Reed Dunne is a philosopherand a tinkerer. He tinkers with hisown thoughts and converts theminto philosophies. But the IslandTimes Father of the Year doesn't seehimself that way. His self-descrip-tion says a lot about his sense ofhumor. "You could say that I've be-come an unabashed, unapologetic, family geek in my doddering old ageand I am perfectly happy about it.Reed is 45-years-old.

He grew up in Mobile, receivedhis undergrad degree from TulaneUniversity and a Master's in mathfrom the University of West Florida. He joined the Navy and went toflight school in Pensacola followingTulane. His first assignment wasright back in Pensacola. He servedon active duty for ten years beforehe became a Delta Airlines pilot. Hewas recalled twice to active duty andboth times ended up at WhitingField. For someone who is absolutelycrazy about Pensacola, that was amiraculous assignment.

He met his wife Mary while hewas instructing at Whiting in 1988."We have lived in Pensacola since1993 with the exception of one yearin 1996 when I was on the USS En-terprise. Mary then said, 'Do what-ever you want, but we're living herein Pensacola No place else.'"

Reed was, and still is, an ath-lete. He began a competitive swim-ming career when he was nine, car-ried on in college, reaching nationallevel meets. He stopped swimmingfor ten years, but began trainingagain in 1995 when he swam in theMasters Nationals in Ft. Lauderdale. He goes to the Masters event everyother year or so, mostly he says, tostay in touch with 30 or 40 friendshe competed against years ago.

Philosophical Swim Champ Makes Splash With His KidsSwimming is still in the family

when his son, fourteen-year-old PJcompetes. He says his dad is a greatmotivator and he does not evenflinch when his father dives in thepool at practice and keeps up withthe age group swimmers as long ashe can.

Reed's flying job takes himaway from his family ten to twelvenights per month. But when he'shome, he devotes one hundred per-cent to his family.

"I make breakfasts, lunches anddinners," he said. "I get to do carpooling. I see volleyball, soccer, soft-ball and lacrosse games. I've been achaperone on virtually every fieldtrip the kids have made."

And, then, he casually adds,"I've been teaching for a couple ofhours a week at the Beach School."

When PJ was in kindergarten, the teacher asked him to come teachmath. He jumped at the chance. Sincethen he has taught PJ's and Sage'sclasses for six years and he has justcompleted his fourth year withShelby's class. She will be in the fifthgrade at the Beach School next fall.

"I've gotten a lot more out ofthe involvement with all these kidsthan I have ever been able to give,"he said. "but still I try."

Reed recalls one of the verybest days of his life was the day hemet his daughter Sage, now 12-years-old. He had been deployedwhen she was born and was six-months-old when he first greeted herafter leaving the USS Enterprise. Shethrew up on his dress blues. She al-ways said that was her way of pay-back for him not being home whenshe was born.

Reed's children are extremelyproud of their father's culinary skills.

From baking Triple Chocolate YumYum cookies to preparing Indian andThai food, they all agreed that theirdad is the best chef.

Reed's hamburgers are good, too, but his dad's may hold the edgethere. However, Sage settled thequestion diplomatically. "I think it'sa tie," she said.

Reed's service to his communityalso comes through the BeachSchool where he has served on theBoard since it was formed for theopening of the Charter School.

"Shelby has one more year togo at the Beach School," he said."And then I will officially call it quitsand resign from the Board. My as-sociation with the school has beena blast."

Christmas morning in the Dunnehousehold is a real adventure whenthe Treasure Hunt gets underway.Reed hides their gifts and leavesthem a clue in the form of a brainteaser which, when solved, will leadthem to their gift.

"It took the kids an hour to

solve the clues last year," Reed said."I haven't begun working on thisyear's hunt, but I'm thinking aboutit."

Reed attributes much of hissuccess in parenting to his Dad, sev-enty-year-old Larry Dunne.

"My brothers and I talk about'Padreisms' when we get togethernow," Reed says. "We are all fathers, and we laugh about how stern hewas and often quote his sayings toget us to do what he wanted.

"Bottom line is that my child-hood through adulthood has beeneasy. I hope my kids are as well pre-pared for life as I was," he said.

Joyous traditions fill the Dunnekids' days. Father's Day is a realhoot. For fourteen years, Mary hastaken Reed to Hooters for Father'sDay. She usually takes the table be-neath the sign that says, "Caution:Blondes Thinking."

Reed says that's a bit of ironysince Mary is a former helicopterpilot and his blonde wife majored inchemistry at the United State Naval

Academy. Sage and Shelby, too, arepretty sharp blondes, he adds.

And what about those philoso-phies we mentioned in the beginningof Reed's story.

We hope you have noticed afew already, but here is one of Reed'sfinal messages; he tinkered with histhoughts long and hard for this one.

He said, "I hope my childrenwould pick up the notion that theyshould work hard, have concretegoals, challenge themselves regu-larly, treat others with respect andcherish all things family. I don't knowwhether they have learned it yet. Ithink they are beginning to get it. Iguess I'll know for sure when theyhave children of their own."

What a tall philosophical orderfrom a father who has walked thewalk and talked the talk.

The Father of the Year, the un-abashed, unapologetic family geek, has no more time to spread goodnews. He's on his way to spend timeon the Beach. With Mary and histhree children. Who else?

Gaetz Meets Hundreds of Constituents in Northwest Florida

At the Flounder’s Luncheon: Nan Harper, Jim Cox, Ed Guernsey,Jeff Elbert, Beverly Boswell, Karen Cook, Jamie Bristow, FredGant, Senator Don Gaetz, Tammy Bohannon and Buck Lee.

Senator Don Gaetz spent all dayduring his Neighborhood Day June 4listening to his constituents in North-west Florida.

He skillfully parceled out his in-terested parties by arranging meet-ings separately, with the PensacolaBeach Elementary School teachers, staff and parents coming first. Heawarded a letter of commendation tothe School for their ongoing academicexcellence.

He delivered a short speech atthe Beach Woman's Club and thenwent on to meet with the boards andexecutive directors of the Santa RosaIsland Authority and the Beach Cham-ber of Commerce.

The luncheon meeting tookplace at Flounder's where he touchedon many issues, including consoli-dated government.

"It is my understanding thatconsolidation has failed before," hesaid. "But it will be put to a vote again. The citizens of Escambia Country willhave to approve it."

Regarding the future of theSRIA, the Senator said. "As for theSRIA, again, I would only do what

the citizens are telling me to do. Theremust be a clear message that you wantchange."

Senator Gaetz told the group thathe definitelywould not run forGovernor. "I amstill trying to learnhow to do thisjob," he said.

He stressedthe need to pro-tect the area's mili-tary bases at thefederal level.

When NanHarper, co-ownerof Island Realtyasked him whatthe businesses on Pensacola Beachcould do to help with his initiativeshe said, "Bring me your concerns.Meet with me on a timely basis. I ap-preciate your straightforwardness."

After attending two afternoonmeetings in Pensacola, Senator Gaetzreturned to the Beach to meet withresidents. The Beach citizens spoketo him on a variety of issues includ-ing taxes and insurance..

Governor Charlie Crist signed abill on June 4, which Gaetz sponsored, that levels the playing field betweentaxpayers and the property appraiser.

Before this became law it wasassumed the property appraiser wascorrect in any legal challenge.

"This is not how this countrydoes things. I sponsored the legisla-tion that changes that presumption,so the taxpayer has equal footing withthe tax taker," Gaetz said.

Senator Gaetz's district is fromPerdido Key to Panama City Beachalong the coastline.

Gardening is another gardenvariety task (pun intended) at whichI am abysmally inefficient. The rea-son I am writing about gardening isthat I have discovered a way to cir-cumvent my brown thumb. First, youmust have a handy husband andsecondly, youmust have anAero-Garden. Ifyou lack either ofthese essentialparticipants, for-get it and go backto growing toma-toes outdoorswhere the birdscan eat them asfast as they ripen.

Most of youknow what a handy husband is, butdo you know what an Aero-Gardenis?

A sixteen page manual comeswith the apparatus, and deliversstep-by-step instructions for awhole lot of assembly required. Thisis where the handy husband shines.I wouldn't even continue reading themanual when I ran into such quotesas "Remove Biodomes - Whenplants appear through hole in seedpod label remove Biodomes anddiscard or recycle. Note: Never re-

move seed pod labels."There are eleven pages of in-

structions covering the planting ofyour garden in little seed pods, ad-justing the light, filling the base withwater, and watching the gardengrow.

The guidealso includespages and pagesof notes in Frenchand Spanish.

Are youready? Frank filledthe water com-partment with fil-tered water. He didnot use well orsoftened water, following the

guidelines offered. He then placedthe pods which contained rosemary, two kinds of basil, dill, parsley andthyme in the little holes provided. He then set the electric light whichhad the same intensity as one usedin interrogating prisoners of war.Fortunately, he finally figured outhow to set the time so the light wentto bed at the same time we did and itdidn't get up in the morning until wewere awake drinking our coffee.

Within a day or two the lidscame off the pods and the growing

began. It grew and grew. Think Jackand the Beanstock. We raised thehood to the highest point and stillthe basic plants kept bumping intoit. Frank finally said, "I am going toreplant all this stuff outside. It's likea jungle."

I was truly sorry to see it all goto the back balcony. It had beensuch a wonderful experience to stepover to the kitchen counter andpinch off all the herbs I wanted forsoups and salads and every-thing.

Now, we have lots ofherbs to choose from, andour Aero-Garden is empty. What do we do next? Weordered seed pods which willproduce cherry tomatoes. Allseed pods are priced at$14.95 to $19.95. Who knowsif this is a bargain? The herbswere. We'll wait until the to-matoes arrive to tell.

Now, we are also in a waitingmode because of an addition to ourAero-Garden. My daughter, Candy, sent us the first one for Christmas

and we liked it so much she sent asecond one for Mother's Day. Thesecond one was an appealing rep-lica of a large ladybug and had flow-ers in the pods. We planted themwhile we wait for the tomato seedsto arrive. So, we are now the proudowners of Aero-Garden 6 and Aero-Garden 3.

There are eleven styles ofAero-Gardens with prices rangingupwards as they have additional fea-

tures. The mostexpensive oneis designed forthe SeriousGardener.

We emailphotos toCandy from timeto time so shecan see howwell we are do-ing with our gar-dening. We now

also own their cookbook, devotedentirely to herbal recipes, but we havenot yet succumbed to the pitch to buyfifteen listed accessories including a

Mezzaluna Herb Chopper and board.According to the blurb, "You willnever want to go back to choppingherbs with a flat knife. The comfort-able grip and rocking motion makequick work of herb preparation."

Sometimes I just pull the herbsapart with my fingers, obviously a"no-no!" They do have some stan-dard stuff for sale like miniature gar-den shears and a fresh herb andvinaigrette and marinade maker.

I won't be able to tell you whereyou can find a handy husband, butI can tell you how to get your veryown Aero-Garden. Email me [email protected].

You will notice that I refer to"us" and "we" in this rather com-plex growing system. I'm the one whogreets the plants every morning withlove talk and a kiss. And I'm the onewho tucks them in at night. I knowthese gestures have a profound ef-fect on the size and efficiency ofthese delightful plants. I'll let youknow for sure when the millions ofcherry tomatoes are weighing downthe seed pod containers.

The answer is Sundeck Saloonand the owners were Les and JoyAnderson. "Oh, those were thedays," Kathryn emailed.

She aspires to sit as a knight atthe Round Table and has taken herfirst step in that direction. She getsthe coveted t-shirt. (Note: when JimRandol opened the café in the Sand-spur Republic before Les and Joyowned it, he called it the SundeckSaloon and Sidewalk Café. That wastoo much for Beach folks to handle. They shortened the name to theSundeck Saloon.)

After months of discussionsand numerous twists and turns, theSanta Rosa Island Authority took itsfirst real step toward the proposalto generate a dramatic makeover ofthe Beach's core area. The Ad Hoccommittee met on Wednesday, June10 and selected five firms out of sev-enteen contenders to make presen-tations. Members of the Ad Hoccommittee are SRIA board membersFred Gant, chairman; Dave Pavlockand Vernon Prather; and Portofinodeveloper Robert Rinke. Jim Cox,president of the Pensacola BeachAdvocates, sits with the committeeand offers input, but does not vote.

Representatives of firms chosento make a thirty minute presenta-tions on Tuesday, July 7 and thetimes at which they will appear are:• Sasaki Associates, 9 a.m.• EDSA, 10 a.m.

And Then There Were Five• Wallace, Roberts, and Todd, 11 a.m.• Valley Crest Design Group, 1:30 p.m.• Dougherty Architecture, 2:30 p.m.

Time selection was made byrandom drawing.

Discussion followed on theenormity of the parameters sur-rounding the project. The Commit-tee again reinforced their desire tosolve traffic and parking problemsand to find safety for pedestrianstrying to cross island streets.

Baskerville Donovan engineerJim Waite told the group, "Typically, you do not need to be too specific. These firms will do their homework. You should give them a broad cat-egory of problems and ask them whattheir approach would be. In otherwords, ask them how they would fixthe problems."

Dave Pavlock added, "We

should ask them about their strate-gies and concepts. This is a barrierisland, basically, a one lane bowlingalley."

The Ad Hoc committee's recom-mendation of five presenting firmswas accepted unanimously at theSRIA's full board meeting, also onJune 10. Board members Ed Guern-sey and Tammy Bohannon both re-viewed the proposals and came tosimilar conclusions. Guernsey hadchosen four of the five finalists andBohannon had selected three.Wallace, Roberts and Todd was theonly firm who had votes from allmembers of the Ad Hoc committee. The firm, from Coral Gables, pre-pared a study of Pensacola Beachfifteen years ago.

The Ad Hoc Committee alsovoted unanimously to taskBaskerville Donovan engineers to

prepare a document regarding thecriteria for the presenters. The AdHoc committee will review the docu-ment at the next meeting on Wednes-day, June 17.

COFFEE LIQUER, ANYONE?If you are a fan of Kahlua, you are hardlyalone. Infact, this coffee-flavored liqueuris the leading brand of liqueur in this coun-try and the second most popular brand ofliqueur in the world. This product of Mexicoowes its rich flavor to coffee, of course, cane spirits, and a hint of vanilla, alongwith sugar, corn sweeteners, and secretingredients. It lends itself to such enor-mously popular mixed drinks as the Black/White Russian, Kahlua Mudslide, andSombrero cocktail in the 1950s helpedestablish the popularity of the liqueur andbegan the trend of pairing Kahlua withcold milk. It is also prized as a "secretingredient" in chocolate pastries.

HINT: Naturally, Kahlua and coffee makea great after-dinner drink.

Dad might enjoy a Black Russian orKahlua Mudslide. If he does, give him agift of Kahlua. At Beach Wines and Li-quors, Inc, we carry all your favorite li-quors. We also have the expertise to tellyou how to use them in your favoritemixed drinks. Please, come see us at 5Via de Luna or call 932-8850 with ques-tions.

Back in the days of the SandDollar Café, it was a well-docu-mented fact that Mother's Day wasone of our busiest days of the year(for local trade, anyway). Why? Nomystery there, I knew the reasonfrom the very beginning. Our won-derful beach dads (and Lord, wehave a lot and we love 'em all) con-sidered the Sand Dollar a perfectplace to honor mom with a wonder-ful breakfast cooked and served bysomeone else. And, why not? There was no cleanup involved, thefood was always great and the costwas certainly more friendly to Dad'shard working wallet.

So, here's the kicker, dads - ifyou took your wife to a casual beacheatery for Mother's Day, you mayfind yourself in a much fancier andmaybe more inland place on yourday. Not that you don't deserve it,of course, you certainly do. Just takemy advice: sit back, enjoy it anddon't even think of looking at thatcheck!

I never spend a Father's Daywithout remembering some prettyspecial dads. Way back, in the daysof the old (and original) Bobby D'sin the Sandspur Republic, my won-derful friend Andrea Brunt and I be-gan to share Father's Day together. We were both "Daddy's Girls," butwithout our fathers. It certainlyeased our hearts to share our memo-ries with each other. That's right, wonderful memories and quite anumber of toasts to our respectivedads were made each year. Oh, youknow those toasts became longerand louder as the day progresseduntil the walls of Bobby D's wereringing with the names of our dadsand the few patrons left were thank-ful that Father's Day only came oncea year!

Then one year, we were joinedby Paulette Provost. Turns out, she's another Daddy's Girl and sowe were then three. Probably to thedismay of patrons and bartendersalike, we continued to share Father'sDay together for many years. Butthe best of those years was the daywe ended up together in Andrea'shome. Each of us shared a very per-

sonal and private memory of our Dadthat we had never been willing toshare with anyone before. We hadeach held sacred and guarded ourprecious memory until this day whenit became a gift that each gave tothe other.

In recent years, Andrea Bruntpassed away, so we three Daddy'sGirls had become two. Now othergals have joined our ranks. We werethree again, then four until we've fi-nally ceased to even keep count, norcelebrate, nor offer toasts with thepassion of our youth. But I will neverforget these gifts of the heart, northese wonderful women who haveso generously shared them with me.

So, I ask dear readers, pleaselift your glasses just once on Father'sDay and share a toast to yours, mine, and the most wonderful, belovedand forever missed daddies fromDaddy's Girls…Jack East for AndreaBrunt; Louis Pierre Doucet forPaulette Provost; Ralph Reeves forCourtney Winstead; Stacy Jones forMarilyn LeNormand; Hoke Harris forme.

Now let's reward ourselveswith something delicious from thekitchen! This recipe comes fromDeb Friedman and there's no cook-ing involved. She prepared andserved this during Mardi Gras and Iswear, it's the best I've ever eaten!

The Santa Rosa Island Au-thority which has been thrust intoreal estate sales lately, voted toput one property it now owns onhold until the economy improvesand to go ahead and advertise thesecond property for sale. The de-cisions were made at their June 10meeting.

The SRIA had acquired theformer property leased by theCircle K on Via de Luna after themajor leaseholder, Noel Faddis, decided to return the parcel to theAuthority rather than try to de-velop it.

The second property isacross the street near the cornerof Via de Luna and Avenida 23. It

Odd Shaped Parcel For Sale By Owner - SRIA Starts Bid Processis the parcel which held the oldeastern end water tower.

Apparently, the odd shapedlot has dubious value, but theSRIA is planning to put it up forsale.

"Let's put it up for bids andsee if we can get some takers," EdGuernsey motioned. The motionpassed unanimously.

The contract extension for theFishing Pier came before the fullboard, but they could not agreeon allowing the 30 year extension,so the item went back to commit-tee for more study. Mike Pinzone, the Pier manager, needs an exten-sion in order to qualify for a loanto improve the building at the Pier.

"I am coming here because thepotential of this facility is not be-ing utilized. If I put a second flooron my building and bring the rev-enues up that means I would paymore to the SRIA and I might get apaycheck some day," he said.

"We are talking about a pre-mier piece of Pensacola Beach,"Vernon Prather said. "This is avery complicated issue. I do notknow how we can take a definitiveaction tonight. I would like to keeplooking at this."

Other Board members, TammyBohannon, Dave Pavlock and EdGuernsey agreed, so the matterwas returned to committee.

The Sandshaker leaseholderswho had requested a special spotfor a sign location were similarlyrebuffed, but ended in a differentdirection. The request will not goback to committee, but staff willbe asked to work with the lease-holders and bring a specific loca-tion for the sign at the next boardmeeting. The leaseholders werewarned that their present requestwould be in violation of the exist-ing sign ordinance.

The good news in theEngineer's Report was when Mike

Langston of Baskerville Donovan, told the Board the permits for therestoration and dredging projectsin Little Sabine Bay are almostcomplete. The bad news is thatonce they get the permit for therestoration that there is a twelvemonth deadline to complete theproject or lose the $375,000 grant.

"That seems like a lot of time,"Buck Lee, SRIA executive directorsaid. "But the pump comes fromGermany and that takes eightmonths to be manufactured anddelivered. It only takes a few daysfor the engineers to have it in-stalled, but the time limit is an im-portant element."

The dredging project permit-ting is complete except for the Fishand Wildlife permit which is ex-pected this month. The permitfrom the Florida Department ofEnvironmental Protection was ex-pected last week. The draft permitwill allow the work to proceed whilesubmerged land lease issues areresolved.

Maureen LaMar, executive di-rector of the Pensacola BeachChamber of Commerce, and man-ager of the Visitor's InformationCenter reported that a total of 2194visitors went through the Centerin May. The most visitors camefrom Florida, Texas, Louisiana,

Georgia, Illinois and Tennessee. The staff mailed 144 visitor'sguides and received 479 phonecalls.

Ellis Bullock of EW BullockAssociates, the SRIA's advertis-ing agency, reported that he is al-locating the $110,000 budget asfollows: $18,000 for website andvisitor's guide ads; $18,000 forGoogle and Yahoo and to developFacebook and Twitter pages;$14,000 to promote beach concertseries and Blue Angels; and $7,700for public relations.

"Tourism figures reflect thattourism is down nationally, Floridais down 5 percent, but the Pan-handle is fairing far better than therest of the state for room demand,"Bullock said.

The Board got some advertis-ing from MediaCom when itreached an agreement in the endof the meeting to allow MediaComto have an area at Bands on theBeach, use their logo in print ads,and to park their vehicle in the noparking lane during concerts. Inreturn the Authority will receive2720 commercials.

The next meeting of the Is-land Authority will be June 24 at 5p.m. at 1 Via de Luna. All meetingsare open to the public.

CAT’sMy dad, the Colonel

Hello humans. Many of youknow me through the column,“The Lizzard’s Tongue” and thehorrific things Human Lady writesabout me. Please don’t believe aword she types. She is just jeal-ous that my nails are long, mylashes lush, my perfectly streakedhair never needs touching up, andeveryone loves my Buddha belly. But enough about me – ooh I can’tbelieve I thought that – must betoo much cat nip before 5 p.m.Anyway this column is about mydad, the Colonel. Or as I like tocall him, St. Francis of the MarineCorps.

Did you know it was 21 yearsago that as a young Second Lieu-tenant he jumped off the PensacolaBay Bridge to save a dog’s life? Andwhile he was a First Lieutenant inFlight School stationed at WhitingField that he went Rambo and res-cued a dog who was being mis-treated by her owners and found hera good home in Navarre. Or that asa Captain living in Quantico, Vir-ginia, he took in a lost puppy that henamed House Guest and planned onkeeping him, but his “dawg” Charliewas not as hospitable. As a Majoronboard MCAS Camp Pendleton,he became a father to the Kid. Or

during his last month as a Lieuten-ant Colonel in Pax River, he said Icould be part of the family if hecould just sleep in a little longer. And, that just last weekend as a fullbird Colonel, he gently coaxed twoblack snakes from our neighbor’shouse with a long stick and a bucketwhile the other human men had rakesand shovels? He is my hero and ani-mals from the East to the Westcoasts, from the Canadian and Mexi-can borders salute him.

But the Colonel is even morethan St. Francis of the Marine Corpsto me.

I don’t really know how old Iam in your human years, but by theway I act I would say I am a typicalteenage girl. I like to sleep in so Ican talk all night to Thug Catthrough the sliding glass door usinglanguage that would make even thetoughest Marine cringe. None of thisbehavior seems to bother the Colo-nel. It drives Human Lady nuts andthe Kid complains about the noise Imake a 0200 hours. Not so with theColonel. He just throws a clean, fluffy towel over me. Picks me upand carries me upstairs to bed whereI proceed to kneed his pectoralmuscles while he tries to go back tosleep. He never shushes me or

doesn’t even consider kicking me offthe bed like the occupier of the rightside does.

He is so smart, too. He alwaysreads the “Pet Doctor” column in theWashington Post. So while HumanLady bought me an automated dryfood feeder, the Colonel gives meorganic wet food on a crystal plateevery morning he is home. I do hateit when he travels because HumanLady tries to tell me that the vet saysI should only be eating dry food. Ican’t believe she would even beginto question the Colonel’s wisdomand side with the vet. Oh meow, people!

Finally the Colonel alwaystakes that extra step to do things thecorrect way. It may have been MaryPoppins who said just a spoon fullof sugar makes the medicine godown, but it’s the Colonel whoknows that a shoulder and hip mas-sage makes the flea repellent do itsjob that much better and prevents mefrom licking it before it’s dried. Hetruly is the best.

So here’s to my dad, the Colo-nel. In lieu of meowing HappyFather’s Day, I give him and all thedads a four paw salute and a lickwith my sandpaper tongue.

Until next time...

Father’s Day is a wonderfultime to say a special thanks to ourfathers for their contributions toour lives, or if they are deceased,to remember those same contribu-tions. As I look around at myfriends and acquaintances, I seeso many positive qualities: a fa-ther who is quiet-spoken, firm, andvery supportive of his children;another one who is loud, bossy, direct, and very supportive of hischildren; another who chooses hiswords carefully, is quite an intro-vert, doesn’t make many demands, but is very supportive of his chil-dren. Some of those fathers travel, but make the most of their timewhen home; others are home allthe time, and are able to attend theactivities of their children.

There is no one mold intowhich fathers can be placed, butthere is one factor that causeschildren to appreciate their fa-thers, and that is fathers who arevery supportive of their children.

That support is shown in var-ied ways. "Hi, Mom," is what wegenerally see when televisioncameras pan athletes in profes-sional sports, but admiration forfathers cannot be minimized. Twoof the greatest athletes of our time,Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, were never bashful about express-ing appreciation for their fathers.

That same attitude is held bymany of us as we recall the man-ner in which our fathers helped usto grow and mature and to becomethe persons we are today.

We don’t have to declare thatour fathers were perfect - fewwould believe us anyway! - but thesentiment that comes to mind aswe near this Father’s Day, is theoverwhelming support that wasgiven, and given without reserva-

tion.I remember the opening lines

of a tribute by Georgia Harknessto her father, "A giant pine, mag-nificent and old, stood staunchagainst the sky...." Rememberingcan be a great source of satisfac-tion, and a motivator to make ev-ery effort to fulfill, not our father’sexpectations, but the best ofwhich we are capable.

Happy Father’s Day!

Normally, I would not write anarticle about World War II, but thisis so important that I would be re-miss if I did nothing. I am going totell you the ending first, because ithas great significance. While I wasproud that our former Vice President,Al Gore who received the NobelPeace Prize, had I known then, whatI know now, I would have thoughtdifferently. I think you will under-stand as you read on.

Irene Sendler (Polish name IreneSendlerowa nee Kruyzanowska) wasnominated for the Nobel Peace Prizein 2007. Who had heard of her? What had she done that was so sig-nificant to deserve that honor?

She was a Polish Catholic so-cial worker who served in the Pol-ish underground to protect andhide the Jews during WWII. InDecember 1942 Zegota was cre-ated as a council to aid Jews. Irene, known as Jolanta (her undercovername), headed the children's sec-tion of this underground move-ment.

She was allowed entry intothe Warsaw ghetto due to her em-ployment within the social welfaredepartment. Her official mission wasto check for signs of typhus whichthe Nazis feared would spread out-side the ghetto. What she was re-ally doing was smuggling childrenand babies from the ghetto - one at

a time. It was amazing how she gotthem out - carrying them in boxes, suitcases and trolleys/trunks.

Then Sendler told the Nazis thata typhus outbreak had occurred andshe smuggled the children and ba-bies out in ambulances and trams/carriages disguising them as pack-ages. Her plan was to reunite thechildren with their parents after thewar ended. The children were allgiven new names when they weredelivered to Polish families and vari-ous Catholic orphanages. She keptdetailed lists of old and new nameshidden in jars.

The Gestapo finally caught herin 1943. She was arrested and sen-tenced to death. The Nazis torturedher, breaking both her legs. TheZegota organization bribed herguards who ended up dumping herin the forest with her wounds. Shewas listed as dead. The under-ground found her and hid her dur-ing the remainder of the war.

Sendler saved 2,500 Jewishchildren.

I think about this. How many ofus would risk our lives, knowing ifcaptured we would be tortured orexecuted or both? I think IreneSendler should have received theNobel Peace Prize in 2007. She diedin May 2008 in Warsaw, Poland - anunknown hero to many includingmyself.

Joy!Comfort and Joy this week, is

going to focus on the joy part. I havedecided that it would do us all somegood, and I hope you agree.

My wonderful friend and pas-tor, Chuch Randle, spoke last weekabout the difference between hap-piness and joy. I was moved by hissermon, and have shared thethoughts he presented with others.I think it would be wonderful toshare with you, and I hope you willdo the same.

Happiness, such a personalfeeling, and, according to our per-sonal circumstances, happiness issomething that can ebb with the tide.

Joy, on the other hand, is anemotion and a choice in life that cantravel unfazed. Joy for life, joy inothers, joy in nature, joy in spirit, joy in celebration and joy in under-standing and expressing sorrow.

It's all up to each of us to de-cide to live a life full of joy, or not.

Wow. Pretty powerful. Joy!Exultant gladness. What an expres-sion!

I think that's how I feel each andevery time I see this magnificentparadise we live in. Some call itPensacola Beach, I call it "JoyfulLiving.”

The white sand, the blue sky, thesparkling water, the lights shimmer-ing in the evening after the mostmagnificent sunsets on Earth.

And, all free to each toenjoy…there's that word again: joy!

Yes, those of us who live herepay taxes; who buy here, pay more

taxes; deal with the traffic and thetourists, share with the turtles andthe park rangers, but still, all we haveto do is walk, run, bike, or drive rightto the beach and the Gulf of Mexicoto experience it: Joy.

As I watch the economicschange and affect those I know andmeet, I have realized that this eco-nomic crisis has affected the “joy”in some people’s lives, and it's timewe do something about it.

How about it? Would you par-ticipate in an effort to increase thejoy in your life and others you meet? Here are some simple things to do:• Love yourself, and those aroundyou.• Decide that you will live a joyfullife, and you will.• Create the most comfortable nestyou can for you and those you careabout. And, enjoy it daily!• Insulate yourselves as much as youcan so that your daily joy stays in-tact, and share it with as manypeople as you can.• Ask each person you meet to dothe same.• Speak only kind words.• Do something unexpectedly fun, kind, or generous for an unexpectingperson.• Love someone hard to love.• Sleep 8 hours every night, andmake sure children sleep 12 hours.• Take care of our Island and our en-vironment, after all, it's yours to en-joy and share.

Together, we can heal theworld, if you believe it, and prac-tice joyful living daily with yourselfand others.

It's Snapper sea-son and the Big Boats down at theMarina are bring in the booty everyevening. Great catches for all kindsof good eatin' are making their wayto the cleaning tables. Snapper,Tuna, King Macs, Grouper, Sharkand anything else that makes a mis-take can be had this month in theGulf waters.

I caught the Hog Wild unload-ing the other day after an all nighttrip, and man, the folks from theOutback Bait and Tackle Group thatbooked Capt. Ronnie were not dis-appointed. They brought home hun-dreds of pounds of top grade gro-ceries.

Inshore fishing has been hotalso with catches of Speckled Trout,Flounder and Redfish making theirway into the coolers and onto thetables.

I cruised out to the Ft. Pickenspier late in the evening on Saturday,June 6 with a big old moon shiningdown and had a blast jigging for flat-fish. I was lucky enough to witnessthe landing of a nice sized Black tipshark while I was there , but, the luckwas with the others as I was shutoutmyself. The trip was worth it. Theride and the scent of the saltwater inthe Pensacola Pass with the Light-house flashing at me under that Junemoon has been missing in my lifefor too long.

The fishing is great so bookyourself a trip with Capt. Ronnie orone of the other fine crews down atthe Beach Marina or take a ride toFt. Pickens with the Chase-N-Fins,Blue Marlin, Key Sailing or WhoCares. Do yourself a favor and takeyour Dad fishing. Happy Father'sDay, Dad ! I miss you.
