SPECIFICATION FOR FEEDS FQR LABORATORY ANIMALS
PART I RATS AND MICE
0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard ( Part I ) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 16 June 1970, after the draft finalized by the Animal Feeds Sectional Committee had been approved by the Agricultural and Food Products Division Council.
0.2 Various kinds of laboratory animals, such as rats, guinea pigs, ham- sters, rabbits and monkeys are finding an increasing use in modern biologi- cal research and testing of various drugs and pesticides. The animals maintained in the stock-colonies thrive and reproduce efficiently when fed on proper diet which is also necessary to ensure that the animals are free from pathogens. A series of Indian Standards is, therefore, being formulated to ensure availability of compounded feeds of suitable quality for feeding different laboratory animals. It is expected that these standards would be of assistance to the rapidly developing laboratory animal feeds industry.
0.3 The fungus AspergillusJlavus generally associated with groundnuts and oilcakes produces aflatoxin, the presence of which in laboratory animal feeds might affect the health of these animals thereby affecting results of the experiments in which they have been used. It is, therefore, recommend- ed that the users while procuring feeds for their use should ensure that their alfatoxin content is within safe limits.
0.4 Indian Standard codes of practice dealing with other aspects, such as care, breeding and management of laboratory animals, are being prepared separately. However, Indian Standards for compounded feeds for various laboratory animals are complementary to these codes.
0.5 ‘I’he ‘Indian Standard specification for feeds for laboratory animals’ will bc issued in several parts. This part ( Part I ) covers the requirements for the feeds for rats and mice. Specification covering the requirements for feeds for other laboratory animals are under preparation.
0.6 l:or the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this staudard is complied with, the final v-alue, observed or calculated,

expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2 - 1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.
1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard ( Part I ) prescribes the requirements and the qethods of sampling and test for feeds for laboratory rats and mice.
2. REQUIREMENTS
2.1 Description - Compounded feeds for laboratory rats and mice shall be in the form of crumbs, cubes or pellets. The feed shall be free from rancidity, musty infestation.

NOTE - The use of the IS1 Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of the Indian Standards Institution ( Certification Marks ) Act, and the Rules and Regula- tions made thereunder. Presence of this mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard, under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and quality control during production. IS1 and operated by the producer,
This system, which is devised and supervised by has the further safeguard that the products as
actually marketed are continuously checked by IS1 for conformity to the standard. Details of conditions, under which a licence for the use of the IS1 Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, may be obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.

5. TESTS
5.1 Tests shall be carried out as prescribed in appropriate appendices specified in co1 4 and 5 of Table 1.
5.2 Quality of Reagents - Unless specified otherwise, pure chemicals shall be employed in tests and distilled water ( see IS : 1070-1960~ ) shall be used where the use of water as a reagent is intended.
NOTE - ‘Pure chemicals’ shall mean chemicals that do not contain impurities which affect the results of analysis.
