MESSAGE FRO
M THE PRINCIPAL
I would like to welcome you all back for another year a Traill, particularly all who are new to the
school. To all new students, I hope that you have settled in well and made new friends. To all new
parents, I hope that you are happy with the progress your child is making. If you have any
concerns at all, please do not hesitate to contact the School to arrange a meeting with myself,
Mrs Jane or the appropriate teacher. We value highly good communication between parents and
School: no problem of yours is ever too small. To all new staff, I hope that you have a long and
rewarding time at Traill. We have many new teachers, partly due to the relatively large numbers
of teachers who left at the end of their contracts last year and partly due to the expansion of the
school. There are full biographies on all the new teachers from page two of this newsletter.
I would like to say that we will do even better this year. We certainly will aim to, but I have to
admit that it will be a very high target. Parents from last year will know of the achievements
which the students had, and I will not dwell on those again: it was a very successful year, in all
areas. Nevertheless, there were naturally areas which we identified as needed improving and
they have either been improved or form part of our development plan for this coming year. The
year ended with the publication of the external examination results which were nothing short of
spectacular – certainly the best that I have known at Traill. We are very proud of all the students
who took their IGCSE, AS and A-Level examinations last June, but I would just like to highlight a
few very exceptional students:
Gem, who got an A* in all nine of her IGCSEs.
Poornima, who got 5 A* and 4 A grades for her IGCSEs.
Palm, who got A* in all three of her A-Levels and A in her AS-Level. She has taken up her place at
Durham University in the UK.
Taro, who got three A and one B at A-Level, and is taking a gap year off before applying to
university.
Will, you got one A* and two A at A-Level and has taken up his place at Imperial College in the UK
Simran, who got three A grades for her A-Levels and a B in her AS-Level. She has taken up her
place at Warwick University in the UK.
I am sure you will understand now why I said earlier that it will be difficult to improve on these
results, but we certainly won‟t stop trying.
There a very full Newsletter for this month, so I will now let you get on and read it. I wish you all a
very successful new academic year.
Mr. Gordon Espley- Jones, School Principal

Mr. Federico Santana, Football Coach Federico joined Traill in September 2014
I was born in La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. I lived most of my childhood between Argentina and Brazil with my family; a cross cultural experience that would lay the foundation for my development as a young man and an athlete. I would
soon embark on the most influential chapter of my life by taking a great leap to Miami, Florida where I was offered a
scholarship to play soccer at Florida Atlantic University and majored in Psychology. A successful college career would see me nominated to the NCAA Conference team of the year, propelling me towards the
next chapter of my life by eventually giving me the chance to fly to Germany and train with the German giant F.C.Bayern Munich. My share of luck in my good performance at Bayern opened the doors for my professional career. I would spend
three seasons in Germany, respectively in Berlin and Cologne. I would then be given the opportunity to further my international experience by spending sometime in Portugal and England, and would eventually arrive in Spain to spend
three seasons playing in the Spanish leagues; one in Valencia and two in the Canary Islands. My career would take yet another great leap, this time to Asia where I would spend over two seasons in the professional
league in Thailand, and where I would enjoy a successful spell as player-coach. Throughout my playing career I have had the great fortune of fulfilling my other passion by coaching academy teams in
each of the clubs I represented as a professional player, where I coached elite players of all ages and eventually received my UEFA coaching license from the German Football Association.
My experience with adaptation, my understanding of different cultures and group dynamics and my work within the top
football nations in the world, all strung together by my background in psychology, provides me with a great wealth of knowledge and expertise which I passionately transmit to the stars of tomorrow.

TRIPPING WITH YEAR 2
On the very first day of this month Year 2 went on
their first school trip. We went to the Mall to get a
smoothie from SQUEEZE. We enjoyed the long wait for
our order as two members of the SQUEEZE team were
working hard to make sure every child got the correct
smoothie! The smoothies were delicious and gave
many of us brain freeze, but we loved them. Take a
look at our exciting experience.
On the 16th September we opened the doors to our
Smoothie Café. Our mums and dads came to taste our
homemade smoothie designs.
If that wasn‟t enough we also went on a class trip to
Ancient Siam City as a stunning start to our second
topic this year, „Through the keyhole‟. We looked at
how people in Thailand used to live and saw clay
models being sculpted. It was a hot and fun day!

STRAW SKELETONS
Year 3b have been focusing on how the human body works. We have studied
about the organs and different types of skeletons. With a simple experiment we were able to find out how our rib cage helps protect our main organs. Students
built straw skeletons and had to protect an egg, preventing it from breaking and surviving a 1 meter fall.

AGES
Year 4 settled in really well this term. They have
enjoyed exploring new topics such as „Were the Dark
Ages Dark?‟ This topic looks at how Anglo Saxon‟s
settled in Britain after the Romans left, also how the
peace was disrupted by unwanted invaders from
another land, „The Vikings‟!
The children have investigated where these Viking
invaders came from, how they lived, the clothes and
weapons they used, and what became of them.
Here Angie, Mhon, and Agnes are painting
self-portraits as if they were Vikings.
Tuw and Pom Pom are using some creative
colours for their portraits.
The children also designed and made their
own Viking shields that are displayed in the
year 4 classroom.

SOLAR SYSTEM
This term, our Year 5 students have seriously engaged
in the study of our Solar System and… beyond! After a
successful show during a recent Primary School
Assembly, in which they presented everything they
know about the Moon, they completed their space
projects by making wide use of the school IT equipment
and resources. Each student either chose or was
assigned a topic to develop. Some of them focused on
planets and celestial bodies, others on space
exploration history. Then, they decorated their work by
adding paper rockets and drawings. The results are
visible on the Topic board inside our Primary 5
classroom. I am personally very proud of the efforts
they all have put in their projects. „To the stars‟ is
surely a stimulating topic to kick off term 1 in style.
Last but not least, we have been extensively practising
a number of moon-related songs, specifically focusing
our attention on „Man on the Moon‟ by the R.E.M.
Everybody seemed to enjoy our performance during
the assembly.

An Amazing Start to Year 6 2014-15!
Wow! What a busy start to the new academic year our
Year 6 has had!
Already we have been on one of our school trips – „An
artist‟s Walk‟, which allowed our students to link their
work in Geography to their work in Art. The students
completed pencil drawings of the local klong, which
they later added colour to, using watercolour
techniques.
In a new subject – Computer Science, the children
have been learning about computer languages. A
fun way to do this is to use our floor robots called
Bee Bots.
We are now building our own maps, setting challenges
for our class friends – can they program the Bee Bot
to successfully complete the route from start to
finish?
And this year we have introduced very special jobs
for our Year 6 students to aid them in developing
good responsibility and social interaction skills.
Welcome our Primary Head Boy and Girl (Boat and
Amy). They will be supporting the teachers, finding
the kindest students, the tidiest classrooms and
being in charge of our ‗caught you being good‘

And our Playground Pals – whose job it is to make all
play times fun!
To help these students and the Primary School,
Mrs. Traill, with the help of Mrs. Indra and Mrs.
Lillian, have bought us playground toys!
And finally…
Year 6 have been working closely with our

Spaghetti Machine Competition Time again!
Organised by the Melbourne School of Engineering,
The Amazing Spaghetti Machine Contest was
launched in 2011 as an annual competition for
school students in which knowledge and skills in
maths, science, engineering, and project
management are put to the test in the creation of a
'spaghetti machine‘ — the Italian term for an
overly complex machine or device that is used to
perform a relatively simple task.
This year our team to enter the com[etition is
Team Ratatouille which is made up by Timmy (yr9),
Connor (yr10), Jamie (yr10) and Sam (year 11).
The task for the competition is to turn on an
electric light. They will have till the 24th November

Towards the end of Term 3 Year 8
were studying about the impacts
of deforestation and the impact on
climate change in Geography. In
their groups they did a fabulous
job creating collaborative
presentations, videos, websites,
posters and some even set up a
stall to raise awareness about
products which contained palm oil
and explained the link between
palm oil plantations and
deforestation. Moved to action the
students then sent eight letters to
10 Downing Street, the home of the
British Prime Minister, explaining
their findings and asking the
British government to help raise
awareness about the problems
associated with climate change.

FROM THE PE DEPARTMENT
The U15 basketball team opened up their season by taking part in the Shrewsbury
International School annual invitational friendly tournament. The tournament had
8 teams and Traill international school U15 team came out of the first round
games by beating ISB and Harrow and losing to ASB.
In the semifinal Traill faced a very good team from BPS that stopped Traill
Journey in the tournament. In the 3rd place game, Traill overcame Shrewsbury
International School.
It was a great tournament for the team; they gained in maturity and experience.
The Traill U15 basketball team ended the tournament on a high note by being part
of the top 3 schools that attended the tournament.

On the 6th of September our U-19 boys opened up their
football season by taking part in the Phoenix friendship
football tournament. After coming second in group play they
advanced to the elimination round where they were eventually
defeated 1-0 by tournament favorites ISB in an exciting thriller
that saw ISB score in the final minutes. The boys put forward a
performance they could be proud of, specially considering that
most of them belonged to younger age groups.
On the 16th of Septembers our U-17 boys opened up their
BISAC season playing away @ ISB. They played a great game,
had many scoring situations outshooting ISB 15 to 4, yet where
unfortunate to go home with only a 1-1 draw as ISB tied late in
the second half.
On the 25th of September our U-19 boys took part in a friendly
game against TCIS, an exciting ten goal thriller that ended 5-5
and that saw both teams give it their all with tensions running
high inside the pitch. Once again a great performance by our
boys as they controlled the tempo of the game and had 60-
70% ball possession, scoring some good team and individual
goals.
On the 13th of September the our girls U-17 team opened up
their football season putting on a great performance @ the
Shrewsbury International football tournament. While having
trained only an hour in preparation for the tournament the
girls came together to upset many teams on their way to
achieving a bronze medal in the tournament.
On the 22nd of September our U-19 girls opened up their
BISAC season @ ISB upsetting the tournament giants 2-0. The
girls once again put on a great show of teamwork and hard-
work by nullifying ISB's attack while breaking down their
defense.

This year‘s Interhouse competition has got underway in
spectacular fashion with the basketball. As can be seen from
the match scores and, more importantly, the overall score, it
has been an extremely tight competition so far, and I hope this
will continue, not just with the basketball, but for all the other
competitions throughout the year.
The overall scores confirm how close the competition is and it
also shows that for the first time the U/9s (Years 3 & 4) will
be involved, playing mini-basketball. They will also be involved
in the football competition after half term.
I am looking forward to a really exciting Interhouse completion
this year.

Dear Parents,
Traill International School is proud to deliver The Duke of Edinburgh‘s International Award.
Traill School are now offering students the opportunity to take part in the International Award at Bronze level in Year 10. Fifteen students
have now begun their Bronze Award and are busy organising their Skill, Physical and Service activities. They will have the option to
continue the Award at higher level in Years 11 and 12 as they progress through the school. The Award will be launched to Year 11 students
soon, but places are limited and interested students will need to be organized and efficient in order to secure a place.
The International Award is perhaps the most prized extra-curricular program amongst employers and universities across the world,
especially in Europe and North America. This is because participation in the Award proves that a young person has taken on challenges
and has succeeded in their own personal journey of extra-curricular development. Being able to demonstrate a rounded breadth of
education is as important as achieving high grades in examinations. An International Award holder, at any level of the Award, can be proud
of their achievements and employers value what it represents in a person.
The Award
The Duke of Edinburgh‘s International Award is the world‘s leading youth achievement award, bringing together practical exper iences and
life skills to equip young people for life. Since it was founded in 1956 by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh (husband to Queen
Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom), over eight million young people have participated in the Award in over 140 countries and territories.
Traill International School is proud to offer the Award to young people aged 14 and over. We are offering the Bronze Award this year to
Y10 students at Traill. We have two Award Leaders, Dr Dan Marsh and Mrs Emma Marsh, who will support your child through their Award
program.
What is involved?
The Award is voluntary, non-competitive, enjoyable and balanced, and requires effort over time. There are three levels to the Award:
Bronze, Silver and Gold. Young people design their own Award program, set their own goals and record their own progress. They choose a
Service, Physical Recreation, Skills activity and go on an Adventurous Journey. The only person they compete against is themselves, by
challenging their own beliefs about what they can achieve.
The Award program runs on both Wednesday and Friday afternoons as part of the Traill ECA program. In order to be registered on the
Award and begin their training and activities, a small registration fee of 2000 Baht is payable. Once registered, a child can begin logging
their activities towards their Bronze Award.
If any parent has experience of the Award or is involved in activities they feel would be of benefit to the students, please get in touch with
Dr Dan who will be glad to discuss how we could work together.
Further information: more information on The Award can be found at www.intaward.org.
