You’ll all know that the Hive is now developing apace, and we will start showing staff and students around the building next month. The Hive will open in July this year, and combine the best of our library and the public library. Students and staff will be able to find a space that suits their study needs from group work to individual silent research. Full wireless coverage and over 250 desk-top computers are available, with experienced staff on-hand to help and advise everyone on using the extensive digital and print resources. All of the texts will be moved from our library to the Hive during the week 11th-18th June, which is the latest practicable date possible prior to the opening of the building. Students will therefore be encouraged to take as many books as they need prior to that date, and loan periods will be extended to accommodate this. Plus, if students have taken out all out texts that’s a few less for us to have to move ourselves! We are prioritising tours for students representatives so they can have the opportunity to see the new building, ask lots of questions and then feedback to their peers. You’ll all know that the Hive is

now developing apace, and we will

start showing staff and students

around the building next month.

The Hive will open in July this year,

and combine the best of our

library and the public library.

Students and staff will be able to

find a space that suits their study

needs from group work to

individual silent research. Full

wireless coverage and over 250

desk-top computers are available,

with experienced staff on-hand to

help and advise everyone on using

the extensive digital and print

resources.

All of the texts will be moved from

our library to the Hive during the

week 11th-18th June, which is the

latest practicable date possible

prior to the opening of the

building. Students will therefore be

encouraged to take as many books

as they need prior to that date, and

loan periods will be extended to

accommodate this. Plus, if students

have taken out all out texts that’s a

few less for us to have to move

ourselves!

We are prioritising tours for

students representatives so they

can have the opportunity to see the

new building, ask lots of questions

and then feedback to their peers. If

you do have any questions

yourselves please don’t hesitate to

get in touch with us, and keep your

eyes peeled for more information

on the library in due course.

31st January, 2012 Volume 1 Issue 3

Welcome to 2012

in ILS! This year is

going to bring all

sorts of change

and challenges

for us in the

library service,

and no doubt for

you as well.

This edition of

the newsletter

focuses on our e-

resources, how to

access them, and

perhaps a few

hidden gems that

will be new to

you.

You might think every time you look at our library catalogue something has changed—

and you’d be right! Here’s a few things that just might come in handy...

‘Get It at UW’ has had a facelift!

E-books.

Resources

“we do also have

e-books in other

places”

What’s new?

We’ve now withdrawn

our older full-text

linking service (which

you may have known as

‘Get It at UW’) and

replaced it with a new

service ‘Get it from ILS’.

Our new linking service

is now installed so you

should notice these little

orange buttons popping

up all over our

databases. Clicking on a

‘Get it from ILS’ button

will try and link you

directly to full text if we

have it. If not, don’t

forget you can always

request a book or article

through inter-library

loan.

The other part of the

service is our A-Z e-

journals list. This used

to list all our journals in

both print and

electronic form. The

new service only

displays our electronic

journals, however it’s a

more easy and accurate

service, and students

much prefer using

online information, so

we think it’s an

improvement. You can

use the new A-Z of e-

journals by clicking on

the link from the

catalogue homepage

and you can search or

browse by title. Make

sure you spell it right

though otherwise you’ll

While most of our e-

books are on the

MyiLibrary platform at

present, we do also have

e-books in other places,

including some useful

psychology texts on

Oxford Scholarship

Online, which will

appear in Summon

results. We’ll also be

buying more books on a

new platform

‘DawsonEra’- so watch

out for those appearing

in your catalogue search

results.

We now subscribe to

‘Medicine and Science

in Sports and Exercise’

and ‘The Journal of

Strength and

Conditioning Research’

online, which is good

news. Don’t forget, any

journal article that is

accessed electronically

is considered an e-

journal article. We’re

always trying to expand

our e-journal collection,

so if you have any

suggestions for titles

just get in touch.

We are adding to our

e-resources all the time,

and the most recent

addition which might

come in handy for PE

and dance enthusiasts is

the full text journal

database ‘International

Bibliography of

Theatre & Dance’ which

includes journal titles

such as ‘Research in

Dance Education’.

Access the database

through the E-Resources

list, or through your

Summon searches.

come back with no

results.

Of course our print

journals are still in the

library for you to use

and you can check

which print journals we

have in stock by

searching our library

catalogue. Don’t forget,

Summon searches 97%

of our resources, both

print and electronic.

E-Journals. Even more E-!

If you’ve visited the sports

subject web pages recently

you’ll have noticed some

changes, specifically some

additions! There is now an

FAQs page which attempts

to give straightforward

answers to questions like

‘how do I access e-books?’

and ‘what is the restricted

loan collection?’

There is also a new page

of web links relevant to the

Olympics which have been

taken from the now

redundant Intute pages for

Social Sciences. I’ll be

adding more and more

You’ll notice our

e-resources list is linked

to under some different

guises these days—for

example from the

Summon homepage it’s

called “Search Individual

Library Databases

(Student Version)” - well

this is our attempt to say

what it is on the tin, but

of course our list of

e-resources includes

more than databases—

although we have lots of

those!

The list under sports

currently offers students

a range of full text and

index databases, as well

as links to professional

body websites such as

IMSPA, online resources

such as Anatomy TV,

and links to individual

subscriptions like

SportEx. To get the login

details for individual

subscriptions you just

have to ask at the

information point in the

library. We have

newspaper subscriptions

through Infotrac, and

Oxford Reference

Online for dictionaries

and encyclopedias.

If there are any links on

this list you have a

question about, or

anything you think is

missing do let me know—

I’m more than happy to

add in more resources.

Of course, most of these

resources are searchable

by Summon, so students

will be using them just by

doing a subject search in

Summon, which makes it

the best place to start,

but if students need any

help using individual

databases or resources

please don’t hesitate to

point them in my

direction.

resources to these pages

from the Intute links

which should help create a

set of links to reliable web

pages and resources

which students can refer

to and use with

confidence.

Don’t forget these web

pages also list the

websites where we have

individual subscriptions

(such as AfPE) and a whole

raft of links and resources

to help students (and

staff) search for

information effectively and

reference correctly.

terms of usability and

looks much cleaner

than the old

interface—we like it a

lot more here in the

library. If you haven’t

made the transition

yet now is the time to

do so, and if you need

any help or support

please do get in touch

with me.

Remember, the library

catalogue is the best

way to locate our print

books, e-books and

print journals.

For those of you

devoted to our old

catalogue interface

Resources Online it’s

time to say your final

goodbyes.

Links to Resources

Online have now been

removed from the

student and staff

pages, and if you have

a link in your browser

that will shortly stop

working as well.
