Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, Tomorrow the College will conduct its Spirit Assembly for the upcoming CIC and AIC Swimming Carnivals. This will be a great event and will provide excellent recognition of the hard work put in by all of the swimmers. Congratulations to Ty Collins and Ryan Chapman as Captains of AIC Swimming. Next Tuesday, 9 March , the CIC Swimming Carnival will be held whilst the AIC Carnival is on Thursday, 11 March. I am confident both squads will perform very well and again represent St Patrick’s with distinction. Next Friday will be the St Patrick’s Day Liturgy. This is always a special liturgy and I invite all parents to attend. It will begin at 8.45am in the Callan Centre. I also encourage parents and friends to book their tickets for the Shindig (St. Patrick’s Dinner Dance) which is on Saturday, 13 March, in the Callan Centre. Tickets are limited, so come along with some friends and have a great night. Tickets can be booked at the College Office or by phoning the College on 3631 9000. I hope to see many of you there. As part of ongoing Enterprise Bargaining negotiations QIEU has successfully applied for protected action for its members for the week of 8 March to 13 March. The protected action is in relation to all co-curricular activities during this time period. This action will necessitate some changes to the co-curricular program. All after school band rehearsals will be cancelled next week. All Volleyball training will continue as programmed, as will all Cricket training. QDU Debating on Wednesday night will also proceed as usual. Individual coaches may inform players of any variations. I apologise for any inconvenience and thankyou for your understanding. I have attempted to keep families informed regarding ongoing support following the events of 15 February. Another letter accompanying this edition of The Calling provides some information regarding an information session that Queensland Health is conducting. I would encourage all families to consider attending this session. It is for parents and will involve both input from professionals and an opportunity for questions and discussion. I hope to see you there. I again thank people for their ongoing support of the College and your sons. Have a great week. Frank Torrisi This week I had the opportunity of speaking at the College assembly. Part of my speech referred to some simple guidelines that are required for success in the classroom. The following points were raised: • Being prompt to class • Engaging in positive behaviour • Being prepared for classes with

Diary All equipment, books and pens

Examinations are bearing down upon us. All students should be revising work on a daily basis to ensure success. • Inter-House Chess: The first round of Inter-House Chess was held last week. All Houses were well represented. • Uniform: All students are reminded that the uniform is to be worn correctly at all times. This includes shirts tucked in, socks pulled up, top buttons done up and ties worn correctly. All students were informed at assembly this week that consequences will occur if they are not wearing the uniform correctly. This is from the moment they leave home until they return in the afternoon.

• Public Transport: St Patrick’s is a great school but it can be let down in its public image if the students are poorly behaved on public transport. The College will not tolerate poor behaviour on public transport. Students misbehaving in this area will face a range of consequences as a result of their actions. • Green and Gold Day – will be held next Friday, 12 March. Students are allowed to wear clothes to school that are predominantly green and gold. The aim of the day is to provide students with a chance to wear something different to school but also to show their pride in their school. Students can wear blue denim shorts or jeans but all other pieces of clothing must be predominantly green and/or gold. Closed shoes are compulsory and black school shoes are required for Shop classes. We also ask all students to bring a gold coin donation. • St Patrick’s Day celebrations: As part of our St Patrick’s Day celebrations next Friday, we will be holding the annual Great Morven Race. 150 boys will participate in a flying dash around the school property and past the historic Morven House in the centre of the College grounds.

• Communication – The College Diary is a significant means of communication between staff and families. Please continue to use the Student Diary on a daily basis. If you have an urgent message that needs to be communicated to your son, please contact the Student Office and at an appropriate time during the day the message will be passed on. If your son has an appointment during the day, please write a note in his diary so he can show his Group Tutor and his classroom teacher. This will ensure your son leaves class at the appropriate time to meet you at the Student Office and sign out. • Mary Mackillop College Social: Year 8 to 12 only. Friday, 12 March. 7:00pm to 10:00pm. Cost is $10. The venue is Mary Mackillop College Cultural Centre. ID is required. Appropriate clothing must be worn, including footwear. Normal school rules apply.

The draft K-10 Australian Curriculum was released online by the Federal Government this Monday, 1 March, 2010. Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is the organisation charged with developing these draft documents. It has been a two-year process leading up to the release of the proposed curriculum for the first four subject areas - Mathematics, English, Science and History. Other subjects such as Geography will follow in later years. One of the stated aims of the development of a National Curriculum was to ensure consistency of learning throughout Australia. This is especially helpful for the 80,000 students who move interstate each year. St Patrick’s College is well placed for the introduction phase of the Australian Curriculum. The draft is similar in many respects to the syllabuses currently followed in Queensland. One of the major changes proposed is a greater emphasis on Science particularly in Year 7 for 2011 and beyond. Our boys are fortunate to have access to Science laboratories and qualified personnel, and both these valuable resources will make the implementation process easier.

Parents, educators and interested community members can provide feedback. The consultation website also includes information about the development of the Australian Curriculum. It is a place where individuals and groups can comment directly on the draft curriculum content and achievement standards as they are viewing and reading them. Interested parties can have their say during the consultation process by registering at www.australiancurriculum.edu.au. The results of the feedback from schools and the broader community, the in-school activities and the forums will assist ACARA to revise and refine the draft curriculum and publish a final National Curriculum in English, Mathematics, Science and History later in the year.

I would like to begin my first Calling article of the year by extending my deepest sympathies to the Fletcher family and to all of the people who have been affected by Elliott’s death, and to thank everyone within our own College community as well as the wider community for the overwhelming support you have given each other. The thing that has so incredibly impressed me and moved me during the past few weeks has been the absolute compassion, empathy and care that has been extended by all within our community to all those who have been affected. This has been another reminder of what an incredible community we are all a part of.

On Tuesday night 40 students and 7 staff returned from our first Kairos retreat for 2010. Once again I was absolutely astounded by the power of this experience and the quality of the young men who took part. For me Kairos is always a reminder that every person is fragile, every person is beautiful and when you are able to see the real person – the person behind the mask – you see that every person is perfect. I want to thank all those involved for the honour of sharing this experience with me. Kairos is also a reminder of the inseparable bond and the unquestioned and unconditional love that exists between parent and child – a love which

is eternal - and even though our physical bodies can be taken from us at any time, no one and no thing can ever take that love from us. I would like to challenge you all this week, as we do on Kairos, to tell those you love how much they mean to you. Carpe Diem - live each and every day as if it were your last. God bless.

Mark Mewburn This Week I am hoping to get some consolidation happening in the Counselling Room. The relief counsellors have done a great job in helping spread the load. At present I am hoping to provide more consistency by seeing as many boys as I can for a period of time. Extra counsellors are available if things get too busy in my office. Disability and Grief: (Unlocking Potential in Families of Children with Special Needs) Workshop Tuesday, 20 April, at Kedron Wavell Services Club

9:30am-3pm - $154 Register at www.griefmanagement.com.au or 0414250573 Some Year 11 students might be starting to show signs of struggling with the workload, especially if they are OP eligible. Time management is the key to success but many boys have not developed the skills. I can offer a good study plan to students if they are looking for a way to improve their time management.

Events: Lots of upcoming CAREERS related events are listed on my CAREERS website in the Student Intranet – accessible from home. Careers and Employment Expo – Convention Centre - 7-9 May 9am-4pm Tertiary Studies Expo (TS Expo) – RNA Showgrounds – 17-18 July 10am-4pm

The CIC and AIC Swimming Carnivals will be held next week. Our large squad of swimmers have been working extremely hard with their seven coaches. The CIC carnival will be held at Chandler Pool on Tuesday, 9 March – please note the change to our College calendar. On Thursday, 11 March, our AIC swimmers will compete at Chandler Pool. It is important that we support our swimmers and so the Year 7 students will go and support the CIC swimmers on Tuesday and all Year 8, 10 and 12 students will support the AIC swimmers on Thursday. It is important as a community that we show our support. It should not be seen as a day off or a day to do assignment work. It is expected that all Year 7, 8, 10 and 12 students attend these carnivals. Full College uniform is required. Students will be transported by bus to Chandler Pool and will return to school by 3pm.It is recommended that students bring their own food and drinks. Our annual Shore to Gate Walkathon will

be held on the last day of Term 1 – Thursday, 1 April. It is planned to be a fun day to conclude our first term together as well with a fundraising activity. Every student has been given a sponsors/donation card and is asked to make an effort to collect money. A letter has also been handed to each student explaining more details about the day and the fundraising. I would like to see every student make a significant effort for the Shore to Gate. We will celebrate St Patrick’s Day next Friday, 12 March, with Mass in the Callan Centre. Afterwards we have our annual Great Morven Race. Runners from each of four age groups representing their Houses will race around the College grounds similar to the famous Chariots of Fire movie. Parents are invited to join us for our celebrations next Friday. The new College Website will be launched on St Patrick’s Day, 17 March. I encourage all families to check out the new website which will be more stunning

visually and will make it easier to locate important information about the College. A new inclusion will be a link to the Parent Lounge which will allow parents to access a range of information regarding your son. This will cover information in areas such as personal details, attendance records, assessment tasks, results and medical information. It will provide parents with immediate access to information that will assist in working with your son and his teachers to provide better outcomes. The Parent Lounge will also provide a link to areas such as a new Parent Teacher Interview booking form which will be used for the Term 2 Parent Teacher Evening. A letter will be sent home to each family next week outlining more details and providing an individual password to access the new Parent Lounge.

Metropolitan North Sport News AFL and Rugby League Postponed 15 Years AFL and 15 and 18 Years Rugby League Trials for Met North have been moved to Tuesday, 9 March, due to the current wet weather conditions. Sporting Wet Weather Procedures The College provides you the following option when dealing with wet weather or cancellations: Junior and Secondary Sports Information Line is 36319080. This line is ‘live’ and will be updated as often as required. Decisions on training status (poor weather) will be made at 2.00pm (training days). Please check for the status of training or weekend sport as often as possible. For Saturday sport, the line will be amended by 7am after consultation with opposition school sports masters and College grounds staff.

As a ‘golden rule’, unless the Cricket has been called off you should make the effort to get to the venue and let the umpires or coaches make the decision to call the fixture off. Just because it is raining or has rained where you live does not mean that it is raining or has rained at another College’s ovals. The respective Association By-Laws allow for play to be delayed due to poor weather. It is asked that all parents firstly use the Sports Information Line to obtain any up to date changes on training and game status. We ask that you only contact the College Office or Student Office only if the matter is urgent. Other Avenues of Communication If information is not placed in The Calling due to the lateness of the information or unforeseen changes all students must be responsible enough to: • Listen to any Student Office announcements • Listen to daily messages and messages passed on during Tutor Group meetings. • Look on Sporting Notice Boards (near the Tuckshop) • Contact coaching coordinators for their sport with any concerns. Parents can: • Contact Sports Information Line. • Refer to The Calling • Look at the College website

DIRECTOR OF CULTURE —GEOFF SAMUELS

Students and coaches alike have been busy both last week and this week attending the coaching clinics and Summer School provided by the Queensland Debating Union. Unfortunately the boys were charged at the venue when St Pat’s should have been directly invoiced. Boys who attended the Summer School should let their coaches or Mrs O’Sullivan know asap so they can be reimbursed. First debates in the preliminary rounds will begin next week with Years 9 and 12. Unfortunately, due to Industrial Action any teacher who is a member of QIEU will not be helping coach or attend debates next week. We trust parents and students will understand that we do not wish to disrupt co-curricular activities but we are left with no alternative action at this stage. COMMUNITY NEWS

O’Rourke House

Already we are halfway through Term1 and fully entrenched in all aspects of school life. O’Rourke, as always, has been kept ever so busy with all the day to day commotion. The O’Rourke 2010 Inter-House chess is well under way with a large percentage of O’Rourke boys participating. In the coming weeks we are all looking forward to cheering our

swimming team to victory at AIC and CIC. We wish all the SPC boys the best of luck in the final rounds of Cricket and Volleyball. The final day of this term is the annual Shore to Gate run. In the lead up to this each student will be expected to raise money, the proceeds going back into the community. Finally we wish the best of luck to everyone in their studies, in particular the Year 11s and 12s with less than 2 weeks to go before examination block. All the best. O’Rourke House Leaders

QUANE HOUSE Quane House is on fire this year. Already we’ve started this year full of fun and exciting events, kicking it off with the 40 legged race, with Quane 7 through incredible teamwork managing to get across the oval all tied together at the ankle in less than one minute. The following House assembly we hosted in the College pool the annual Quane House belly flop contest, showcasing our many talented Quane House brothers. Our finalists were Makuel Makuel, the loudest; Tim Carter, the highest and widest, and Luc Rance, the man amongst men. Just last week we held our famous red cordial sculling competition (an event most loved

by all the junior school teachers) in which Quane 1 took first position, Quane 2 came in second and Quane 4 was third. We would like to extend our congratulations to all of our Quane House Chess competitors who were burning with the desire to win. This year is looking very promising for Quane House and we expect the year to only get better for Quane House. We are all looking forward to working and playing with all the boys in the future.
