Adult Mask with Ties – 2 Size OptionsSupplies for one mask:

*Prewash your fabric before you begin cutting your fabric.

Directions for cutting your fabric:Three fourths of a yard of 45” cotton fabric (27”) will be enough to make four masks.

Fold fabric in half with selvages (the finished edges) together. Cut two 1 ½ inch wide strips the full width of your fabric (42”). These will be the ties for one mask. If making four masks you will need six more strips.

Next cut a strip 14 ½ inches wide. Both the large and the small masks have the same measurement on the sides of the mask.

Now rotate your fabric a quarter turn so the 14 ½ inches is alongthe top and bottom. Now cut the desired size of mask that you want to make. I was able to cut one at 9 inches and another at 10 inches with very little waste. This will actually yield you 4 masks, two of each size.

Directions for sewing your mask:

Fold fabric in half, right sides of fabric together or printed sides together, lining up your two short sides. Pin edges together and stitch a ¼ inch seam. (On most machines this will be the edge of your presser foot.)

Turn right side out and press with seam on edge.

Directions to pleat the mask:

With the seam at the bottom and the fold at the top place a pin at these measurements on both sides, starting from the top:

Bring the top pin to the second pin, forming a pleat, and place a pin through all of the layers. Take the third pin to the fourth pin for the second pleat and pin through all layers. Continue with the fifth pin to the sixth pin. Do this on left and right sides of the mask. Remove excess pins.

It should look like this if properly pinned. Now you are ready to stitch a ¼ inch seam down both sides to hold them in place. This can be a little tricky due to the thickness with the pleats. Be sure to keep all edges together and lined up.

Directions for making the ties:

To make the ties take your 1 ½-inch strip and fold it in half lengthwise, printed side on the outside. Press with iron. It may be easier to just draw a line down the center and not press. Then open it up if you pressed a fold line and fold one raw edge to the center fold or to your drawn line. Press with iron. Then fold the other raw edge to the center fold or drawn line and press. On the short ends, turn them under ¼ inch and press. Now fold on the original center fold or drawn line so both raw edges are folded to the inside and pressed edges meet. Press with iron. Repeat these steps on the other tie.

Directions for completing the mask:

Find the center of one tie by folding it in half and marking the center point with a pin. Do the same thing on one side of the mask. Unfold the tie and with right sides together and raw edges even, stitch a ¼ inch seam just the length of the mask. This will make the next step easier since you will not have to worry about catching the backside of the tie when doing the last step. Do this to both sides.

Now bring the folded edge up and over the seam to the other side, lining up the folded edges of the tie. Pin in place. Sew close (1/8 of an inch or less) to the inside edge (edge away from the fold) the whole length of the tie. Do the same to the other side. Now you have a completed mask!
