For more than 40 years, ISO’s Farm Insurance Program has helped protect our nation’s growers from the risks of living and working off the land. But in that time, the roles of farmers and the exposures they face have changed dramatically.

Today, farmers aren’t just tending to crops and livestock. They’re running pick-your-own farms and hayrides, raising alpacas and ostriches, and facing new concerns on a wide range of issues from genetically modified organisms to pollution.

To meet the needs of today’s farms, we’re revising all of our coverage forms and more than half of our endorsements and introducing 20 new endorsements to cover a wide range of exposures. The following are a few of the highlights:

Agritainment Agritainment, or agritourism, refers to farm activities designed to entertain visitors, such as corn mazes, pick-your-own fields, and petting zoos. According to the 2012 Census of Agriculture, more than 33,000 farms in the United States offer agritourism and recreational services. That’s 42 percent more farms than the previous census in 2007.

Our new property and liability endorsements are designed to cover a wide range of agritainment activities. Genetically Modified Organisms Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have become an increasing concern among consumers and businesses around the world.

We’ve introduced new optional liability exclusions for bodily injury and property damage resulting from genetically modi-fied beans, crops, grains, seeds, plants, trees, shrubs, animals, or fish.

Animal LiabilityMany farmers today aren’t just caring for cows and chickens. They’re raising bison, ostriches, and llamas, all of which pose dangers to farmers and their visitors.

Our new animal liability endorsement excludes bodily injury and property damage arising out of direct physical contact with an animal specified by name, breed, category, or type.

Product Recalls About one in every six people in the United States gets sick from food-borne illnesses annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some of those illnesses are the result of pathogens that spread easily among raw fruits and vegetables (leafy greens and cantaloupes are among the most well known).

Our new coverage options reimburse the insured for certain product withdrawal expenses resulting from a product recall or tampering.

PollutionTo remain competitive in today’s markets, farmers have to rely on a wide range of equipment, including tractors, balers, and utility vehicles. But with each piece of mobile equipment, the potential for fuel leaks grows.

To address the changing needs of farmers, we’re reducing the scope of the Pollution Exclusion in our Farm Liability and Farm Umbrella Liability Coverage Forms. There’s now an exception to the exclusion that addresses bodily injury and property damages related to the escape of fuels, lubricants, or other fluids needed for the operation of mobile equipment.

Debris Removal Before you can repair or rebuild a structure that’s been damaged by fire, you have to pay for the cleanup. And today, ensuring that the debris is removed properly and in compliance with the law can be expensive.

Our new coverage option increases coverage for debris removal expense up to the limit of insurance applicable to the damaged property.

Hail and WindstormsHail and windstorms can cause significant damage. Between 2008 and 2013, U.S. insurers paid more than 6 million claims for hail losses, according to data from Verisk’s A-PLUSTM property database.

We’re introducing options to exclude cosmetic damage and to settle first-party loss or damage to roof surfacing caused by a windstorm or hail based on actual cash value.

Unoccupied and Vacant FarmsMany farmers today work the fields only part of the year and supplement their income with jobs away from home.

To address this changing reality, we’re revising the Farm Property – Other Farm Provisions Form to reduce the auto-matic reduction in coverage from 50 percent to 15 percent for unoccupancy and vacancy beyond 120 days.

Note: This is an overview of items contained in the filing. It is not a complete list. Please note that this summary does not provide any coverage, nor can it be construed to replace any provisions of the ISO policy or ISO endorsements discussed herein. Consult the ISO filing for actual descriptions and applicationsof coverages or exclusions.

Cyber riskLike other professionals today, farmers rely on computers to help manage their crops and livestock, communicate with suppliers, accept credit card payments from customers, and keep track of finances and billing. With computers, though, comes the potential risk of data breach, which may result in confidential customer information falling into the wrong hands.

We’ve introduced Electronic Data Liability coverage and exclusion-ary endorsements for bodily injury and property damage resulting from access to or disclosure of confidential or personal information.
