Mark’s analytical mind is in evidence as he talks about the many clinical trials he has undergone as he tries to beat his diagnosis at 46 of inoperable prostate cancer. That’s not surprising as Marks’s background is as a crime analyst for Hertfordshire Police, and his mind is never still.

Susie Baines, Mark’s Isabel Hospice Clinical Nurse Specialist said “Mark’s such an interesting and amazing chap. Every time I visit him, he has researched a new drug, a new trial, a new procedure.” Mark describes himself as a ‘bloke’. He loves fishing, Tottenham and films. He loved his job. He felt it defined him as a person and he struggled for 14 hard months, to keep the news of his illness away from everyone at work, but ironically it was only when he was medically retired, that he felt he had his life back. “I’d had a few times in the night when I’d struggled to go to the toilet” explained Mark “so my wife Deb packed me off to the Doctor. I didn’t feel ill, I felt fine, but then I saw a man in a little room at my local hospital, and they told me I had locally advanced prostate cancer. They said they had nothing left

in their box of tricks to give me.

I didn’t accept that. I couldn’t! I found a wonderful man who saw me at the Royal Marsden, we call him in the family, “The Wizard of Oz”, Professor Johan De Bono. He is like the Wizard because you rarely see him, but he pulls all the handles to make things in my world work. By hiding it at work, it made my home life unbearable, but work was part of my identity. I wasn’t a cancer patient while I was at work. But the time had come for something to give, and so after a long process I was medically retired out of the police.”Since Mark’s diagnosis he has undergone many clinical trials and cutting edge treatments although unfortunately none have been able to cure him.Mark adds “Dr Pia Amsler, the Consultant from Isabel Hospice has just been so brilliant. She is the most marvellous person. She completely sussed me out. I was always one for leaving taking the drugs until I really needed them. Now, whatever she tells me to do I’ll do it. She phoned me over the Jubilee weekend to see how I was. She made me understand that the drugs were there to help me enjoy my life, she helped me ‘get it’, she taught me how to think differently about them and I am so grateful to her.I am also very grateful to the counsellor I have been seeing from the Hospice, Jo. I never felt I needed counselling, blokes

don’t do they! But being able to talk to someone outside the family, someone I can tell anything to, someone that cares about me, but isn’t emotionally involved like Deb is so good for me, and Deb. I don’t have to dump everything on Deb anymore. I see my life in a triangle, The Royal Marsden is one point, Isabel Hospice is another and my family and friends are another. I live within this triangle. I hope that by sharing my story, I am able to raise awareness of what brilliant work the Hospice does. They do things how I want them to be done and I am able to lean on them. They are extraordinary.”

Mark died on August 11th. He had been able, with the advice and support of the Hospice to go on a family holiday to Majorca just a few weeks before. Our condolences go to his family and many friends.

They said they had nothing left in their box of tricks to give me.

I found a wonderful man who saw me at the Royal Marsden, we call him in the family, “The Wizard of Oz”

This is the story of Mark, an Isabel Hospice patient. In his own words you will hear how special our staff are.By supporting Isabel Hospice you are ensuring other people get the same level of care and compassion that Mark and his family have had.

On September 16th many of Mark’s family and friends took part in the Hospice’s annual Chain Walk. Thank you to everyone who took part in the 17

simultaneous walks, and helped to raise nearly £10,000 in the process. The Chain Walk is supported by Ramblers Worldwide Holidays.
