The Life Science Sector in the Highlands and Islands

• Sector Strengths. Inverness is already a significant life science centre and Inverness Campus will further build on this activity. Its particular local strengths are in digital health and diabetes. • Digital Health. Healthcare professionals in the Highlands and Islands have been involved in digital health for many years – it has been the best route for the provision of healthcare in a distributed healthcare model. This has forged unusually strong links between primary; secondary and social care provision. • Diabetes. There are live opportunities for investors to work with the UHI Department of Diabetes and Cardiovascular science. The Department has been developed in response to the position of Johnson & Johnson’s LifeScan Scotland as a leading diabetes company with significant diabetes research and development as well as manufacturing capability • Other areas. In addition, the partners in Inverness Campus are involved in research and operational areas including rural health, animal health, cardiovascular health, lipidomics and zoonosis.

• Track Record. Inverness Campus offers the opportunity to support the next phase of growth for the Inverness Life Science community. The community already boasts the activity of the adjacent Raigmore Hospital; University of the Highlands and Islands; the University of Stirling; the University of Aberdeen; the Centre for Health Science; Digital Design Studio (Glasgow School of Art); and numerous companies including LifeScan Scotland, the most significant medical devices employer in Scotland and a world centre in diabetes research.

• Sector Critical Mass. The Life Science community is also a base for companies supporting Life Science in the Highlands and Islands – a supply chain of activity from R&D through to commercialisation. Support activities in the area include trials design, trials management, statistical modelling, informatics, diagnostics, analysis and clinician training.

The Inverness Campus Opportunity

• Knowledge, research and insight. Inverness Campus represents a tremendous opportunity for companies to collaborate with clinicians and university research and to establish a presence in a high quality business environment. The presence of Universities, Colleges, the NHS, medical teaching bodies, clinical trials, regulatory, informatics and statistical support organisations in the local community offers opportunities as an ideal base for a wide range of Life Science activity from research trials through to manufacturing.

• Collaboration. The strength of the opportunity lies in the collaborative links that are already in place between the NHS, a number of Universities, other organisations and the commercial sector. At the centre of this activity is the Centre for Health Science (adjacent to the Campus) which has helped drive collaborative projects – and works on business opportunities / projects on behalf of co-located organisations.

This level of collaboration is perhaps unusual but is evidenced by the combined presence of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), and the Universities of Stirling, Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow, Glasgow School of Art and the new Scotland’s Rural College in a single location. Inverness is a relatively new centre for such research and as a result there is an energy, enthusiasm and opportunity to influence and catch a research community on the rise.

• Skills. The workforce in the Highlands can demonstrate greater skill levels and staff working in higher level occupations than the national average and yet salaries are highly competitive when compared to the average for Scotland. In addition, educational attainment from schools in the Highlands is better than for Scotland as a whole.

• People and population. Inverness has one of the greatest concentrations of people working in commercial medical activities of any UK Local Authority. Inverness has access to a working age population of almost 100,000 within a 45 minute drive. The area is also fast growing – for instance the Highland Local Authority area population is growing almost twice as fast as Scotland as a whole.

• Career development. The critical mass of Life Science activity from discovery to healthcare provides a range of career opportunities in a fantastic living environment. There is the opportunity to collaborate on skills development with universities, colleges and other employers. All of this can be crucial in attracting staff with critical skills.

• One hour from major UK cities. Inverness is at the centre of the Highlands and Islands economy and has good rail and road links throughout Scotland. Inverness Airport provides links to major UK centres as well as Amsterdam with the associated onward international connections. The result is that Inverness is little more than an hour from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Belfast and other UK centres. A huge range of international destinations are available through the Schiphol connection.
