More than half of all registrations for NEBOSH examinations now come from outside of the United Kingdom, it has emerged.

Our recent registration figures revealed that over a 12 month period to the end of May 2012, 51% of examination entries came from overseas.

Figures to the end of June 2012 showed that growth in overseas registrations for our exams was continuing, with the 12 month rolling percentage rising to 54%.

“NEBOSH is a name that is recognised throughout the world now for our health, safety and environmental vocational qualifications,” said Teresa Budworth, NEBOSH Chief Executive.

“This shift in having more examination entries from overseas than from here in the UK is a landmark in our development as an organisation. We are committed to ensuring that our qualifications

meet the needs of organisations and are relevant to the risk profile and cultural needs of a worldwide audience. Simply put; we seek to help more people around the world to achieve healthy and safe working conditions.”

Teresa added: “Clearly the UK remains our most significant market overall and we remain fully committed to that. However, the potential for growth almost anywhere in the world is now being realised.

“With our network of approved course providers growing and expanding into new territories, and our move towards delivering examinations in more foreign languages, we expect to see the level of international NEBOSH students continue to rise as we move ahead.”

NEBOSH – globally recognised safety, health and environmental qualifications

In 2006, NEBOSH reached a significant milestone in its history when fire officer David Marshall became the 100,000th NEBOSH National General Certificate holder.

Six years on, with the number of NEBOSH National General Certificate successful students now exceeding 150,000, we asked David what becoming our 100,000th candidate meant to him. Typically with good humour, David played the whole thing down.

“It meant the guy who was sitting next to me, who was called Perry, wasn’t it and the bloke who was sitting the other side called Jackson wasn’t it either, but me, the one in between, I was number 100,000!”

Far more significant for David was achieving the qualification and then the help it gave him in his day to day role.

As a Station Officer in Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service in 2006, David led a team of seven officers. They carried out fire inspections of premises that fell under the various fire regulations of the time. It was Hampshire that took a lead role in the move away from fire certificates towards a more risk-based regime, which ultimately led to the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order.

David began his career as a fireman in 1990, moved in to a fire safety role six years later and became a fire inspector. He took his NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety for a very specific reason – to give him credibility in court. As a fire inspector, David would be regularly involved in the prosecution of businesses that had breached regulations.

“It gives a lot of substance to fire inspectors to have a NEBOSH National General Certificate,” explained David. “It is a very well recognised qualification, one that’s not easy to achieve. Because of this qualification, as well as my experience, my expertise has never been challenged, it has just been accepted that I am an expert witness.”

David enjoyed other benefits as a result of passing his NEBOSH National General Certificate. “Fire inspectors often take on health and safety responsibilities to ensure compliance with confined space, working at height and so on,” he added. ”So the General Certificate came in really useful there, to do the kind of dynamic and analytical risk assessments we use.”

David retired last year, then immediately 're-engaged' in the same role, but as a specialist inspecting top tier COMAH sites, particularly oil and gas. It’s no surprise then that he recently enrolled to take the NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety. He has his sights set on a possible career as a fire risk assessment and general health and safety consultant in the oil and gas industry.

We wish David every success and hope he finds his latest NEBOSH qualification just as useful as his first.

Three hundred and twenty eight NEBOSH Diploma students from all around the world came together at the end of June to celebrate their success at a graduation ceremony held at Warwick University.

Those who recently passed either their NEBOSH National, International in Occupational Health and Safety or Environmental Diploma travelled to the event from countries such as Azerbaijan, Ghana, Kuwait, Mauritius, Singapore, Nigeria, United Arab Emirates, as well as all parts of the United Kingdom.

NEBOSH Chair Sir Bill Callaghan welcomed those who attended the ceremony, including families and friends of graduates.

He told them: “We are all part of the same noble endeavour – to prevent harm and to protect people. Your work makes a difference to the lives of those in your workplace, in your communities and in the wider society. That’s what we are celebrating today, so be proud of your achievement.”

Those who gained the highest marks in NEBOSH Certificate and Diploma examinations were also presented with special awards at the graduation event.

Jamie Lewis, who works for project consultants Worley Parsons, achieved the highest mark for the NEBOSH National Diploma.

Jamie combined his studies with responsibility for health, safety and environmental (HSE) issues on a project involving the redevelopment of Iraq’s largest oil field.

“The graduation experience was fantastic, never mind the special award,” commented Jamie. “I’ve never been to a graduation ceremony before, so to be part of it, alongside my family made me feel very proud.”

Since achieving his NEBOSH Diploma Jamie has been promoted from an HSE Senior Adviser to HSE Manager at Worley Parsons.

“Credibility is important in my kind of role,” he added. “For example, it is essential that our clients have faith in our expertise and ability. Having a NEBOSH Diploma and achieving a ‘Top Candidate‘ award certainly helps in this regard.”

Our guest of honour at the event was Lawrence Waterman, head of health and safety for the Olympic Delivery Authority and now the London Legacy Development Corporation. Despite being the largest construction project in Europe, the build of the Olympic park was achieved without a single fatality. Lawrence’s contribution to health and safety was recently recognised with the award of an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Course Provider reputation ‘most important’ for students

NEBOSH students say 'reputation' is the most important factor when it comes to choosing their Course Provider.A NEBOSH survey carried out during the first half of this year among 1,600 successful Certificate level students, revealed that Course Provider reputation was far more important than course cost for example, when deciding who to study with.

Reputation was cited by 30% of students as the “most important” factor when choosing their Course Provider. Less than a quarter (22%) mentioned location, while 11% cited study method and 10% availability of dates. Only 6% mentioned cost.

“These are very interesting findings,” said NEBOSH Accreditation Manager, Matthew Powell-Howard, who led the study. “The survey clearly shows that building a strong reputation through recommendation from students, employers and other influential parties is vital.

“The study also showed that students tend to judge the performance of their Course Provider primarily by the relationship they have with their tutor."

Students said they valued tutors who “brought the subject to life” through “practical examples as well as theory”. Maintaining the same tutor was also important. Less satisfied students tended to have several different tutors. Tutors were also important for distance and e-learning students.

15 countries represented on one NEBOSH course!

It was one of those events when people from all corners of the world come together in search of a prize that could change their lives!

Now there’s nothing unusual about people from all around the world taking their International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety. NEBOSH courses are now are offered by around 500 course providers in more than 100 countries. However, on this particular course, the diversity of students was striking, as course tutor and Assistant General Manager at ETA Consultancy Wasyl Terych explained:

“The delegates for the course numbered eighteen which is a good number,” he told us. “But what really surprised me was the different geographical locations they had come from.

“Brazil, Guatemala, Japan, Nigeria, Singapore, were all represented. In fact all eighteen delegates were actually working in fifteen different countries, from all continents.”

Among those attending the course were four medical practitioners who were embarking on a change of career. Offshore occupational

health and safety work, particularly for those with medical experience can be a more lucrative career than one in medicine, and allows for more time away from work.

“NEBOSH has a fantastic name and gaining a NEBOSH qualification really opens up opportunities,” said Wasyl.

Stuart Naylor, NEBOSH International Manager added: “With the worldwide recognition NEBOSH now has I guess it shouldn’t be all that surprising to find people from all corners of the world taking their International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, just not necessarily all in the same place at the same time.”
