To most people, Anna Gare is best known for hosting Junior Masterchef, but if you dig a bit deeper you’ll find out some fascinating things about the supermum from Perth. For starters she is married to that seven foot plus giant, basketball legend Luc Longley, and that her sister is married to UK comedian and author/comic Ben Elton (writer of Blackadder and The Young Ones).

Which begs the first question to Anna at her home/kitchen/office in Perth, and that’s how amazing must Christmas at her place be with four kids, a sports hero and a fast talking comedian all around the table?

“Well we do have a great time at Christmas I’ll give you that. There’s always a lot of people

at my table and the problem is everyone talks at once, so I fill them with food as it’s the only way to shut them up!”

Gare lived the rock n’roll lifestyle playing in the four piece female band ‘The Jam Tarts’ for over a decade, starting as a teen, but found that food was really her calling.

“Food was always my passion, there was a woman who came to my school and taught us how to cook and I followed her around like a rotten zucchini. I left school at 15 and did work experience in a restaurant in grade ten.

“I went home that day and said life is too much fun, and I’ve got a job. My mum knew I’d always do what I wanted to do, and I then worked in a restaurant by day, while playing

Anna Gare is kept busy with four children and a giant of a husband, but her greatest love is food, and it’s inspired her to convince Australia that the best food is that which is made at home. She wants us all to ‘Eat In’, and that’s not a bad thing.

gigs at night. That was a ten year pattern. The two worked well together, until I had babies and never go back into the music scene.

“Food just took its course. I did a bit of catering when I was a young mum and it all just snowballed from there. One friend’s wedding led to a business getting out of control. So there I was catering for all the posh tots of Perth and other doors opened up for me. I started working behind the scenes in TV with Ian Parmenter and he encouraged me to get in front of the camera. I did a local Perth show and again it snowballed, until I was cooking on TV. Funnily enough I haven’t actually cooked on TV for a couple of years, but I’m so excited about this new book, I’ve loved doing it.”

The book entitled ‘Eat In’ is a collection of simple, yet tasty recipes that Anna has compiled with the knowledge that Australia is ready to get creative in the kitchen and instead of watching it on TV, actually doing the cooking for themselves.

“When you’re doing a recipe on TV you know it has to be simple so that people of all walks of life can make it, and that has helped to perfect recipes for this book. Cooking at home is what I love doing, with whatever I have on hand, or whatever the kids order. You know sometimes how you can cook just about anything?

“I think if you have a gift with food, and you come home and have to make a dinner for six its easy, I love doing that. I never get tired of that form of cooking. Now I work from home my kitchen is my office, my space…it’s my

everything. If a dish is a hit with my tough critics (my children and my hungry seven foot giant of a husband), I put it in the book.

“I have a few friends that I’m going to start testing things on, I call them my ‘food dummies’. I want them to try my recipes, even though I’ve done them many times, its nice to get others to try it.

“There are a couple of Asian recipes in this book, which shows the change of tastes. When I was younger food was mostly influenced by Greece and Italy, but the Asian influence now is amazing, plus we are now getting Middle Eastern influences. I love it, I think it reflects how we are changing as a nation with all these new foods and I’m always willing to try new things.

“I think we’ve come a long way with food in Australia in the last few years. All we hear is about teenagers on screens all the time, but truth is they are very intelligent and they want to know about food, where it comes from and what’s in it. People are looking more behind food in that respect, and shows like Masterchef, or Jamie Oliver and such have helped to show people that you can make things from scratch and it inspires them to have a go.

“My goal is to get back to basics, to make good, simple, affordable food and simple cooking. It is really needed these days.”

‘Eat In’ is out now in all good bookstores. Anna has also given us a couple of recipes to share with our readers, so keep an eye out for these in future issues of ‘Ipswich Life’.

One of Queensland’s last remaining drive-in theatres, at Tivoli, is facing the challenge of its life, as technology is threatening to put the cinema out of business.

Increasingly, movies coming from studios are only in a digital format, so the cinema’s old 35mm projector can screen only a limited number of movies for Ipswich patrons…and time is running out for the drive-in.

Pastor Fred Muys, who manages the drive-in, said there has been a sudden decline in movies available on 35mm, so $100,000 has to be raised to buy a digital projector, or it will have to close. No movies to show means no drive in, and no affordable night out for many families.

“We’ve been running the drive in since 2008 and its been popular with families for a low-cost family night out. Any profits we make go into running the food co-op in the Ipswich CBD, and employing long term unemployed people in the café. All our money goes back to the community,” Fred said.

“Since November last year we have had to operate under a cinema licence, which means 40% of admission fees go to the movie distributors, so raising the prices at the gate won’t necessarily raise our profits.

“Then there’s the rental of the movie which can cost up to $2000 at a time. The movies are on 35mm which has to be made, shipped and then set up by a qualified projectionist.

“Sadly 35mm is dying out as distributors don’t want the expense of printing the film, storage and shipping. It’s just easier and better for them to send us a hard drive, which then

gets uploaded to the projector for screening. “Distributors also require the movie to be shown to a certain standard, hence the need for the digital projector, to protect the integrity of the industry, so we need to raise this money or there won’t be any movies to screen.”

Current movies such as ‘Smurfs 2’ and ‘Planes’ are only available digitally in Australia, so the days are numbered for the film format.

Fred has launched a fundraising website and is hoping the community will get behind it. The drive in is offering a heap of incentives for people to contribute including free food, advertising, mugs, and lots more.

With nearly 10,000 Ipswich people liking the drive-in’s Facebook page, the countdown is on.

“Even if only half of those Facebook likers gave us $20, we’d have the money to get the projector. We have to get the order in by the end of October with at least half of the money to secure it, and so far we’ve raised about $12,000. It has to go in by the end of November so we can screen movies over the summer,” Fred said.

“Hopefully by mid October we will know if we have the funds to place the order.”

Consideration has been given to borrowing the money and raising ticket prices but the cinema wants to keep attendance affordable, so fundraising is the best option.

The Federal seat of Blair is now the safest Labor held seat in Queensland with a margin of 5.3 per cent.

This result shows how important it is to keep in touch with local people and local issues, and I will continue to do that through this next term.

I will fight hard to make sure the projects the previous Government had budgeted for and announced in our campaign are carried out, including the Centenary Sports Hub in Springfield, upgrades to the Willowbank Raceway and Lowood Pool, additional funding for Ipswich Hospice Care and Ipswich Rugby League, the Toogoolawah Condensery Arts and Cultural Precinct and Kilcoy Futures Project.

I would like to acknowledge and praise the Australian Electoral Commission locally who worked hard to maintain the democratic process. Unlike many parts of the world, Australian elections are carried out without one shot being fired, and governments change with peace and stability.

A lot of that is due to the great work of the AEC. They are dedicated to ensuring we all understand our rights, to keeping the rolls up to date and to making our elections transparent and efficient.

On the 14th September I held my first mobile office after the Federal election the previous weekend. Last weekend I attended the Somerset Live Love Buy Local Festival as well as the Riverview Multicultural Festival where I held by second mobile office.

‘Mystery Road’ leads to Ipswich

The movie has an amazing cast, with Hugo Weaving, Jack Thompson, Ryan Kwanten, and Bruce Spence to name just a few, but the lead is the most coveted role, and that is held by Aaron Pederson.

‘Mystery Road’ stars Pederson as Jay Swan, an indigenous detective who returns to his outback hometown to solve the murder of a teenage girl whose body is found under the highway trucking route out of town.

“I did pinch myself when I saw the cast for this film,” Aaron told Ipswich Life. “It was the goal of the director all along, he wanted strong characters in the movie, and he really stuck to his guns in chasing the people he wanted for each role.

“He handed the roles to the actors, there was no audition process, and I think that made a major part in the films strength in that those actors brought their own stories to each role. Everybody is amazing in ‘Mystery Road’.”

Aaron was always first in line for the role, as writer/director Ivan Sen began developing the idea in 2006, and always wanted Aaron in the role.

“The script was written with me in mind, I was very touched by that. I was grateful for it, and what was on the page is what ended up on the screen. It was a great journey for myself and I loved seeing this jigsaw world come together. It was the role of a lifetime as far as I’m concerned.

“There is a human side to my character, but when you’re acting with the likes of Jack Thompson and Bruce Spence you have to pinch yourself. I told Jack it was my ‘Marlon Brando’ moment, I told him it was a great opportunity to work with such an actor and storyteller. In one short scene

you get to know his character, his background and its such an immaculate performance. Never before have I seen a character’s life emerge in just one moment. Working with this many great actors was for me a great opportunity. I was respectful of that, it was a moment I’ll never forget, and I’ll never get to do anything like this again.”

Filmed in Winton, Moree and Ipswich, viewers will enjoy seeing Ipswich on the screen, along with the incredible Queensland outback sunsets which star in the film.

“Many of the scenes feature those amazing sunsets, and we had to do them in a twenty minute window. It was a different

type of filmmaking experience, we’d do a scene then get told ‘see you all tomorrow at the same time’. It was tricky, but it worked and it looks amazing on screen.

“From memory, we filmed in Ipswich at the old police station and the chinese restaurant in Top of Town, I think we were there about four to six days all up. We had a four week hiatus inbetween Ipswich and Winton as we had to wait for Hugo Weaving to be available, then went to Moree to finish the final scenes.”

The film has been called a western for a 2013 audience, and Aaron thinks it’s a tag that many will like or loathe.

“It has that western feel to it, it’s a selling point of course, but if it was made in the city it wouldn’t be an issue. This is a story set in the outback, with big horizons, big sunsets and it just has that ‘western’ look to it, and of course most characters have hats on. Aesthetically is was interesting in that even though there is only one horse in it, my horse is my car, I’m in and out of it through the movie. For us it was about selling ‘Mystery Road’ to the world, not just to Australia and I’m sure people from all walks of life will get something different out of it.”

Mystery Road opens in cinemas everywhere from October 17.

Ipswich was abuzz last year when word spread that a movie was being made right in the heart of the city. The movie is ‘Mystery Road’, and viewers can play ‘spot the Ipswich location’ when it opens nationally this month.

fe Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said Ball Run would be part of the popular exhibition Construction Site, which will open at the Gallery on November 16.

“Ball Run is an interactive activity where children will be able to send rolling balls along or through a series of tubes and funnels until they reach the end,” Cr Pisasale said.

“Think of it like a maze where the challenge lies in creating a path for the ball to follow using familiar recycled materials.

“Children will be able to invent different runs every time so there’s a lot of creative-thinking involved, a lot of clever construction and a lot of fun.”

Items being sought for donation include cylindrical objects made from plastic and cardboard with diameters of at least 38 millimetres. All donated materials must be safe and clean.

“Mailing tubes, Perspex cylinders and PVC piping would all be great for Ball Run as well as cardboard boxes in different sizes and mesh than can be easily cut,” Cr Pisasale said.

“If you’re a business owner and have items like these piling up in your shop or warehouse, share in the spring cleaning spirit and donate your surplus materials to the Ipswich Art Gallery.”

Ipswich City Council has become part of a national network designed to raise an awareness of online safety in the community.

Councillor David Pahlke said Ipswich Libraries had joined the eSmart Libraries program taking advantage of a national roll-out of the program across Australia.

“eSmart Libraries is a cyber safety initiative funded through a partnership between The Alannah and Madeline Foundation and the Telstra Foundation in collaboration with 1500 public libraries Australia-wide and key industry bodies such as the Australian Library and Information Association,” Cr Pahlke said.

“eSmart aims to extend an awareness of cyber safety and wellbeing into the community, based on a model implemented through the eSmart Schools initiative.

“The eSmart Libraries program provides a solid framework of guideposts, tools and resources to equip Ipswich Libraries’ staff and community to develop the skills and knowledge to make smart, safe and

responsible use of online technologies. “The library is a community knowledge

hub, providing access to information and e-resources, lifelong learning opportunities and spaces for people to explore and learn.

“As such, it provides an ideal location for community members to gain practical skills to be safer online and avoid cyber risks such as scams and cyber bullying.”

Cr Pahlke said council was excited to have welcomed the eSmart Libraries program to Ipswich Libraries.

“We are keen to encourage and support the development and awareness of online safety for the Ipswich community and this program provides us an ideal way to achieve this aim.

“It is a great way of building the community’s awareness of ways to use online technologies in a safe manner and avoid cyber-risks.”

Cyber safety program launced

Blue Heeler Boots - making a differenceSupporting breast cancer awareness is the theme of the month at Blue Heeler Boots, and they will be fundraising during the entire month, including a special event on October 26.

The ABC News Ipswich Bureau officially opened recently in the old Police Beat offices in the Ipswich Mall.

The ABC has opened the office as part of a plan to cover news in growing areas like Ipswich, Western Sydney and Geelong, with bureaus opening in all three areas.

“Until now, the people of Ipswich and the Somerset Region have had to rely on Brisbane for their ABC news services,” said local member Mr Shayne Neumann.

“This bureau will allow the ABC to better serve the growing community of Ipswich by producing local content from facilities based in Ipswich.

“Every day, thousands of people living in Ipswich and the Somerset Region access the news and current affairs, sport and entertainment provided by the ABC across their television, radio and digital platforms.”

Mr Neumann congratulated the local ABC news team of Eric Tlozek and Courtney Wilson, who have been working in the region for the past month.

“Eric and Courtney have made a significant contribution to the provision of local content on the ABC already.

“I’m looking forward to seeing a greater profile for our region and will fight to ensure it is adequately funded into the future.”

ABC News Ipswich Bureau will prepare and deliver stories for TV News, radio news and for the state and national pages of ABC News Online. They will produce content that is relevant to local audiences and focus on local issues.”

ABC journalist Eric Tlozek said that the Ipswich office is part of a big expansion for the national broadcaster.

“This is an expanded coverage initiative for the ABC, as we now also have people in places like Bunbury, Bundaberg and Toowoomba which have been television black holes for many years. The ABC wanted to improve regional coverage, especially in fast growing areas which have traditionally been underserved. Our job is to find stories in Ipswich that have national implications and national appeal.”

Producer Courtney Wilson grew up in Ipswich, knows the area well, and is excited about being back in her hometown.

“There’s lots going on, as we cover Logan, Ipswich and the Scenic Rim so it’s a big patch. The feedback we’ve had already from people is that its good to see a TV crew here for positive stories, not just crime. That’s something that’s really cool about our job, we don’t have to get in, get out and air stories that night. This time we will look at the part of the game that I find most club golfers struggle with…Bunkers

Do you leave the ball in the bunker? Do you catch it thin and hit it striaght into the lip or sail it over the green?

I believe that the average golfer makes it far more difficult than it needs to be. I see the only changes to the bunker shot being the surface (sand) and the fact that we are trying to make contact with sand first instead of the ball.

Note: For this technique explanation we are all going to assume that the player is using the correct wedge loft and bounce for the particular sand and shot they are playing. If you are unsure, consult your local club pro on what lofts and bounce options.

The following is my bunker technique, which I coach with very good, consistent results for the average club golfer.

First, set up square to the target with the club face square. This makes it much easier to align yourself correctly, determine ball position and it eliminate the need to compensate for directional issues.

Secondly, to find the impact position, ensure that the shaft of the club is vertical

at address, meaning, no shaft lean toward or away from the target (90 degrees from the ground).

Now we have found the bottom or base of the swing arch where we want the club to return to at impact, position the ball 2 inches in front of the club face. Now we are ready to make a swing.

From this position it very important to remain stable with minimal body movement. Instead of watching the ball, focus on the point where you wants he club to hit the sand. Allow the swing to move freely and accelerate the club head through the sand at impact. The acceleration will promote the release at impact getting the club back to square and allowing the club work more efficiently through the sand.

I challenge you to try this technique to see if it simplifies your approach to the bunker shot. Maybe then you can start to concentrate on direction and distance control instead of freaking out every time your ball is headed for the beach.Luke Prosser Head PGA Golf Professional Gailes Golf Club

Moving Year 7 to high school follows other major changes, such as raising the school starting age by six months in 2008 and the introduction of a Prep year in 2007. By 2015 Year 7 students will be in their eighth year of schooling and more than half will turn 13, the accepted age to begin high school.

This year, state high schools have introduced Junior Secondary for students in Years 8 and 9 (and Year 7 from 2015).

Junior Secondary recognises that young teens have different learning and social needs and it will provide the supportive environment these students need as they transition to high school.

Twenty state schools will pilot Year 7 in a secondary setting before 2015, to ensure the schools’ transition is smooth.

Murrumba State Secondary College was the first state high school to welcome Year 7 students when it opened its doors in January 2012.

Nineteen more schools from across the state joined the pilot program in 2013.

Pilot schools will share their first-hand knowledge and experience with other schools as they prepare for the statewide move of Year 7 in 2015.

They will coordinate closely with local primary schools and work together to develop programs that support Year 7 students.

With 2014 only a matter of weeks away, now is a good time to consider schooling for next year and beyond, so don’t hesitate to contact schools near you and see them in action. It is one of the most important decisions in life.

Good Shepherd Primary School, Springfield Lakes, welcomed Archbishop Mark Coleridge to bless and officially open Stage 1 of its new buildings.

Our Lady of the Southern Cross Parish Priest Father Mauro Conte joined Archbishop Coleridge for the blessing ceremony before State Member for Algester Anthony Shorten helped him to officially open the facilities designed to give students the best possible contemporary learning experiences.

Archbishop Coleridge said the strong Catholic tradition of blessing buildings was done to recognise that where they stood was holy ground.

Foundation Principal Judith Seery said it was a blessing to have Archbishop Coleridge celebrate with them on such a historic occasion.

“I just hope that our school continues to flourish in the way it has since we accepted our first students at the beginning of the year,” she said.

Executive Director of Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) Pam Betts told those gathered how satisfying it was to see the dreams of so many come to fruition.

She reminded the schools they were part of a wider community of 137 schools and colleges administered by BCE.

“There is great strength in this community,” she said.

She thanked the Commonwealth and State Government for their support and

recognition of Catholic education.“We are grateful for the recognition by both

Commonwealth and State Governments, of the important contribution which non-government schooling, and in particular Catholic schooling, makes to our Australian society,” she said.

The school, located on the corner of Springfield Central Boulevard and Grande Avenue and serving the rapidly-growing areas of Springfield Lakes, New Beith and Greenbank, will continue to expand with new facilities coming on line each year. Applications for 2014 are now open.

Here’s some tips that we’ve found will help you get up fresher and ready to go each morning.1. Keep regular hours. Going to bed and getting up at roughly the same time, all the time, will programme your body to sleep better. Keep your routine constant, even on the weekends! Try not to wake up more than two hours after your regular time.2. Make sure your bed is comfortable. It’s difficult to get restful sleep on one that’s too soft, too hard, too small or too old. Invest in a mattress that will provide you many years of quality sleep. Also, make sure your pillows to are conducive to your needs.3. Take more exercise. Regular, moderate exercise can help relieve the day’s stresses and strains. But not too close too bedtime or it may keep you awake!4. Cut down on stimulants such as caffeine in tea or coffee - especially in the evening. Have a hot milky drink or herbal tea instead.5. Don’t over-indulge. Finish eating 2-3 hours before bedtime. This will give your

body time to digest your food and lower your risk of indigestion. Too much food or alcohol, especially late at night, just before bedtime, can play havoc with sleep patterns.6. Don’t smoke. Yes, it’s bad for sleep, too: smokers take longer to fall asleep, wake more often, and have more sleep disruption.7. Try to relax before going to bed. Have a warm bath, listen to quiet music, do some yoga - relax both the mind and body.8. Deal with worries or workload by making lists of things to be tackled the next day.9. If you can’t sleep, don’t lie there worrying. If you don’t fall asleep after 30 minutes get up and read or listen to soft music until you feel sleepy - then go back to bed.10. Create a sleeping environment. A cool, dark, quiet room is the most conducive for a good night’s sleep. Some people will find it helpful to have some kind of white noise in the background. A fan or a radio can provide enough sound to block out any unwanted noises. 18 degrees Celsius is the ideal sleeping temperature.11. Eat a well-balanced diet. Studies show that a proper diet will help you get a more restful night’s sleep. Too much sugar can make it harder for your body to slow down.

Modern Family won the Emmy for Best Comedy series (for the fourth consecutive year) and Jim Parsons picked up his third Emmy for Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Sheldon Cooper in Big Bang Theory.

by Ipswich Life reader Sharon BlackRush is not just a film for lovers of motorsport. You don’t even have to know much about motorsport to enjoy it, as it’s about people engaged in one of sport’s great rivalries.

Directed by Ron Howard, it is based on the lives of Formula One drivers James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl), commencing in their early days of Formula 3 racing and culminating in their epic battle for the 1976 Formula One World Championship.

Hemsworth is cast as the glamorous English playboy, as is Bruhl as the dour, technically obsessed Austrian who carefully assesses his risks. The rivalry between Hunt and Lauda is an enthralling one, each literally defying death to gain supremacy over the other. The film reminds viewers just how deadly Formula One was back in those days - and in some aspects, continues to be. This is captured no

more so than by Lauda’s horrific accident at the Nurburgring racetrack in Germany. His astonishing return just 42 days later at Monza in Italy was truly inspiring. Be warned, there are a couple of scenes in hospital that may be a little too much for some - and I am not referring to those involving Hemsworth and the nurse he wins over seconds after arrival!

The story is told mostly from Lauda’s perspective, but really their stories are so intertwined. The way the characters are developed, allows you to connect with them both equally and have you celebrating their highs and really feeling their lows.

WHAT’S ONTalking BeerWith summer on the horizon, everyone is ready for a change. This may have arrived in the form of a company trying something different - Brookvale Union. Although I had never heard of them, I was still excited to hear about their new Alcoholic ginger beer and Apple Cider.

With the tagline “Quality Nonsense” I wasn’t sure what exactly to expect. For starters, the design that has gone into the label is an immediate eye catcher. The ginger beer features what appears to be some form of hybrid god-like figure, and the cider appears to be a cider shack levitating in the clouds. Topped off (no pun intended) by a creative and utterly brilliant designed bottle cap. By the time I had seen the bottles I ‘needed’ to drink them!!

The ginger beer is a delightful mix of spicy ginger flavour and a smooth after taste that makes you want more. It’s best served with ice to keep it as cold as possible for those warm summer days. At only 4%abv, this is sure to be a hit. Matched with a Grilled Roo salad on the Yamanto Tavern menu, which shares a touch of ginger, would make for a nice taste alignment. The cider has a whole different feel to it, crisp but not too sour, with a touch of sweetness, an easy drinking 5.2% abv will please all. Paired with a Crisp pork belly, the flavours from mustard Jus adds to the enjoyment of this “beery” cider. Both come in 500ml bottles and 12 pack cartons.

Possibly the icing on the cake for these two drinks is a tounge-in-cheek reference which says (possibly produced by 4 Pines Brewing Co.) typically a beer only company, suggesting they had a hand in creating the new Cider and Ginger Beer.

Traditionally these biscuits are sandwiched together with jam and iced but my Irish granny would often make this recipe into a slice which is just as morish. For the bake sale we decided to make them into a jam drop of sorts and were a huge hit. However if you choose to bake them, you won’t be disappointed.

Ingredients125g Butter (Softened)75g Brown Sugar1tsp Cinnamon1tsp Ground Ginger1 Egg225g Plain Flour1tsp Baking PowderRaspberry Jam

Icing2 rounded tbsp Butter (Softened)2 tbsp Raspberry Cordial2 Cups Icing Sugar (Sifted)Desiccated CoconutTurn oven to 180c and prepare oven trays with baking paper. In a bowl cream together Butter, Brown Sugar, Cinnamon and Ground Ginger. Then beat in the egg. Stir in the plain flour, along with the baking powder.Form your mixture into a log and cool in a fridge for 1/2 an hour. Remove from the fridge and cut into 1cm slices.Lay on a baking tray and push a thumbprint into each biscuit. Fill with 1/2 tsp of jam and bake in for 15-20 minutes.Remove from the oven, allow to cool and begin making icing by mixing together the butter, cordial and icing sugar.Once you biscuits are ready, ice around the jam and dunk them in the desiccated coconut. Have with a cuppa and a good book.

Apprenticeships Queensland took care of the sausage sizzle which also helped raise more money for the event. The 500km run began on September 16 and took the team until 12:30pm on September 20 to complete, and over the last few years has raised over $53,000 with this years total still being counted.

Runner Richard O’Connell said that this was his third time doing the run, and said it was quite easy to find volunteers to take part.

“There were a few of us from last year, and we need a few more who quickly realized that it is hard going, but when you compare it to someone who is suffering cancer and what they go through….what we deal with is nothing.

“We ran up to nine hours a day, and the hardest part was the never ending hills between here and Bundaberg. Ones that go up and down for kilometers are the ones that

you get tired of,” Richard said.“You need to keep a fast pace all day, up to

110 kilometres in one day, and we are hoping to reach the $15,000 mark in donations this year.

“I started doing this in Adelaide, when my

aunt was diagnosed with cancer and when I moved to Amberley I started it up here, but sadly I’m being transferred back down south, so I am hoping it will continue on in 2014 without me, and I know there are people already talking about doing it again!

“I plan to do something similar in Sydney so I’m keen to start it down there. A back2base run in every state would be ideal.”

A significant event each year is the day when the ‘Pathfinder’ and Boston Bomber veterans visit RAAF Amberley to present awards for excellence to current serving airmen.

This year’s 82 Wing Association Day brought together more than 100 RAAF and Association members to reflect on the traditions of some of the Air Force’s oldest and most distinguished bomber squadrons.

The Association Day commenced with a memorial serice and laying of wreaths at the Memorial Garden at RAAF Base Amberley followed by the presentation of trophies to members of 82 Wing for their outstanding performance over the last twelve months.

Pathfinder and Boston bomber squadrons served in various theatres of war during World War II, with many losses of life. Associations Day also provides the opportunity to remember and commemorate those airmen who paid the ultimate price for their country.

Each year, the ‘ranks’ of the veteran airmen reduce but the spirit of air power lives on in the current airmen in RAAF squadrons.

Young women try Air Force lifeYoung women with an interest in aviation and a taste for excitement had the chance to experience Air Force life during a four-day Flight Camp at RAAF Base Amberley recently. . The young women, aged between sixteen and eighteen years of age, come from the Brisbane and Ipswich region. The dynamic program included attending mission briefings, participating in leadership activities and having hands-on flying experience, including flying an Air Force simulator and in an Air Force aircraft.Flying Officer Simone Batcher, a KC-130A pilot of 33 Squadron said the objective was to give the girls an overview of the capabilities of the aircraft and the Air Force generally.

“During the week at Amberley they will experience a number of facets of Air Force life. We will show them what the squadron is all about and the flight will show them the role of the KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport.Having discovered flying more than 10 years ago Simone was able to give the girls a firsthand account of what it was like to be an Air Force pilot.“I don’t think of being female is that big of a deal as an Air Force pilot; I’ve always enjoyed being around like-minded people with a sense of adventure that you get in aviation,” Simone said. “I just want to meet the standards required of everyone else, and I encourage these young women to go for their dreams.”

One of the girls taking part is Renee Rathbone, a Grade 11 boarder at Ipswich Girls Grammar School, who holds an intense fascination with flying, and has done for a number of years.“When the jets flew over home I always looked up and when I came to IGGS I would see the RAAF aircraft from Amberley fly over, and I would just be in awe of them,” Renee said.“I’m hoping to attend ADFA or as a direct entry Air Combat Officer, flying F/A-18F Super Hornets or the E-7 Wedgetail aircraft. I’ve done my research and I know the direction I want to go.“My mum was a bit surprised at first, as no one in our family had gone that way, but they are supporting me.”

The new Government has a big agenda, announcing a tax review, a financial services review, a competition review, and a review of Government spending.

Importantly, the Government has said that it will consult with and wants to hear from the people of Australia. This is a smart move - the expectation of a Coalition victory last week was cause in itself for improvements in confidence, and when confidence is lifted, so is spending and other factors that bolster economic activity.

So this new government brings the promise of change, but how, when, and where will they start? I wonder which changes the general public would put through. What would these people urge on the new government if they had the access and influence? What would you say to our new Treasurer, Joe Hockey, if you could spend the next month as his adviser?

Firstly, I wouldn’t assume Joe wouldn’t listen: he grew up in a family

of small business owners and understands the plights of the average

Australian well. This is already evident in the

commitment to reducing company tax rate by 1.5% and cutting regulatory

burden on business.

I did a quick survey on Twitter, and most people think there’s too many of them and that they’re too high. But which ones would you reduce, which would you scrap and which part of the system would you reform?

Most people understand that the political stability and regulatory structure we operate doesn’t come free. That means the tax system has to raise requisite amounts of cash before it concerns itself with fairness or efficiency. It’s a balancing act.

It’s the same with red tape. We all want an easier way of operating our businesses and creating the best possible opportunities for our families, but what red tape do we advise Joe Hockey to cut? What regulation actually makes sense and where are we tied up in unnecessary bureaucracy? When you start cutting the red tape, where do you stop?

Competition is another agenda item that affects us all. Market dominance by large conglomerates can hurt smaller businesses, which generally means that prices rise and choice reduces. This affects both business owners and consumers in industries from banking to manufacturing to supermarkets.

I worked with the Treasurer when he was Minister for Financial Services and I can tell you that this guy is not only smart and experienced, he listens.

Toyota Financial Services (TFS) says its recently launched finance innovation, Toyota Access, has gained more than 10,000 customers in ten months - beating initial sales projections.

Analysis of customer data since the launch of the novel ownership product - which guarantees the future value of the vehicle - reveals that it is attracting conquest customers from other car brands to Toyota showrooms.

Some Toyota Dealers are reporting that more than 50 per cent of their finance customers are choosing Toyota Access. Divisional Manager National Sales at Toyota Motor Corporation Australia, Scott Thompson, said the Guaranteed Future Value concept at the heart of Toyota Access is paying dividends for dealers and consumers alike.

“Our research shows that among customers also considering other motor vehicle brands, almost 60 per cent rated Toyota Access as a big influence over their purchase decision,” Mr Thompson said. “This product is attracting new customers to the Toyota brand by allowing them to buy a car they might not have otherwise been able to afford.”

General Manager Strategic Planning and Marketing at TFS, George Cornwell, said Toyota Access was winning customers by meeting consumer demand for a low deposit, low repayment loan with the certainty of a Guaranteed Future Value.

Toyota Access works by deducting a customer’s deposit from the amount to be financed and deferring to the end of the contract an amount equivalent to the Guaranteed Future Value*.

The maximum term is four years (48 months) and the contract is subject to fair wear and tear guidelines and agreed kilometres being met.

At the end of the contract period, owners can upgrade to a new Toyota, or simply pocket the difference if the market value of their Toyota is higher than the Guaranteed Future Value.

Alternatively, they can pay or refinance the Guaranteed Future Value and keep their car, or hand back the car to their dealer and

walk away with no more to pay^. Mr Cornwell said, “The ability to trade-in, upgrade or sell while having financial peace of mind is proving very compelling for consumers.

The next-generation Ford Mustang has been confirmed for Australia to become the Blue Oval brand’s new hero car from 2015 onwards.

Ford Australia announced the expected news at a special Go Further event held in Sydney, where the company reiterated its commitment to the local market beyond 2016 when it will cease homegrown manufacturing.

It will be the first time a Ford Mustang has been sold officially in Australia since the 1960s, although in 2001 and 2002 Tickford Vehicle Engineering converted a number of ‘Pony’ cars to right-hand drive for the local market.

The 2015 Ford Mustang will be factory-built right-hand drive, however, and is set to be more affordable than those conversions, however, which were priced from $85,000 for the coupe and $89,000 for the convertible.

“Mustang is coming to Australia and New Zealand,” said Jim Farley, Ford’s executive vice president of global marketing, sales and service. “The car has a unique connection with customers. It speaks to who we are – allowing you to enjoy the freedom of the journey like never before,” he added.

“One Ford is opening the door for Australians and consumers around the world to our best-ever portfolio of vehicles, giving them new reasons to look again at Ford. The Ford Mustang is one of these vehicles.”

The introduction of the Ford Mustang has been enabled by the famous American muscle car joining the company’s One Ford program that sees a single Ford built for global markets not just one.

It’s the same program that killed the Falcon back as January 2010, when Ford boss Alan Mulally said the One Ford policy would be applied to the company’s large cars.

Ford’s large car for the future will be the Taurus, but Ford Australia looks set to use the next-generation Mondeo as a car that will straddle both the medium and large car markets locally.

Ford Australia has announced the much-anticipated Ford Everest, the seven-seater SUV based on the Ranger and like the ute designed and developed for global markets.It also previewed the last ever Ford Falcone ahead of its release in the second half of 2014.

The all-new sports car is expected to switch from a live rear axle to independent rear suspension. The next Pony car is set to be unveiled at the 2014 New York motor show in April – marking the car’s 50th anniversary.
