SPECIFICATION FOR GRAM CHUNI

0. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 8 July 1965, after the draft finalized by the Animal Feeds Sectional Committee had been approved by the .Agricultural and Food Products Division Council.

0.2 Gram CZZU.NZ is a common livestock feed in India. The formulation of this standard was undertaken by the Animal Feeds Sectional Committee in accordance with its programme planned for the formulation of Indian Standards for the various livestock feeds used in this country.

0.3 This standard contains a clause ( see 3.1) which calls for an agreement between the purchaser and the vendor at the time of placing orders.

0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, express- ing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 The standard prescribes the requirements and the methods of test for gram ( Cicer arietinwn L. ) CHUNZ for use as livestock feed.

2. REQUIREMENTS

2.1 Description - Gram CHU.N’Z shall be the material obtained as a by- product in the preparation of gram DAL for human consumption and consists of finer broken pieces of DAL including germ and a portion of the husk. The material shall be free from adulterants, musty, stale, or other objectionable odour or sourness, and from lumps, dirt, and extraneous matter, including iron or other metallic.pieces. Thematerial shall be free from fungus or insect infestation.

*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ).

Nara - The use of the ISI Ccrti&tion Mark i govwncd by the provision8 of the Indian Standan% Inatltutlon ( Certification Marks ) Act and the Rules and Reguktioor made thereunder. The IS1 Mark on productr covered by an Indian Standard conveys the aaaurancc that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of. that standard under a welld&nui system of inspection, t*rting and quality control winch ir devised and supuvlsed by ISI and operated by the producer. ISI marked producta are also conimuoualy checked by IS1 for conformi* to that standard as a further safeguard. Detaila of u~~ditiona under which a licencc for the use of the IS1 Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers or proccason, may be obtained from the Indlaa Standarda Institution.

5. SAMqLING AND CRITERIA FOR CONFORMITY

5.1 Reprqentative samples of the material for tests shall be drawn accord- ing to the method prescribed in Appendix A of IS : 2052-1962*. .

5.2 Nrunber of Tests -Tests for crude protein and acid insoluble ash shall be conducted individually on each of the samples constituting a set of test samples while the tests for the remaining characteristics, specified in Table 1, shall be conducted on the composite sample.

5.3 Criteria for Cossfornaity - A lot shall be considered as conforming to the specification, when:

a) each of the test results for crude protein and acid insoluble ash satisfies the requirements as specified in Table 1, and

b) the test results on the composite sample satisfy the requirements for the remaining characteristics specified in Table 1.

5.3.1 If one or tiore test results do wt satisfy the requirements for crude protein and acid insoluble ash, ‘the following procedure shall be adopted for determining the conformity of the material for these Wo characteristics:

Calculate the mean and range as follows:

Mean (Z) = Sum of the test results

Number of test. samples

Range (R) = Difference between the niaximum and the mini- mum values of the test results

The requirements for crude protein and acid insoluble ash shall be considered as fulfilled ifz

x - 0.4 R is equal to or greater than the requirement for crude protein, and

x -+ O-4 R is less than or equal to the requirement for acid insolu- ble ash.

53.2 If the requirements for all the remaining characteristics are not satisfied after testing the composite sample, a test or tests for the charac- teristic(s) not satisfying the requirement(s) shall be made on each of the test samples in the set. If the test results obtained on each of the indivi- dual samples satisfy the requirement(s) of the specification for the relevant characteristic(s)_, then the lot shall be considered as having satisfied the requirement(s) m respect of such characteristic(s).

6. TESTS

6.1 Tests shall be carried out as prescribed in the appendic& specified in co1 4 and 5 of Table 1, with the exception that C-l.1 of IS : 2052-1962*, which prescribes the grinding of ihe material before analysis is not appli- cable in this case.

6.2 Pure chemicals and distilled water ( see IS : 1070-1960t) shall be employed in tests.

NOTE - ‘Pure chemicals ’ shall mean chemicals that do not contain impurities which affect the experimental results.
