October 2018 Dear Parents and Carers,  Welcome to my first newsletter of this school year. It’s hard to believe it’s already half term and therefore a sixth of the way through the school year! It’s been a lovely start to the year, with our new Year 6 children proving themselves to be great role models for the rest of the school. It has also been wonderful to see our new children in Reception and Nursery settling into school so well and enjoying their learning every day.

We have a vacancy for a parent governor on our governing body and will be holding elections after half term. Being a governor is an important role and as parent governor one has the opportunity to make a difference, not only for your children, but for children in years to come. There is more information and a nomination form at the end of this newsletter and on the letters page of our website. The deadline for nominations is 5th November.

The children have been working hard on this year’s whole school Time Travellers Challenge, ”How can we share a historic moment in time?” We are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible during our celebration week, which commences on Monday 26th November.

You might have noticed that the yellow zig zags have been repainted outside the main school gate, which along with our cones and parking notices give a very clear message about safe parking at the beginning and end of the school day. Thank you to all of you who have adapted their morning routine to make a safer start to our children’s day.

To the left of this page are some important dates, including next Monday’s INSET day. I can also confirm the last two INSET days this year are 3rd June (first day after May half term holiday) and 23rd July (last day of term).

School Council You may have heard from         your child that we have         been voting for School       Council. Two representatives     from each class have been         voted by their peers to         represent their class. We       have had our first meeting         where the children are       extremely keen to make the         school even better. The       children want to raise       money for new equipment in the playground and organise playground buddies to                       help. They will also be involved in a recycling project.Their first task was lead the                             collection for the Harvest food bank and they have done a fantastic job! Food has                             been collected for the Trussell Trust for families in crisis. We look forward to sharing                             more news from the school council. Miss Gallagher, Deputy Head of School  Parent reps A sincere thanks to those of you who have already pledged to be a Class Rep this year. Class Reps are a really important and effective way to communicate between each class group of parents and the class teacher and school. The class rep system gives parents a chance to have your say and ask questions (including working parents who may not have the chance to come in to school very often), support your classes through teacher liaison and help with occasional fundraising for the class so they can access fantastic learning opportunities. Using this system also enables our teachers to listen to the views and questions of the whole class, making it much easier to answer questions and queries and take on board suggestions. So far, we have the following reps confirmed and some vacancies which we would love to fill as soon as we can. Please let your child’s class teacher know (email address below) if you would be able to help where there is a vacancy, or if you would like more information

Save the date - 30th November 3.30-5.15pm Christmas Fair!

Please come to our planning meeting!

Parents who would like to help plan the fair are very welcome to come to the first planning meeting on Thursday 1st November at 2.15 in the Studio Hall. The fair raises a lot of money for our children, and recently has helped with resourcing the library, theatre groups and playground equipment. The fair cannot happen without volunteers, even if you cannot make planning meetings please do consider helping on the day- no experience necessary, and it’s always good fun!! Finally, as always, donations of RAFFLE PRIZES are very much needed. The raffle is one of our biggest fundraisers so please drop any donations to the office.    Year 2 messages: On the 12th November, Year 2 will be having a very special visit from the local historian, Steve Hunnisett. He will be coming into school to teach the year 2 children about how WW2 impacted our local area and school.. To make this day even better, the year 2 children from Invicta Deptford will be joining us so that the children will be able to meet their friends in the other Cutty Sark and Deman classes. On this occasion, to celebrate what the children have learnt this term, they are welcome to dress up as evacuees, wardens or soldiers (no guns please).   - During the second Autumn half term, the children in year 2 will be learning about Christianity and will be visiting St George's Church for a Christmas journey. Deman class will be attending their Christmas journey on the 3rd December and Cutty Sark Class will be attending theirs on the 4th December. These experiences wouldn't happen without the help of parents. If you wish to attend the Christmas journey with your child's class, please contact Miss Perez, Miss Rutt or Miss Deighton.   - On the 10th December, Miss Deighton, Miss Perez and Miss Rutt will be hosting KS1 SATS meetings for parents. This will be in Cutty Sark classroom at 3:45 and again at 5:00.   - Also in November, the children will be visiting the Imperial War Museum to extend

One of the best ways of doing this is to walk, scoot or cycle to and from school, not only is it healthier but by making less car journeys we reduce the pollution in the surrounding areas. Royal Greenwich Borough have produced a map of the area surrounding the school that includes a suggested walking boundary. The idea being if you live within this boundary
