healthy climate, all the
LEGENDS and glories of
history enveloping in the
mists of time, the glorious
ruins of the

TEMPLE OF APOLLO, the prominent TEMPLE OF APHAIA, its churches and monasteries, the small Mistras of PALIAHORA, its golden beaches and cool bays, the neoclassical mansions and traditional houses.
From ancient times, Aegina has been the ideal place for relaxation and spiritual uplifting, a place of artistic INSPIRATION and CONCENTRATION, asceticism and entertainment.
Their assumptions were reinforced by ANCIENT INSCRIPTIONS that were found in different locations in the area or in many ancient architectural parts.
The capital city must have been transferred to PALIAHORA around 9th or 10th century, when the inhabitants were forced to leave the castline that was revaged by PIRATES and seek refuge in the island.

close to the harbour, on the left
of the disembarkation area and
reflects the age-long history of
the acropolis of ancient Aegina.
VENETIAN sailors named the
hill “Kolona” after the columns of
the ancient temple of Apollo that
served as a SIGN OF
ORIENTATION
ADOLF FURTWANGLER and LOLLING began
archeological excavations in the
19th century.
Also, between 1921 and
1954 G. Welter began
the first systematic
excavation in the
prehistoric town and

On a hill forming a natural fort with an altitude of 355 metres, opposite the monastery of Agios Nektarios lies PALIAHORA,the island’s renowned medieval town and acropolis. Christos Capralos is one of the most famous greek c o n t e m p o r a r y sculpturers, was born in Panaitolio in November 1909 and died in 1993 He studied painting at the School of Fine Arts in Athens and sculpture in the Academies Grande Chaumieres and Colarossi in Paris.
In 1962 Christos Capralos represented Greece at the Venice Biennale, where he exhibited wrought lead and copper works, which he had created with the ancient technique of cast wax.

The holy TEMPLE OF TAXIARHES is located in
the area called Sfyrihtres, on
the northen shoulder of
OROS. It was built on the
northwest corner of a
hypostyle hall of the
Hellenistic period (which was
originally believed to be the
temple of Aphaia)

is likely that the Taxiarhes
temple, dated according
to professor N.
Moutsopoulos to the
14th century,used to be
the catholicon of the
monastery of AGIOS NIKOLAOS,the ruins
of which still surround
