Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, Last week was perhaps the most tragic week in the history of this College. However, never in my seven years at the College have I been so proud to be associated with St Patrick’s College as I was last week. The sense of community spirit and support that pervaded all aspects of our week was overpowering. I wish to convey my personal thanks to all those people who offered support and encouragement to myself and the College community. It was very reassuring to know that we were not alone. Brigitte and Russell Fletcher have indicated their thanks and I have included a short message from them below. This week I have met with a range of people and agencies as we develop an ongoing crisis management strategy for the future. A letter detailing a variety of ongoing support services will be distributed tomorrow and links to various agencies will be placed on our College website. It is important that all members of our community have an opportunity to continue to access support. Part of this strategy will involve a parent meeting where experts will be available to support parents and students with ongoing strategies. I will forward details of this meeting when they become available. It has been important this week to re-establish routine for the students. Assessment calendars have been distributed this week, QCS practices have begun, homework and assignments have been issued, sports training has continued, band practice has occurred and, importantly, teaching and learning has been taking place. I encourage all families to work together on the maintenance of this routine. Equally, I remind parents that ongoing counselling services are available through Mark Mewburn. As I conclude this week I would like to thank the large number of people who have passed on their support of me over this last week. It has been very humbling and reassuring, and I leave you with a recent Letter to the Editor that sent to the Courier Mail. I would like to thank you for the support that was given to our community last week. It is important that we continue to keep a watchful eye over our students. The strength of our community has been the relationships that exist between parents and the school, and the boys and their teachers. If you notice any changes in your son’s behaviour or you feel that he needs some extra help please do not hesitate to call, key people being House Deans, Group Tutors or myself.

• Inter-House Chess: The first round of Inter-House chess commenced this week. All houses were well represented.

• Week 5: “Hair Week” Hair: We have concluded Week 4. Next week we will be over half way through the term. I ask that you check your son’s hair and, if required, make the necessary

arrangements to have his hair cut to meet the College guidelines before the start of next week. I remind all students that hair needs to be combed in a style that is appropriate for school. We have spoken to a number of boys and have given letters to parents of those boys who require to have their haircut earlier. The “shaggy” look is not part of the Hair and Grooming policy at St Patrick’s College. I also remind you that the “no fringe cut” that accentuates the “Mohawk” and “Mullet” is not permitted at St Patrick’s. I ask that you check your son’s diary Pages 21-22 for the full Hair and Grooming Guidelines.

• Uniform: All students are reminded that the uniform is to be worn correctly at all times. This includes shirts tucked in, socks pulled up, top buttons done up and

ties worn correctly. All students were informed at Assembly this week that consequences will occur if they are not wearing the uniform correctly. This is from the moment they leave home until they return in the afternoon.

• Public Transport: St Patrick’s is a great school but it can be let down in its public image if the students are poorly behaved on public transport. The College will not tolerate poor behaviour on public transport. Students misbehaving in this area will face a range of consequences as a result of their actions. The St Patrick’s Social that was to occur this Saturday, 27 February, has been cancelled due to the tragic event of last week.

COLLEGE DEAN

Last week was obviously a very traumatic time for the St Patrick’s community. I would like to sincerely thank all the people who have passed on their thoughts and prayers to me personally, to the CLT, to the teaching staff and to the St Pat’s community. That level of support during hard times is a great comfort to us all. Amongst a full range of emotions last week, two statements stood out for me. Bridgett Fletcher spoke to me about her wish that all our boys will grow to be better young men. Father Liam reflected in his homily that it was important to focus not how we die, but on how we live. It is opportune during this Lenten period that we all stop and reflect on how we live our lives and how we can make things better. The support and care that we have shown as a community to each other is an excellent base to build a better environment for everyone around us. I pray that we may all continue to reflect on our actions and be able to put our

positive intent into action daily. Our annual Shore to Gate walkathon will be held on the last day of Term 1 – Thursday, 1 April. It will be a fun day to conclude our first term together. It is also our major fundraising activity for the year. Every student will be given a sponsors/donation card next week and students are asked to make an effort to collect money. A letter will accompany the sponsors card explaining more details about the day and the fundraising. I invite all families to encourage their son to be involved in this community project. Our Overseas Exchange students left last week to return home to Vancouver and Cincinnati. Nic, Brendan, Sebastian, Lucas and Max have been wonderful ambassadors for their families, their schools and their countries. It has been a real pleasure having the boys as part of the St Patrick’s community. They fitted in so easily and showed a great spirit to get

involved and try as much as possible. I really enjoyed their company on a trip to Sydney recently. They are fine young men. A special big thank you goes to our host families – the Harris, Hoffmann, Row, Morrison and Caruana families – who have done an outstanding job in making our guests feel welcomed and showing them all the special places and characteristics of Australia. The present Year 11 students will have the Exchange Program explained in more detail during Term 2 before applications are called for.

Lent is a time when we are called to come closer to God. Now, more than ever, it is important for our community to listen to that call. Elliott’s tragic passing last week can make us ask the question, “Where is God in this?” In trying to respond, we have a couple of options. We can choose to turn our back on God out of confusion or frustration; or we can choose to look more closely and see the face of God in various places around us. We saw the face of God in Mr and Mrs Fletcher last week, as they showed us the inner strength that faith can give. We saw the face of God in the staff of our College last week as they did everything they could to assist boys, parents, families and each other. We saw the face of God in our students as they lent on each other and supported each other. We saw the face of God in Elliott – during the

Mass to celebrate his life, and in our own memories and hearts. These images will stay with us, and so will God. Lent is a time when we are called to pray so that our relationship with God is strengthened. On Assembly this week, I encouraged boys to focus a little more time and energy on prayer and reflection this Lenten period – alone, and in class and Tutor Group. Lent can sometimes be seen as the time to give something up – chocolate, soft drink, computer games etcetera. While I encourage boys to try to make sacrifices this Lent, more importantly, I hope that boys use this time to make a positive contribution to the lives of others. I have given them the challenge to choose one simple thing to do. It could be “helping Mum by cleaning my bedroom without being asked”; “tidying up the area where I sit at lunch so that a

staff member doesn’t have to pick up after me”; “talking to the boy on the bus, or in my class or tutor group whom I usually ignore”. These are not large undertakings, but they can make a difference, and in conjunction with prayer and reflection, help to bring us closer to each other and to God. I ask you also to keep in your prayers the Year 12 boys who will attend the first Kairos Retreat of 2010 from Sunday to Tuesday next week. This experience is very much focussed on opening our eyes to God around us – in our silent times, in our relationships, and in life’s challenges. I look forward to spending this time with some our Senior students, and I wish everyone in the St Patrick’s community all the very best for the week ahead. God bless.

Mark Mewburn This week we have organised extra counsellors from both Education Qld and Brisbane Catholic Education. This allows us to continue to work with a large group of boys each day as well as giving me some flexibility to deal with planning issues. For parents/students looking for useful information, my Counsellor’s Web Page has lots of options on a variety of issues. This Web Page is accessible via the Student Intranet. (Boys need to Log-In) This week we are looking to have boys accessing counsellors via an appointment. These can be made through myself: directly by boys or via my phone/email. Please continue to keep in touch with me regarding your sons. We also hope to have some firm arrangements soon regarding options for outside referrals if required. Gap Year Abroad

If there are students/parents interested in the concept of a Gap Year abroad, there

are a number of organisations that can make this happen. Projects Abroad is having an information night an 2 March 6:30-7:30 at Hotel George Williams, George Street, Brisbane. You can register your interest at www.projects-abroad.com.au/more-info/meet-us . I also have information on other companies.

Rockschool Challenge registrations close 5 March Southbank TAFE music students are presenting the 2010 Rockschool Challenge, a ‘battle of the bands’ for high school students. Applicants must register by 5 March, 2010, by applying to [email protected] and sending a link to their myspace or website. The application needs to include a photo of the band, a bio and two different songs (covers or originals). The band must be able to perform a 20 minute set at the competition. Performances will be held at Southbank Institute. Heats start in May.

Two Homes has been set up by a team of parents who all have first hand experience of working through the difficult issues of separation, divorce and raising children who live in two homes. When parents separate, they often feel like their world has been turned upside down. Everything changes and sometimes it's hard enough just getting through the day. www.twohomes.com.au has been created to help guide parents through this tough time and to provide information, tips and tools that educate and empower parents to manage the separation process as well as possible. 36319073 [email protected]

STUDIES

Alan Clark Mathletics All students from Year 5 to 7 are accessing Mathletics after the successful four week trial of this program late last year. Mathletics is an interactive e-Learning resource, being used by over 2,000 schools. Originating in Australia, Mathletics is now being used in over ten countries. The primary goal of Mathletics is to improve Mathematics results. Your son has been given his own user name and password. This program will be used at school and can also be accessed at home. First step is to visit www.mathletics.com. The first time a student signs in he will be asked to make a Mathlete. This is the character that he will play under. Within Mathlete Maker

pupils are able to select from all sorts of characteristics. The boys are able to earn credits for their Mathlete by gaining High Scores and Participation Certificates. The credits are used to obtain additional items for the Mathlete character. This program is a wonderful way for boys to learn their tables in a fun and engaging way. Writing Success This year across Year 5 to 7 there will be a focus on developing our boys as better writers. The College has, as part of the Commonwealth Partnerships with schools funding, introduced the “Seven Steps to Writing Success”. A number of staff have been trained in the program with the rest to be trained by midyear. This program

provides an excellent guide to developing interesting stories and also assists in NAPLAN preparation. The Seven Steps break down writing into seven main skills. “Chunking” makes writing easier to teach and quicker to learn.

Year 12 Indonesian The Year 12 Speaking exam has been moved from 22 / 23 February to Wednesday, 3 March, Period 2 and Friday, 5 March’ Period 2. Year 12 History Exam The Year 12 History Exam has been moved from 23 February to 1 April in Periods 1 and 2

Chris Carlill Stress and Exams Examinations are here for Middle School Learners. It is the rule rather than the exception for students to feel nervous before examinations. This can often help them do their best in the same way that an athlete performs best under pressure. Below is information that will help Middle School Learners, their parents and teachers through this time. Positive Stress Management Students who manage best: • Maintain positive relationships with family and friends • Continue to allow some time for exercise and leisure • Get plenty of sleep • Eat sensibly • Have planned time for study • Are organised • Learn and practise simple techniques for relaxation.

Warning Signs It is important to recognise when stress levels may be going beyond a helpful level, to identify sources of stress if possible, and to take steps to address them. Warning signs especially where they indicate changes from usual behavior are: • Irritability • Tiredness • Poor concentration • Poor short term memory • Recurring worrying thoughts • Lack of tolerance for others (you may not detect that in yourself) • Anxiety about little things • Listlessness • Proneness to bursts of anger and tears • Indications of feeling 'down', alone or misunderstood • Disturbed sleep

• Indigestion, poor appetite. No one sign necessarily is cause for worry and these signs need to be considered in the context of the person's life at the time. It is better to seek help than to struggle with worries by yourself. Signs of depression or anxiety in particular should not be ignored. Help should be sought from school counsellors, family doctors or others, sooner rather than later. Teachers and Group Tutors will continue to make themselves available to students during the lead up to examinations and can offer specific advice to individual students about their examination preparation. NEXT WEEK: TOP 10 TIPS FOR STUDYING AND TOP 10 EXAMINATION TECHNIQUES.

Sporting Wet Weather Procedures The College provides you the following option when dealing with wet weather or cancellations: Junior and Secondary Sports Information Line is 36319080. This line is ‘live’ and will be updated as often as required. Decisions on training status (poor weather) will be made at 2pm (training days). Please check for the status of training or weekend sport as often as possible. For Saturday sport, the line will be amended by 7am after consultation with opposition school sports masters and college grounds staff. As a ‘golden rule’, unless the Cricket has been called off you should make the effort to get to the venue and let the umpires or coaches make the decision to call the fixture off. Just because it is raining or has rained where you live does not mean that it is raining or has rained at another College’s ovals. The respective Association By-Laws allow for play to be delayed due to poor weather. It is asked that all parents firstly use the Sports Information Line to obtain any ‘up to date’ changes on training and game status. We ask that you contact the College’s Student Office or main office only if the matter is urgent. Other Avenues of Communication If information is not placed in The Calling due to the lateness of the information or unforeseen changes all students must be responsible enough to: • Listen to any Student Office announcements • Listen to daily messages and messages passed on during Tutor Group meetings. • Look on Sporting Notice Boards (near the tuckshop) • Contact coaching coordinators for their Sport with any concerns. Parents can: • Contact Sports Information Line. • Refer to The Calling • Look at the College website Following are the names of coordinators and contact details for this term’s sports. • Cricket - Mr. Ryan Schultz [email protected]

• Cricket – Mr Geoff Paulsen [email protected] • Volleyball – Mr. Chris Carlill [email protected] • Swimming – Mr Shane Bowden [email protected] • Rugby – Mr Heath Mackintosh [email protected] • Football – Mr Ryan Schultz [email protected] • Football – Mr Luke Donatini [email protected] • Cross Country – Mr Craig Gunn [email protected] (Term 1) As you all can appreciate, successful communication is sometimes the key to smooth running of events. If we are all mindful of the above processes that are in place, we will be up to date and in the know. Our support for this program has grown in recent years in terms of both participants and spectators. On each night of competition our boys are pitted against students from 4 or 5 other colleges in a battle of wits and dramatic improvisation which always provides a great night’s entertainment for all present. The dates for round one of this year’s tournament are as follows. MONDAY 19 APRIL, 7PM - GRACE LUTHERAN COLLEGE TUESDAY 27 APRIL, 7PM - ST PATRICKS COLLEGE THURSDAY 29 APRIL, 7PM - NORTHSIDE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE It would be great to see a large contingent of supporters present on each of these nights.

P & F NEWS On behalf of the P&F and all the College Support Groups I would like to offer our heartfelt sympathy to the Fletcher family and all families in our community that have been touched by our recent loss. The ST PATICK’S DINNER DANCE “SHINDIG” will go ahead. The organising committee and Dr Carroll agreed that it is a time for our parents and caregivers to come together, unite as part of the St Patrick’s community and move forward.

United we Stand, Bonded we are Strong in Spirit,

In the love for our Boys. DATE CLAIMER: 13 MARCH - ST PATICK’S DINNER DANCE “SHINDIG”. We will still need volunteers to help set up (Friday 12 March from 3pm), run the bar, welcome guests and sell raffle tickets on the evening. We would also appreciate donations of items for the raffle. Please contact Diane Hamill (0413 130 863) to leave your name if you are able to assist. Remember – the more people who can help, the less time you will be required. Did You Know??? Tables can be booked for the Shindig by Contacting Sharie Faloon in the College office and tables can seat 10 guests. Don’t worry if you can’t fill a table as Sharie can add extra people or even include other guests who have sons from the same year level. This year the organising committee is seeking your assistance at the end of the evening to help clean up – many hands make light work. We ask if, when you book a table, you could also be the Table Captain for the evening. All that is required is to organize your guests to help clean up at the end on the night. We look forward to seeing you at the Shindig! Diane Hamill President H: 3205 5180 (after 6pm) Mob: 0413 130 863
