Introduction and Biographical Notes on Clyde Wann

The Clyde Wann collection of records were brought into the Yukon Archives by Mr. RonHolway at two different times: November of 1982 and February of 1983. The records were recoveredfrom an out-of –doors storage shed, and consequently many of the items in the collection have sufferedthe effects of weather and dirt. Basic conservation consisting of cleaning and spraying has been appliedto the records, which are now organized, described and available for viewing.

Clyde G. Wann was born in 1900 in the United States, and he died on December 3, 1967 of aheart attack at his home at McCrae, Whitehorse, Y.T.

When Clyde was 17 he boarded a steamer in Seattle for Ketchikan, Alaska and he worked in amine operating on Prince of Wales Island. He moved to Cordova where he spent some time as alongshoreman, and then went to Kennicott, working in the copper mines there. Nome was his nextdestination; here he worked on a dredge and later spent some time prospecting in the foothills nearMount McKinley.

Wann met an ex-Klondiker, James Finnegan in Fairbanks. Both men felt that there was a futurefor aviation in the north, and Finnegan proposed that they go to Mayo in order to prospect and get somemoney together. The men arrived in Mayo in late 1924 and went to work for the Treadwell YukonMining Company. By 1926, they had decided to start a commercial airline in the Yukon: the YukonAirways and Exploration Co., Ltd. Finnegan was President, Wann was Vice-President, and AndrewCruikshank was General Manager. The Company inaugurated the first commercial air service in Yukonin 1927, flying a Ryan Brougham on wheels. The Company later added a J5 powered Eaglerock, aRyan B5 Seaplane and eventually built the fleet up to include nine aircraft. The ups and downs ofWann’s aviation career can be read about in the article written by Jeanne Harbottle entitled: “ClydeWann, Father of Yukon Aviation” in Alaska Journal, Autumn, 1973.

In 1954, Yukon Airways and Exploration Co. Ltd., sold out to Pacific Western Airlines whowere looking to establish a base in the north. The Yukon Airways Company continued to use someaircraft for mining and prospecting ventures, and Clyde spent a part of every summer prospecting in theMayo-Keno Hill district.

After the Alaska Highway was completed, Clyde Wann built and operated lodges along thehighway. He also repossessed a large garage for a Chrysler Franchise, and continued with thesebusinesses through the 1950’s and 1960’s until his death in December of 1967. The businesses, forlegal and corporate purposes, were referred to under the umbrella name of Clyde Wann Motors Ltd.

The records in this collection reflect primarily Clyde and Helen Wann’s post ‘Yukon Airways’days, in particular their experiences with operating the Morley River Lodge at Mile 777.7 and the SwiftRiver Lodge at Mile 733.

The other lodges Clyde Wann operated, and some of their records are represented in thiscollection, were: Beaver Creek Lodge at Mile 1202 and Destruction Bay Lodge at Mile 1803.

Aspects of running the lodges, such as: acquiring and maintaining personnel, ordering suppliesand financial details are represented in the collection. Also present in the collection are papersconcerned with Clyde’s personal mining interests and income tax; Clyde’s Chrysler dealership; variouslegal documents; photographs; and maps and plans.

1E. PERSONAL PAPERS

Because of the nature of Clyde Wann Motors Ltd. (being primarily Highway Lodges), and ClydeWann’s own very active involvement in the businesses, there is a certain inevitable blending of hispersonal and business papers as evidenced in the previous four sections of this collection.

However, those papers of an obvious personal nature and those papers which are quite distinct from thebusiness: Clyde Wann Motors Ltd., have been described separately in this section. The personal papersconsist primarily of personal correspondence, and papers related to Clyde Wann’s involvement withvarious mining companies, properties etc.
