lndian Standard SPECIFICATION FOR

ORGANIC PIGMENTS FOR PAINTS

PART I AZ0 PIGMENTS (TOLUIDINE RED; CHLORINATED p-NITROANILIKE RED; ARYLAMIDE YELLOWS;

AND PARA RED)

0. FOREWORD 0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institu- tion on 3 November 1965, after ihe draft finalized by the Paints and Allied Products Sectional Committee had been approved by the Chemical Division Council.

0.2 Among the most important organic pigments used in paint industry are toluidine red, chlorinated p-nitroaniline red ( commercially known as signal red or permanent red ), nrylamide yellow G and 10 C: ( commercially known as fast yellow or hansa yellow) and to some extent para red. Dinitro-aniline red ( permanent orange ) has not been included in this standard as the production of this pigment has been virtually discarded in this country. The colour index number of these pigments are as follows:

Toluidine red - colour index No. 12 120; C.I. pigment red 3.

Chlorinated p-nitroaniline red -colour index i\lTo. 12 085; C.I. pig-

ment red 4.

Arylamide yellow G -colour index NO. 11 680; C.I. pigment yellow 1.

Arylamide yellow 10 C- colour index NO. 11 710; C.I. pigment yellow 3.

Para red 1 colour index So. 12 070; C.I. pigment red 1.

0.2.1 Toluidine reds may differ in mass tone. The post office red colour characteristically produced by this pigment is obtained by using either a single pigment or more often by a blend of t\vo or more pigments. The blending of toluidine reds of varying mass tones is usually necessary in order to get a close match to Indian Standard colour Ko. 538 of IS : 5-1961*.

0.2.2 Unlike toluidine reds, chlorinated p-nitroaniline red is usaully pro- duced in order to get a close match to IS Colour No. 53i of IS:5-1961*,

*Colours for rrady mixed paints ( seconcl revision ) .

directly without further blending. Sometimes, manufacturers offer chlori- nated p-nitroaniline red in two mass tones, namely one a little lighter and the other a little deeper in colour to Indian Standard Colour No. 537 of IS : 5-lY61*. A judicious blending of these two results in a close match to the standard colour desired.

0.2.3 Arylamide yellow G and 10 G differ in mass tones (G denotes pure yellow and 10 G denotes greenish yellow ). A suitable blend of arylamide G and 10 G will produce arylamide yellow 3 G and arylamide yellow 7 G.

0.2.4 Para red is usually produced only in one mass tone and used in cheaper type of paints on account of its lower cost.

0.3 The structural formulre of these pigments are given in 0.3.1 to 0.3.5.

0.4 Considering the importance of these pigments to the paint industry, the Ccmmittee responsible for the formulation of this standard agreed to include their physico-chemical requirements in this standard. Apart from establishing the identity of the material, it is also expected to assist manu- facturers in standardizing their production and consumers in selecting the pigments of acceptable quality.

0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, express- ing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should bc the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard prescribes the requirements and the methods of sampl- ing and test for five organic pigments, namely, toluidine red, chlorinated p-nitroaniline red, arylamide yellow G and 10 G and para red used in paints and allied industries.

2. TERMINOLOGY

2.1 For the purpose of this standard, the definitions given in IS: 1303- 1963t and IS : 3493-1965: shall apply.

3. REQUIREMENTS

3.1 Form and Condition -The pigments shall be in the form of a fine, dry, soft *powder or in such a condition that it can be readily reduced to the powder form by crushing under a palette knife, without grinding action. The pigments shall also be free from grit.

3.2 The pigments shall comply with the requirements given in Table 1.

4. PACKING AND MARKING

4.1 Packing-Unless otherwise agreed to between the purchaser and the supplier, the organic pigments shall be packed in sound drums of fibre board, p!ywood, black-iron sheet with polyethylene film inlay or in polye- thylene hned bituminized jute or multi-walled paper bags.

4.2 Marking - The container shall be marked with the name of the material; manufacturer’s name and trade-mark, if any, weight of the materialland lot and batch number.
