Invercargill Dog Rehoming & Euthanasia Survey As a result of the public response to the captive bolt video released in 2017 an independent Community Advisory Panel of six people was established by the Invercargill City Council to consider the most suitable methods for rehoming and euthanising dogs in the Invercargill City Council area. is survey is designed to gain feedback from the public on their preferences on both of these issues. Your feedback will be reviewed by the Community Advisory Panel to help the members form their recommendation to the Council about what methods should be used in future for rehoming and euthanasing dogs. (e.g registered breeder, participated in training clubs, visited the dog park etc) 7 Rehoming Under the Dog Control Act, Council must hold any found or seized dog for a minimum of seven days to allow the dog’s owner to come forward. After seven days, the dog becomes the property of the Council. e Invercargill City Council, the Animal Services Team, and the Animal Care Facility have always endeavoured to rehome any unclaimed dogs suitable for rehoming. Until September 2017, this was undertaken through a number of methods and various other agencies throughout Southland. With the suspension of the use of captive bolt, Council entered into an agreement with Southland SPCA, where all dogs left unclaimed at the Animal Care Facility were assessed and re- homed or euthanised by the SPCA. However, this agreement is short-term to allow for the Community Advisory Panel to make a recommendation, and is unlikely to be able to be continued long-term.
