TB DAY EVENT

If you are taking TB medicine on your own, without DOT, it's important to get into a routine. Here are some ways to help you remember to take your TB medicine:

Take your medicine at the same time every day. For ex-ample, you can take it before breakfast, or after you brush your teeth.

Ask someone in your family or a friend to remind you to take your medicine.

Each day when you take your medicine mark it off on a calendar.

Get a weekly pill dispenser that has a section for each day of the week. Put your pills in it.

Ask your healthcare provider what you should do if you forget to take your pills

If you have TB disease, it will take a few weeks of treat-ment before you can't spread TB bacteria to others. Until your healthcare provider tells you to go back to your daily routine, here are ways to protect yourself and others near you:

Take your medicine exactly as the healthcare provider directed.

When you cough, sneeze or laugh, cover your mouth with a tissue. Put the tissue in a closed bag and throw it away.

Do not go to work or school until your healthcare provid-er says it's OK to go back. Avoid close contact with anyone. Sleep in a bedroom alone.

Don't Spread Your TB

You will need regular checkups to make sure your treatment is working.

You must finish your medicine and take the drugs exactly as prescribed. If you stop taking the drugs too soon you can become sick again. If you do not take the drugs cor-rectly, the TB germs that are still alive can become re-sistant to the drugs.

Sometimes the drugs used to treat TB can cause side ef-fects. If you are taking medicine for preventive therapy or for active TB disease let your doctor know if you begin having any unusual symptoms. Side effects of TB drugs can include:

no appetite nausea vomiting yellowish skin or eyes fever for 3 or more days abdominal pain tingling fingers or toes skin rash easy bleeding aching joints dizziness tingling or numbness around the mouth easy bruising blurred or changed vision ringing in the ears hearing loss

A healthcare worker may make sure you are taking your medicine correctly. This is called Directly Observed Thera-py (DOT).

On the 23/03/2012 our institution celebrated TB

day. The programme was driven by Sr. Ntombela who emphasized that TB is a curable disease and the importance of adhering to treatment.

Topics discussed were as follows:

Signs and symptoms of Tuberculosis.

Sputa and treatment

TB and HIV

The vote of thanks was done by Mr. Mncwabe. Pamphlets were distributed and refreshment were offered to all.

NUTRITION PROGRAMME AT POPD COMPLIMENTARY FOOD

On the 19 of October 2012 POPD celebrated the Nutrition Programme. We had various speakers from different departments who shared information

such as: Importance of Vitamin A,

Importance of Hand washing, etc.

Mrs. V Pillay (Specialist Nutritionist) elaborated on complimentary food that children should consume

Complimentary foods are needed to add nutri-ents for the growing child.

Complimentary feeding means giving other foods in addition to beast milk.

Good nutrition means eating enough food. It also means eating different foods. Bread and porridge are good foods but they are not enough on their own. A young child need an extra energy foods, also add fruit, vegetables beans, and meat.

A young child is small, she /he cannot eat a lot of food at one time. Feed your child small meals at least five times a day.

BREASTFEEDING AWARENESS EVENT IN ANC

Holding your baby across your lap, using the opposite arm to the breast

Holding your baby across your lap, supporting him with the same arm

Holding your baby underarm

Holding your babies in any combination, if you have twins and want to

feed them together

Good positions for breastfeeding

You may find it easier to use the same hand for both breasts while you are learning how to breastfeed. This means that you will need to hold your baby across your lap to feed on one breast. Then to feed from the other breast, you'll need to hold your baby under your arm. That way you can hold him with the same arm and hand for both breasts. If you find a position that works for you and your baby, then it is fine to stick with it. But as your baby gets older and you become more practised, you will probably want to change positions. Much will depend on where you are and what you are doing. If you have mastitis or blocked ducts your breastfeeding counsellor or midwife may advise you to hold your baby in a different position. This may be good advice, but if it works for you, it will be because you are able to help your baby get a better mouthful of breast. It will not be because changing positions causes your baby to drain a different section of your breast. All sections are equally well drained if your baby is latched on well, whatever position you use

On the 08 August 2012 the Ante- Natal Clinic hosted the breastfeeding day programme. Sr. Roanne from ANC department was the programme director for the day. Prayer and welcoming was done by Mr. Phewa and Sr.Ngcece (Operational Manager of the Department.

Topics discussed :

Demonstration of Breast feeding by Sr. Mazibuko

Lying down with your bodies parallel

Advance and Midwife speech

PN Shabangu started by identifying the pros’ and cons on breastfeeding and he also elaborated on the correct ways that mothers should adopt when breastfeeding. Vote of thanks was done by Matron Govender.

ANC department would like to thank all people that supported/ participated in their programme making it a success and also thanked all Mothers that were part of this programme.
