INTRODUCTION

Since the publication of the first edition of this list (Papers for Students No. 7 , 1 9 6 9) a wealth of material has been published. Recent issues of the Mollusca Section of the Zoological Record list three to four thousand books and papers for many countries, some of which concern British Mollusca, but this list must be very selective with about tx/o hundred titles. Emphasis is on identification, but works on various other aspects of the study of Mollusca are included (there are no faunal lists, which may be a subject for a future Paper for Students). Basic texts will indicate more detailed references on particular topics. As different works are needed for different ages and stages, introductory guides for beginners are listed as well as specialised treatises for advanced students.

SOURCES FOR OBTAINING AND CONSULTING LITERATURE

LIBRARIES: Local libraries are linked through county library servicesto the national inter-library loans system, so that it is possible to obtain most papers and books from other county libraries a.nd national and academic libraries.

MUSEUMS: Some museums have general works on Mollusca, and most ha,veregional publications, some of which contain local lists.

ENVIRONMENTAL RECORD CENTRES: With the backing of the Biological RccordsCentre, there are many regional centres, usually in county museums, which are a source for manuscript material as well as references to published work.

BOOKSELLERS: Catalogues of new and antiquarian booksellers serve toform reference lists and may be collected with this in mind. There is great variation in the prices of second-hand books, so it is as well to get in touch with many firms, at home arjd abroad.

PHOTOCOPY & MICROFILM SERVICES: Local and national libraries now supplycopies. The General Library of the British Museum (Natural History) has a photocopying unit and supplies copies by post.

SOCIETIES AND THEIR PUBLICATIONS: Back numbers of publications axeoften available, at reduced cost for members. Addresses of national societies can usually be obtained from the Council for Nature or larger public libraries. Authors of papers in scientific

journals can "buy copies of their articles as off-prints, which form a "basis of exchange with other authors, but one should not request such off-prints lightly.
