The 2014 new school year has begun and I would like to extend a very warm welcome back to all our students and especially our year 7 students who begin their six year association with our school. I hope that this will be a positive beginning to your secondary schooling and to the special relationships that you will forge with your teachers and your peers. We have also enrolled a large number of new students across all year levels and we welcome them aboard and hope that they very quickly settle into our learning community. Our student numbers have grown significantly again and we have 945 students across the school with 192 year 7 students.

I would also like to welcome the new teachers who have joined us this year and information relating to their roles is detailed in this newsletter. I want to commend last year’s year 12 students who received their results and their tertiary offers during the holidays. The out-comes were very pleasing and reflected positively on the efforts and commitment of both the students and staff during 2013. I am very proud to announce that we had 4 students receiving scores above 90 and all but one student received a first round offer. Most of our VCAL students have taken up either further training at TAFE, apprenticeships or employment. I wish our current year 12 stu-dents all the best and hope they will also achieve their goals and aspirations. Over the holiday break many changes and improvements were made to provide students and staff with a positive working and learning environment. New Portables One new science portable and two general purpose classroom portables have been installed. These are spacious facilities with air conditioning and data projectors. Classroom improvements. New carpet has been laid in the year 7 and 8 units and this has made a significant improvement to the environment. The walls have also been painted. The intention is to have the same work completed in middle and senior areas by the end of the year. CHEWING GUM IS NOW TOTALLY BANNED and we will need to be very vigilant with this so as to protect the new carpet. More outdoor table settings have been installed around the school for students. These are very popular and have a settling effect on the atmosphere at recess and lunchtime. More of this seating will be installed throughout the year. Lunchtime Gym Club has been introduced which along with the computer club and book club provides students with engaging ac-tivities to keep them busy at lunchtimes. Application forms must be completed and submitted for entry into most activities. High Expectations, Commitment and Perseverance The year ahead is full of promise and productivity for all. There are many rich opportunities for students to engage with learning, challenge and extend themselves and develop both the academic and personal qualities that will make them successful in life. How-ever, without commitment and perseverance students can fall behind and underachieve. It is everyone’s responsibility; students, parents, teachers and the school, to ensure that students keep focused and committed. We have many policies and programs in place to ensure that all students achieve their full potential. We offer Catch Up Class at lunchtime, Maths/Science and English/Humanities tutors after school at Homework Club, Mentoring and Study Group programs at year 12, to name some. Parents will receive letters and phone calls if students are not working or achieving at their expected level and meetings will take place to develop strategies to address this. This year the school is focusing on Positive Psychology and how this new research into building resilience can strengthen our teach-ing and learning at Epping Secondary College. We will keep parents informed of our progress and offer parent information sessions. I wish everyone a productive, positive and healthy year ahead.

At Epping Secondary College we are delighted with the growing number of students at the college. As the numbers have increased substantially we have implemented some new procedures. If you wish to see a staff member please make an appointment first. This will ensure that staff can be prepared and a suitable time can be arranged for both parties. If students are leaving early throughout the day a parent note must be written in their diary. This will be approved in the morning by the coordinator and then students must sign out via the student attendance office. This will ensure that your child/ren will be ready for collection without delay. We thank you for your cooperation with helping our college run more efficiently.

Epping Secondary College have a dedicated and hard working team approach to the wellbeing and learning of our students. The philosophy of the team is to work with and assist each and every student in supporting and preparing them for success whilst under our care. We are acutely aware that in the time students are with us they will face many issues and problems both from within the school structure and through their home life. It is the team’s role to develop processes and procedures that allow us to work closely with the student and their parents to find the best practical solutions . In many cases the team would meet with the parent, student and appropriate teacher and put in place a stu-dent management plan. An important part of our policies and procedures are those related to student attendance, lateness, uniform and of course behavioural expecta-tions in the classroom and the school grounds. In all cases the procedures are there to ensure that our school runs as smoothly as possible and that we present a safe and enjoyable teaching and learning environment for all involved here at Epping Secondary College Please feel free in contacting any of the appropriate team members, if there is an issue we could assist your son or daughter with, in their educa-tional pathway here at Epping Secondary College. Nathan completed the two year Integrated Technologies course in 2013 and was awarded an Excellence Certificate from 370o Group. Nathan attended an awards evening on Friday 7th , February 2014, to receive his certificate for all the hard work he has put in over the last two years. Nathan’s classroom teacher for the course had these com-ments “Nathan is a well organised and independent thinking student who contributes to the classroom learning culture in a positive, team orientated manner”. Nathan is presently undertaking Year 12 Senior VCAL at Epping Secondary College. Nathan has shown an aptitude towards electrical studies for some years and was keen to commence the Electrotechnology course when he en-tered his “Pathways” program (Year 10) at Epping. Nathan would like to enter the Electrical Industry on completion of his Year 12 studies and after completing his ap-prenticeship look into expanding his knowledge and skill base to allow him to diversify within the industry and later investigate options of setting up his own business. We congratulate Nathan on his achievement and look forward to helping Nathan gain an Electrical Apprenticeship this year.

The entrance of Epping Secondary College awaited me as I looked into the next six years of my life. But I soon realised I would be-come ‘the preps’ again. The thought was daunting but I soon got over it. I walked into home group and said to myself ‘I don’t have to worry about a thing!’ We all settled into class and got to know each other. I found that most people just like me were nervous yet excited about starting a new stage in our lives. In the first two weeks of school, myself and my classmates have all gotten to know each other and I have made so many great friends already. This experience will be like no other and I’m really looking forward to be-ing able to conquer things that I have never conquered with the help of teachers at Epping Secondary. High school to me, is an oppor-tunity to be able to achieve great things in my future and I really will be ‘Learning for Life’. Amy Shanahan 7E

Hello my name is Medika and I would like to share a little something about my experience during the Amazing Race. The Amazing Race was an event that was offered to all year 7 students during Starting Out. It offered the opportunity to work with different students in teams and encouraged students to work on their problem solving skills. It also taught us teamwork, respect and co-operation. My favourite activity was the Basketball Shootout. I had lots of fun and look forward to doing it again. Medika Bonney 7C

Sometimes the dreams in your head are hard to see in reality. No matter how hard you try, you keep hitting the ground. It is mainly your honest decision to not give up that defines how strong you are. Through the thrills and whirls of VCE, I heard a story that really lifted me today and left me more motivated to stay content with what I have. On 20th February, 2014, we the VCE students heard a story of faith and courage. Every word he said seemed to reveal its purpose to us. Arthur Bolkas spoke about his experiences when he was young. His overcoming of struggles and perseverance to follow his dream really left us mesmerized and in awe. Here is a guy who understood us well, had overcome his struggles of drug abuse, had various occupations and who had followed his heart to work with people and motivate them. He incorporated humour into his story which made us laugh out loud like crazy. Real happiness is not in money, intelligence, or beauty. Real happiness is being in love with the world and the people in it. That’s what really motivated me about this man’s story. you’re A+ could be a B, C or D mark in your assignments or tests. Whatever you choose to do, follow your heart, there is nothing too hard for you. You can achieve your dreams and fly above mountains. You are special and have a unique purpose. Success is achieved by giving your personal best to the world. Jerusha Mather Social Justice Captain

The year 7 students met with their year 10

buddies on Friday, 14th February. This was a

wonderful opportunity for the year 7 stu-

dents to share their experiences and feelings

about their first few weeks at secondary

school. The year 10 students were also able

to provide some advice and support, as well

as run some fun “getting to know each oth-

er” activities. The students very quickly felt

comfortable with each other and we hope

this is the beginning of a special friendship.

What can parents and carers do to help their child’s asthma at school?

If your child is self-managing their asthma, or capable of taking their asthma medication

independently, ensure that your child is always carrying their reliever medication (e.g. Ventolin,

Asmol, Airomir and Bricanyl) as well as a spacer while at school

Ensure that you have provided your child’s school/preschool with an updated Asthma Action Plan

Ensure that your child knows how to recognise early symptoms of an asthma attack and check to

make sure they are using their reliever medication properly

Ensure your child will seek help from school/preschool staff if they experience asthma symptoms

Ensure that your child’s asthma is being well managed and that their medication and management is

reviewed annually by your GP (this is a good opportunity to also update the Asthma Action Plan

required by your child’s school/preschool)

For more information, please contact The Asthma Foundation of Victoria on 1800 278 462 or www.asthma.org.au

Respiratory experts talk to parents about asthma

Ever wondered what the experts would say about a cure for asthma?

Or how to get your teenager to take their medication?

If you want to find out the answers to some of the most frequently

asked questions about children and asthma, watch The Asthma

Foundation’s new video series – available from

They’re Back …… Dear Parents/Guardians/Carers, It has come to my attention that some students in the school may have head lice and I seek your cooperation in checking your child’s hair this week 03/03/14 to 12/03/14. Head lice do not transmit infectious diseases – they are transmitted by having head to head contact with someone who has head lice. You may be reassured to know that head lice are commonly found in places other than at Epping Secondary College. Head lice are common in school-aged children and are the most adaptable of creatures. They have survived living solely on humans for 10,000 years!!!! What can you do? I seek your cooperation in checking your child’s hair and in those instances where head lice or eggs are found, treating your child’s hair. Please see the attached pamphlet Treating and Controlling Head Lice, from the Department of Human Services. This pamphlet has informative guidelines regarding detecting and treating head lice and eggs. How do I treat my child for head lice? The attached pamphlet (as noted above) has informative guidelines regarding detecting and treating head lice and eggs. The school also has additional information available regarding treatment and controlling head lice. Please don’t hesitate to contact Regan Rizzo on, 9401 2599 to obtain this information. If head lice or eggs are found on your child’s hair you need to inform:

the school and advise when the treatment has started, via the attached Action Taken Form.

parents or carers of your child’s friends so they too have the opportunity to detect and treat their children if necessary.

When can my child return to school? Health regulations requires that where a child has head lice, that child should not return to school until the day after appropriate treatment has started. Please note, this refers only to those children who have live head lice and does not refer to head lice eggs. Epping Secondary College is aware that head lice can be a sensitive issue and is committed to maintaining your confidentiality.

Kind regards

Treating and

controlling headlice

While children are at school many families will have

contact with head lice. The information contained here

will help you treat and control head lice.

Catching head lice Head lice have been around for many thousands of years.

Anyone can get head lice.

Head lice are small, wingless, blood sucking insects.

Their colour varies from whitish-brown to reddish-brown.

Head lice only survive on humans. If isolated from the

head they die very quickly (usually within 24 hours).

People get head lice from direct hair to hair contact with

another person who has head lice. This can happen when

people play, cuddle or work closely together.

Head lice do not have wings or jumping legs so they

cannot fly or jump from head to head. They can only crawl.

Finding head lice Many lice do not cause an itch, so you have to look

carefully to find them.

Head lice are found on the hair itself and move to the scalp

to feed. They have six legs which end in a claw and they

rarely fall from the head. Louse eggs (also called nits) are

laid within 1.5 cm of the scalp and are firmly attached to

the hair. They resemble dandruff, but can’t be brushed off.

Lice can crawl and hide. The easiest and most effective

way to find them is to follow these steps:

Step 1 Comb any type of hair conditioner on to dry,

brushed (detangled) hair. This stuns the lice

and makes it difficult for them to grip the hair

or crawl around.

Step 2 Now comb sections of the hair with a fine

tooth, head lice comb.

Step 3 Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto

a paper towel or tissue.

Step 4 Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice

and eggs.

Step 5 Repeat the combing for every part of the

head at least four or five times.

If lice or eggs are found, the hair should be treated.

If the person has been treated recently and you only find

empty hatched eggs, you may not have to treat, as the

empty eggs could be from a previous episode.

Treating head lice Treating head lice involves removing lice and eggs from

the hair. There are two ways you can do this:

1. Buying and using a head lice lotion or shampoo,

following the instructions on the product

2. Using the conditioner and comb method (described

under ‘finding head lice’) every second day until there

have been no live lice found for ten days.

If you choose to use a head lice product always read and

follow the instructions provided with the product carefully.

The following points may also be helpful:

• Head lice products must be applied to all parts of the

hair and scalp.

• No treatment kills all of the eggs so treatment must involve

two applications, seven days apart. The first treatment kills

all lice; the second treatment kills the lice that may have

hatched from eggs not killed by the first treatment.

• Cover the person’s eyes while the treatment is being

applied. A towel is a good way to do this.

• If you are using a lotion, apply the product to dry hair.

• If you are using a shampoo, wet the hair, but use the

least amount of water possible.

• Apply the treatment near the scalp, using an ordinary

comb to cover the hair from root to tip. Repeat this

several times until all the hair is covered.

There is no need to treat the whole family - unless they

also have head lice.

Concentrate on the head - there is no need to clean

the house or the classroom.

Only the pillowcase requires washing - either wash

it in hot water (at least 60ºC) or dry it using a clothes

dryer on the hot or warm setting.

Trting and

Testing resistance

Head lice products belong in one of the following categories

depending on the active compound they contain:

• pyrethrins

• synthetic pyrethroids (permethrin, bioallethrin)

Head lice eggs

Head lice eggs are small (the size of a

pinhead) and oval. A live egg will ‘pop’

when squashed between fingernails.

Dead eggs have crumpled sides and hatched

egg

(nit)

• organophosphates (maldison or malathion)

• herbal with or without natural (non-chemical) pyrethrins.

Insecticide resistance is common, so you should test if

lice are dead. If they are, treat again in seven days using

the same product. If the lice are not dead, the treatment

has not worked and the lice may be resistant to the

product and all products containing the same active

compound. Wash off the product and treat as soon as

possible using a product containing a different active

compound. If the insecticide has worked, the lice will be

dead within 20 minutes.

Any head lice product could cause a reaction and should be

used with care by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding,

children less than 12 months old and people with allergies,

asthma or open wounds on the scalp. If you are unsure,

please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Head lice combs

Combs with long, rounded stainless steel teeth positioned

very close together have been shown to be the most

effective, however, any head lice comb can be used.

eggs look like tiny boiled eggs with their tops cut off.

Regulations According to the Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations

2009, children with head lice can be readmitted to school or

children’s service centres after treatment has commenced.

The department recommends a child with head lice can

be treated one evening and return to school or children’s

service centres the next day, even if there are still some

eggs present. There is no need to miss school or child

care because of head lice.

Preventing head lice

Check your child’s head regularly with comb and

conditioner. There is no research to prove that chemical

or herbal therapies can prevent head lice.

Ride to School Day Wednesday March 19th

Preparations are well under way for Active travel day/Ride 2 School Day Wednesday 19th March.

To celebrate riding, walking, skating and scooting as fun ways to travel to school, we are organising the following activities on the day: (list activities. Eg, healthy breakfast: students that use active transport eg: Ride, Skateboard, Scooter will receive a canteen voucher) We support our students to walk or wheel to school because: • Students feel fresh and alert at the beginning of a school day. • There are fewer cars around the school which eases ‘drop off congestion’. • Students are more likely to reach the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity they need each day. • Students feel happier, healthier and perform better in the classroom. Parents can join in the fun by walking or wheeling with the students as well.

SCHOOL UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS 2014

The new college uniform is one that our community can be very proud of and one that ensures that all students are equal, can be easily identified for safety reasons and represent themselves and their school in a very positive way to the wider community. School skirts and dresses must be of an appropriate length (approximately 5 – 8 cm from the knee). If the skirt or dress breaches this length it will have to be adjusted prior to returning to school the following day. Only white shirts can be worn with the winter skirts, NOT polo tops. Girls can only wear white socks or black tights with winter skirt (not black socks) Girls can only wear white socks with summer dress (no black tights). Winter Jackets There are two choices for winter jackets; a blazer or a spray jacket. It is an expectation that ONLY school jackets are to be worn and we are encouraging all parents to purchase one or the other for the colder winter months. Black Leather School Shoes All students will be expected to be wearing black leather school shoes. Any canvas shoes, runners, boots (above the ankle) or flat ballet shoes are not permitted. This is not only a school council decision but an OH&S (Occupational Health and Safety) issue that is being addressed by most schools. Compulsory School Back Pack with Logo Students must carry their school books and materials in an Epping Secondary College school logo back pack. It has also been a school rule that bags are kept in lockers and not carried around during the day. Again this is a school council decision to better support students physical health and wellbeing. Appropriate Jewellery, Makeup & Hair Jewellery, makeup and hair are expected to comply with what is appropriate to work and school environments. Minimal jewellery and makeup (in natural skin tones) is permitted. Hair should be kept tied to keep it safe and only natural hair toning is permitted. Students may have only one small visible piercing (except for earrings). Please refer to the uniform policy on the school website at http://www.eppingsc.vic.edu.au Thank you to all parents and students for your support with the implementation of the new school uniform.
