Real Life Israel (RLI) is the Masa department of the Sachlav Group. RLI is a Masa organizer
which provides internship and research programs ranging from six and a half weeks to five months.
The Israel Public Diplomacy Program (IPD) is a Semester Abroad program in Israel. As an Israel
Public Diplomacy Ambassador you will learn both the theoretical and practical aspects of Public Diplomacy. The IPD lecturers are all experts in their respective subjects, and currently work and teach in those fields.
• A semester’s worth of credits from Gratz College, transferrable to US universities and colleges for either undergraduate or graduate degrees (Note: you must consult your academic advisor to approve the credit transfer)*
• Five 4-day seminars in historical and strategic locations throughout the country• Sessions run by Stand With US and Honest Reporting• Public diplomacy seminars held by representatives of Israel’s Ministry of
Foreign Affairs• Meetings with representatives from different communities around the country,
including settlers,Palestinian Arabs and activists from both sides of the conflict who will help you understand the situation from many points of view
• An opportunity to work on an Individual Public Diplomacy Project• A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a difference!
The IPD program offers five extensive seminars, each taking part in different regions of Israel starting Wednesday morning and ending on Saturday night. Each seminar will explore the toured region, allowing participants to gain a deep understanding of its various aspects.
One full day every two weeks will be dedicated to working on your individual project. The project, which is graded, can be about any topic related to public diplomacy or public policy. Each Ambassador will work on the project continuously throughout the semester and present it at the end of term. The project can be in any format, for instance a video, research paper, PowerPoint presentation, educational activity kit etc. Upon completion, all projects will be made available to any person or organization that wishes to use it for their purposes. This ensures that the projects reach their full potential and have an impact far beyond the course itself.
IPD Ambassadors get the opportunity to study 6 courses in Israel in English and receive 18 university credits from Gratz College, Pennsylvania. It’s a very hands-on program, with a lot of travelling and meetings with important personalities.
The IPD program provides students from all religious, political, professional and personal backgrounds with the tools and knowledge to confidently and accurately present the facts in a positive manner. The 4-day seminars allow you to increase your knowledge of and appreciation for Israel, and the foreign experience you acquire here will be invaluable to you as you graduate from university and start your career.*Credits from Gratz College have always been accepted for transfer to other US universities and colleges. However, you must obtain approval from your academic advisor.

This course will examine a wide variety of negotiation strategies and challenges. We negotiate all the time in different ways; when negotiation becomes more difficult and stressful, even threatening, we tend to rely on our prior patterns, experience and intuitions. This course will focus on the negotiation process to reach better outcomes, taking into account the levels of stress and anxiety without forgetting the “day after“. During the course you will learn, observe and experience a variety of approaches and strategies for negotiation that will enrich your knowledge and toolbox for different situations and circumstances.
Taught by Ari Appelbaum (3 credits)This course provides an analytical framework and historical facts which enables students to grasp some of the complexities of the Arab-Israeli conflict and to articulate those complexities to others. At the end of this course students will understand the key events shaping the Arab-Israeli conflict, recognize the various narratives about the wars of 1948, 1967 and the Oslo peace process, be able to articulate to others the complexities of the conflict and be able to discuss various possible solutions and the obstacles to reaching them.

In modern times it is essential to possess the ability to perform adequately in front of an inquiring audience. This course is designed to equip students with an understanding and the skills to better plan, prepare and present speeches on contemporary subjects and enhance their critical thinking regarding speeches and speakers, with an emphasis upon persuasive speaking. Attention will be given to specialized forms of public address. During the course the students will learn, practice and discuss how to deliver a message that is not merely understood by their listeners, but also be well-remembered by them.

Taught by Neil Lazarus (3 credits)This course provides an experience-based introduction to the power of propaganda and its ability to influence mass public opinion. By examining the history of propaganda, students will develop an ability to both recognize governmental manipulation as well as develop critical thinking skills to guard against it.
Taught by Heidi Eisips (3 credits)No matter what your walk of life, it is crucial to understand your audience, define the product or service you are delivering to that audience, and decipher the best ways to reach them with your message. This course provides a hands-on, interactive introduction to marketing theory and its real-world application. All case studies feature Israeli companies and the context in which they operate. Companies are located in each of the regions which will be visited during the five extended-weekend study trips.
This course will quickly and efficiently teach you the basic Hebrew skills you need for day-to-day life in Israel. Emphasis will be placed on conversational skills, and you will acquire a rich vocabulary as well as learn basic grammar. By reading and studying texts about Israeli and Jewish history and culture your reading skills will improve, as will your knowledge of Israel and Judaism.

Michael Tsur is the Academic Director of the Israel Public Diplomacy Program. Michael is a lawyer and an expert in negotiation, conflict resolution, crisis management and mediation. He specializes in executive coaching of general managers, general directors and owners of companies in Israel and around the globe, working in particular on how to navigate complex negotiations and situations. Tsur is the founder and general-director of the Mediation & Conflict Resolution Institute-Jerusalem.

Ari holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications & Journalism and Islam & Middle-East Studies from Hebrew University and a Master of Arts degree in Security and Diplomacy from Tel Aviv University. In his current role as the Director of Israel Operations at The David Project, Ari is in charge of all aspects of the organization’s work in Israel. This includes overseeing operations and budget, strategic partnerships with other organizations and all educational programming.
American-born Heidi Livingston Eisips received her BA in English Literature from UC Berkeley and her MBA from Yale University. She is the founder and principal of Korala Consulting, a strategic marketing consultancy. A seasoned high tech veteran with over twenty years of international experience, Heidi helps organizations achieve breakthrough results through strategy, social media and sustainability initiatives. Heidi originally immigrated to Israel in 1993, and currently resides in Hod HaSharon.
Born in Britain, Neil received his BA in Political Science at the University of Wales. He immigrated to Israel in 1988 and soon after received his Master’s Degree at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has been working with public diplomacy for years, among other things giving seminars about Israel advocacy, as well as training others in how to do political advocacy for Israel. Neil’s client list is extensive and includes The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Israeli Ministry of Tourism, Jewish Federations, JCRCs, Sky TV, Harvard University Extension Courses in Israel, Yad Vashem, Hillel, Birthright and The Jewish Agency for Israel, and many more.
What does the Israel Public Diplomacy Program have to offer me?
The Israel Public Diplomacy Program is designed to blend theory and practice, and the six courses the Ambassadors take during the semester all reflect this. You will also work on an Individual Project, which is a semester-long assignment on any public diplomacy related topic. The program includes five extensive seminars (one every month), which start on Wednesday morning and end on Saturday night. Each seminar takes place in a different region of Israel. All seminars will cover the following aspects of the explored regions: the area’s historical background, Jewish heritage and other local cultures and religions, political and demographic challenges, social and business entrepreneurship. When should I apply?
We have rolling admission, and you may apply at any time. However, your chances of being accepted increase the earlier you apply, as there are a limited number of spaces each semester. We have two semesters a year; the upcoming Fall semester is August 28th – December 25th.
How do I apply?
To begin the application process, please fill out an application form and complete the essay. After you have submitted these two documents, please send us a copy of your resume/CV. In the email, please include the following information: the name of the university you are currently studying at, the name of the degree you are studying towards and what year you are in. Please send the information to: [email protected] with “Israel Public Diplomacy” in the subject line.
Who is the program for?
The Israel Public Diplomacy program is open to anyone interested in public diplomacy. It is especially useful for American university students, who can use the credits towards either their undergraduate or graduate degrees. What makes this program unique?The IPD program offers a combination of courses that cannot be found elsewhere, as well as lecturers who are experts in their various fields. The IPD program gives its Ambassadors the opportunity to immerse themselves in Israeli society while learning both the theoretical and practical aspects of Public Diplomacy.

What is the Individual Project?
The Individual Project is a public diplomacy project which the Ambassadors will work on throughout the semester, and present at the end of term. The projects can take any form (video, research paper, PowerPoint presentation, educational activity kit etc.) All the projects are entered into a database, and are made available to any person or organization wishing to use it for their purposes.
What is the cost of the program?
The program tuition is $8,200 without accommodation or $9,900 including.There are grants available. For more information, click here
Can I transfer the credits I receive to my home university?
Yes! The credits you receive can be transferred to US universities and colleges, and be used towards either an undergraduate or graduate degree. *
