About the supplied remote control (RC-R0809)...Compared to standard remote controls, the remote control supplied with this receiver has several operationmodes. These modes enable the remote control to control other audio/video components. In order toeffectively use the remote control it is important to read the operating instructions and obtain a properunderstanding of the remote control and how to switch its operation modes (etc.).Using the remote control without completely understanding its design and how to switch the operation modesmay result in incorrect operations.

This instruction manual is used to describe multiple models listed above.

Dolby Pro Logic & Dolby 3 StereoThis surround system reproduces theater-like surround sound fromvideo software marked .The PRO LOGIC mode uses the built-in adaptive matrix circuit to steerthe Left, Center, Right and Surround channel audio signals.The 3 STEREO mode will redirect the Surround signal to the front leftand right speakers when only the front and center speakers are used.

Dolby Digital (AC-3)The DOLBY DIGITAL (AC-3) mode lets you enjoy full digital surroundfrom software processed in the Dolby Digital (AC-3) format. DolbyDigital (AC-3) provides up to 5.1 channels of independent digital audiofor better sound quality and more powerful presence than conventionalDolby Surround.

DTSDTS (Digital Theater System) is a 5.1 channel digital audio format thatprovides five full-spectrum channels and one low-frequency (subwoofer)channel for unprecedented clarity, optimum channel separation and a(wide) dynamic range.In the DTS mode, the 5.1 channel digital input from a DTS CD, LD orDVD disc (carrying the “DTS” marking) can be played in Digital Sur-round.Important:When a DTS disc is played on a CD, LD or DVD player, noise may beoutput from the analog output. It is recommended that you connect thedigital output of the player to the digital input of this unit.

Multi channel music (SRS Circle Surround )SRS Circle surround enables you to listen to multi channel sound fromthe stereo source. We assume you have already enjoyed listening toDolby digital sound/DTS multi channel sound with your multi speakers.Now, this time try listening to the stereo source (ex. Audio CD) usingyour multi speakers. You may discover a new type of “stereo” soundthrough SRS Circle Surround.

New DSP surround modesThe DSP (Digital Signal Processor) used for this receiver incorporatesa variety of high quality adjustable sound fields, like "ARENA" and"THEATER". It is compatible with almost any kind of program source.

DVD 6-channel inputIf you own a DVD player equipped with 6-channel output, this receiverallows you to obtain the full surround sound impact of DVD sourcematerial featuring multi-channel encoding. Since the source signals aredigital and each channel is input independently, the resulting ambienceis far superior to what can be achieved with conventional surroundsound systems.

Universal IR (InfraRed) remote controlIn addition to the basic receiver, the remote control supplied with thisreceiver can also operate almost all of your remote controllable audio andvideo components. Just follow the simple setup procedure to register thecomponents you have connected.

MACRO playThe MACRO function lets you perform a series of operations automati-cally, like turning ON the power of the receiver and connected compo-nents, switching the input selectors, and starting playback. (Be sure toregister your components before starting the macro set up procedure.

PreparationsShows you how to connect your audio and video components to thereceiver and prepare the surround processor.We've tried to make setting up your system as easy as possible. However,since this receiver works with all of your audio and video components,connecting the system can be fairly complex.

Remote Control (Separate booklet)Includes the “Quick Start Guide,” which shows you how to operate othercomponents using the remote control, as well as a detailed explanationof all remote control operations. Once you have registered your compo-nents with the proper setup codes, you’ll be able to operate both thisreceiver and your other AV components (TV, VCR, DVD player, LD player,CD player, etc.) using the remote control supplied with this receiver.

Standby mode

While the standby indicator of the unit is lit, a small amount of current is flowing into the unit’s internal circuitry to back up the memory. This condition isreferred to as the standby mode of the unit. While the unit is in the standby mode, it can be turned ON from the remote control unit.

AustraliaDTS Digital Surround™ is a discrete 5.1 channel digital audio formatavailable on CD, LD, and DVD software which consequently cannot bedecoded and played back inside most CD, LD, or DVD players. For thisreason, when DTS-encoded software is played back through the analogoutputs of the CD, LD, or DVD player, excessive noise will be exhibited.To avoid possible damage to the audio system, proper precautionsshould taken by the consumer if the analog outputs are connecteddirectly to an amplification system. To enjoy DTS Digital Surround™playback, an external 5.1 channel DTS Digital Surround™ decodersystem must be connected to the digital output (S/P DIF, AES/EBU, orTosLink) of the CD, LD or DVD player.This unit is equipped with DTS Digital Surround™ decoder.

When you connect the unit and the CD or MD player with thedigital connection, you can enjoy the higher sound quality.

Analog connectionsAudio connections are made using RCA pin cords. These cables transferstereo audio signal in an “analog” form. This means the audio signalcorresponds to the actual audio of two channels. These cables usually have2 plugs each end, one red for the right channel and one white for the leftchannel. These cables are usually packaged with the source unit, or areavailable at your local electronics retailer.

Microcomputer malfunctionIf operation is not possible or an erroneous display appears, even thoughall connections have been made properly, reset the microcomputerreferring to “In case of difficulty”. §

Be sure to adhere followings. Or proper ventilation will be blockedcausing damage or fire hazard.• Install the KRF-V8030D on the top of the system.• Do not place any objects impairing heat radiation onto the top of unit.• Leave a space around the unit (from the largest outside dimension

including projection) equal or greater than, shown below.

The digital in jacks can accept DTS, Dolby Digital (AC-3), or PCM signals.Connect components capable of outputting DTS, Dolby Digital (AC-3), orstandard PCM (CD) format digital signals.If you have connected any digital components to the receiver, be sure toread the “Input mode settings” section on this page carefully.

Digital connections

To connect an LD player with a DIGITAL RF OUT, connect the LDplayer to the KENWOOD RF digital demodulator (DEM-9991D).Next, connect the DIGITAL OUT jacks of the demodulator to theDIGITAL IN jacks of the receiver.Connect the video signal and analog audio signals to the VIDEO2 or VIDEO 3 jacks. (See "Connecting video components".)

Input mode settingsCD, DVD, VIDEO2, and VIDEO3 inputs each include jacks for digitalaudio input and analog audio input.You must select beforehand which type of input is to be used for eachconnected component.The initial factory setting is to use the digital audio signal forplayback (CD, DVD, VIDEO2, VIDEO3).To use the analog audio input for playback instead (if, for example, youhave connected a VCR to the VIDEO2 or VIDEO3 input), you must setthe input mode for the corresponding input to the analog mode.After completing connections and turning on the receiver, follow thesteps below.

1 Use the INPUT SELECTOR knob to select CD, DVD, VIDEO2, orVIDEO3.

2 Press the INPUT MODE key.

Each press switches the setting as follows:

In DTS play mode1 D-AUTO (digital input, auto sound)2 D-MANUAL (digital input, manual sound)

Digital input:Select this setting to play digital signals from a DVD, CD, or LD player.

Analog input:Select this setting to play analog signals from a cassette deck, VCR,or turntable.

Auto sound:In the auto sound mode (AUTO SOUND indicator lights), the receiverselects the listening mode automatically during playback to match thetype of input signal (Dolby Digital, PCM, DTS ) and the speaker setting.The initial factory setting is auto sound on.To keep the receiver set to the currently selected listening mode, usethe INPUT MODE key to select “D-MANUAL ” (manual sound).However, even when this setting is selected, there may be cases inwhich the listening mode is selected automatically to match a DolbyDigital source signal depending on the combination of listening modeand source signal.

Connecting the system control

Connecting system control cords after connecting a KENWOODaudio component system lets you take advantage of convenientsystem control operations.

This unit is compatible only with the [SL-16] mode. The systemcontrol operation is not available if the unit is connected in the[XS-8], [XS] or [XR] connection mode.

If your component has the mode select switch, set the connectedcomponents to the [SL-16] mode.

• In order to take advantage of the system control operations, thecomponents must be connected to the correct jacks. To use a CDplayer it must be connected to the CD jacks. To use a cassette deck(or MD recorder) it must be connected to the MD/TAPE jacks. Whenusing more than one CD player (etc.) only the one connected to thespecified jacks may be connected for system control.

• Some CD players and cassette decks are not compatible with the[SL16] system control mode. Do not make system connections withequipment that is not [SL16] compatible.

• Some MD players are not system control compatible. You cannotmake system control connections to this kind of equipment.

Notes1. [SL16] equipment cannot be combined with [XR], [XS], and [XS8]

equipment for system operations. If your equipment consists of thiskind of combination, please do not connect any system control cords.Even without system control cords, normal operations can be carriedout without effecting performance.

Input level adjustment (analog sources only)

If the input level of an analog source signal is too high, adjust the inputlevel.

1 Use the INPUT SELECTOR knob to select the source who’sinput level you want to adjust.

• You can store a separate input level for each input source. If theMONITOR function is on, you can store an input level for whenMONITOR is on independently of the input levels for the inputsources.

2 Press the SOUND key several times until the “INPUT” indicationappears.

3 Use the MULTI CONTROL knob or the 5/∞ keys to adjust theinput level.

• The adjustment mode is displayed for approximately eight seconds.• The input level may be adjusted to any one of three settings: 0,

Selecting MD/TAPESelect the source name corresponding to the component connected tothe MD/TAPE jacks. The initial factory setting is “TAPE”. To change thesource name associated with the MD/TAPE jacks to “MD,” follow thesteps below:

2 Hold down the AUTO key for more than 2 seconds.

• The source indication changes to “MD”.• To return to the original indication, repeat the above procedure.

DVD 6-channel playback

Using a DVD player or the like equipped with six (5.1) output channels andthe receiver, you can enjoy surround sound playback.When you try to play a disc other than Dolby Digital (AC-3) such as DTSCD, no sound is produced or, noise may be heard. To avoid this situation,make sure that you connect the component to the receiver’s DVD 6CH.INPUT jacks through a surround processor which can decode thesurround signal you wont to listen to.Connecting a DVD player which can decode the surround signal itself isalso acceptable.

Preparations

Select “DVD/6ch” as the input source.• If speaker system B is on when “DVD/6ch” is selected as the input

source, it switches off and speaker system A turns on automatically.

• It is not possible individually to adjust the volume level or sound quality(SETUP, SOUND) of the separate channels when the receiver is in theDVD 6ch mode. Adjust the volume with the controls of the DVD player.For the powered subwoofer, you can adjust the volume of thesubwoofer using the subwoofer’s own volume control.

• Connect your DVD player to the DVD 6ch jacks of the receiver.8

Midnight mode (Dolby Digital (AC-3) mode only)When watching movies at night you might not be able to raise the volumeas loud as normal. Midnight mode compresses the dynamic range ofpreviously specified parts of the Dolby Digital (AC-3) sound track (likescenes with sudden increases in volume) to minimize the difference involume between the specified and non-specified parts. This makes it easyto hear all of the sound track, even when listening at low volumes.

Resetting the MicrocomputerIf the microcomputer may malfunction (unit cannot be operated,or shows an erroneous display) if the power cord is unpluggedwhile the power is ON, or due to some other external factor. If thishappens, execute the following procedure to reset the micro-computer and return the unit to its normal operating condition.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, then plug itback in while holding down the POWER key.

• Please note that resetting the microcomputer will clear the contentsof the memory and returns the unit to the state it was in when it left thefactory.

This quick start guide explains how to setup the remotecontrol to operate audio and video components otherthan the receiver.In order to make full use of the functions of the remotecontrol, be sure to read the section of this manualentitled “Getting the most from your remote control”.It contains a detailed explanation of how to operate theremote control and make the necessary settings.The quick start guide describes the operation of thefollowing keys:

Register the setup codes for your audio and video components

Automatic input namingIn the initial factory setting, the remote control already has provisional component names registered for each input. Before you register setup codes, pressingthe input keys of the remote control causes the display to change from the factory preset input names of the receiver (VIDEO1, VIDEO2, etc.) to the inputnames registered in the remote control (VCR1, VCR2, etc.). Once you have registered the appropriate setup codes for your components, pressing the inputkeys of the remote control causes the display to change to the actually connected component names (LD, DVD, etc.) for which you have registered setupcodes.

Step 8Press the AV.POWER key to see ifyou can turn the component on and off.

If your component has a mechanicalPOWER switch that cannot be operatedby remote control unit, press the dis-play operation 2 [Enter] key and dis-play operation 1 [Home] key, and se-lect the component by pressing theMUSIC, MOVIE, or TV key, then pressthe PLAY (‹) key or TUNING (2 3) keyto test it.

If the component does not respond when you try tocontrol it, return to step 7 and enter the next setupcode on the list. Repeat this procedure until you findthe code that matches the component. When thecomponent does not respond, select " Nothing."

Step 9Press the display operation 2 [Enter]key to store the code.

Repeat steps 3 through 9 to enter the codes for eachcomponent you want to control.

Press the display operation 1 key repeatedly until “Menu”appears in the display.

If you accidentally exit the registration mode by pressing thewrong key, you will not lose any setup codes you havealready saved.

• At this time all inputs become available regardless of any earlierregistration.

Low battery warningReplace all four batteries with new ones when you notice a shorteningof the distance from which the remote control will operate. The remotecontrol is designed to retain setup codes in memory while you changebatteries.

For step 1 through step @, make sure you start the next stepwithin 8 seconds of completing the previous one. If more than8 seconds elapses between any two steps, press the displayoperation keys so that the display appears.

Registering setup codes for other components

To register the setup code, use the display operation 1 key, displayoperation 2 key, or 5/∞ keys.

The display operation 1 key and display operation 2 key work as thefunction key displayed in the display above.

The display goes off automatically when you do not operate for more than8 seconds. In this case, press the display operation 1 key, displayoperation 2 key, or 5/∞ keys.

When the display goes off

Press the display operation 1 key repeatedly until “Menu” appears in thedisplay.The display returns to the initial display.

This operation lets you operate the registered components.KENWOOD audio components with system control turn on and offautomatically with the receiver via the system control connections.

Use the MUSIC, MOVIE, or TV key to select the componentyou desire.

• Pressing the MUSIC or MOVIE key also changes the input selectoron the receiver. If you do not want to change the current input, pressthe SHIFT key before step 1.

NoteBe sure to point the remote control at the remote sensor on the receiverwhen you want to operate KENWOOD components connected bysystem control cords. Otherwise, point the remote control at the compo-nent you want to operate.

Remote Control

The macro play function allows you to set the remote to control severalcomponents in succession. After completing this setup, you can performa series of operations automatically. Enter the setup codes for thecomponents you want to control beforehand.

Preparing for automatic operations(MACRO play)

The order of the operations may be fairly complex and you maynot be remember all of the necessary commands during thesetup procedure.Use the space provided below to write down the operations inthe order you are going to enter them.

1 Press the TV key, then press the AV.POWER key to turnon the TV.

2 Press the F. SHIFT key, then press the "3" (INPUT SEL.) keyto set the TV to the appropriate video input.

3 Press the MOVIE key to select the LD player registered atVIDEO 2.

4 Press the AV.POWER key to turn on the LD player.

This example shows you how to create a macro that; turns on the TV,sets the TV to the appropriate input, selects the receiver's input selectorto LD, and turns on the LD player. All you have to do is insert the laserdisc!

• Make sure you start the next operation within 8 seconds of complet-ing the previous one. If more than 8 seconds elapses between any twosteps, exit the macro programming mode.

• In order to allow verification of the remote control mode, the name ofthe selected input appears in the receiver's display when the MUSIC,MOVIE, or TV key is pressed. When the MUSIC or MOVIE key ispressed the receiver's input also changes.

When you connect a KENWOOD CD player (CD-425M, CD-4700M, CD-4260M, DPF-J6030), you can display the CD TEXT data in the display ofthe remote control unit.

1 Load the CD TEXT data to the CD player.

• "Text" appears when the CD TEXT data is read.

Before operation, regiser the setup code of the CD player.

1 Press the MUSIC key to select "CD".

2 Press the [Menu] key repeatedly until " SetUp" appears in thedisplay.

• The loading time may take a few moments.

In case of difficulty

Cause

• The batteries are nearing exhaustion.

• Subwoofer is OFF.

• No setup codes registered at for the respec-tive input(s).

• The remote control is set to a differentoperation mode.

• Batteries are exhausted.• The remote control unit is too far away from

the main system, controlling angle is toolarge, or there is an obstacle between thereceiver and the remote.

• The audio cords and system control cords arenot connected properly.

• No software is loaded in the sourcecomponent.

• An attempt is made to play a tape which isbeing recorded in the cassette deck.

• The remote control has not been set to theoperation mode for the component you wishto control.

• The microprocessor of the remote controlmalfunctions.

Remedy

• Replace with new batteries to preserve thecurrently registered setup information. $

• Turn the subwoofer ON. %

• Register a setup code or Non-IR code at therespective input(s). RC3

• Press the MUSIC, MOVIE, or TV keys toselect the appropriate operation mode.

• Replace with new batteries. $• Operate the remote control unit within the

controllable range.

• Connect properly referring to “Setting up thesystem”. 8

• Place software in the source component youwant to play.

• Wait until recording has completed.

• Press the MUSIC, MOVIE, or TV keys toactivate the operation mode for thecomponent you want to control beforeoperation. RC5

• Reset the microprocessor. §

Symptom

The battery indicator flashes during opera-tion.

Subwoofer volume cannot be adjusted.

Certain inputs cannot be selected using theremote control.

Remote control operation is not possible.
