This year we celebrate the 8th edition

of the International Summer

School of Mathematics (8th

EIVM), being the third that takes

place in Seville.

This is the first time that you, the

students, are representing all

Estalmat Projects in Spain in the

camp, and, as usual, with Russian

colleagues up to a total of 82

participants. You will spend two

weeks between us, staying at the

Colegio Mayor Hernando Colón,

located at the Reina Mercedes

University Campus of the University

of Seville; more than 70 teachers and

monitors will accompany you, with

activities related to mathematics and

culture mainly.

The first thing we want to do, as

organizers, is to give the most cordial

welcome in the name of the Instituto

de Matemáticas de la Universidad

de Sevilla (IMUS), the Sociedad

Andaluza de Educación

Matemática (SAEM) Thales, and of

all the teachers and monitors, hoping

that your stay will be as pleasant as

possible. But pleasant within a

mathematical and scientific context

that complements your training,

without losing the cultural, sporting

and playful aspects.

We are convinced that programmed

mathematical activities will be very

profitable, that cultural activities will

allow a better knowledge of the land

that welcomes you and that sports

and recreational activities will help to

foster a spirit of solidarity among

you. At least, those are our wishes.

But if there is one objective clearly

proposed by the organization of this

8th camp, living together! It makes

an impression for learning from the

cooperation and that allows you to

show you the irreplaceable role of

Mathematics, the oldest science of

our civilization. Science, culture are

collective facts that leave in you, by

your abilities and by your will and

interests, an indelible mark that

shapes you in knowledge and

facilitates you to be more supportive

and inclined to return each one to

society more than what it has

provided.

And we also leave you with an

assignment: to care for and nurture

the spirit of this meeting, not only

during its development, but also after

returning to your places of origin,

with the idea of maintaining and

expanding in the future cooperation,

without borders of any kind, around

Mathematics.

On Monday the 15th, in arriving to the Dorm in the evening, we did the dynamics of the “Mathematical

couples”. It was an ice-breaker. Each participant in the camp had a label with a Mathematical concept, a calculus, a

theorem… The target of the game was to identify the correspondent label, his/her “Mathematical couple”.

As couples were formed, the two members exchanged a present, and they posed for a photo. Presents were symbolic, just a

detail to show friendship. Labels were distributed in a way that the two members of the couple were from different origin.

To do the game funnier, a gain random factor, labels were grouped in sets of 4. Some of the boys and girls identified the

whole group and decided to form a quartet, instead of two pairs.

After dynamics, the labels were ordered in a Maths glossary, and we had a very cool gallery of “Mathematical couples and

quartets”. Here you are a sample.

During our stay in Seville, the residence Colegio Mayor Hernando Colón provides full board accommodation for

the whole group. This choice couldn’t have been more convenient, as this residence is just a stone’s throw from the Faculty

of Mathematics and it offers all the facilities and services we may need.

In particular, the dining-room is spacious and bright and the kitchen staff are extremely warm and attentive.

Every day all of us meet for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining-room, where the atmosphere is always cheerful and

relaxed. Around large tables, students, group leaders, lecturers and organizers share meals and conversation, getting to know

people from all over Spain, as well as our guests from Russia and Croatia.

Both, teenagers and adults agree in that not only is the amount of food abundant, but it is also very tasty. The

menus are designed by a College Commission in collaboration with the Dining Room Service, and we guess this is the reason

why almost everybody finds always dishes of his/her likes. Along with international dishes, like pasta or hamburgers, we are

also offered local food: different kinds of salads and soups, “gazpacho” and “salmorejo”, “pinchitos”, fried aubergine,

“chocolate con churros”, etc. For many students this is an opportunity to taste different ingredients or different recipes from

those they are used to eating at home. Obviously, so is for the Russian and Croatian students; for instance, Vlkadislav from

Russia tells us everyday how much he is enjoying the Spanish Food and that he had never had “chocolate con churros”

before!! However, Spanish students are also learning about local food from Andalucía. For example, Eduardo from

Cantabria, has discovered there is nothing more refreshing than “salmorejo”or watermelon in a hot day!! Lara, from Castilla

la Mancha, however, has particularly enjoyed “pinchitos”and fried courgettes.

All in all, we want to express our gratitude to the kitchen staff for being so kind and patient with us.

MATHEMATICAL KILLERS IN THE CAMP

Once again, some Killers have appeared in our Internacional summer Camp. However, no need to worry

because it's only a game.

The killer is a game well known in summer Camps, where You receive a name you have to kill and there is

one way to kill that person. In this ocassion, we decided every person was supposed to have an unique way to die. For

instance, some curious deaths were dancing crazily in front of the person. You wanted to kill, or to be able to recite a

personalized poem, or take a selfie with your victim.

The game's aim is to know better everyone in the summer Camp and to meet new people.

But, only one can survive. Who will be able to escape from their final Destiny?

In the International Summer School of Mathematics, we also have time for sports and other miscellaneous activities,

such as dance or playing cards. Seville is very hot in the summer so we have to start the activities late in the afternoon. For

these activities, as there are 82 students, we have divided them in groups. They play a different sport every day.

Teenagers usually need a reason to play and participate in some activities so we prepare a competition during the whole

camp, in which they obtain points as they win games. Some students say that the competition forces you to take things

seriously and it is very entertaining. It motivates you because we are competitive people and we always like to win. There are

different areas for different sports like a basketball court, a football court and a swimming pool. We also have a multipurpose

room where we play ping pong, pool and a home cinema.

In second place, students get to take part on various and varied activities like dancing, role playing and logical puzzles and

math games. Besides, one of the things that they have enjoyed the most is a gymkhana that is done in the centre and older

part of Seville.

To explore the “Barrio de Santa Cruz” in a different way. and solved some mathematical problems related to houses, narrow

streets, floor tiles….!

Thank you for your youth work in the VIII International Summer School of

Mathematics

Thanks for being part of this big family: “ ESTALMAT FAMILY”.

Since I came to the III EIVM I knew I wanted to come again for sure. Hopefully, this opportunity came to me this

year when they accepted me as a group leader. Thanks to this experience I was able to live this new camp from a completely

different point of view, which have given me the capacity to appreciate how much work and effort lay behind this amazing

camp.

I really enjoy planning games and activities for the students and sharing with them all the good moments we are

living these days. All in all, I truly believe that these International Summer School of Mathematics provides everyone with an

amazing and unique experience worth to repeat.
