Scope of revision • be based on the common management

system framework and its identical

text, common terms and core

definitions

• consider the final report "Future

Challenges for EMS"

• ensure the maintenance and

improvement of the basic principles of

ISO 14001:2004, and also the retention

and improvement of its existing

requirements

Changes

Three focus areas:

1. holistic environment

2. business linkage

3. ‘cloud’ consideration

Holistic environment (i)

How environment effect your organisation

Page 8: ISO 14001 What are the key changes?...ISO/TC207 SC1 Common structure for MSS Introduction 1. Scope 2. Normative references 3. Terms and definitions 4. Context of the organization 5

Holistic environment (ii)

Protect the environment > pollution prevention • commit to proactive initiatives to protect the environment

from harm and degradation

• can include prevention of pollution, sustainable resource use, climate change mitigation and adaptation, protection of biodiversity and ecosystems, etc.

Holistic environment (iii) Life cycle perspective • extend its control and influence to the environmental

impacts associated with product design and development to address each stage of the life cycle

• sufficient to think carefully about the life cycle stages that can be controlled or influenced by the organization

• typical stages of a product (or service) life cycle include raw material acquisition, design, production, transportation/ delivery, use, end-of-life treatment and final disposal

• will vary depending on the activity, product or service

• does not imply a requirement to do a life cycle assessment

Holistic environment (iv)

Environmental Performance

• shift in emphasis with regard to continual improvement, from improving the management system to improving environmental performance

Business linkage (i)

Context + strategic planning process • understand the organization’s context to identify and leverage

opportunities for the benefit of both the organization and the environment

• focus is on issues or changing circumstances related to the needs and expectations of interested parties (including regulatory requirements) and local, regional or global environmental conditions that can affect, or be affected by, the organization

• actions to mitigate adverse risk or exploit beneficial opportunities are integrated in the operational planning of the environmental management system

Business linkages (ii)

Leadership • ensure the success of the system

• assigns specific responsibilities for those in leadership to promote environmental management within the organization

Business linkages (iii)

Transparency / Communication • develop a communications strategy with

equal emphasis on external and internal communications

• communicate consistent and reliable information

• decision to communicate externally is for the organization. Needs to take into account information reporting required by regulatory agencies and the expectations of other interested parties

‘Cloud’ / modern IT

Document information • evolution of computer and cloud based systems for running

management systems

• uses the term ‘documented information’, instead of ‘documents’ and ‘records’

• organization retain the flexibility to determine when ‘procedures’ are needed to ensure effective process control

ISO 14001 link with ISO 9001?

• close co-operation between the committees

• regularly updated tabular comparison on how various elements of the common structure for MSS was being handled by the two working groups.

• liaison arrangement to help understanding and to identify further need for alignment between the two standards

• NSB members were requested to collaborate among their respective ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 experts to develop and submit joint comments on issues related to alignment between the two standards

ISO 14001 - future My view 1. assisting organization to manage tradeoff

between environmental issues by using a life cycle perspective and supply chain considerations

2. becoming the tool of choice for organizations to integrate environmental issues and dependencies such as resource use into business strategic thinking, actions and plans

3. continuing to be the valued by significant number of users (in excess of 70%) for improving environmental performance, providing a competitive advantage and continuing to meet legal requirements
