 ……

When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.” The scribes who had come from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “By the prince of demons he drives out demons . . .” Mark 3: 2035

A central theme of Mark’s Gospel is how Jesus’ hearers (especially the Twelve) fail to comprehend the deeper meaning of His wordstand actions. The wild charges made by the scribes and the apologies offered by His family in today’s Gospel indicate just how misunderstood Jesus was by those closest to Him. The Jesus who calls his disciples to be a united “house” and community is dismissed by His own “house” as “out of his mind.” Apologizing for His exorbitant claims about Himself and His challenging their most cherished traditions and revered institutions, his family attempts to bring Jesus home. Question for the Car: Do we ever feel that our faith is “dismissed” by others?

Deacon Phil Kamlowsky Congratulations to Deacon Phil this weekend on the 33rd Anniversary of his Ordination to the Diaconate. We have been blessed in many ways by his ministry in our parish over the years. He shared last weekend the news that he has been granted retirement status as a deacon remaining an ordained deacon, but no longer committed to a regular schedule. We’ll have a special celebration later this month. Details will follow.

Congratulations to our Graduates Many of our young people are celebrating transitions this Spring, as they complete various phases of their education Preschool, Grade School, High School, College, and Graduate Studies and move on to new challenges and adventures. A special “shoutout” to our 8th grade class of Holy Family School who graduated May 31. We are very proud of them as they move on to high school strong in their faith and wellprepared for the academic challenges they will encounter. We share the joy of all of our graduating parishioners as they finish this phase of their lives. We hope that they will carry God’s love with them wherever they go and always see Holy Family as a place they can call “Home”.

COLLECTION FOR THE HOLY FATHER Each year, the annual Peter’s Pence Collection in support of the works of the Holy Father is held in parishes across the country. The proceeds from this collection fund emergencyrelief assistance to those throughout the world who suffer from war, oppression, and natural disasters. When we contribute to this fund, we are actively living the truth in love and speaking the truth in deeds. As we participate in this special appeal, we join with more than 1 billion Catholics in a loving expression of worldwide solidarity. More than 98 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to the Holy Father’s spiritual and charitable efforts around the globe. I ask you to support this Collection as it addresses serious issues that impact people’s lives. Together let us ask the Lord to continue to bless us and the Holy Father in all that we do. Envelopes for this purpose are in our June packets and can be used any Sunday in June. Faith Direct also has a link for this collection.

Gifts of IRA’s and Stocks Will you have increased income as a result of the new tax changes? Perhaps you can consider increasing your offertory contribution to our parish. Changes in the tax law kept in place several popular and attractive charitable gifting options. Gifting appreciated stock (held more than 1year) to our parish may allow you to deduct the stock’s full value and bypass capital gains tax. Also, if you are 70 ½ or older, you may be able to reduce your taxable income this year with a gift made directly from your IRA to our parish. Talk to your advisors and IRA administrator for more information and to be sure that a gift is made directly from an IRA to a qualified charity such as our parish.

Questions? Contact Jamie Heinl in our parish office at: 3306886412, Ext. 213 or Ed Coia at: Ext. 220.

Catholic Charities Followup Last month, we participated in the follow up InPew Appeal for Catholic Charities, which focused on our Diocesan response through Catholic Charities to the ongoing Opioid Crisis. We appreciate that many parishioners already pledged for the 2018 Catholic Charities’ Appeal in February for which we are most grateful. Last week’s appeal is an opportunity for those we missed earlier this year to participate now. In addition, all new, increased, and additional gifts made in the inpew envelopes or donated online at: www.CatholicCommunity.org/challenge will be matched dollarfordollar up to $100,000 by a generous donor to the Diocese. All proceeds from this May campaign will be invested in the Catholic Charities response to the opioid crisis. Envelopes for this purpose remain available on the brick divider at the rear of the church and at each of the doors.

PSR Thanks As the Parish School of Religion and Holy Family School draw to a close for this year, a special THANK YOU! to our teachers, catechists, administrators, and all our volunteers who have made our program possible. Thank you to parents for their diligence in making sure that their children participate fully in the religious education programs. Here’s hoping that the children and young people and their teachers/catechists will have a restful Summer. Don’t forget to join us each Weekend for Mass with your families. We might not have classes but we still have Masses!

Planning for the Future the Finance Council and I anticipate some Capital Expenditures that will be necessary in the next two or three years. With the completion of thereplacement of both the Church roof and the School roofs and significant work on safety/security provisions in the School we must now turn our attention to the heating systems in both the Church and School. Aging boilers are reaching the limits of their viability. We are currently researching the best recommendations for upgrading our systems for longterm future service. Needless to say, this will be costly. We also need to repair several areas of our parking lots and would like to make further efforts to reduce our building fund debt (which will assist us in lowering our monthly operating costs). Once we have more specific plans with reasonable estimates of the costs we will be presenting our proposal for financing the project. You will hear more in the next couple of months.

Enjoy the Summer!! Fr. Paul Rosing

“Thank God! Give him the praise and the glory. Before all the living, acknowledge the

many good things he has done for you.” Tobit 12:6. Call Bill or Mary Ann Kolosi for

praise. Hours before the Blessed Sacrament for the week ending June 2 were 290.

Holy Family Parish Stow, Ohio

Last year, Students for Life

nationwide collected

323,999 pairs of baby

socks to represent the

number of babies aborted

at Planned Parenthood in

their most recent annual

report. Those socks were

displayed in front of the

congress and the senate in

an effort to speed along

the legislation to defund

Planned Parenthood. The

Students for Life

organization then purchased a panel truck, added a

plexiglass seethrough panel, FILLED the truck with all

the socks, and then did a nationwide tour with the

socks. The people who actually saw the display were

overwhelmed, and many hearts and minds were

changed to become prolife.

Visual effects can be very persuasive when trying to

prove a point. Right to Life of Northeast Ohio is

following the lead of Students for Life and would like to

do something similar for our displays at several events,

including the Summit and Portage county fairs. We

would like to collect 20,672 pairs of baby socks(the

number of children aborted in Ohio reported in the 2016

Ohio Department of Health report)to put on display at

these events to encourage conversation about the

devastation of legal abortion.

The Culture of Life group would like to help with

this! We will have a laundry basket in the bell tower

for the next several weekends for parishioners to

drop off pairs of baby socks in it.

Thank you so much for your help!

Immigration: "U.S. Bishops’ Migration Chairman Urges Administration to

Keep Families Together

June 1, 2018The Department of Homeland Security has recently acknowledged

implementation of the policy ofseparating families arriving at the U.S./Mexico Border.

Most Reverend Joe S. Vásquez, Bishop of Austin and Chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) Committee on

Migration, issued the following statement in response:'Forcibly separating children from their mothers and fathers is ineffective

to the goals of deterrence and safety and contrary to our Catholic values.

Family unity is a cornerstone of our American immigration system and a foundational element of Catholic teaching. 'Children are a gift from the

Lord, the fruit of the womb, a reward.' (Psalm 127:3)Children are not instruments of deterrence but a blessing from God.Rupturing the bond between parent and child causes scientificallyproven trauma that often leads to irreparable emotional scarring.

Accordingly, children should always be placed in the least restrictive setting: a safe, family environment, ideally with their own families.

My brother bishops and I understand the need for the security of our borders and country,

but separating arriving families at the U.S./Mexico border does not allay security concerns.

Children and families will continue to take the enormous risks of migrationincluding family separation

because the root causes of migration from the Northern Triangle remain:

community or statesanctioned violence, gang recruitment, poverty, and a lack of educational opportunity.

Any policies should address these factors first as we seek to repair our broken immigration system.'"

When Expired Meds Are Dangerous

June 2018Lord Jesus, bless those who are sick and give them strength in body, courage in spirit, and

healing and patience in pain. When Expired Meds Are Dangerous.

Manufacturers are required by law to stamp an expiration date on medication; it’s the date beyond which they can no longer guarantee the drug’s safety and potency. Our medical

experts (Consumer Reports) say you can keep most medication for up to 12 months past the expiration date with two exceptions, Antibiotic tetracycline pills should never be taken after they’ve expired, when they can become toxic and cause kidney damage. And expired liquid

meds such as nitroglycerin, insulin, and injectable drugs such as epinephrine (think EpiPens) should be replaced immediately upon expiration because drugs in liquid form lose potency beyond the expiration date and might not work well

or at all.A medicine cabinet chock full of expired or unused meds can be risky. How to give it a good spring cleaning.

Accidental drug overdoses are surprisingly common. From 2006 to 2011, unintentional poisonings from prescription opioids alone accounted for 138,603 trips to the emergency room. And according to Dan Budnitz,M.D.,M.P.H., director of the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Medical Safety Program. A major risk factor for drug overdoses in children is easy access to multiple medications.

Storing meds on a high shelf out of sight will help protect children, and regularly disposing of unused and expired drugs will reduce risks for all ages. But many people forget to do that. A 2017 nationally representative survey of 1,006 American

adults by Consumer Reports found that about 1/3rd. of Americans haven’t cleaned out the medicine cabinet in the past year; nearly 1/5th. haven’t done so in the past three years.

Here’s how you can clean your medicine cabinet so that it’s safe (and useful):Return Meds in Person.Your pharmacy, as well as hospitals, clinics, longtermcare facilities and narcotic treatment

programs, might accept your unused medications, often as part of programs that collect and destroy unused drugs. Search for an authorized facility near you atdisposemymeds.org. You can also drop off unused meds at designated police

departments, fire stations, and other sites om National Prescription Take Back Day, Saturday April 28, or almost any time.

Mail Them In.Costco, CVS, and Rite Aid pharmacies sell postagepaid envelopes for customers to mail any prescription, including opioids and overthecounter medications, to a disposal facility.

Use a Disposal Kiosk.Walgreens has free, anonymous, and secure kiosks in almost all states, where you can dispose of any medication. Remove your personal information from the packaging and drop unwanted medication (including opioids) in

the slot.(Carefully) Trash Them.A fifth of the people we surveyed said they got rid of old medications by simply throwing them in

the trash.BUTit’s easy for pills to be fished out by kids or even pets. If getting to one of the dropoff sites listed above is not an option. You can put pills in the trash just hide them in coffee grounds, sawdust, or kitty litter, then seal both in a plastic

bag. (don’t do this with opioids or other meds that can be abused.)IN THE STOW, CUYAHOGA FALLS, SILVER LAKE, MUNROE FALLS, HUDSON AREAS ALL drugs if properly and safely packagedwith personal names and addresses removedcan be disposed of at the MUNROE FALLS POLICE DEPARTMENT IN THE DISPOSABLE BIN IN THE MARKED BOX FOR THIS PURPOSE IN THE FRONT/FOYER ANY

DAY OR NIGHT. Your Parish Nurse recently cleaned her family medicine cabinet and disposed of them as previously instructed. For More Information, see the Stow Sentry local newspaper fordirections.
