu.au
From the Headmaster Mr Gareth Leechman
The College has settled extremely well into Term 3 2016 and we have a busy term ahead of us.
Preparations for 2017 are well under way and as a result of further enrolment growth the College
Council has decided to create two new leadership positions for 2017. The first is the role of a stand-
alone Deputy Headmaster and I am pleased to announce that Mr James Webb has been appointed
to this important role. James is well known to the community having served it as Deputy
Headmaster/Head of Senior School for the past 25 years, but by splitting the role we will be able
to ensure the ‘personal touch’ we offer is maintained into the future. As a result we have
commenced the process of advertising for a new Head of Senior School who will commence at the
start of 2017.
The second role is that of Head of Visual Arts. As the College grows it has been become more
challenging to adequately meet the demands being placed on the CAPA Department and maintain
the level of excellence we are pursuing. As of next year Mr Chris Wilson will now have oversight
of the Music, Drama and Dance programs in the newly named role of Head of Performing Arts. I
would like to thank Chris and his team for their work as a CAPA Department and this decision to
appoint a new Head of Visual Arts largely came through discussions generated by Chris. This is
an exciting development and we have commenced the process of recruiting and will keep you
informed when decisions have been made.
Finally, in our most current strategic plan, we are focusing on developing a learning and teaching
framework which will underpin the pedagogical practice that occurs within this College. The
framework’s development has been guided under the leadership of Mrs Karen Merrick and we
have now reached the stage of creating the framework itself.
Development of the framework will involve 22 of our staff going off campus for two days (Thursday
11th and Friday 12th August). Disruption to classes has been kept to a minimum and learning will
occur as normal. I am really excited about the work of this committee as I believe it will add
significant value to the education that we are offering here at Arndell Anglican College.

Philippians 1:27
‘Live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.’
In the last week we’ve seen the beginning of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. I always love the Olympics, a time to come
together as a world and watch athletes perform amazing deeds. As a Christian I am always in wonder at how God creates
each human uniquely to perform at such a high standard.
In Chapel this last week we’ve been exploring some famous Christian Olympians. The first was
Eric Liddell, a man who gave everything to serving God. Eric, also known as ‘The Flying
Scotsman’, famously chose to change away from his favourite event, the 100m, to compete in the
200m and 400m at the 1924 Olympics in France. His reason for changing, he was convicted that
he should not compete on a Sunday, a day of rest, which is when the heats for the 100m were
on. The movie, Chariots of Fire is based on this story.
Eric competed in the 200m and 400m, winning Bronze in the 200m and Gold in the 400m.
However, for Eric the story doesn’t end there. After the Olympics he gave up on running to become
a missionary in China. To him, serving God meant going to another country and sharing the
wonderful news about Jesus. During his time in China a war started and most British nationals
left the country. Eric sent his wife and children home but remained himself to keep serving and
telling people about Jesus.
Eric ended his life in an internment camp where he continued to serve wholeheartedly despite
failing health. He died in 1945 at the age of 43. One report of his last words were, "It's complete surrender", in reference to
how he had given his life to God.
As I consider Eric and his life I think he lives out the call of Philippians 1:27 for the Christian. He lived his life in a manner
worthy of the Gospel of Christ right to the very end.
May we, at this time of celebration of athletic ability, consider who we live for and what sort of life we will live.
If you wish to chat about the Christian faith or ask general questions about chaplaincy, please contact the Chaplaincy Team at
the College.

Tasting the relief on the tip of my damp tongue relief surrounds me as I am released into freedom. Bursting out of me like a flower, a spray of water covers me as I sing at the top of my lungs. Along the water other whales begin to sing with happiness as we roam across the glistening ocean. Smiling, the boy with the generous father waves goodbye to my family and I as we swim away from danger. Across the beach crowds of people watch us return home as we sing goodbye to our fellow helpers.
Charging towards freedom like a raging bull nothing can stop me as I swim beside hope. Pure determination quickly pulls me closer to safety as the beach turns into a speck of dust. Joyfully calling to happiness I point my fin towards home. Gazing into the distance I see where I belong, away from danger and fright. Eagerly jumping in and out of the water I am covered in joy as we have made it home. Relief swirls in my stomach like a storm as I look back at the help given to me by caring people. Dancing above us in the sky birds whistle a beautiful tune to us. Covering the ocean, whales with smiles as bright as the sun excitedly welcome each other back home. Peaceful sounds of freedom flood through my body as we have defeated horror and fright of death. Gliding across the open water I remember the generosity of the people on the beach and the comfort they gave me. Knowing I am where I am meant to be I gaze back at the speck of dust. I am free!
