See Speed Increased The authority pointed out that the automatic signal system makes for greater speed and safety and allows the operation of more trains. According to an authority spokesman the system called "route interlocking" elim- inates the operation by a tower- man of 18 to 20 levers. With new car equipment and the modern signalling, running time between Rockaway and Manhattan is ex- pected to be reduced as much as 22 percent. With the new system a train route can be set up by operating a button at the entrance of a route. A.second button is operat- ed for the selected exit point. All switches and signals along the route are then operated automat- ically. Interlocking groups a switch and signal together in a given area and allows a tower- man to control train movement. It represents a significant safety guard, according to the author- ity, since the towerman cannot clear a track where an unsafe factor exists. Another train on the track, or the improper opera- tion of switches because of mechanical defect were given as examples of jsuch unsafe factors. The contract which the author- ity approves calls for the fur- nishing and Installation of hlock signalling on the Liberty avenue line from Euclid avenue to Pitkin avenue yards in Brooklyn, to Lef- ferts avenue in Queens and on the Rockaway line from Liberty avenue to south of the North Channel drawbridge.
