Welcome to the IRTE Skills Challenge 2019 AwardsThe purpose of the IRTE Skills Challenge is to support the bus and coach sector through the most essential of its parts; the technicians. The sector must continue to produce the technicians and apprentices who keep these passenger carrying vehicles safely on the road, and this competition aims to give them the platform to show what they can do. The contribution of our sponsors, supporters and partners, who consistently support the SOE in adapting the competition to meet the demands of the sector, cannot be underestimated. I would like to express our gratitude to them and our commitment to further developing the standard of this competition in the years ahead.

Bruce McGill Chief Executive Officer, Society of Operations Engineers

DVSA supports the Skills Challenge because we think that it’s a great opportunity for like-minded professionals across this industry of the bus and coach world to test themselves and, most of all, share best practice across the fleet. That’s a real benefit to us in the industry. The contestants that we spoke to came away from the competition testing day feeling reassured, confident and engaged in what they do. It’s a good test for where they’re at, whether you’re doing an apprenticeship or if you’ve been in the industry for a long time, and there’s something for everyone at the Skills Challenge.

Richard HennessyDirector of Operations (South), DVSA

The automotive sector is in a period of immense technical change and is facing some of the biggest developments in its history. Systems and technology are rapidly evolving, and our workforces must be prepared to meet the needs of the future. The Skills Challenge tests at the highest level and identifies the very best technicians; it gives them the recognition they deserve. We are proud to host the Skills Challenge, and our partnership with SOE and the great sponsors enables us to enhance the high-quality training we deliver at S&B Automotive Academy. By training and supporting our technicians of today, we can prepare them for the exciting future ahead.

Phil MarshChief Executive Officer, S&B Automotive Academy

With thanks to our sponsors

Philip Margrave Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement

The Philip Margrave Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement is given to the individual who greatly contributed to the promotion and development of apprenticeships within the bus and coach industry.Philip Margrave MSOE MIRTE was a Group Engineering Director at Go-Ahead London and spent over four decades in the bus industry. He greatly contributed to the Challenge in its early years with his knowledge and generosity.

WinnerLee SandfordNational Express West Midlands National Express West Midlands Engineering Training Manager Lee Sandford has completely changed his company’s approach to apprenticeships.Lee decided to focus on identifying internal talent among non-craft employees – cleaners, ancillary, mech support – rather than searching externally; Lee gives existing staff the opportunity to apply for apprenticeships fi rst. Apprentice conversion rate is now 80%.Lee has worked hard to change the internal business culture surrounding apprenticeships. Instead of apprenticeships being undervalued, he has positioned them as a promotion and a career path from non-craft to a skilled craft job.

David LeslieLothian BusesDavid started his career as an apprentice technician in the car industry when he was 16 and moved to Lothian Buses in 2014. He has shown a great attitude throughout his time with Lothian Buses, enjoys diff erent challenges, and is a positive example to his colleagues.

Launched last year, the IRTE Skills Challenge Masters category welcomes back previous winners to compete in a best-of-the-best showdown.

Engineers nominated to this prestige category compete in both mechanical and electrical tasks – part practical, part theoretical – with increased complexity. Multi-skilled technicians have become more sought-after in the bus and coach sector, as operators seek recruits with a diverse range of engineering skills. This new category will award technicians who show versatility and excellence in every aspect of their role.
