Hadith of the Prophet told to us by AbuDharr al-GhaffariSubject Hadith SourceAbuDharrbecomes MuslimVersion 1

Abdullah Ibn Abbas said: When the news of the advent of the Prophet reached AbuDharr, he said to his brother,

"Ride to this valley and bring me the news of this man who claims to be a Prophet receiving information from Heaven.

Listen to him and then come to me." His brother set out till he met the Prophet and listened to his speech and

returned to AbuDharr and said to him, "I have seen him exhorting people to virtues and his speech was not like

poetry." AbuDharr said, "You have not satisfied me as to what I wanted."So, he took some food and a water-skin full of water and set out till he reached Mecca, where he went to

the Kaba looking for the Prophet, whom he did not know, and he would not like to ask someone about him. So, a

portion of the night had passed when Ali saw him and realized that he was a stranger. He invited AbuDharr to follow

him (to his house), but neither of them asked the other about anything till it was morning, when he carried his

water-skin and food and went to the Kaba. He spent that day without being observed by the Prophet till it was night,

when he returned to his sleeping place.

Ali again passed by him and said, "Hasn't the man recognized his dwelling place yet?" So, Ali let him get up

and took him (to his house), but neither of them asked the other about anything, till it was the third day when Ali

had the same experience with him and AbuDharr again stayed with him.

Ali then asked, "Won't you tell me what has brought you here?" He replied, "If you promise and agree that

you will be my guide, then I will tell you." When Ali did, AbuDharr informed him (of his purpose). Ali said, "It is theTruth, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. So when the morning comes, follow me, and if I should perceive any

danger threatening you, I will give you a hint by pretending to go to the watercloset. But if I keep on walking, follow

me till you enter the place that I will enter." AbuDharr agreed and followed Ali till he entered the place of the

Prophet and AbuDharr entered with him. He then listened to the speech of the Prophet and embraced Islam on that

    very spot.

The Prophet said to him, "Go back to your people and inform them (of this religion) till you receive my

(further) orders." AbuDharr said, "By Him in Whose Hands my life is! I will proclaim my conversion to Islam publicly

amongst them (Meccas unbelievers)." He went out till he reached the Kaba and announced as loudly as possible, "I

testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The

people then got up and beat him till they knocked him down. Al-Abbas came and threw himself over him (to protecthim) saying, -Woe to you! Don't you know that he is from Ghifar and that is the route of your merchants towards

Sham (Syria)?" Thus he saved him from them. AbuDharr did the same on the next day and the people beat him again

and Al-Abbas drew himself over him (as before).

    Bukhari4.724

Abu Jamra said: Abdullah ibn Abbas said to us, "Shall I tell you the story of AbuDharr's conversion to Islam?" We

said, "Yes." He said, AbuDharr said: I was a man from the tribe of Ghifar. We heard that a man had appeared in

Mecca, claiming to be a Prophet. I said to my brother, Go to that man and talk to him and bring me his news.' He set

out, met him and returned. I asked him, 'What is the news with you?' He said, 'By Allah, I saw a man enjoining what

is good and forbidding what is evil.' I said to him, 'You have not satisfied me with this little information.' So, I took

a waterskin and a stick and proceeded towards Mecca. I did not know him (the Prophet), nor did I want to ask anyone

about him. I kept on drinking Zam-zam water and staying near the Kaba. Then Ali passed by me and said, 'It seems

you are a stranger?' I said, 'Yes.' He proceeded to his house and I accompanied him. Neither did he ask me anything,

    Bukhari4.725

    2/26

nor did I tell him anything.

Next morning I went to the Kaba to ask about the Prophet but no one told me anything about him. Ali passed

by me again and asked, 'Hasn't the man recognized his dwelling place yet?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Come along with

me.' He asked me, 'What is your business? What has brought you to this town?' I said to him, 'If you keep my

secret, I will tell you.' He said, 'I will.' So I said to him, 'We have heard that a person has appeared here, claiming

to be a Prophet. I sent my brother to speak to him and when he returned, he did not bring a satisfactory report, so I

thought I should meet him personally.' Ali said to him, 'You have reached your goal. I am going to him just now, so

follow me, and wherever I enter, enter after me. If I should see someone who may cause you trouble, I will stand

near a wall pretending to mend my shoes (as a warning), and you should go (another direction) then.'

Ali proceeded and I accompanied him till he entered a place, and I entered with him to the Prophet to whom

I said, 'Present (the principles of) Islam to me.' When he did, I embraced Islam immediately. He said to me, 'O

AbuDharr! Keep your conversion a secret and return to your town; and when you hear of our victory, return to us.' I

said, 'By Him Who has sent you with the Truth, I will announce my conversion to Islam publicly amongst them (the

    Meccans),'

AbuDharr then went to the Kaba, where some people from Quraish were present, and said, 'O folk of

Quraish! I testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is Allah's

Slave and His Messenger.' (Hearing that) the Quraishi men said, 'Get this Sabi (muslim)!' They got up and beat me

nearly to death. Al-Abbas saw me and threw himself over me to protect me. He then faced them and said, 'Woe toyou! You want to kill a man from the tribe of Ghifar, even though your trade and your communications go through the

territory of Ghifar?' They then left me. The next morning I returned and said the same as I had said on the day

before. They again said, 'Get this Sabi!' I was treated in the same way as on the previous day, and again Al-Abbas

found me and threw himself over me to protect me and told them the same as he had said the day before.' So, that

was the conversion of AbuDharr to Islam."

Abdullah Ibn Abbas said: When AbuDharr received the news of the arrival of a prophet he said to his brother, "Ride

to this valley (of Mecca) and try to find out the truth of the person who claims to be a prophet who is informed of

the news of Heaven. Listen to what he says and come back and tell me." So his brother set out and came to the

Prophet and listened to some of his talks, and returned to AbuDharr and said to him, "I have seen him enjoining

virtuous behavior and saying something that is not poetry." AbuDharr said, "You have not satisfied me as to what I

    wanted."

He then took his journey-food and carried a water-skin of his, containing some water till be reached Mecca.

He went to the Kaba and searched for the Prophet and though he did not know him, he hated to ask anybody about

him. When a part of the night had passed away, Ali saw him and knew that he was a stranger. So when AbuDharr saw

Ali, he followed him, and none of them asked each other about anything, and when it was dawn, AbuDharr took his

journey-food and his water-skin to the Kaba and stayed there all the day long without being perceived by the

Prophet, and when it was evening, he came back to his place of rest. Ali passed by him and said, "Does the man not

known his dwelling place yet?" So Ali woke him up and took him with him and none of them spoke to the other about

    anything.

When it was the third day. Ali did the same and AbuDharr stayed with him. Then Ali said, "Will you tell me

what has brought you here?" AbuDharr said, "If you give me a firm promise that you will guide me, then I will tell

you." 'Ali promised him, and he informed 'Ali about the matter. 'Ali said, "It is true, and he is the Messenger of

Allah. Next morning when you get up, come with me, and if I see any danger for you, I will stop as if to pass water,

but if I keep going, follow me and enter the place which I will enter." AbuDharr did so, and followed Ali till he

entered the place of the Prophet, and AbuDharr went in with him, AbuDharr listened to some of the Prophet's talks

and embraced Islam on the spot. The Prophet said to him, "Go back to your people and inform them (about Islam) till

you receive my order." AbuDharr said, "By Him in Whose Hand my life is, I will proclaim my conversion loudly amongst

them (Meccans)." So he went out, and when he reached the mosque, he said as loudly as possible, "I bear witness

that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The people got up

and beat him painfully. Then Al-Abbas came and knelt over him and said, "Woe to you! Don't you know that this man

belongs to the tribe of Ghifar and your trade to Sham is through their way?" So he rescued him from them.

AbuDharr did it again the next day. They beat him and took vengeance on him and again Al-Abbas knelt over him.

    AbuDharrbecomes Muslimversion 2

Abdullah ibn as-Samit reported that AbuDharr said: We set out from our tribe Ghifar who look upon the prohibited

months as permissible months (to fight). My brother Unays, our mother and I stayed with our maternal uncle who

treated us well. The men of his tribe felt jealous and they said (to my uncle): When you are away from your house,

Unays commits adultery with your wife. Our uncle came and he accused us about which he had been informed. I said:

You have undone the good you did to us. We cannot stay with you after this. We came to our camels and loaded (our)

luggage. Our uncle began to weep, covering himself with (a piece of) cloth. We proceeded until we encamped by theside of Mecca. Unays cast lot on the camels (we had) and an equal number (above that). They both went to a Kahin

and he made Unays win and Unays came with our camels and an equal number along with them.

He (AbuDharr) said: My nephew, I used to observe prayer three years before my meeting with Allah's

Messenger. I asked: To whom did you say your prayer? He said: To Allah. I asked: In which direction did you

turn your face (for observing prayer)? He said: I used to turn my face as Allah has directed me to turn my face. I

used to observe the night prayer towards the end of night and I fell down in prostration like a mantle until the sun

    rose over me.

He (AbuDharr) said: Unays said: I have work in Mecca, so you had better stay here. Unays continued until

he came to Mecca and he came back to me late. I said: What did you do? He said: I met a person in Mecca who is

of your religion and he claims that verily it is Allah Who has sent him. I asked: What do the people say about him?

He said: They say that he is a poet or a Kahin or magician. Unays who was himself one of the poets said: I have

heard the words of a Kahin but his words are not like that at all. I also compared his words with the verses of poets

but such words cannot be uttered by any poet. By Allah, he is truthful and they are liars. Then I said: You stay

here while I go to see him.

He (AbuDharr) said: I came to Mecca and I selected an insignificant person from amongst them and asked

him: Where is he whom you call a Sabi? He pointed towards me, saying: He is Sabi. Thereupon the people of the

valley attacked me with sods and bows until I fell down unconscious. I stood up after regaining consciousness and I

found that I resembled a red idol. I went to the Zamzam well, washed blood from myself and drank water from it.

Listen, O son of my brother, I stayed there for thirty nights or days and there was no food for me but the water of

Zamzam. And I became so emaciated that there appeared wrinkles upon my stomach, yet I did not feel any hunger.

In those days the people of Mecca slept during the moonlit night and there was none to circumambulate the

House except two women who had been invoking the name of Isafa and Na'ilah (the two idols). They came to me while

on their circuit and I said: Marry one to the other, but they did not dissuade from their invocation. They came to

me and I said to them: Insert wood (in the idols' private parts). I said this to them in such plain words as I could

not express it in metaphorical terms. These women went away crying and saying: Had there been one amongst our

people (he would have taught a lesson to you for the obscene words you used for our idols). These women met Allah's

Messenger and AbuBakr who had also been coming down the hill. He asked them: What happened? They said: It is

Sabi, who has hidden himself between the Ka'bah and its curtain. He asked: What did he say to you? They said:

He uttered such words before us as we cannot express. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) came and he kissed

the Black Stone, circumambulated the House along with his companion and then observed prayer.

AbuDharr said: When he had finished his prayer, I was the first to greet him with the salutation of peace

and uttered (the words) in this way Allah's Messenger, may there be peace upon you. Thereupon he replied: May it

be upon you too, and the mercy of Allah. He then said: Who are you? I said: From the tribe of Ghifar. He praised

his hand and placed his finger on his forehead and I thought to myself: Perhaps he does not like my belonging to the

tribe of Ghifar. I attempted to catch hold of his hand but his friend, who knew about him more than I, dissuaded me

from doing so. He then lifted his head and asked: For how long have you been here? I said: I have been here for

the last thirty nights or days. He asked: Who has been feeding you? I said: There has been no food for me but

the water of Zamzam. I have grown so emaciated that there are wrinkles upon my stomach and I do not feel any

hunger. He said: 'It is blessed (water) and it also serves as food. Thereupon AbuBakr said: Allah's Messenger, letme serve as a host to him for tonight. Then Allah's Messenger proceeded forth, so did AbuBakr, and I went with

    them.

AbuBakr opened the door and then he brought for us the raisins of Ta'if and that was the first food which

I ate there. Then I stayed as long as I had to stay. I then came to Allah's Messenger and he said: I have been

shown the land abounding in trees and I think it must be that of Yathrib (that is the old name of Medina). You will be

a preacher to your people on my behalf. I hope Allah wi ll benefit them through you and He will reward you.

I back came to Unays and he asked: What did you do? I said: What I did is embrace Islam and testified

(to the prophethood of Allah's Messenger). He said: I have no aversion for your religion and I also embrace Islam

and testify (to the prophethood of Muhammad). Then both of us came to our mother and she said: I have no

aversion for your religion and I also embrace Islam and testify to the prophethood of Muhammad. We then loaded

our camels and came back to our tribe of Ghifar and half of the tribe embraced Islam and their chief was Ayma ibn

Rahadah Ghifari. He was their leader and half of the tribe said: We will embrace Islam when Allah's Messenger

(peace be upon him) would come to Medina, and when Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) came to Medina the

remaining half also embraced Islam. Then the tribe Aslam came to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) and said:

Allah's Messenger, we also embrace Islam like our brothers who have embraced Islam. And they also embraced

Islam. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Allah granted pardon to the tribe of Ghifar and Allah

saved (from destruction) the tribe of Aslam.

AbuDharr said: The Prophet said: Go to your people and say that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) says:

Ghifar (is a tribe) to whom Allah granted pardon, and Aslam (is the tribe to whom Allah granted safety.

My giving is speech and my punishment is speech.

My command to a thing when I want it is just to say to it `Be' and it comes into being.24 Hadith Qudsi

Version2AbuDharr said: The Messenger, Allah bless him and grant him peace, transmitted these words directly from the Most High:

O cherished servants, as I have made injustice unlawful for Me, so I have made it unlawful for you. Be not unjust.O servants, all of you are wandering astray except the ones whom I have guided. Ask Me to guide and I will guide you.

O servents, all of you are hungry except those whom I have fed. Ask Me to feed you and I will feed you.O servants, all of you are naked except those whom I have clothed, Ask Me to clothe you and I will clothe you.

O servants, indeed you are erring night and day, yet I forgive all offences. Ask Me to forgive and I will forgive you.O servants, although you may think you are doing harm to Me through your negative actions, no harm can reach Me.

Although you may imagine you are benefitting Me through your good deeds, these acts of yours cannot add the leastparticle of goodness to My own overflowing Goodness.

O servents, even if the entire spectrum of intellengent beings - from the first of you to the last of you, from human beingsto beings on subtle planes possessed the heart of the most evolved ones among you, this would add nothing to My Kingdom.

O servants, even if all intelligent beings, from the first to last, possessed the heart of the most rebellious ones among you, this would take nothing away from My Kingdom.O servants, if all intellengent beings, visible and invisible, gathered together and demanded the most sublime wishes from

Me and I granted every one of them, this would in no way diminish the treasures that are with Me, any more than a neddledipped in the ocean would decrease the ocean.

O servents, I take account of your deeds only according to their subtle inner intentions, and it is according to theseintentions that I will fully reward you.

O servants, those who see goodness all around them are opening their entire being to the praise of Allah. Those who findother than the good can blame only themselves.

AbuDharr said: The Prophet stated that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said:O My servants, I have made oppression unlawful for Me and unlawful for you, so do not oppress one another.

O My servants, all of you are astray except the one whom I guide, so seek guidance of Me and I will guide you.O My servants, all of you are hungry except the one whom I feed, so beg food of Me and I will feed you.

O My servants, all of you are naked except the one whom I have clothed, so beg clothes of Me and I will clothe you.O My servants, you commit error night and day and I am there to forgive your sins, so beg pardon of Me and I will grant it.

O My servants, even if the first amongst you, the last amongst you, the whole human race, and that of Jinns, all become asGod-conscious like the most pious heart of a single person amongst you, it will not add to My Power.

O My servants, even if the first amongst you, the last amongst you, the whole human race, and that of Jinns, all become aswicked like the most wicked heart of a single person amongst you, it will cause no loss of My Power.

O My servants, even if the first amongst you, the last amongst you, the whole human race, and that of Jinns, all stand inone place and ask Me and I confer upon everyone what he asks for, it will not decrease what I have,

not even as much as what happens to the ocean by dipping a needle in it (the tiny amount of water that adheres to it).O My servants, it is but your deeds, which I am recording for you, and then I shall reward you for.

The Prophet replied, Faith in Allah and jihad in His way. Then he asked which slave was the best to set free. The Prophet replied, The most valuable ones in terms of their price and utility to those who possess them.

Then he asked about what he should do when he found it impossible to do certain good deeds. The Prophet replied, Help one who has done you a favor, or do a favor for one who has not.

Finally he asked what he might do if he was unable to do even that. The Prophet, upon him be peace, replied, Give people respite from evil, for to do so is a form of charity that you give to yourself.

AbuDharrswarning toMuawiya aboutwealth and therights of the poor

It was transmitted to me in writing by al-Sari, stating that Shuayb had personally recited it to him (haddathahu) on theauthority of Sayf from Atiyyah who heard it from Yazid al Faqasi:

When Ibn al Sawda (Abdullah ibn Saba) came to Syria he met AbuDharr and said, AbuDharr are you notastonished at Muawiya for saying, The public money is Gods property Truly, everything belongs to God. It is as if

(Muawiya) intends to seize it (for himself) to the exclusion of the Muslims and to erase the Muslims names (from the

registers of those who are supposed to receive a share).AbuDharr came to Muawiyah: What leads you to use the term Gods property for the public money of the Muslims?Muawiya responded: God be merciful to you, AbuDharr. Are we not Gods slaves, the public money His property, the

created world His creation, and public authority (al-amr) His authority?AbuDharr said: Do not use this expression. Indeed, I do not say that it does not belong to God, but I shall call it the

property of the Muslims. Ibn al Sawda came to AbuDarda, who said to him, Who are you? By God, I think you are a Jew! Then he came to

Ubadah ibn al-Samit, who brought him to Muawiya and said, By God, this is the man who provoked AbuDharr against you.

Now AbuDharr rose up in Syria and began saying, O men of wealth, show charity to the poor. To those who hoardup gold and silver and do not spend them in the way of Allah, announce to them a painful torment(9.34-35) He kept saying

these things until the poor were set aflame and forced the rich to do this (give to them), until the rich complained about

the behavior they were encountering from the people.

Muawiya wrote to Uthman: AbuDharr has become a problem for me, and his case has involved such-and such matters.

Uthman wrote back: Truly, dissension(rebellion) has protruded its snout and eyes and is poised to jump. Do not scrape thescab, but rather dispatch AbuDharr to me. Send a guide along with him, give them adequate provisions, and treat him

gently. Restrain the people and yourself as far as you can, for you will keep control of things only so long as you keepcontrol of yourself.

So Muawiya sent AbuDharr away accompanied by a guide. When he reached Medina and saw the homes (that hadbeen built at the foot of Sal hill on the outskirts of Medina) he said, Declare to the Medinese that they can suffer a

devastating attack and a terrible war. Then he entered Uthmans presence.Uthman said: AbuDharr, why are the Syrians complaining about the wounds inflicted by you?

AbuDharr informed him that it was improper to say, Gods property, nor was it proper for the rich to go after wealth.Uthman responded: AbuDharr, I must carry out my own obligations and take what is owed by the subjects (taxes) I cannot

force them to be ascetics (those who give up worldy things); rather I am required to call on them to follow what Godcommands and to follow the path of moderation.

AbuDharr said: Then permit me to leave, for Medina is no home for me.Uthman replied: And will you replace it with someplace worse?

AbuDharr said: The Messenger of Allah commanded me to leave when the built up area reach Sal Hill.Uthman replied: Well do as he commanded you.

So AbuDharr set out until he settled in al-Rabadha, and there he traced out a mosque. Uthman allocated to him a

AbuDharr said to Uthman: Dont be happy that the people refrain from doing bad deeds, until they strive to do gooddeeds. One who fulfills the zakat tax should not just limit himself to that. He should give until he treats neighbors and

brothers generously and brings benefit to all his family members too.Kab said: He who fulfills the divine command (fard) has done all that he must do.

AbuDharr got angry and said: You are the son of a Jewess (he was a jewish convert to Islam), what do you think you aredoing? Im going to teach you a lesson. and in anger raised his staff and struck Kab, (causing blood to come from his head).

admitted into Paradise where I found small (tents or) walls (made) of pearls and its earth was of musk."AbuDharr said to Allah's Messenger: What about the vessels of that Cistern? He said: By Him in Whose Hand is the life of

Muhammad, the vessels would outnumber the stars in the sky and its planets shining on a dark cloudless night. These wouldbe the vessels of Paradise. He who drinks out of it (the Cistern) would never feel thirsty. There would flow in it two spouts

from Paradise and he who would drink out of it would not feel thirsty; and the distance between its (two corners) is thatbetween Amman and Aylah, and its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey.

AbuDharr said: The truthful one whose word is believed told him that mankind would be assembled in three groups: oneriding with food and clothing, one being dragged on their faces by the angels who would assemble them for Hell, and one

walking and running. Allah would cast a calamity on riding-beasts so that none would remain, with the result that a man whohad a garden would be ready to give it for a saddled she-camel, but would be unable to get one.

AbuDharr said Allah's Messenger stated that Allah said, "O children of Adam, as long as you make dua only to Me, prayonly to Me, and place all your hope only in Me, I will forgive you whatever you have done, and I will not consider it any

further. O children of Adam, if your errors reached as high as the clouds in the sky, and yet you asked for My forgiveness,I would forgive you. O children of Adam, if you came to Me with as many sins as the earth could hold and yet would meet

Me without recognizing any other source of power, I would meet you with an equal amount of forgiveness."

AbuDharr said: Allah's Messenger said:I know the last of the inhabitants of Paradise to enter it and the last of the inhabitants of Hell to come out of it.

He is a man who would be brought on the Day of Resurrection and it will be said:Present his minor sins to him, and withhold from him his serious sins.

Then the minor sins would be placed before him, and it would be said:On such and such a day you did so and so and on such and such a day you did so and so. He would say: Yes.

It will not be possible for him to deny, for he would be afraid that his serious sins would also be presented. It would be said to him: In place of every evil deed you will have good deed!

He will say: My Lord! I have done things I do not see here.I indeed saw the Messenger of Allah laugh till you could see his front teeth.
