Telematics provide a benefit to both Insurers and Drivers Insurers: Better risk assessment: risk profiles not anymore based on generic demographic data (gender, geographic, age, …) Fraud avoidance Avoid commoditization with providing feedbacks and advises to improve driving behavior Drivers: Opportunity to lower the cost of Insurance premium by adopting a safe driving behavior Drive Like a Girl is an example of an insurance product that came directly from the gender ruling. Launched in January by insurethebox, one of the United Kingdom’s leading insurance telematics companies, it offers young drivers a discount on their insurance after three months of having their habits monitored by a black box. In December 2012, NHTSA proposed to mandate the fitting of EDRs (Events Data recorders) in all light vehicles after September 2014, estimating that these EDRs cost only $20 per vehicle. NHTSA stipulates a minimum set of data that EDRs are required to record: • Vehicle speed, • Brake status, i.e. was it activated in the moments before the crash? • Crash forces at the moment of impact, • State of the engine throttle, • Airbag deployment timing and airbag readiness prior to the crash, • Seat belt status, i.e. was the vehicle occupant's seat belt secured? NB April 2014: "NHTSA will then begin working on a regulatory proposal that would require V2V devices in new vehicles in a future year, consistent with applicable legal requirements, Executive Orders, and guidance."...
