Message from the ChairmanThe main contours of IRMA’s graduates are well known. They are given a high level teaching experience in the core discipline and functional areas of management. There is, of course, an added emphasis on knowledge and skills relating to rural development. During the last few years, IRMA has strengthened itself with considerable high level faculty expertise and large research projects. This has strengthened its teaching efforts.

There has been a major attempt at Re-visioning the mandate and working of the institution which was not easy since the original charter was laid by the iconic figures. There has been a review of the PRM with a sharper focus on theoretical foundations and functional areas. Pedagogy and experience based learning have also been emphasized.

The essence of an IRMA graduate is the field experience of eight weeks in India’s villages. An IRMAN is young, energetic, has come through a nationwide screening process. She or he is taught management techniques but is also grounded in India’s villages. She or he is an exceptional product. Please come and find out for yourself.

Yoginder K. AlaghChairman, [email protected]

Page 5: IRMA brochure

Message from the DirectorIRMA’s vision is of “promoting sustainable, ecologically-friendly, and equitable socio economic development of rural people through professional management”. Towards this end IRMA has been training rural managers and producing cutting edge knowledge on rural issues since 1979. Rapid rural transformation has taken place in last two decades in India. As linkages between rural and urban India have grown, the rural-urban divide too has begun to be less stark than it used to be. Today’s rural population has a multi-dimensional profile. We train our participants to address the new emerging challenges in the coming years such as issues of sustainable livelihoods and natural resource management, conflict resolution around land based and natural resources issues, rural infrastructure, including water and sanitation and energy management, and modernized citizen-friendly delivery of social development programmes such as NREGA and NRLM.

I take great pleasure in introducing the graduating batch of the Post graduate Programme in Rural Management (PRM 2011-13). These participants have been chosen and trained to be committed professional rural managers. We trust that they will serve rural India and the organizations they choose with integrity and determination. I wish the graduating batch a fruitful career ahead.

Page 8: IRMA brochure

The institute was established with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development (SDC), the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat, the erstwhile Indian Dairy Corporation and the National Dairy Development Board to provide management education, training, research and consultancy support to co-operatives and other organizations working for rural development in India. The core of IRMA’s operating philosophy has been to build and sustain a partnership between rural people and committed professional managers. IRMA recognizes that given the complex environment in which rural organizations work, there is a great need for professional management in these organizations. Thus, IRMA strives to contribute to the promotion of sustainable development and social justice in India’s rural society. Under this backdrop, IRMA conducts many programmes and activities:

Post Graduate Programme in Rural Management (PRM)

This programme is meant for individuals who wish to take on challenging managerial responsibilities at institutions working for the rural sector. PRM is a rigorous two-year residential course. It is recognized as the equivalent of a master’s degree by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and is also approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

IRMA – An institute with a noble mission:Ever since its inception in 1979, it has been moulding and perfecting the managerial proficiencies of participants.

6

Page 9: IRMA brochure

The unique strength of IRMA is its concern with integrating development and management in all its endeavours and activities. This perspective sets IRMA apart from other management and rural development institutions, which are largely concerned with either management or development but not both. Besides building a strong foundation of all management disciplines, IRMA sensitizes participants to the realities of rural India through a meticulously designed course structure. It emphasizes a pragmatic approach to management education and experiential learning through two internships and extensive fieldwork.

In effect, the participants spend more than six months outside the campus gaining valuable hands-on experience with diverse organizations across the length and breadth of the country. The state-of-the-art facilities and the extra-curricular activities ensure that the participants are constantly stimulated to achieve throughout the duration of the course.

Fellow Programme in Rural Management(FPRM) This is a doctoral-level programme launched in 2001 to cater to the coun-try’s need for persons trained in re-search, who are capable of enhancing knowledge and imparting skills in in-stitutions and organizations serving the rural sector.

Research and Consulting

Research and consultancy serve to enrich the quality and content of teaching and training. Continuous upgrading has placed IRMA in the enviable position of serving clientele most efficiently by helping the latter identify and resolve its critical management problems. IRMA has undertaken consulting assignments for many major national and international bodies including the Government of India, World Bank, International Labour Organization, UNICEF, UNDP, Swiss Agency for Development and Co-operation, the Ford Foundation etc.

Management Development Programmes (MDPs)IRMA has also become a premier centre for training in-service managers in rural management. It offers a variety of Management Development Programmes (MDPs) for this purpose. These MDPs have ranged in duration from one day to four weeks as per the needs of training. IRMA conducts both ‘open’ and ‘sponsored’ MDPs. The ‘sponsored’ MDPs are also conducted out of IRMA campus on request of sponsoring organizations. The Executive Training and Development Centre (ETDC) of IRMA equipped with all required modern facilities is fully dedicated for the purpose of training. During the year 2011-12, IRMA conducted 32 MDPs out of which about

50 percent were sponsored. IRMA has planned to offer 41 MDPs during 2012-13.

PublicationsThe Institute has a publication programme managed by the Committee on Research, Publications and Seminars (CORPAS) which facilitates the dissemination of the Institute’s research work. The Institute’s publication programme is a response to the need for charting a unique path in rural management, a discipline defined and developed by IRMA. It encompasses an array of aspects of the rural sector comprising working papers, research papers, workshop reports, cases in rural management, monographs, and occasional publications. Faculty members have routinely been recognized for their research and publications.

International Journal of Rural Management (IJRM)

IJRM intends to serve as the platform for academicians as well as practitioners to share their rich academic work and learning experience gained in the field of rural management. Its objective is to encourage the development of an international community of researchers/academicians to interact regularly with one another for the free flow of ideas and knowledge on rural management and to develop a corpus of knowledge in the field of rural management.

Diversity of the batch:Every batch at IRMA is a composite of diverse backgrounds. The participants are admitted to the programme after a rigorous selection process. Such a varied mix of handpicked participants coupled with a generous faculty-participant ratio of 1:8 creates a conducive learning environment.

Participants at IRMA learn to balance classroom studies, multiple assignments, and team tasks with utmost dexterity that prepares them for demanding careers in the future. Be it participants with prior work-experience or eager freshmen, all participants enter IRMA with a flame in their hearts. Classroom Learning:

Every batch undergoes five terms of classroom training, the duration of each being around two-and-a-half months. The PRM classroom segment consists of 28 core courses making 24 credits, with 6 credits for elective courses. The courses are classified into four groups, i.e. foundation courses, management functional area courses, development and co-operation courses, and integrative courses. The foundation courses are the basic building blocks for all other groups of courses. The PRM curriculum has 8.5 credits’ worth of foundation courses. The management functional area courses as well as the development and co-operation courses build on the foundation courses and enlarge perspectives, decision-making orientation at organizational level, as well as associated knowledge and competencies for application. These two groups comprise 8.5 credits and 5 credits respectively. The remaining

2 credits of the core courses are integrative and applied in their focus and orientation. Participants are also encouraged to specialize in their areas of interest by choosing from a total of 24 elective courses across the broad categories of rural development management and rural enterprise management.

The pedagogy within a course varies with the need of the respective course - right from interactive lectures and conceptual learning through class projects and exercises to case discussions. IRMA uses a mix of all the various modes of knowledge dissemination, encouraging both teaching and self-learning.

IRMA is one of the few management institutes in the country where an entire course is taught by executives from the corporate world. Participants at IRMA are presented with the unique opportunity of learning from the executives of GCMMF, the marketer of brand AMUL, the sales and distribution management techniques employed by them.

Case Studies

Drawing upon their experience in research and consultancy IRMA faculty members prepare and publish case studies in the field of rural management and other functional areas of management. These case studies along with those drawn from other leading national and international B-schools are used for bringing in contextual analyses and insights into

issues being discussed in the classes by simulating a business environment in the classroom.

Simulation Games and Audio-Visual Techniques

In order to help participants grasp management concepts and development constructs better numerous simulation games and

audio-visual techniques are used. IRMA’s library is a storehouse of some of the best films and documentaries in management and development.

An example of a management simulation game is ‘Naranpur Express’, which simulates rural economy and emphasizes the need for asset management and financial prudence. It is an award-winning game, having been recognized as one of the best management games by the All India Management Association (AIMA). The game is a wonderful way of inducting fresh graduates into the PRM programme. IRMA faculty members have been invited by other top management schools in the country to conduct this game.

Projects and PresentationsProjects and presentations form an integral part of the stimulating

curriculum at IRMA, giving participants the opportunity to showcase their knowledge, creativity, and dynamism. Working in different groups with participants from diverse academic backgrounds widens the knowledge base of every participant and brings variety to their unique learning experience, besides honing their leadership and man-management skills. Projects combine innovation and learning, with such innovative and thought-provoking projects such as writing policy briefs, blogs, creating video collages of developmental activities, creating business plans for co-operatives etc being a part of the curriculum of some courses. Such innovative projects encourage participants to develop ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking and also gain a wide perspective on subject matter.

Experiential Learning

Another unique aspect of IRMA and the PRM course is the emphasis on experiential learning. Participants spend almost a third of their time outside of campus applying what they have learnt. IRMA believes this to be an integral part of what shapes the participants’ outlook. Therefore, by the time a participant graduates with a PRM diploma, he or she has lived and worked in rural areas for more than six months, thus becoming a valuable asset to any organization wanting to cater to the needs of rural development.

Induction Fieldwork

In their very first week at IRMA participants are sent to stay in the villages of Gujarat for a period of ten days. This forms their induction into the course. The objective is to throw participants into the deep end. This is especially useful in shattering the romanticized notions of the idyllic village life that participants from urban areas might have, exposing them to the ground realities and helping them in gaining a practical perspective before they head back to classrooms and learn about rural life from an academic perspective.

17

Page 20: IRMA brochure

Fieldwork Segment

Prior to the main fieldwork participants gain first-hand experience using different Rural Research methods during the Fieldwork Preparation week. The participants are organized into groups and conduct exercises like the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), Focused Group Discussions (FGDs), transect walks, etc in selected villages of Gujarat.

For the main fieldwork, participants are placed in the care of a host grassroots civil society or government organization

undertaking an intervention in the village. The Rural Action Component (RAC) prescribed by the host organization enables participants to gain hands-on experience of working in villages. Participants are also encouraged to research on as many as three themes of their choice, which typically have to do with a problem or opportunity prevalent in the village. Participants are guided by faculty members during research. The village report that is required to be submitted upon the participants’ return to IRMA entails a complete socio-economic understanding of the village, placed in the political and cultural setting of the village life.

IRMA believes in experiential learning and the ten-week long Fieldwork Segment (FWS) is the first step in the process. Participants stay in villages for that entire duration to obtain exposure to rural realities and concerns.

18

Page 21: IRMA brochure

Organizational Traineeship Segment

Participants are required to extensively analyze the organization - its external and internal dynamics, culture and co-ordination mechanisms. The Organizational Action Component (OAC) provides participants the opportunity of working on a problem in any functional area of management in the host organization. Upholding the tradition of IRMA the OTS of 2012 was diverse and rich in terms of categories of organizations, geographical locations, project profiles and sectors.

The Organizational Traineeship Segment (OTS) is spread over ten weeks and allows participants the opportunity of understanding the structure and dynamics of an organization influencing its working.

Participant Representation and Participants’ Bodies06

31

Page 34: IRMA brochure

The Participant Body of each batch elects members to these committees. This arrangement provides the participants with a platform to represent their issues and interests. Also, it provides a valuable experience in ‘self-management’ through proper utilization of welfare fund and monitoring of the activities of the elected representatives; this helps sharpen the participants’ management and decision-making skills.

Participants’ Activities

IRMA provides participants the opportunity of giving their creative best not only in the classrooms but also in a wide array of other activities. Whether it is writing on contemporary issues and challenges faced by the rural manager in Terra Firma, positively contributing to the lives of the less privileged slum children, networking

with microfinance enterprises, or participating in various inter B-school competitions participants have a strong connect with various aspects of life beyond the campus. Participants’ zeal for organizing and being a part of inter-block competitions and sporting events on campus is a testimony to the fact that they enjoy and live the unique IRMA experience to the fullest.

IRMA Social Entrepreneurship Cell

IRMA Social Entrepreneurship Cell (ISEC) is the brainchild of the 33rd batch. It is a participant governed body

supported by faculty, encouraging entrepreneurial activities amongst

the participants of IRMA. It envisions becoming a centre of innovation and a knowledge hub with an added value of support and informational services propelling the growth of development ventures.

In order to generate enthusiasm for entrepreneurship participants have been conducting seminars and workshops by alumni and eminent personalities. The two flagship projects i.e., Organic Community Farming and Cycle Renting services on campus are already in their operational stages.

ISEC is in the process of establishing itself so that it can incubate budding social ventures financially and technically with resources and knowledge by collaborating with various funding agencies and catalysing it with the knowledge of the IRMA community, its alumni and other experts from the development sector.

Jigyasa JJigyasa is the quiz club of the participants. Launched by participants

of the 31st batch, the club meets every fortnight to engage in quiz sessions; it also represents IRMA at inter B-school quiz competitions. The aim of the club is to ensure that participants are abreast of the goings on in the fields of business, politics, sports, environment issues, popular culture and other current affairs and news from the world over. The atmosphere in these quizzes is electric and rife with friendly competition.

Terra Firma

Terra Firma, Firma, popularly known as “the participants’ mouthpiece” is an annual in-house magazine that allows participants to exhibit their thoughts on various issues of concern.

It is a platform for staging ideas and floating articles, papers, stories, poems, debates and other forms of expression. It is widely circulated among the participants, faculty members and alumni. It is also meant to serve as an imprint of every graduating batch of lRMA, preserving their ways of thinking.

The Wall

The Wall, popularly known as “the mirror of IRMA” is a quarterly feature that is a hub of ideas on various

aspects of life and development. It is a collective initiative that celebrates the unique life at IRMA. It was born out of a felt need for a platform for participants to critique and express their views from development to life in general.

Ektanagar Initiative: ACTS

The Ektanagar Initiative was conceived as a development lab by the participants of the 26th batch of the PRM and the faculty of IRMA in April 2006. The basic objective of this initiative is to undertake social development work in the slums of Anand. Currently, development work is underway at Ektanagar, a slum cluster situated about 2.5 kms from the IRMA campus and consisting of about 400 households. The major activities over the last six years of its operation have included efforts towards imparting education to children in Ektanagar with the ultimate intention of gradually mainstreaming them into public schools. The initiative is currently being managed by the PRM 32 batch with the vision of creating a strong network, primarily consisting of participants from educational institutions in and around Anand, including their alumni and the teacher community, which shall work for the empowerment and welfare of local slum communities. Participants of PRM 2011-2013 have been instrumental in operation of the activity, also in contributing to the corpus and looking forward to come out with an intensive course design to facilitate more learning.

JatraJatra, the prestigious annual participants’ festival at IRMA, is an occasion for participants to revel in the celebration of the journey called life. It is symbolic of the myriad colours that life offers and brings out the true spirit of togetherness in participants. During the Jatra all the nine hostel blocks compete for the prestigious Jatra cup in the true spirit of sportsmanship. The festival is a marathon of inter-block competitions and lasts for three days during which the participants get ample opportunities to showcase their talents, wits, and creativity. The motto of Jatra reflects the values of Integrity (Nishtha), Creativity (Rachnatmakta) and Excellence (Utkrishtta), that every IRMAn cherishes.

MilaapMilaap, the alumni meet of IRMA, started in 2007 and every year since, the number of alumni attending the event

has increased. More than a hundred alumni and their family members attended the last edition. The revelry at Milaap never ends with a plethora of exciting activities organised for alumni and their families, including a colourful cultural show by the first year participants. The ‘Bees Saal Baad’ event at every Milaap is a special treat for those alumni who graduated two decades ago and enables them to relive their experiences at IRMA. Alumni are accommodated in the participants’ hostels to complete their experience.

Anand Run

Anand Run is the annual mini-marathon organized by IRMA, on the second day of Milaap. The 13 km and 6.5 km long run see hundreds of conscientious citizens of Anand running together for a special cause. Every year the Anand Run takes up a cause which is close to every IRMAn’s heart. During Anand Run 2012 people ran the distances to support the Ektanagar Initiative. A record number of people from all walks of life came together on a cold January morning to make the event a grand success.

Convocations0737

Page 40: IRMA brochure

The convocation of the graduating batch marks the culmination of the two-year course at IRMA, setting the stage for graduates to embark on the journey towards fulfilling the institutional mandate, by now internalised by them as a shared vision. IRMA’s mandate has a powerful appeal. The last 31 convocations have seen eminent leaders from different areas of Indian and global economic, political and social space as chief

guests. IRMA’s convocations during the early years were even attended by tens of thousands of farmers. For the convocation ceremony, participants and faculty are dressed in the traditional Indian attire - plain cream Kurta and Pyjama and Kolhapuri Chappals. This symbolises the participants’ pledge to work with the common Indian.

Excerpts from His Excellency, Chairman of UIDAI, Mr. Nandan Nilekani’s speech:“IRMA is an institute I greatly admire for its effort to bring high quality talent to rural management. Its goal of equitable development is an admirable one and es-pecially relevant today for India. IRMANs will be building careers in a country that is undergoing a large amount of change economically and socially. You are a criti-cal generation for India, the ones who will shape the country’s eventual identity as an economic and political force. Having done your degree in rural management, you are well aware of the challenges inherent in this. While the economy is now making definite inroads to our rural markets, it largely lags behind the rest of the country. Your key to success would be to bring new ideas and answers to bring transformation in people’s lives.”
