A Choral ReadingOne half of the class will read portions marked Section A, from Isaiah 65:17-19, 24, 25. The other

half will read Section B, from Revelation 21:1-4, 23, 24; 22:3, 4, 20.

Section A: “See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.”

Section B: Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.

Section A: “But be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy.”

Section B: I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

Section A: “I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people; the sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more.”

Section B: “[God] will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death” or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.

Section A: “Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.”

Section B: And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. . . . They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.

Section A: “The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,” says the Lord.

Section B: The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. . . . No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.

Both Sections: He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

All on the Altar He/We LayCompared with Ezra’s account of restored sacrifices, the Bible reveals a different picture of sacrifices that

are pleasing to God in the New Testament era. Below each of the following texts, briefly summarize the sac-rifices noted.

Romans 12:1 1 Corinthians 5:7

Philippians 4:18 Hebrews 9:11-14

Hebrews 13:15, 16 1 Peter 2:4, 5

Do you feel like a “sacrifice”? Should you? Why, or why not? What needs to change in your daily life in this regard? Jot ideas below.

Building BlocksWithin the building blocks pictured below, write in the three names of those specifically noted in today’s

text, Ezra 3:8-13, as having participated in laying the foundation for the temple. In other blocks, write in the designations (“his sons,” etc.) of the unnamed participants. (You might not fill all the blocks.)

In what sense do you see these people themselves as “foundation stones” for God’s house? Jot ideas below:

Now think about your role as a building block in God’s “spiritual house” as you read these two verses:

“You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual houseto be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:5).

“[You are] built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone” (Ephesians 2:20).

What is your part in this spiritual house? How can you be more diligent in this regard? Jot ideas below:

Joy and Weeping, Spirit and TruthEzra 8:10-13 describes a noisy worship celebration of joy and weeping. Jesus said, “Yet a time is coming

and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks” (John 4:23). What are some ways our church can encourage joyful and tearful expressions as the congregation worships in spirit and truth? Jot your reflections below.

Three Steps to a Successful LifeAll sorts of advisers are ready to sell books that will “change your life” and “put you on the road to a bet-

ter future.” Ezra knew the “secret” from an eternal perspective. Ezra 7:10 states it in three steps, all having to do with Ezra’s heart, his great life’s desire, and his purpose. Look at that verse and write those three “secrets” below. Then grade your own progress in those three areas. My Grade

2. ______________________________________ A B C D F

Mind Your GAAP!In the secular world, GAAP stands for “generally accepted accounting principles.” Perhaps for church

we can modify this to stand for “God’s acceptable accountability practices” in describing these practices in passages such as Ezra 8:24-35 and 2 Corinthians 8:19-21. Look at those verses and list one or more principles or practices for God’s people as good stewards of church assets. (You might not need all four lines, or you may need to add more.)

2. __________________________________________________

3. __________________________________________________

4. __________________________________________________

If we see a procedure or principle being ignored, what’s the best way to bring this matter to the attention of church leaders? Why is it important to do so? Jot ideas below.

Set Apart to the LordEzra 8:28 speaks of certain items and people as holy to the Lord, or set apart for service to Him. Put a

check mark in the box beside the passage below that most convicts you in seeing the need to set apart the entirety of your life—your time, talent, and treasure, as the old expression goes—as holy to God.

“Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him” (Psalm 4:3).

“In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use. Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work” (2 Timothy 2:20, 21).

“Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters” (Hebrews 2:11).

“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15).

Why did you select the passage you did? How will you make improvements in your “set-apart-ness”? Jot ideas here.

Since God Is . . . , Then I Must . . .Proper confession, the theme of today’s study from Nehemiah 9, is intricately tied to a proper concept of

God. For each of God’s attributes noted to the left, explain how confession should be expressed in that light. One example is given to get you started.

SeparatedThe people “separated themselves from all foreigners” (Nehemiah 9:2) before beginning their confessional

Celebrate AccomplishmentWhat are typical ways the accomplishments below are celebrated? Should Christians

celebrate these differently from how unbelievers do so? Why, or why not?

Let Your Joy Be KnownThe exuberant chorus “I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart” is usually heard from children. Do

we as adults still have the capacity to express exuberant joy in Christ? Copy Nehemiah 12:43 into the frame below and underline all the words related to joy. Then jot your answers to the questions to the right.

1. What was the most recent occasion when you felt as if you just had to express your joy to God while in a public setting?

2. If you had a hard time answering the question above, does that indicate a problem? Why, or why not?

Sanctified Sabbath, Sanctified LifeGod’s directions were clear: “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” God’s commentary on that

commandment is the longest, most detailed of any of the Ten Commandments (see Exodus 20:8-11; Deuter-onomy 5:12-15). The picture in Nehemiah 13 is of people disobeying that command. Note the violation in Nehemiah’s day, then note a parallel of our day.

Lesson 1 Isaiah’s Vision

Answers: A-5, B-2, C-6, D-1, E-4, F-9, G-3, H-7, I-8.

Lesson 3 Steps Away from Proper Worship

Answers in descending order: dull to things of God; God’s Word unknown; mere rituals; turned from God; became own god

Lesson 5 Words of Worship and Joy

Unused puzzle letters that reveal the purpose of the people’s efforts: “Restoring joyful worship”

Note to the teacher: You can either include or not include the “word bank” with the copy of the puzzle you distribute. Not including it will make the puzzle harder to solve, requiring more time.

Lesson 6 Building Blocks

Three names—Zerubbabel, Joshua, Kadmiel; designations: sons of Joshua and his brothers (some learners might put this in one block, while other learners separate it into two blocks); sons of Judah; sons of Henadad; priests; Levites (this overlaps some of the other designations, so some learners might not put Levites in a separate block)

Lesson 7 Joyful

Ezra 6:16 and 6:22

Galatians 5:22: joy is a fruit of the spiritPhilippians 4:4: we are commanded to rejoice in the Lord1 Thessalonians 5:16: we are to rejoice always1 Peter 1:8: joy can be inexpressible—beyond words

Lesson 7 Dedicated To, Separated From

All passages deal with being dedicated to God in holiness as we separate ourselves from unholiness in various ways.

Lesson 8 Qualifications of a Spiritual Leader

For Ezra—7:6a: knew the Word of God; 7:6b, 9b: hand of God was with him; 7:10, devoted to studying, observing, and teaching God’s Word; 8:21, 23, recognized the need for God’s providential care; 8:22, put his beliefs into practice. For Christian leaders—responses will parallel those for Ezra, stated in various ways by the learner.

Lesson 8 Three Steps to a Successful Life

The three steps are seeking (studying) God’s Word, doing God’s Word, and teaching God’s Word.

Lesson 9 Mind Your GAAP!

Some possible answers: those accountable are so noted publicly; no one person is allowed to have total control (“division of duties”); enumeration of assets is done in the presence of others; accounting procedures are open to public scrutiny (“transparency”); those entrusted with assets have a good reputation.

Lesson 10 The Book

Answers: ask for it, v. 1; bring it out, v. 2; honor its holiness, v. 5 (people stood up) or v. 9; read it aloud, v. 8; listen to it, v. 3; clarify its meaning, v. 8; react to it, v. 6; rejoice in it, v. 10; obey it carefully, v. 15. Note: other verse references are possible.

Lesson 10 Eureka!

Answers: Matthew 5:23, 24—extending forgiveness before worshipping; Matthew 7:3-5—being gracious in overlooking minor faults in others; Romans 12:1-3—viewing the totality of one’s life as a living sacrifice; 1 Corinthians 16:2—making giving a priority; 2 Corinthians 9:7—giving cheerfully; Hebrews 10:25—attending worship regularly; James 1:2-4—remembering what trials and temptations really signify; Revelation 1:5, 6—remembering our new status

Lesson 13 Sanctified Sabbath, Sanctified Life

For the “Nehemiah’s Day” column: putting moneymaking first, v. 15; collaborating with the ungodly, possibly vv. 17, 20; with-holding finances from God, v. 10; neglecting responsibilities, v. 18; ignoring history, v. 18.

For the “Our Day” column: A wide range of responses is pos-sible, but here are some texts that speak to the issues: putting money making first, 1 Timothy 6:10; collaborating with the ungodly, 2 Corinthians 6:14; withholding from God, 2 Corin-thians 8:1-15; 9:4-15; neglecting responsibilities, 1 Timothy 4:13-16; ignoring history, Hebrews 11:1–12:3.
