Because Costa Rica is located between 8 and 12 degrees north of the Equator, the climate is tropical year round. However, the country has many microclimates depending on elevation, rainfall, topography, and by the geography of each particular region.

ISEAMI HOUSEThe house is located at 30 km

from the closest town (Puerto Jimenez) and therefore has no access to any public service supply as electricity or water.

The house is the main office of the institute and it will serve as a multifunctional place in order to host activities as investigation, meditation, training, Yoga, enjoying the terrace located in the first level.

Within the chosen materials, the thermal-panels (Versawall and Versapanel by Centria) are chosen as the main material for walls and roof because of its solar reflectance index, structural and acoustic properties and ability to give the thermal comfort without using empty spaces on the walls.

Because of the high structural capabilities of the material, the amount of steel structure was lowered considerably, saving the use of the natural resources needed for the anti-seismic structure.

PASSIVE DESIGN

o The construction system is based on a prefab method to reduce the construction time and lower environmental impact. This prefab method can be an example for the local inhabitants, which have a poor economy and will be able to imitate these solutions in different scales with very simple materials.

ISEAMI HOUSE

o The house uses water from the forest, which also serves as a power source thanks to two low-impact hydroelectric turbines that crank 800 kWh

o Solar panels on the roof can provide up to 10.800 kWh of electricity, this energy can also heat up the water in the house

o All the materials used in the construction adapted to the natural environment and is 100% recyclable.

OTHER DESIGN FEATURES:

ISEAMI HOUSE

o The house can be built piece by piece as a Lego, this is to minimize the use of transportation.

o The design create open spaces between walls and ceilings are eliminated, creating a benefit for the indoor air quality because it avoid the creation of mold and plagues common in the projects around.
