Message from the President

To Exist is to Change In this, the 21st Century, it is apparent that there are global social and economic changes occurring that impact the way IOA does business. Ostomy rehabilitation programs and initiatives that worked in the past needs to re-examined for it to work in this present scenario. Wi th corporate f inancia l sponsorships decreasing, the method by which IOA’s organizational operations are funded has changed. For IOA to continue as a viable organization it must react to these external factors.

As a result of working closely recently with Carlo Pezcoller and Di Bracken, visiting many countries of Asia and South America, I saw firsthand the plight of countless, unfortunate ostomates in the developing countries of these regions and recognized that their basic needs remain unchanged. I am sure the same conditions exist in many Eastern European countries as well. It has become apparent that IOA is having difficulty in meeting the varying needs of the global ostomy community. Due to a lack of resources, both financial and manpower, humanitarian programs necessary to address these needs have to be revised. This has been recognized by both the ostomy related commercial manufacturers and our allied professional partners, as well as by IOA's membership. It is imperative for IOA to examine the way it presently does business and to make those changes necessary for it to work efficiently to achieve its goal of the betterment of ostomates through out the world.

We, in IOA, have already started using Email meeting software for our IOA EC meetings so that we can use limited funds of IOA more efficiently & effectively. WORLD OSTOMY DAY MATERIAL

Both Coloplast and Hollister have provided us with information about their competitions for World Ostomy Day; the Coloplast Merit Award and the Hollister Photographic Competition. Both Coloplast and Hollister have carefully prepared promotional material as a means of advertising their support for World Ostomy Day and this material must not be changed.

There is a corporate image that our Partners in Industry present to the world at large. Legally one should never change the look of business material without permission from the person who originally did the design or the one who owns the rights.

The World Ostomy Day material is provided for the use of our member associations and may be used in your newsletters and your websites. When using the material there must be no changes made to the company logo or the information contained in the material.

It is acceptable to print the material in different page sizes as long as the content of the material remains as the original - in other words everything will be proportionally smaller or larger and there will be no changes to the printed material other than the size.

If you need, further information or clarification, please contact WOD Coordinator:

Peter McQueen [email protected].

THE FUTURE OF IOA

The IOA President has organized a Task-force to undertake a complete and thorough review of the workings of the International Ostomy Association. IOA needs to examine the relevancy of its Mission Statement to determine if it accurately describes the organization as it exists in the 21st Century. If necessary, a new Mission Statement needs to be developed or the existing one revamped. To support any proposed changes in the Mission Statement, the present organizational structure and governance need to be examined with any necessary modifications defined. These changes may entail extensive revision of the Constitution. Any changes so identified need to be approved by the IOA EC and then by the IOA Full Member associations prior to implementation.

As the president stated, the members of this Task-force are aware of IOA's history, have had experience governing the organization both at Regional and International levels, are sensitive to the relationships with industry and professional kindred organizations, are concerned about its future endeavours and have the desire, talent, time and interpersonal skills necessary to make meaningful contributions to this initiative.

The Task Force members are Ms Di Bracken - IPP IOA, Chair person of the Task Force, Canada, Mrs. Brenda Flanagan - Past President IOA, UK, Prof. Gerhard Englert - Past President IOA and founding member of IOA, Germany, Mr. Ken Aukett - Past President IOA , President UOAA, USA and Mr. John O'Neill - Past Treasurer of IOA, New Zealand.

Further information about the work of the Task-force will be in the next edition of IOA TODAY.

SOUTH AMERICAN REGION – ALADOTeresa Antequera, President

We members of ALADO are working hard preparing for the celebration of World Ostomy Day.In next June we are presenting the first Course on ET training for nurses in Cordoba, Argentina. In September ASOSDELPA (Paraguay) we will have a Course on Coloproctology. In July, in Ecuador, a Course on coloproctology is taking place and Mariela Acero de Romero, Vice President of ALADO will go to participate in the course.

COLOMBIA MARCH 2009

The Colombian Ostomy Association has initiated contacts with the Foundation ALCOLON and has received the support and linking this to the World Day of Ostomates; like linking of Nursing Students at the Universidad Javeriana. It is also in the process of accessing an area of the Health Secretariat of Bogotá, to work in an outreach program of the Association in various hospitals in the capital.

A.C.D.O. continues to develop the education, recreation and workshops scheduled for the year 2009

“ AOA Website Opened “

A young Philippino, one of the four Coordination Committee members of AOA and designated Asian Representative for 20/40 Focus Group, Ronaldo S. Lora, an ostomate confined to a wheelchair, has successfully built and opened AOA’s first website recently. Please make access to: http://www.ostomyasian.org

I never say it is full of charms and curiosity but I am sure it will be a symbol of a good start of jobs by the newly elected AOA/CC members. I hope it will be further developed and function as a useful tool of communication among AOA member associations, Asian ostomates, medical professionals, industries and ostomy advocates.”

Arne Holte, PresidentExiting times in Europe

It is really exiting times in Europe. No, I am not thinking only of the financial crises. It has as a matter of fact reached my home country, Norway, too, but it seems that we are managing better than most countries due to a lot of oil in the seas in the west and the north. I am really sorry for those of you that have ended up in real trouble losing jobs – and for some also homes. Hopefully the situation will back on track again in a year or two.

To some other excitement in Europe. At the end of February the EOA CC and also appointed persons met in Frankfurt to discuss the future of EOA – and also IOA. Three other persons with great organizational skills were also invited to the meeting. Those were Gerhard Englert from Deutsche ILCO, Marie Steen from ILCO Sweden and Henning Granslev from COPA, Denmark.

One very important reason for the meeting was to discuss the work done by a task force appointed by the IOA EC. Changing the fees and voting structure, giving

other regions than EOA an extra vote, and reducing the possibility of using proxy votes was part of the work from the task force. The meeting in Frankfurt reached unanimous statement that no action that would reduce the number of votes from EOA compared to the rest of the ostomy world would be accepted.

The meeting also discussed a better way of organizing IOA, and during the coming autumn all EOA associations will be invited to give their point of view concerning the proposed change. As the next world meeting, where changes in the constitution can be done, will be held in Bangkok late next year, all EOA associations will be invited to an EOA meeting to discuss the changes well in advance of the world meeting.

You may be wondering what changes the meeting proposed. Sorry, but I have to let you wait some time before revealing it. I can anyway promise you exiting changes to the benefit of ostomates, not only in Europe, but all over the world.

On the 3. of October this year we shall all celebrate World Ostomy Day (WOD). I hope all EOA associations will join in this great opportunity to let our voice be heard. Please let me know your plans – and take a look at www.ostomyinternat ional .org to get ideas for arrangements for WOD. You will also get info on Hollister Photo contest (“shoot” an ostomate doing something (!) – could be dancing, mountain climbing, helping an old lady across the street, doing the dishes – or whatever. Maybe you will try to win the Cololast Merit Award. Read the conditions on our HP and get going!

I know that in my country the nationwide organization has got a reasonable amount of money to have a great gathering, while the 22 local chapters have their own arrangements promoting ostomy.

As spring is spreading to rapidly in northern direction these days, and summer will come in some weeks also here in south Norway, I wish you all a great summer hoping to see some of you later this year.

Arne Holte

NORTH & CENTRAL AMERICA and CARIBBEAN OSTOMY REGION – NCACOADoug Graham, President

It’s great to be communicating with you again and to hopefully provide you with encouraging information. We have accomplished several initiatives in this first quarter of this year to improve our communications and increase the number of member countries to our regional. You may be aware from our last report that we held a Regional Meeting / Conference in Colima, Mexico on February4, 5 and 6. Di Bracken represented the International Ostomy Association (IOA) and we had

delegates and representatives from; Asociacion De Ostomizados De Colima, I.A.P. (AOC), Asociacion de Ostomizados de Puerto Rico (AOPR), United Ostomy Association of America (UOAA), the United Ostomy Association of Canada (UOAA). Also in attendance were Friends of Ostomates Worldwide Canada (FOW-Canada) and Friends of Ostomates Worldwide Canada USA (FOW-USA). All the participants were helpful and patient as several scheduled events of our educational day changed. This was necessary to accommodate the State Governor and several others official’s schedule. Our educational day was on the Mexican Independence Day holiday and the Colima State Governor with all of his many duties of the day managed to be with us for a full hour and bring us his best wishes.

I will take this opportunity to thank a few others that gave that extra bit of help that is so appreciated. Di Bracken completed many tasks such as taking the minutes, gathering reports and even picking up empty cups. I pressed Martha Vélez de Nieves into service as our official interpreter and she happily accepted that role and did an excellent job of it. My wife Astrid continuously working behind the scenes and reminding me of the things I had to do. Finally and to me most importantly were the efforts of Ofelia Delegado Puente and Jorge Vargas Morales and their extended family for making us all welcomed and assisting us in so many ways. If you would like to read more on the meeting/conference in Colima, Mexico it is available on this website. We have continued to contact Ostomates and medical professionals in countries in Central America and the Caribbean Island Nations. The progress is slow but eventually I believe that there will be positive results.

A new phrase, Seize the opportunity, is a phrase that will be repeated and pondered by many members of the Affiliated Support Groups (ASG) of The United Ostomy Association of America. When you read Ken’s message you will likely agree that we have indeed seized the opportunity to live and enjoy our lives.

The changes to the UOAA Constitution that were highlighted in the last extracts were passed and effective January 1, 2010, the terms of the President, President-Elect and Vice President have been reduced from 3 years to 2 years, and, in addition, the Vice President now has the right to serve for two successive 2 year terms. Traditionally WOD is held on the 1st Saturday of October, but in 2009, since this date conflicts with the widely observed Jewish Holidays of Shmini Atzeret and Simchas Torah, UOAA’s MBoD approved moving the official WOD’09 observance in the United States to Saturday, October 17th. Seize the opportunity to reach out and inform others of the Ostomy experience.

UOAA Conference August 5 – 8, 2009The biennial conference will take place in New Orleans and from what I have read the,” Good Times Will Roll”, The conference venue is the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel on Canal Street right off the famous French Quarter in Historic downtown New Orleans. SOUTH PACIFIC REGION – SPOAPeter McQueen, President

On the 11th September 2009 the 2nd regional meeting of SPOA held outside an IOA meeting will be held in Canberra, Australia’s capita be l city. As part of the annual meeting of ACSA there will a regional meeting of SPOA where delegates from New Zealand and Australia have been invited to attend, no doubt the membership status of Australia will be high on the agenda.

The annual conference of the Federation of New Zealand Ostomy Societies will take place in Hamilton from the 7th till the 9th of August 2009.

Preparations for World Ostomy Day are well underway in both Australia and New Zealand with many local Associations (Chapters) incorporating innovative ideas to celebrate the event. The theme for WOD2009 is “Reaching Out”. Reaching Out signifies the role that Ostomates and their Associations play in the rehabilitation of new and long term Ostomates alike and by educating general community in their needs and aspirations.

We are fortunate as Ostomates in Australia and New Zealand there are well established health systems that provide appliances to those in need at no cost and continued health care support available. Ostomates in many other countries are not as fortunate having to deal with life with a stoma with little or no support or appliances. In an effort assist those in our region Australia and New Zealand are continuing to supply appliances to Indonesia, The Philippines’ Tonga and Fiji and seeking to establish contacts in other areas to help those in need.

We in the south Pacific are about to enter winter and after enjoying a warm summer it will bring some relief to many. The devastating bushfires in Victoria demonstrate how fragile life is it certainly put things into perspective. We wish our fellow Ostomates in the northern hemisphere an enjoyable spring and summer

Peter McQueen

FutureI plan to meet with members of our Executive Council when I attend the UOAA Conference in New Orleans. We will review our plans to contact Ostomates or medical practitioners in Central America and the Caribbean Island Nations. I request that if you are in this Region you contact me at [email protected] to let me know the status of Ostomates in your country. With a little effort we can unite our Region and help one another. ConclusionThanks to the leaders in our Region that have invested their time and skills to maintain and develop their Association. Without their commitment it would be difficult if not impossible to meet our mandate of helping Ostomates and people with related surgeries to reach a good standard of life. Also, a special thanks to Friends of Ostomates Worldwide Canada (FOW-Canada) and Friends of Ostomates Worldwide USA (FOW-USA) for the shipment of surplus Ostomy supplies they have sent to countries in our Region.
