Indian Standard GUIDELINES FOR

MARKING PURITY OF SILVER ON SILVER ARTICLES/ORNAMENTS

0. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 18 January 1980, after the draft finalized by the Precious Metals Sectional Committee had been approved by the Structural and Metals Division Council.

0.2 At present silver articles/ornaments are generally not marked with the fineness of the silver used for making them. In most of the advanced countries, all silver articles are marked with the manufacturers’ mark and quality mark. Need was, therefore, felt to provide guidelines for use of certain grades of silver from which articles/ornaments are made and to provide a scheme of marking purity of silver on such articles/ornaments by the manufacturer.

0.3 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accor- dance with IS : 2-1960.. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard recommends four grades of silver for the manufacture of silver articles/ornaments and lays down guidelines for marking such articles/ornaments.

2. TERMINOLOGY

2.0 For the purpose of this standard, the following definitions shall

apply.

2.1 Silver - Grades of silver or silver alloys covered in this standard.

*RI& for rounding off numerical values ( rrvisrd ).

2

ls:9443-1980

2.2 Fineness -The weight of silver content expressed in parts per thousand.

2.3 Assaying - It is the chemical process of determining the silver content of the sample expressed in parts per thousand.

3. GRADES

3.1 The following four grades of silver as indicated should be usoc! for -,.1.:,, “:I ..,._ _“.:_l_l__.._-_..r. 111aLw1g DIIVCI al r,Lrc,“,uaLucF*l~.

3.2 Tolerance

3.2.1 Negative tolerance exceeding 4 parts per thousand should not be allowed on the silver content of the silver article/ornament sampled for testing according to 4.1.

4. SAMPLING

4.1 For assaying fineness of the silver used for the manufacture of the articles/ornaments, the part of the articles/ornaments taken for assay should not contain or have attached thereto any solder or alloy of inferior fitieness used for brazing or joining the parts of said articles. Alternatively a sample of about 300 mg should be taken in the form of filings after initial scraping and buFng of the article/ornament.

4.1.1 For articles/ornaments of the same design and quality, sample should be taken from 10 percent of the articles/ornaments selected at random.

4.2 In case of dispute or where much of solder has been used, the actual fineness of the articles/ornaments should be determined by melting the whole article/ornament and drawing the sample from the melt.

5. ASSAYING c _ ml 3.1 lne part of sample of silver article/ornament taken accor,iing to 4.1 ar 4.2 should be assayed in accordance with IS : 2113-1972..

6. MARKING

6.1 The silver article/ornament should be marked with the following marks:

a) Identification mark of the manufacturer, and

b) A quality mark indicating the fineness of silver used and melting purity.

6.2 Silver article/ornament on which quality mark should not be applied are as follows:

a) Any silver article/ornament which fails to comply with this standard;

b) Any silver article/ornament which is not solid or which is made with a hollow centre and then filled with base metal, cement, lac or other foreign substance, thereby giving the article a false or added weight or strength;

c) Any silver article/ornament or merchandise made in whole or in part of an inferior metal having silver deposited or plated thereon; and

d) Any silver article/ornament on which it is physically impossible to stamp the marks.
