Islands of WONDERThree-part series explores the wildlife
of Hawai‘i, Borneo and Madagascar
PROGRAM GUIDE | SEPTEMBER 2020 | VOL. 39 NO. 9
With the support of Kamehameha Schools, we’re looking to tap into the power of aloha&grit for the Islands.
This month, the voices of four mana wāhine (women of strength) will be heard on local media outlets, sharing a glistening pearl of wisdom as Hawai‘i trudges through these long months of the pandemic.
The mana wāhine are: the late Hawaiian cultural icon Nona Beamer; community mediator and activist Puanani Burgess; Chancellor of the University of Hawai‘i at West O‘ahu, Maenette Ah Nee-Benham; and musical artist Ku‘uipo Kumukahi.
Their voices will be followed in the year ahead by those of many other intriguing speakers. You’ll hear brief but potent mana‘o (belief, idea, thought, knowledge) in a year-long multimedia community resilience program: What’s it Going to Take? aloha&grit.
As Islanders, we know that there’s nothing weak about aloha. It is a life force of strength, humility, love and the alignment of mind and heart.
As for grit, experts say it’s more than bouncing back after a blow or loss. Psychologist/author Angela Duckworth describes it this way: “Grit is passion and perseverance for very long term goals. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality.”
For aloha&grit, PBS Hawai‘i will be reaching into our vast video archive and also conducting new interviews, sharing others’ wisdom about finding one’s way through adversity. We hope you’ll be inspired on your journey.
Watch for aloha&grit moments airing between regular TV programming! Or join us on social media. Or check our website for the newest aloha&grit messages at pbshawaii.org/aloha&grit.
Here’s to living with aloha&grit.

The power of aloha&grit
Two national public broadcasting systems, PBS in the United States and the BBC in the United Kingdom, team up for an exploration of three isolated island environments. These remote places – Madagascar, Borneo and Hawai‘i – harbor wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.
In the premiere episode, visit Madagascar, Earth’s oldest island, which has been isolated longer than any other place in the world. Life here has had time to evolve in strange and unusual ways, resulting in more unique wildlife than possibly any other island on the planet.
Next up is Borneo, the third largest island on Earth, which may appear at first to be a lush paradise but its harsh landscape makes it a struggle for life to survive. These challenges are the secret to Borneo hosting a greater diversity of wildlife than almost any other island.
The last episode is an outsider’s
look at the most remote island chain on Earth, our own Island home of Hawai‘i. The program looks at how the Islands are a sanctuary for the wildlife that has reached our tropical shores. Learn how these animals, including invasive species, have developed and adapted to survive in their surroundings.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS SEPTEMBER 2020
“I’m a businessman who happens to be gay,” says Hula’s Bar and Lei Stand owner Jack Law.
Growing up in Detroit, Michigan, Law moved to O‘ahu in 1966 to attend the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. But school was short-lived once Law says he discovered himself and opportunities to pursue his dream of working in the entertainment industry.
In 1974, Law and business partner Bob Magoon decided to open a nightclub on a piece of property in Waikīkī owned by the Magoon family. According to Law, “I said, ‘Bob, we don’t know anything about the bar business.’ He says, ‘Oh, how hard could it be?’” More than four decades later, Hula’s is still standing. Many may remember the original location on Kūhiō Avenue with its iconic banyan tree. The bar has since moved towards the Diamond Head end of Waikīkī.
Law is also an advocate for civil rights for the LGBTQ community. He was a founding member of the Life Foundation, a nonprofit organization that was one of Hawai‘i’s and the country’s first programs focusing on HIV/AIDS. He also created the Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival which celebrated its 31st anniversary this year by going virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

PBS HAWAI‘I PRESENTSShinnyo Lantern Floating Hawai‘i 2020Thursday, September 3 at 9:00 pm
On every Memorial Day since 1999, the international Buddhist community Shinnyo-en has officiated Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawai‘i, a ceremony to honor those who laid a foundation for our lives. At the close of the ceremony, thousands of lanterns are floated on the water, each carrying messages of gratitude, remembrance and love.
In 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawai‘i could not take place in its traditional form of a peaceful gathering of 50,000 people on Ala Moana Beach in Honolulu.
During this time of pain and suffering, messages of gratitude, love, hope and courage are more important than ever. This program turns the spotlight on stories that convey these feelings, along with a personal message of hope, peace and healing from Her Holiness, Shinso Ito, Head of Shinnyo-en.
