DESCRIPTION
I/O Merino was created 2005 when brothers, David and Peter Michell (5th Generation Australian, Michell Wool family members), had an exciting new vision for the world of baselayer apparel. Aligning their extensive background and knowledge of merino wool and the greater wool industry with their passion for the great outdoors, to develop a concept for apparel that was both functional and high performing, yet versatile and comfortable. Building on their successful foundation base of merino active wear, the 2013/14 collection highlights the next era of I/O Merino apparel. Encompassing comfort, functionality, and of course, the high quality of Australian Merino.

IO Merino Wool can soak up a lot of moisture withoutfeeling wet. This makes wool a hygroscopic insulator. The crimp in the wool fiber forces eachstrand to butt against each other, as opposed to liningup side by side or laying down flat together. This keepsthe tiny air pockets intact, acting as little insulators.

The natural elasticity of the IO MerinoWool fiber means they stretch with thewearer, but then return to their naturalshape so there is less chance of garments sagging or losing their shape.

IO Merino wool works naturally with your body’s heating and cooling system. It regulates your temperature by absorbing and releasing moisture. When conditions are cold and the dry, merino woolabsorbs moisture and triggers a process whereby thefabric generates heat (called “heat of sorption”).

Wool is comfortable to wear in both warm and coolclimates. This is because wool is an absorbentfiber. When the air is cool and damp, wool absorbsmoisture and keeps a layer of dry insulating airnext to the skin. When it is warm, that sameabsorbtion capacity takes up perspiration andkeeps insulating dry air next to the skin, making thebody's natural cooling system work better.

Merino wool has a permanent natural resistance to microbialgrowth and odour retention, and can be in use for several dayswithout smelling. The reason is a combination of merinowool’s excellent moisture absorption, and the fibres’ unevenand negatively-charged surfaces. Odour-causing bacteria prefer the exposed, flat and positively-charged surfaces of synthetic fibre.

The inner core of wool fibers can absorb 35% of its own weight in moisture. Not until wool is saturated with 60% of its own weight will it feel wet to the touch. Because of this, even wool is moderately damp, the insulating air pockets are still intact. Furthermore, the wicking properties of wool fibers drawmoisture away from the skin helping to keep the body warm.

In extreme exertion, you need a garment that 'breathes',which means it must be able to absorb perspiration andrelease it into the air. No fabric does that quite like IO MerinoWool. The hydrophilic core of the Merino Wool fiber has anamazing capacity to absorb liquid - up to 35% of its ownweight - so it's better than synthetics at removing sweatfrom the skin, moving it away, and releasing it as vapor.

You are safer in IO Merino because it is flame retardant, doesn't melt and stick to the skin, and even self-extinguisheswhen the source of flame is removed. So when you arescreaming down the mountain at the speed of light, you’llfeel safer in IO Merino.

Merino wool resists dirt, retains its appearance, and stays cleaner longer. Its ability to absorb moisture prevents a build-up of static electric-ity and therefore wool does not attract lint and dust from the air.Furthermore the crimp in the wool fibre and the scales on the outside ofthe fibre assist in keeping dirt from penetrating the surface. The samequalities also make it easier to clean.

In a warm environment, your IO Merino garment will regulate your temperature through “cooling by evaporation”. This is the same principle our body uses: itproduces sweat to cool us down. In this manner wool regulates your body temperature, and helps you to keep asteady and comfortable temperature in all kinds of weather.

IO Merino wool is so comfortable to wear because its elasticitymeans garments fit so well and yield to body movement it absorbs moisture, allows your body to breathe, yet never feels damp andclammy. No other fabric serves so well under such a variety of conditions, nor combines so many natural properties.

Merino wool, one of the oldest textile fibres known, has survived the test of time because of its unique natural properties. The basic characteristics wool possessed in theStone Age era, for instance, are still the fundamental qualitiesthat make wool unique in this 20th century. Today there aremany other textile fibres, but as yet science has not been ableto produce another fibre containing all the natural propertiesof wool. Wool remains unique; a masterpiece of design.

Using wool products supports local farmers throughout the world, especially those letting their sheep graze on pesticide free pastures.Wool is a sustainable resource. Most Australian Merino wool is produced organically or with low use of harmful chemicals. The processing of wool requires very little environmental impact compared to other natural fibers or man-made fibers.

Since the diameter of the merino fibre is only a fragment of that ofordinary wool fibres, merino wool feels much lighter and softeragainst your skin. In addition to being comfortable, merino is a protective fibre. Because of their keratin content, the fibres arehighly flame-retardant, and will not melt like synthetic materials.Merino wool also provides strong protection against the sun, andit is an environmentally friendly and renewable material.

Your comfort is our main priority. IO Merino wool fabrics have low thermal conductivity and, therefore, feel warm to the touch in coldweather and cool in warm weather. It remains comfortable in hothumid conditions, where a man-made product can feel clammy. This isbecause wool has the ability to absorb moisture vapour without feelingwet and to release it as conditions change.

Merino’s wool can be bent 20,000 times before breaking.By comparison, a cotton fibre will break after 3,000 timesand silk after just 2,000. This means Merino garments notonly last longer, but also retain their appearance for alonger period.

While the core of the Merino fibre is capable of absorbing up to a third of its dry weight in moisture, the surface or Merino fibers has a waxy coating that repels liquids. This surface layer is not easily removed by washing or processing. Water droplets on the surface of Merino willbead and roll off instead of being absorbed into the fabric.
